A deep understanding of the Milky Way galaxy, its formation and evolution requires observations of huge numbers of stars. Stellar photometry, therefore, provides an economical method to obtain intrinsic stellar parameters. With the addition of distance information - deriving reliable ages from photometry is a possibility. We have developed a Bayesian method that generates 2D probability maps of a star's age and metallicity from photometry and parallax using isochrones. Our synthetic tests show that including a near-UV passband enables us to break the degeneracy between a star's age and metallicity for certain evolutionary stages. It is possible to find well-constrained ages and metallicities for turn-off and sub-giant stars with colours including a U band and a parallax with uncertainty less than ~20%. Metallicities alone are possible for the main sequence and giant branch. We find good agreement with the literature when we apply our method to the Gaia benchmark stars, particularly for turn-off and young stars. Further tests on the old open cluster NGC 188, however, reveal significant limitations in the stellar isochrones. The ages derived for the cluster stars vary with evolutionary stage, such that turn-off ages disagree with those on the sub-giant branch, and metallicities vary significantly throughout. Furthermore, the parameters vary appreciably depending on which colour combinations are used in the derivation. We identify the causes of these mismatches and show that improvements are needed in the modelling of giant branch stars and in the creation and calibration of synthetic near-UV photometry. Our results warn against applying isochrone fitting indiscriminately. In particular, the uncertainty on the stellar models should be quantitatively taken into account. Further efforts to improve the models will result in significant advancements in our ability to study the Galaxy.
White dwarfs (WDs) offer unrealized potential in solving two problems in astrophysics: stellar age accuracy and precision. WD cooling ages can be inferred from surface temperatures and radii, which can be constrained with precision by high quality photometry and parallaxes. Accurate and precise Gaia parallaxes along with photometric surveys provide information to derive cooling and total ages for vast numbers of WDs. Here we analyse 1372 WDs found in wide binaries with MS companions, and report on the cooling and total age precision attainable in these WD+MS systems. The total age of a WD can …
We present new luminosity-metallicity (LZ; MV-[Fe/H] and MG-[Fe/H]) relations and, for the first time, empirical, Gaia three-band (G,GBP,GRP) period-Wesenheit-metallicity (PWZ) relations of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) derived using a hierarchical Bayesian approach and new accurate parallaxes published for these variables in the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3). In a previous study we obtained Bayesian hierarchically-derived LZ relations from a sample of about four hundred Milky Way field RRLs with G-band light curves and trigonometric parallaxes published in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), using V me…
We investigate and parameterise high proper motion red stars in the Torino Observatory Parallax Program. Observations of 27 objects were made over the period 1994 - 2001 on the 1.05m Torino telescope. The trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions were determined using standard techniques. We determine parallaxes and proper motions, and by comparison to models we infer masses, ages, and {metallicities}. Of the 27 objects, 22 are within 25pc and 4 appear to be subdwarfs. There are published parallaxes for 18 objects, and all but 4 agree to within 2$σ$. The discrepancies are discussed.
We perform a search for wide binaries in the Kepler field with the prospect of providing new constraints for gyrochronology. First, we construct our base catalog by compiling astrometry for the stars observed by Kepler, and supplement it with parallaxes, radial velocities (RVs), and metallicities. We then mine our base catalog for wide binary candidates by matching the stars' proper motions, as well as parallaxes, RVs, and metallicities, if available. We mitigate the presence of chance alignments among our candidates by performing a comprehensive data-based contamination analysis in the proper…
We present fits to the broadband photometric spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 158 eclipsing binaries (EBs) in the Tycho-2 catalog. These EBs were selected because they have highly precise stellar radii, effective temperatures, and in many cases metallicities previously determined in the literature, and thus have bolometric luminosities that are typically good to $\lesssim$ 10%. In most cases the available broadband photometry spans a wavelength range 0.4-10 $μ$m, and in many cases spans 0.15-22 $μ$m. The resulting SED fits, which have only extinction as a free parameter, provide a virtu…
The recent Gaia Data Release 1 of stellar parallaxes provides ample opportunity to find metal-poor main-sequence stars with precise parallaxes. We select 21 such stars with parallax uncertainties better than $σ_π/π\leq0.10$ and accurate abundance determinations suitable for testing metal-poor stellar evolution models and determining the distance to Galactic globular clusters. A Monte Carlo analysis was used, taking into account uncertainties in the model construction parameters, to generate stellar models and isochrones to fit to the calibration stars. The isochrones which fit the calibration …
The most accurate ages for the oldest stars are those obtained for nearby halo subgiants, because they depend almost entirely on just the measured parallaxes and absolute oxygen abundances. In this study, we have used the Fine Guidance Sensors on the Hubble Space Telescope to determine trigonometric parallaxes, with precisions of 2.1% or better, for the Population II subgiants HD 84937, HD 132475, and HD 140283. High quality spectra have been used to derive their surface abundances of O, Fe, Mg, Si, and Ca, which are assumed to be 0.1-0.15 dex less than their initial abundances due to the effe…
