This chapter reviews our current knowledge of metal-poor ultracool dwarfs with spectral types later than M7. The current census of M, L, and T subdwarfs is explored. The main colour trends of subdwarfs from the optical to the mid-infrared are described and their spectral features presented, which led to a preliminary and tentative spectral classification subject to important changes in the future when more of these metal-poor objects are discovered. Their multiplicity and the determination of their physical parameters (effective temperature, gravity, metallicity, and mass) are discussed. Finally, some suggestions and future guidelines are proposed to foster our knowledge on the oldest and coolest members of our Galaxy.
We have observed the eclipsing, post-common envelope white dwarf-brown dwarf binary, SDSS141126.20+200911.1, in the near-IR with the HAWK-I imager, and present here the first direct detection of the dark side of an irradiated brown dwarf in the $H$ band, and a tentative detection in the $K_s$ band. Our analysis of the lightcurves and indicates that the brown dwarf is likely to have an effective temperature of 1300 K, which is not consistent with the effective temperature of 800 K suggested by its mass and radius. Almost by definition brown dwarfs are objects with masses below the hydrogen burning limit, around $0.07\ M_\odot$. Below this mass, objects never reach a steady state where they can fuse hydrogen. Here we demonstrate, in contrast to this traditional view, that brown dwarfs with masses greater than the hydrogen burning limit may in principle exist in the universe. These objects, which we term "overmassive brown dwarfs" form a continuous sequence with traditional brown dwarfs in any property (mass, effective temperature, radius, luminosity). Several mechanisms have been proposed for the formation of brown dwarfs, but there is as yet no consensus as to which -- if any -- are operative in nature. Any theory of brown dwarf formation must explain the observed statistics of brown dwarfs. These statistics are limited by selection effects, but they are becoming increasingly discriminating. In particular, it appears (a) that brown dwarfs that are secondaries to Sun-like stars tend to be on wide orbits, $a\ga 100\,{\rm AU}$ (the Brown Dwarf Desert), and (b) that these brown dwarfs have a significantly higher chance of being in a close ($a\…
The detection of brown dwarfs in globular star clusters will allow us to break the degeneracies in age, mass and composition that affect our current models, and therefore to constrain the physics of their atmospheres and interiors. Furthermore, detecting brown dwarfs will help us constrain the properties of the clusters themselves, as they carry information about the clusters' age and dynamics. Great advancements in this field are to be expected in the next ten years, thanks to the extraordinary sensitivity in the infrared of upcoming telescopes like JWST and the ELTs.
Due to magnitude limits, the Gaia survey will not delve as deeply into the local population of brown dwarfs as it will other stellar populations. While hundreds or thousands of brown dwarfs will be measured by Gaia, we propose a different, indirect method wherein studies using Gaia data will help teach us about brown dwarfs: Identifying moving groups that contain brown dwarfs. This use of Gaia data will directly help attempts to disentangle the effects of age and mass on brown dwarf spectra, which opens the possibilities for determining empirical constraints on brown dwarf evolution.
We presented 15 new T dwarfs that were selected from UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey, Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy, and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer surveys, and confirmed with optical to near infrared spectra obtained with the Very Large Telescope and the Gran Telescopio Canarias. Under the right conditions brown dwarfs that gain enough mass late in their lives to cross the hydrogen burning limit will not turn into low-mass stars, but rather remain essentially brown dwarf-like. As outflow activity in low mass protostars is strongly connected to ac- cretion it is reasonable to expect accreting brown dwarfs to also be driving out- flows. In the last three years we have searched for brown dwarf outflows using high quality optical spectra obtained with UVES on the VLT and the technique of spectro-astrometry. To date five brown dwarf outflows have been discovered. Here the method is discussed and the results to date outlined.

In this chapter we review the progress in finding brown dwarfs in large datasets, highlighting the key science goals, and summarising the surveys that have contributed most significantly to the current sample.
