Following our tentative discovery of a faint shell around V1315 Aql reported in Sahman et al. (2015), we undertook deep Halpha imaging and intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of the shell. We find that the shell has its geometric centre located on V1315 Aql. The mass, spectral features and density of the shell are consistent with other nova shells, rather than planetary nebulae or supernova remnants. The radial velocity of the shell is consistent with the systemic velocity of V1315 Aql. We believe this evidence strongly suggests that the shell originates from an earlier nova event. This is the first nova shell discovered around a novalike, and supports the theory of nova-induced cycles in mass transfer rates (hibernation theory) first proposed by Shara et al. (1986).
An Empirical Correlation of $T_{\rm max}$ - $M_{\rm WD}$ of Dwarf Novae and The Average White Dwarf Mass in Cataclysmic Variables in the Galactic Bulge
We present an extensive Doppler tomography study of the eclipsing novalike EC21178--5417, which exhibits the classic accretion disc signature in the form of double-peak emission lines in its spectrum. Doppler tomograms confirm the presence of a strong, two-armed spiral pattern visible in the majority of the spectral lines studied. This makes EC21178--5417 one of the very few novalikes that show spiral structure in their discs. We also report night-to-night changes in the position and relative strength of the spiral arms, revealing fluctuations on the conditions in the accretion disc.
Superhumps are among the abundant variable phenomena observed in the light curves of cataclysmic variables (CVs). They come in two flavours as positive and negative superhumps, distinguished by periods slightly longer or shorter, respectively, than the orbital periods of these interacting binary systems. Positive superhumps are ubiquitous in superoutbursting short period dwarf novae of the SU~UMa type but are less common in longer period systems with accretion disks in a permanent bright state such as novalike variables and most old novae. Negative superhumps do not seem not to have a preferen…
It has been shown that the rate of angular momentum loss (AML) in cataclysmic variables (CVs) below the period gap is about 2.47 times that caused by gravitational radiation, suggesting extra AML mechanism besides gravitational radiation. Several potential mechanisms have been proposed but none of them has been verified. In this work we examine whether AML caused by friction between the expanding nova envelope and the donor star can account for the required AML rate. By adopting various expanding velocities of the envelope, we have calculated the evolution of CVs with typical initial parameter…
We obtained photometric observations of the nova-like cataclysmic variable RW Tri and gathered all available AAVSO and other data from the literature. We determined the system parameters and found their uncertainties using the code developed by us to model the light curves of binary systems. New time-resolved optical spectroscopic observations of RW Tri were also obtained to study the properties of emission features produced by the system. The usual interpretation of the single-peaked emission lines in nova-like systems is related to the bi-conical wind from the accretion disc's inner part. Ho…
Despite being bright ($V=12$) and nearby ($d=212$ pc) ASAS J071404+7004.3 has only recently been identified as a nova-like cataclysmic variable. We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy obtained at the Isaac Newton Telescope together with $\textit{Swift}$ X-ray and ultraviolet observations. We combined these with $\textit{TESS}$ photometry and find a period of 3.28h and a mass transfer rate of $4-9 \times 10^{-9} M_{sun}/yr$. Historical photometry shows at least one low state establishing the system as a VY Scl star. Our high-cadence spectroscopy also revealed rapidly changing winds emana…
Accreting white dwarfs (WDs) constitute a significant fraction of the hard X-ray sources detected by the INTEGRAL observatory. Most of them are magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) of the intermediate polar (IP) and polar types, but the contribution of the Nova-likes systems and the systems with optically thin boundary layers, Dwarf Novae (DNs) and Symbiotic Binaries (or Symbiotic Stars, SySs) in quiescence is also not negligible. Here we present a short review of the results obtained from the observations of cataclysmic variables and symbiotic binaries by INTEGRAL. The highlight results inclu…
The hydrogen-rich envelopes accreted by white dwarf stars from their red dwarf companions lead to thermonuclear runaways observed as classical nova eruptions peaking at up to 1 Million solar luminosities. Virtually all nova progenitors are novalike binaries exhibiting high rates of mass transfer to their white dwarfs before and after an eruption. It is a puzzle that binaries indistinguishable from novalikes, but with much lower mass transfer rates, and resulting dwarf nova outbursts, co-exist at the same orbital periods. Nova shells surrounding several dwarf novae demonstrate that at least som…
We present a joint spectral analysis of ROSAT PSPC, Swift XRT, and NuSTAR FPMA/B data of the nova-like (NL) cataclysmic variables (CVs), BZ Cam and V592 Cas in the 0.1-78.0 keV band. Plasma models of collisional equilibrium fail to model the 6.0-7.0 iron line complex and continuum with $χ^2_ν$ larger than 2.0. Our results show nonequilibrium ionization (NEI) conditions in the X-ray plasma with temperatures of 8.2-9.4 keV and 10.0-12.9 keV for BZ Cam and V592 Cas, respectively. The centroids of He-like and H-like iron ionization lines are not at their equilibrium values as expected from NEI con…
As part of the Transient UV Objects project, we have discovered a new outburst (at the beginning of October 2020) of the candidate cataclysmic variable (CV) ASASSN-18eh using the UV/Optical Telescope aboard the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. During the outburst its brightness increased by about 6 mag in UV compared to its brightness in the quiescent state. The properties of this outburst are consistent with it being a dwarf nova, strongly supporting the CV nature of ASASSN-18eh.
