We derive constraints on a possible velocity-dependent DM-nucleon scattering cross section, for Dark Matter in the 10 MeV -- 100 GeV mass range, using the XQC, DAMIC, and CRESST 2017 Surface Run experiments. We report the limits on cross sections of the form $σ=σ_0\,v^n$, for a range of velocity dependencies with $n\in\{-4,-2,-1,0,1,2\}$. We point out the need to measure the efficiency with which nuclear recoil energy in the sub-keV range thermalizes, rather than being stored as Frenkel pairs in the semi-conductor lattice. The possibility of a significant inefficiency leaves open a considerable `hole' in the limits for mass in the $\sim$ 0.2 -- 2 GeV range, which XQC and CRESST can potentially fill when the thermalization efficiency is measured. We call attention to the asymmetry between a conventional lower limit cross section and the `upper-reach cross section' imposed by attenuation in an overburden -- an upper boundary being extremely sharp but quite insensitive to the statistics of the experiment. Considering the recent interest to use dark matter-baryon interaction with velocity dependence $n=-4$ to explain the EDGES 21 cm anomaly, we also derive the limits on milli-charged DM that scatters off protons and electrons under a Coulomb-like interaction. We find that much but not all of the region of interest for the EDGES anomaly can be excluded.
The eikonal approximation for the total cross section for the scattering of two unpolarized particles is studied. The approximate formula in the case when the eikonal function chi(b) is moderately small, |chi(b)| < 0.1, is derived. It is shown that the total cross section is given by the series of multiple improper integrals of the Born amplitude A_B. Its advantage compared to standard eikonal formulas is that the integrals contain no rapidly oscillating Bessel functions. Two theorems which allow one to relate large-b behavior of chi(b) with analytical properties of the Born amplitude are prov…
Neutrinos are key to probing the deep structure of matter and the high-energy Universe. Yet, until recently, their interactions had only been measured at laboratory energies up to about 350 GeV. An opportunity to measure their interactions at higher energies opened up with the detection of high-energy neutrinos in IceCube, partially of astrophysical origin. Scattering off matter inside the Earth affects the distribution of their arrival directions --- from this, we extract the neutrino-nucleon cross section at energies from 18 TeV to 2 PeV, in four energy bins, in spite of uncertainties in the…
A prime number based parametrization for total neutrino-nucleon cross section is presented. The method employs the relation between prime numbers and their indices to reproduce neutrino cross sections for neutrino energies from the $MeV$ to the $PeV$ regions where experimental data are available. This prime-index relation provides estimates of the neutrino-nucleon cross sections valid across many decades of neutrino energy scales. The $PeV$ data are from the recently published astrophysical $ν_μ+ \bar ν_μ$ rates in the IceCube detector as well as neutrino-nucleon cross section measurements. A …
Experimental results of inclusive hard-process cross sections in heavy-ion collisions conventionally lean on a normalization computed from Glauber models where the inelastic nucleon-nucleon cross section $σ_{\rm nn}^{\rm inel}$ -- a crucial input parameter -- is simply taken from proton-proton measurements. In this letter, using the computed electro-weak boson production cross sections in lead-lead collisions as a benchmark, we determine $σ_{\rm nn}^{\rm inel}$ from the recent ATLAS data. We find a significantly suppressed $σ_{\rm nn}^{\rm inel}$ relative to what is usually assumed, show the c…
Among dark-matter candidates are the WIMPs (Weekly Interacting Massive Particles). Low-threshold detectors could directly detect dark-matter by measuring the energy deposited by the particles. In this work we examine the cross section for the elastic scattering of WIMPs on nucleons, in the spin-dependent and spin-independent channels. WIMPs are taken as neutralinos in the context of the minimal super-symmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM). The dependence of the results with the adopted MSSM parameters is discussed.
Celestial objects such as stars and planets might be able to capture a large amount of dark matter particles through dark matter-nucleon scattering. Many previous studies have considered different celestial objects such as the Sun and the Earth as natural dark matter detectors and obtained some stringent bounds of the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section. In this study, we use the $\sim 10$ MeV electron neutrino flux limits obtained by the Super-Kamiokande experiment and consider the Earth as a large natural dark matter detector to constrain the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross sec…
Analytical evolution of nucleon structure functions with power corrections at twist-4 and predictions for ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon cross section
Axial and Vector Structure Functions for Electron- and Neutrino- Nucleon Scattering Cross Sections at all $Q^2$ using Effective Leading order Parton Distribution Functions
A joint fit to neutrino-nucleon scattering and pion electroproduction data is performed to evaluate the nucleon axial form factor in the two-component model consisting of a three-quark intrinsic structure surrounded by a meson cloud. Further constrains on the model are obtained by re-evaluating the electromagnetic form factor using electron scattering data. The results of the axial form factor show sizable differences with respect to the widely used dipole model. The impact of such changes on the Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic neutrino-nucleus cross-section is evaluated in the SuSAv2 nuclear mo…
In the E6 inspired $U(1)_N$ extension of the minimal supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model (MSSM) a single discrete $\tilde{Z}^{H}_2$ symmetry permits suppressing rapid proton decay and non-diagonal flavour transitions. If matter parity and $\tilde{Z}^{H}_2$ symmetry are preserved this SUSY model (SE4-6$SSM) may involve two dark matter candidates. In this article we study a new modification of the SE6SSM in which the cold dark matter is composed of gravitino and the lightest neutral exotic fermion. We argue that in this case the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section can be considerably s…
Even though the total hadronic nucleus-nucleus cross section is among the most fundamental observables, it has only recently been measured precisely for lead-lead collisions at the LHC. This measurement implies the nucleon width should be below 0.7 fm, which is in contradiction with all known state-of-the-art Bayesian estimates. We study the implications of the smaller nucleon width on quark-gluon plasma properties such as the bulk viscosity. The smaller nucleon width dramatically improves the description of several triple-differential observables.
Paris nucleon-antinucleon potential constrained by recent antiprotonic-atom data and antineutron-proton total cross sections
