This paper is focused on the generalized Forchheimer flows for slightly compressible fluids. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the differential system for stationary problem. The technique of semi-discretization in time is used to prove the existence of solution for the transient problem.
Numerical treatment of the problem of two-dimensional viscous fluid flow in and around circular porous inclusions is considered. The mathematical model is described by Navier-Stokes equation in the free flow domain $Ω_f$ and nonlinear convective Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer equations in porous subdomains $Ω_p$. It is well-known that numerical solutions of the problems in such heterogeneous domains require a very fine computational mesh that resolve inclusions on the grid level. The size alteration of the relevant system requires model reduction techniques. Here, we present a multiscale model red…
This paper develops the a priori analysis of a mixed finite element method for the filtration of an incompressible fluid through a non-deformable saturated porous medium with heterogeneous permeability. Flows are governed by the Brinkman--Forchheimer and Darcy equations in the more and less permeable regions, respectively, and the corresponding transmission conditions are given by mass conservation and continuity of momentum. We consider the standard mixed formulation in the Brinkman--Forchheimer domain and the dual-mixed one in the Darcy region, and we impose the continuity of the normal velo…
In this paper, we develop a discretization for the non-linear coupled model of classical Darcy-Forchheimer flow in deformable porous media, an extension of the quasi-static Biot equations. The continuous model exhibits a generalized gradient flow structure, identifying the dissipative character of the physical system. The considered mixed finite element discretization is compatible with this structure, which gives access to a simple proof for the existence, uniqueness, and stability of discrete approximations. Moreover, still within the framework, the discretization allows for the development …
We propose and analyze an augmented mixed finite element method for the pseudostress-velocity formulation of the stationary convective Brinkman-Forchheimer problem in $\mathrm{R}^d$, $d\in \{2,3\}$. Since the convective and Forchheimer terms forces the velocity to live in a smaller space than usual, we augment the variational formulation with suitable Galerkin type terms. The resulting augmented scheme is written equivalently as a fixed point equation, so that the well-known Schauder and Banach theorems, combined with the Lax-Milgram theorem, allow to prove the unique solvability of the contin…
In this paper, we propose a multiscale method for the Darcy-Forchheimer model in highly heterogeneous porous media. The problem is solved in the framework of generalized multiscale finite element methods (GMsFEM) combined with a multipoint flux mixed finite element (MFMFE) method. %In the MFMFE methods, appropriate mixed finite element spaces and suitable quadrature rules are employed, which allow for local velocity elimination and lead to a cell-centered system for the pressure. We consider the MFMFE method that utilizes the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Marini ($\textrm{BDM}_1$) mixed finite e…
In this work, a new discretization approach for coupled free and porous-medium flows is introduced, which uses a finite volume staggered-grid method for the discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations in the free-flow subdomain, while a vertex-centered finite volume method is used in the porous-medium flow domain. The latter allows for the use of unstructured grids in the porous-medium subdomain, and the presented method is capable of handling non-matching grids at the interface. In addition, the accurate evaluation of coupling terms and of additional nonlinear velocity-dependent terms in th…
Intelligent backpropagated neural networks application on Couette-Poiseuille flow of variable viscosity in a composite porous channel filled with an anisotropic porous layer
This paper presents and analyzes a discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible three-phase flow problem in porous media. We use a first order time extrapolation which allows us to solve the equations implicitly and sequentially. We show that the discrete problem is well-posed, and obtain a priori error estimates. Our numerical results validate the theoretical results, i.e. the algorithm converges with first order.
A finite element method with mass-lumping and flux upwinding, is formulated for solving the immiscible two-phase flow problem in porous media. The method approximates directly the wetting phase pressure and saturation, which are the primary unknowns. The discrete saturation satisfies a maximum principle. Theoretical convergence is proved via a compactness argument. The proof is convoluted because of the degeneracy of the phase mobilities and the unboundedness of the capillary pressure.
In this work we present the mathematical models for single-phase flow in fractured porous media. An overview of the most common approaches is considered, which includes continuous fracture models and discrete fracture models. For the latter, we discuss strategies that are developed in literature for its numerical solution mainly related to the geometrical relation between the fractures and porous media grids.
We consider sewing machinery between finite difference and analytical solutions defined at different scale: far away and near source of the perturbation of the flow. One of the essences of the approach is that coarse problem and boundary value problem in the proxy of the source model two different flows. We are proposing method to glue solution via total fluxes, which is predefined on coarse grid. It is important to mention that the coarse solution "does not see" boundary. From industrial point of view our report provide mathematical tool for analytical interpretation of simulated data for flu…
In this work we propose a non-dimensionalization approach for the Stokes-Brinkman model for flow in porous media. We study the effect of the dimensionless number found, which will be denoted by A and named as Anna's number, has on the outflow and transition between the Darcy and Stokes regime.