We have entered an era of large spectroscopic surveys in which we can measure, through automated pipelines, the atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances for large numbers of stars. Calibrating these survey pipelines using a set of "benchmark stars" in order to evaluate the accuracy and precision of the provided parameters and abundances is of utmost importance. The recent proposed set of Gaia FGK benchmark stars of Heiter et al. (2015) has no recommended stars within the critical metallicity range of $-2.0 <$ [Fe/H] $< -1.0$ dex. In this paper, we aim to add candidate Gaia benchmark star…
We have detected the tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) in the solar neighborhood using near infrared photometry from the 2MASS and DIRBE catalogs, and revised Hipparcos parallaxes. We confirm that the revised Hipparcos parallaxes are superior to the original ones, and that this improvement is necessary to detect the TRGB. We find a tip absolute magnitude of M_K=-6.85+/-0.03, in agreement with that expected from previous tip measurements of the Large Magellanic Cloud, Small Magellanic Cloud, and Bulge. This represents the first geometric calibration of the TRGB and extends previous calibration…
Accurate determinations of stellar parameters and distances for large complete samples of stars are keys for conducting detailed studies of the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. Here we present stellar atmospheric parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$, luminosity classifications, and [Fe/H]) estimates for some 24 million stars determined from the stellar colors of SMSS DR2 and Gaia EDR3, based on training datasets with available spectroscopic measurements from previous high/medium/low-resolution spectroscopic surveys. The number of stars with photometric-metallicity estimates is 4-5 times larger than…
We present revised stellar properties for 172 K2 target stars that were identified as possible hosts of transiting planets during Campaigns 1-17. Using medium-resolution near-infrared spectra acquired with the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility/SpeX and Palomar/TripleSpec, we found that 86 of our targets were bona fide cool dwarfs, 74 were hotter dwarfs, and 12 were giants. Combining our spectroscopic metallicities with Gaia parallaxes and archival photometry, we derived photometric stellar parameters and compared them to our spectroscopic estimates. Although our spectroscopic and photometric ra…
In this work we present chemical abundances of heavy elements (Z$>$28) for a homogeneous sample of 1059 stars from HARPS planet search program. We also derive ages using parallaxes from Hipparcos and Gaia DR1 to compare the results. We study the [X/Fe] ratios for different populations and compare them with models of Galactic chemical evolution. We find that thick disk stars are chemically disjunt for Zn and Eu. Moreover, the high-alpha metal-rich population presents an interesting behaviour, with clear overabundances of Cu and Zn and lower abundances of Y and Ba with respect to thin disk stars…
Observations of 48 red-clump stars were obtained in the H band with the PIONIER instrument installed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Limb-darkened angular diameters were measured by fitting radial intensity profile I(r) to square visibility measurements. Half the angular diameters determined have formal errors better than 1.2%, while the overall accuracy is better than 2.7%. Average stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperatures, metallicities and surface gravities) were determined from new spectroscopic observations and literature data and combined with precise Gaia parall…
Previous studies of planet occurrence rates largely relied on photometric stellar characterizations. In this paper, we present planet occurrence rates for mid-type M dwarfs using spectroscopy, parallaxes, and photometry to determine stellar characteristics. Our spectroscopic observations have allowed us to constrain spectral type, temperatures, and in some cases metallicities for 337 out of 561 probable mid-type M dwarfs in the primary Kepler field. We use a random forest classifier to assign a spectral type to the remaining 224 stars. Combining our data with Gaia parallaxes, we compute precis…
Accurate stellar parameters of stars in open clusters can help constrain models of stellar structure and evolution. Here we wish to determine the age and metallicity content of the open cluster NGC 2506. To this end we investigated three detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs; V2032, V4, and V5) for which we determined their masses and radii, as well as four red giant branch stars for which we determined their effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities. Three of the stars in the DEBs have masses close to the cluster turn-off mass, allowing for extremely precise age determination. …
The planet-metallicity correlation serves as a potential link between exoplanet systems as we observe them today and the effects of bulk composition on the planet formation process. Many observers have noted a tendency for Jovian planets to form around stars with higher metallicities; however, there is no consensus on a trend for smaller planets. Here, we investigate the planet-metallicity correlation for rocky planets in single and multi-planet systems around Kepler M-dwarf and late K-dwarf stars. Due to molecular blanketing and the dim nature of these low mass stars, it is difficult to make …
Discovery of a pair of very metal-poor stars enriched in neutron-capture elements: The proto-disk r-II star BPS CS 29529-0089 and the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus r-I star TYC 9219-2422-1
We investigate departures from LTE in the line formation of Fe for a number of well-studied late-type stars in different evolutionary stages. A new model of Fe atom was constructed from the most up-to-date theoretical and experimental atomic data available so far. Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation calculations for Fe were performed using 1D hydrostatic MARCS and MAFAGS-OS model atmospheres, as well as the spatial and temporal average stratifications from full 3D hydrodynamical simulations of stellar convection computed using the Stagger code. It is shown that the Fe I/F…