The discovery of the first methane brown dwarf provides a framework for describing the important advances in both fundamental physics and astrophysics that are due to the study of companions of stars. The brown dwarf population in the canonical star forming region NGC2264 is so far poorly explored. We present a deep, multi-wavelength, multi-epoch survey of the star forming cluster NGC2264, aimed to identify young brown dwarf candidates in this region. Using criteria including optical/near-infrared colours, variability, Spitzer mid-infrared colour excess, extinction, and Gaia parallax and proper motion (in order of relevance), we select 902 faint red sources with indicators of youth. This paper presents the results of a search for brown dwarfs in the Upper Scorpius Association using data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey. Candidate young brown dwarfs were first chosen by their position in colour magnitude diagrams with further selection based on proper motions to ensure Upper Scorpius membership. Proper motions were derived by comparing UKIDSS and 2MASS data. Using that method we identify 19 new brown dwarfs in the southern part of the association. Gaia will not observe 50000 brown dwarfs, but about 100 times less. However, these <~ 500 brown dwarfs will be benchmarks for many substellar topics. We present results from a Herschel PACS survey of 8 brown dwarfs in the IC 2391 cluster. Our aim was to determine the brown dwarf disk fraction at ages of ~40-50 Myr. None of the 8 brown dwarfs observed were detected in the PACS 70 or 160mu bands. We have determined the detection limits of our survey using the 1-sigma flux upper limits in the PACS far-infrared and the WISE mid-infrared bands. The sensitivity of our observations would only allow for the detection of debris disks with exceptionally large fractional luminosities (>1%). In this paper, we report the discovery of a binary composed of a brown dwarf and a low-mass M dwarf from the observation of the microlensing event OGLE-2014-BLG-0257. Resolution of the very short-lasting caustic crossing combined with the detection of subtle continuous deviation in the lensing light curve induced by the Earth's orbital motion enable us to precisely measure both the Einstein radius θ_E and the lens parallax pi_E, which are the two quantities needed to unambiguously determine the mass and distance to the lens. We present broad-band mid-resolution X-Shooter/VLT spectra for four brown dwarfs of the TW Hya association. Our targets comprise substellar analogs representing the different evolutionary phases in young stellar evolution: For the two diskless brown dwarfs, TWA-26 and TWA-29, we determine the stellar parameters and we study their chromospheric emission line spectrum. For the two accreting brown dwarfs, TWA-27 and TWA-28, we estimate the mass accretion rates from empirical correlations between emission line luminosities and the accretion luminosity.
We present Spitzer/IRAC and MIPS 24mu archival observations for 28 brown dwarfs in the Upper Scorpius (UppSco) region. We find a disk fraction of 10.7%^(+8.7%)_(-3.3%). One object shows a small excess at 24mu but none at shorter wavelengths, and may be a candidate transition disk. Three objects show emission in the 10mu silicate feature and we present compositional fits for these sources. Flat structures are observed for all disk sources in UppSco. We present new optical and near-infrared spectra of WD0137-349; a close white dwarf - brown dwarf non-interacting binary system with a period of $\approx$114 minutes. We have confirmed the presence of H$α$ emission and discovered He, Na, Mg, Si, K, Ca, Ti, and Fe emission lines originating from the brown dwarf atmosphere. This is the first brown dwarf atmosphere to have been observed to exhibit metal emission lines as a direct result of intense irradiation. We model the full-Stokes spectrum of the brown dwarf LSR J1835+3259 in the bands of the diatomic molecules CrH, TiO, and FeH in order to infer its magnetic properties. The models are then compared to the observational data obtained with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (LRISp) at the Keck observatory. Our preliminary analysis shows that the brown dwarf considered possesses a magnetic field of the order of 2-3 kG.