We explore the observational appearance of the merger of a low-mass star with a white dwarf (WD) binary companion. We are motivated by Schreiber et al. (2016), who found that multiple tensions between the observed properties of cataclysmic variables (CVs) and standard evolution models are resolved if a large fraction of CV binaries merge as a result of unstable mass transfer. Tidal disruption of the secondary forms a geometrically thick disk around the WD, which subsequently accretes at highly super-Eddington rates. Analytic estimates and numerical hydrodynamical simulations reveal that outflo…

IW And-type dwarf novae are recently recognized group of cataclysmic variables which are characterized by a sequence of brightening from a standstill-like phase with damping oscillations often followed by a deep dip. We found that the supposed classical nova BC Cas which erupted in 1929 experienced a state of an IW And-type dwarf nova in 2018, 89 yr after the eruption. This finding suggests that high mass-transfer rate following the nova eruption is associated with the IW And-type phenomenon. The mass of the white dwarf inferred from the decline rate of the nova is considerably higher than the…
We present the results of MeerKAT radio observations of eleven nearby novalike cataclysmic variables. We have detected radio emission from IM Eri, RW Sex, V3885 Sgr and V603 Aql. While RW Sex, V3885 Sgr and V603 Aql had been previously detected, this is the first reported radio detection of IM Eri. Our observations have doubled the sample of non-magnetic CVs with sensitive radio data. We observe that at our radio detection limits, a specific optical luminosity $\gtrsim 2.2\times 10^{18}$ erg/s/Hz (corresponding to $M_V \lesssim 6.0$) is required to produce a radio detection. We also observe th…
We present a study of the orbital light curves of the recurrent nova IM Normae since its 2002 outburst. The broad "eclipses" recur with a 2.46 hour period, which increases on a timescale of 1.28(16)x10^6 years. Under the assumption of conservative mass-transfer, this suggests a rate near 10^-7 M_sol/year, and this agrees with the estimated /accretion/ rate of the postnova, based on our estimate of luminosity. IM Nor appears to be a close match to the famous recurrent nova T Pyxidis. Both stars appear to have very high accretion rates, sufficient to drive the recurrent-nova events. Both have qu…
AIMS: A few well studied cataclysmic variables (CVs) have shown discrete characteristic frequencies of fast variability; the most prominent ones are around log(f/Hz) $\simeq$ -3. Because we still have only small number statistics, we obtained a new observation to test whether this is a general characteristic of CVs, especially if mass transfer occurs at a high rate typical for dwarf nova in outbursts, in the so called "high state". METHODS: We analyzed optical Kepler data of the quiescent nova and intermediate polar V4743 Sgr. This system hosts a white dwarf accreting through a disk in the hig…
We present a detailed study of the 2019 outburst of the cataclysmic variable V1047~Cen, which hosted a classical nova eruption in 2005. The peculiar outburst occurred 14 years after the classical nova event and lasted for more than 400 days, reaching an amplitude of around 6 magnitudes in the optical. Early spectral follow-up revealed what could be a dwarf nova (accretion disk instability) outburst. However, the outburst duration, high velocity ($>$2000\,km\,s$^{-1}$) features in the optical line profiles, luminous optical emission, and presence of prominent long-lasting radio emission togethe…
