We present transport measurements on a dipolar superfluid using a Bose-Einstein condensate of Dy-162 with strong magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. By moving an attractive laser beam through the condensate we observe an anisotropy in superfluid flow. This observation is compatible with an anisotropic critical velocity for the breakdown of dissipationless flow, which, in the spirit of the Landau criterion, can directly be connected to the anisotropy of the underlying dipolar excitation spectrum. In addition, the heating rate above this critical velocity reflects the same anisotropy. Our observations are in excellent agreement with simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and highlight the effect of dipolar interactions on macroscopic transport properties, rendering dissipation anisotropic.
Phase transitions share the universal feature of enhanced fluctuations near the transition point. Here we show that density fluctuations reveal how a Bose-Einstein condensate of dipolar atoms spontaneously breaks its translation symmetry and enters the supersolid state of matter -- a phase that combines superfluidity with crystalline order. We report on the first direct in situ measurement of density fluctuations across the superfluid-supersolid phase transition. This allows us to introduce a general and straightforward way to extract the static structure factor, estimate the spectrum of eleme…
We investigate the superfluidity and the coherence in dipolar binary Bose mixtures using the hydrodynamic approach. Useful analytical formulas for the excitations spectrum, the correlation function, the static structure factor, and the superfluid fraction are derived. We find that in the case of highly imbalanced mixture, the superfluidity can occur in the dilute component only at extremely low temperatures. The behavior of the first-order correlation function for both dipolar and nondipolar Bose mixtures is deeply analyzed. Then we face the two-dimensional case which encodes a non-trivial phy…
Quantum fluctuations can stabilize Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) against the mean-field collapse. Stabilization of the condensate has been observed in quantum degenerate Bose-Bose mixtures and dipolar BECs. The fine-tuning of the interatomic interactions can lead to the emergence of two new states of matter: liquid-like selfbound quantum droplets and supersolid crystals formed from these droplets. We review the properties of these exotic states of matter and summarize the experimental progress made using dipolar quantum gases and Bose-Bose mixtures. We conclude with an outline of important o…
A key manifestation of superfluidity in liquids and gases is a reduction of the moment of inertia under slow rotations. Non-classical rotational effects have been searched for a long time also for the elusive supersolid phase of matter, in which superfluidity coexists with a lattice structure. Here we show that the recently discovered supersolid phase in dipolar quantum gases features a reduced moment of inertia. We study a peculiar rotational oscillation mode in a harmonic potential, the scissors mode, already employed for superfluids. From the measured moment of inertia, we infer a superflui…
Experiments on dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates have recently reported the observation of supersolidity. Although quantized vortices constitute a key probe of superfluidity, their observability in dipolar supersolids is largely prevented by the strong density depletion caused by the formation of droplets. We present a novel approach to the nucleation of vortices and their observation, based on the quenching of the s-wave scattering length across the superfluid-supersolid transition. Starting from a slowly rotating, vortex-free, configuration in the superfluid phase, we predict vortex nucleati…
Crossed electric and magnetic fields influence dipolar neutral particles in the same way as the magnetic field influences charged particles. The effect of crossed fields is proportional to the dipole moment of the particle (inherent or induced). We show that this effect is quite spectacular in a multilayer system of polar molecules. In this system molecules may bind in chains. At low temperature the gas of chains becomes the superfluid one. The crossed fields then induce vortices in the superfluid gas of chains. The density of vortices is proportional to the number of particles in the chain. T…
Recent breakthrough experiments on dipolar condensates have reported the creation of supersolids, including two-dimensional arrays of quantum droplets. Droplet arrays are, however, not the only possible non-trivial density arrangement resulting from the interplay of mean-field instability and quantum stabilization. Several other possible density patterns may occur in trapped condensates at higher densities, including the so-called honeycomb supersolid, a phase that exists, as it is also the case of a triangular droplet supersolid, in the thermodynamic limit. We show that compared to droplet su…

We determine the quantum ground state of dipolar bosons in a quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice and interacting via $s$-wave scattering. The Hamiltonian is an extended Bose-Hubbard model which includes hopping terms due to the interactions. We identify the parameter regime for which the coefficients of the interaction-induced hopping terms become negative. For these parameters we numerically determine the phase diagram for a canonical ensemble and by means of density matrix renormalization group. We show that at sufficiently large values of the dipolar strength there is a quantum interferen…
We systematically investigate the properties of three-dimensional dipolar binary Bose mixture at low temperatures. A set of coupled self-consistent equations of motion are derived for the two condensates. In the homogeneous case, useful analytical formulas for the condensate depletion, the anomalous density, the ground-state energy, and the equation of state are obtained. The theory is extended to the inhomogeneous case and the importance of the inhomogeneity is highlighted. Our results open up a new avenue for studying dipolar mixture droplets. Impacts of the dipole-dipole interaction on the …
We study ultra-cold dipolar excitons confined in a 10$μ$m trap of a double GaAs quantum well. Based on the local density approximation, we unveil for the first time the equation of state of excitons at pure thermodynamic equilibrium. In this regime we show that, below a critical temperature of about $1$ Kelvin, a superfluid forms in the inner region of the trap at a local exciton density $n \sim 2-3 \, 10^{10} \text{cm}^{-2}$, encircled by a more dilute and normal component in the outer rim of the trap. Remarkably, this spatial arrangement correlates directly with the concentration of defects …
The long-range and anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction provides the so-called supersolid phases in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in an optical lattice. However, in a certain area of dipole interaction parameters, BECs can form into a droplet. In this paper, in order to qualitatively understand the droplet formations, we propose a toy model that allows us to estimate the size and shape of droplets in dipolar Bose-Hubbard system in the optical lattice. We compare results of the toy model with numerical solutions of the mean-field calculation.
The object of study of this thesis are dipolar systems in the quantum degenerate regime. In general, dealing with many-body systems and evaluating their properties requires to deal with the Schrödinger equation. In the present study we employ different Monte Carlo methods, that are stochastic techniques that allow to find numerical solutions to it.
We present results of computer simulations at low temperature of a two-dimensional system of dipolar bosons, with dipole moments aligned at an arbitrary angle with respect to the direction perpendicular to the plane. The phase diagram includes a homogeneous superfluid phase, as well as triangular and striped crystalline phases, as the particle density and the tilt angle are varied. In the striped solid, no phase coherence among stripes and consequently no ``supersolid" phase is found, in disagreement with recent theoretical predictions.
We study the dynamics of vortex dipoles in erbium ($^{168}$Er) and dysprosium ($^{164}$Dy) dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by applying an oscillating blue-detuned laser (Gaussian obstacle). For observing vortex dipoles, we solve a nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in quasi two-dimensions in real-time. We calculate the critical velocity for the nucleation of vortex dipoles in dipolar BECs with respect to dipolar interaction strengths. We also show the dynamics of the group of vortex dipoles and rarefaction pulses in dipolar BECs. In the dipolar BECs with Gaussian obstacle, we obs…