Recent observations with the infrared astronomical satellite AKARI have shown that the CO2 bands at 4.2 micron in three brown dwarfs are much stronger than expected from the unified cloudy model (UCM) based on recent solar C & O abundances. This result has been a puzzle, but we now find that this is simply an abundance effect: We show that these strong CO2 bands can be explained with the UCMs based on the classical C & O abundances (log Ac and log Ao), which are about 0.2 dex larger compared to the recent values. We report on the discovery of the young, nearby, brown dwarf 2MASS J0041353$-$562112. The object has a spectral type of M7.5, it shows Li absorption and signatures of accretion, which implies that it still has a disk and suggests an age below 10 Myr. The space motion vector and position on the sky indicate that the brown dwarf is probably a member of the $\sim$20 Myr old Tuc-Hor association, or that it may be an ejected member of the $\sim$12 Myr old $β$ Pic association, both would imply that 2MASS J0041353$-$562112 may in fact be older than 10 Myr. We identify Gaia0007-1605AC as the first inner brown dwarf-white dwarf binary of a hierarchical triple system in which the outer component is another white dwarf (Gaia0007-1605B). We derive the radii of 16 brown dwarfs observed by AKARI using their parallaxes and the ratios of observed to model fluxes. We find that the brown dwarf radius ranges between 0.64-1.13 RJ with an average radius of 0.83 RJ. We find a trend in the relation between radii and Teff; the radius is at a minimum at Teff~1600 K, which corresponds to the spectral types of mid-to late-L. The result is interpreted by a combination of radius-mass and radius-age relations that are theoretically expected for brown dwarfs older than 10^8 yr.

We report photometric observations of the eclipsing close binary CSS21055 (SDSS J141126+200911) that strongly suggest that the companion to the carbon-oxygen white dwarf is a brown dwarf with a mass between 0.030 and 0.074 Msun. The measured orbital period is 121.73min and the totality of the eclipse lasts 125s. If confirmed, CSS21055 would be the first detached eclipsing WD+BD binary. Spectroscopy in the eclipse could provide information about the companion's evolutionary state and atmospheric structure.
Young brown dwarfs and directly-imaged exoplanets have enticingly similar photometric and spectroscopic characteristics, indicating that their cool, low gravity atmospheres should be studied in concert. We present the discovery of three late type (>T4) brown dwarfs, including a probable Y dwarf, in the WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallels (WISP) Survey. We use the G141 grism spectra to determine the spectral types of the dwarfs and derive distance estimates based on a comparison with nearby T dwarfs with known parallaxes. These are the most distant spectroscopically confirmed T/Y dwarfs, with the farthest at an estimated distance of ~400 pc. We have spectroscopically confirmed a brown dwarf mass companion to the hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf NLTT5306. The white dwarf's atmospheric parameters were measured using Sloan Digital Sky Survey and X-Shooter spectroscopy as T_eff=7756+/-35K and log(g)=7.68+/-0.08, giving a mass for the primary of M_WD=0.44+/-0.04 M_sun, at a distance of 71+/-4 pc with a cooling age of 710+/-50 Myr. We have observed the post common envelope binary WD0137-349 in the near infrared $J$, $H$ and $K$ bands and have determined that the photometry varies on the system period (116 min). The amplitude of the variability increases with increasing wavelength, indicating that the brown dwarf in the system is likely being irradiated by its 16500 K white dwarf companion. We present a census of the disk population for UKIDSS selected brown dwarfs in the 5-10 Myr old Upper Scorpius OB association. For 116 objects originally identified in UKIDSS, the majority of them not studied in previous publications, we obtain photometry from the WISE database. The resulting colour-magnitude and colour-colour plots clearly show two separate populations of objects, interpreted as brown dwarfs with disks (class II) and without disks (class III). We present new XSHOOTER spectra of NLTT5306, a 0.44 $\pm$ 0.04\msun white dwarf in a short period (101\,min) binary system with a brown dwarf companion that is likely to have previously undergone common envelope evolution. We have confirmed the presence of H$α$ emission and discovered Na I absorption associated with the white dwarf. These observations are indicative of accretion. Accretion is typically evidenced by high energy emission in the UV and X-ray regime. The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has detected the close binary brown dwarf system CFBDSIR 1458+1013AB as WISEP J145829.35+101341.8 with a combined magnitude at 4.6 microns of W2 = 15.488+/-0.147. This allows a comparison with another "coolest" brown dwarf candidate WD 0806-661B that has been observed at 4.5 microns with [4.5] = 16.75+/-0.05. Here we use the WISE data to show that 1458+1013B is almost certainly warmer and more luminous than WD 0806-661B.