We present a new method to obtain stellar properties for stars exhibiting solar-like oscillations in an easy, fast, and transparent way. The method, called Asteroseismology Made Easy (AME), can determine stellar masses, mean-densities, radii, and surface gravities, as well as estimate ages. In this writing we present AME as a visual and powerful tool which could be useful; in particular in the light of the large number of exoplanets being found. AME consists of a set of figures from which the stellar parameters are deduced. These figures are made from a grid of stellar evolutionary models that…
Previous measurements of stellar properties for K2 stars in the Ecliptic Plane Input Catalog (EPIC; Huber et al. 2016) largely relied on photometry and proper motion measurements, with some added information from available spectra and parallaxes. Combining Gaia DR2 distances with spectroscopic measurements of effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) DR5, we computed updated stellar radii and masses for 26,838 K2 stars. For 195,250 targets without a LAMOST spectrum, we derived stellar parameters usin…
An accurate and precise Kepler Stellar Properties Catalog is essential for the interpretation of the Kepler exoplanet survey results. Previous Kepler Stellar Properties Catalogs have focused on reporting the best-available parameters for each star, but this has required combining data from a variety of heterogeneous sources. We present the Gaia-Kepler Stellar Properties Catalog, a set of stellar properties of 186,301 Kepler stars, homogeneously derived from isochrones and broadband photometry, Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes, and spectroscopic metallicities, where available. Our photometric eff…
We present the analysis of multiband time-series data for a sample of 24 Cepheids in the field of the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC1866. Very accurate BVI VLT photometry is combined with archival UBVI data, covering a large temporal window, to obtain precise mean magnitudes and periods with typical errors of 1-2% and of 1 ppm, respectively. These results represent the first accurate and homogeneous dataset for a substantial sample of Cepheid variables belonging to a cluster and hence sharing common distance, age and original chemical composition. Comparisons of the resulting multiband Per…
Canonical grids of stellar evolutionary sequences have been computed for the helium mass-fraction abundances $Y = 0.25$, $0.29$, and $0.33$, and for iron abundances that vary from $-2.4$ to $+0.4$ (in 0.2 dex increments) when [$α$/Fe] $= +0.4$, or for the ranges $-2.0 \le$ [Fe/H] $\le +0.6$, $-1.8 \le$ [Fe/H] $\le +0.6$ when [$α$/Fe] $= 0.0$ and $-0.4$, respectively. The grids, which consist of tracks for masses from $0.12 {{\cal M}_\odot}$ to $1.1$-$1.5 {{\cal M}_\odot}$ (depending on the metallicity) are based on up-to-date physics, including the gravitational settling of helium (but not met…
Stellar metallicity strongly correlates with the presence of planets and their properties. To check for new correlations between stars and the existence of an orbiting planet, we determine precise stellar parameters for a sample of metal-poor solar-type stars. This sample was observed with the HARPS spectrograph and is part of a program to search for new extrasolar planets. The stellar parameters were determined using an LTE analysis based on equivalent widths (EW) of iron lines and by imposing excitation and ionization equilibrium. The ARES code was used to allow automatic and systematic deri…
HARPS spectra with signal-to-noise ratios S/N > 600 at 6000 A were analysed with MARCS model atmospheres to obtain 1D LTE abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Sr, and Y for 72 nearby solar-type stars with metallicities in the range -0.3 < [Fe/H] < +0.3 and ASTEC stellar models were used to determine stellar ages from effective temperatures, luminosities obtained via Gaia DR2 parallaxes, and heavy element abundances. The resulting age-metallicity distribution appears to consist of two distinct populations: a sequence of old stars with a steep rise of [Fe/H] to about +0.3 dex …
[ABRIDGED] The purpose of this work is to evaluate how several elements produced by different nucleosynthesis processes behave with stellar age and provide empirical relations to derive stellar ages from chemical abundances. We derive different sets of ages using Gaia parallaxes for a sample of more than 1000 FGK dwarf stars for which he have spectra from the HARPS-GTO program. We analyze the temporal evolution of different abundance ratios to find the best chemical clocks. We find that [$α$/Fe] ratio (average of Mg, Si and Ti), [O/Fe] and [Zn/Fe] are good age proxies with a lower dispersion t…

Asteroseismology can provide joint constraints on masses and radii of individual stars. While this approach has been extensively tested for red giant branch (RGB) stars, it has been more difficult to test for helium core-burning red-clump (RC) giants because of the lack of fundamental calibrators. To provide independent mass estimates, we utilize a number of widely used horizontal-branch (HB) models in the literature, and derive photometric masses from a comparison with $griBVI_CJHK_s$ photometry. Our selected models disagree with each other on the predicted mass-luminosity-temperature relatio…
We present the first homogeneous catalog of $Kepler$, $K2$, and $TESS$ host stars and the corresponding catalog of exoplanet properties, which contain 7993 stars and 9324 planets, respectively. We used isochrone fitting and $Gaia$ DR3 photometry, parallaxes, and spectrophotometric metallicities to compute precise, homogeneous $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$, $\log g$, masses, radii, mean stellar densities, luminosities, ages, distances, and V-band extinctions for 3248, 565, and 4180 $Kepler$, $K2$, and $TESS$ stars, respectively. We compared our stellar properties to studies using fundamental and precise c…