The mass domain where massive extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs overlap is still poorly understood due to the paucity of brown dwarfs orbiting close to solar-type stars, the so-called brown dwarf desert. Transiting brown dwarfs around solar like stars were studied by using the photometric time-series of CoRoT, and ground based radial velocity measurements. Results. CoRoT detected three transiting brown dwarfs around F and G dwarf stars. The occurence rate of brown dwarfs was found to be 0.20 +/- 0.15% around solar-like stars which is compatible with the value obtained by Kepler-data.

Recent studies have shown that close-in brown dwarfs in the mass range 35-55 M$_{\rm Jup}$ are almost depleted as companions to stars, suggesting that objects with masses above and below this gap might have different formation mechanisms. We determine the fundamental stellar parameters, as well as individual abundances for a large sample of stars known to have a substellar companion in the brown dwarf regime. We present the discovery of only the third brown dwarf known to eclipse a non-accreting white dwarf. Gaia parallax information and multi-colour photometry confirm that the white dwarf is cool (9950$\pm$150K) and has a low mass (0.45$\pm$0.05~MSun), and spectra and lightcurves suggest the brown dwarf has a mass of 0.067 $\pm$0.006 MSun (70 MJup) and a spectral type of L5 $\pm$1. The kinematics of the system show that the binary is likely to be a member of the thick disk and therefore at least 5 Gyr old. We present Spitzer observations at 3.6 and 4.5 microns and a near-infrared IRTF SpeX spectrum of the irradiated brown dwarf NLTT5306B. We determine that the brown dwarf has a spectral type of L5 and is likely inflated, despite the low effective temperature of the white dwarf primary star. We calculate brightness temperatures in the Spitzer wavebands for both the model radius, and Roche Lobe radius of the brown dwarf, and conclude that there is very little day-night side temperature difference. We review the statistical properties of stars and brown dwarfs obtained from the first hydrodynamical simulation of star cluster formation to produce more than a thousand stars and brown dwarfs while simultaneously resolving the lowest mass brown dwarfs (those with masses set by the opacity limit for fragmentation), binaries with separations down to 1 AU, and discs with radii greater than 10 AU. In particular, we present the eccentricity distribution of the calculation's very-low-mass and brown dwarf binaries which has not been previously published.
We present an analytical model for the evolution of brown dwarfs in quadratic Palatini f(R) gravity. We improve previous studies by adopting a more realistic description of the partially-degenerate state that characterizes brown dwarfs. Furthermore, we take into account the hydrogen metallic-molecular phase transition between the interior of the brown dwarf and its photosphere. For such improved model, we revise the cooling process of sub-stellar objects.
We present sensitive 3.0 cm JVLA radio continuum observations of six regions of low-mass star formation that include twelve young brown dwarfs and four young brown dwarf candidates. We detect a total of 49 compact radio sources in the fields observed, of which 24 have no reported counterparts and are considered new detections. Twelve of the radio sources show variability in timescales of weeks to months, suggesting gyrosynchrotron emission produced in active magnetospheres. The discovery of 9 new brown-dwarf candidates orbiting stars in the CORALIE and HARPS radial-velocity surveys is reported. New CORALIE radial velocities yielding accurate orbits of 6 previously-known hosts of potential brown-dwarf companions are presented. Including targets selected from the literature, 33 hosts of potential brown-dwarf companions are examined. Employing innovative methods, we use the new reduction of the Hipparcos data to fully characterise the astrometric orbits of 6 objects, revealing M-dwarf companions with masses between 90 M_Jup and 0.52 M_Sun. High resolution spectroscopy of the lowest-mass stars and brown dwarfs reveals their origins, multiplicity, compositions and physical properties, with implications for the star formation and chemical evolution history of the Milky Way. We motivate the need for high-resolution, infrared spectroscopic surveys to reach these faint sources.
