The problem of finding subfield subcodes of generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes (i.e., alternant codes) is considered. A pure linear algebraic approach is taken in order to derive message constraints that generalize the well known conjugacy constraints for cyclic GRS codes and their Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) subfield subcodes. It is shown that the presented technique can be used for finding nested subfield subcodes with increasing design distance.
A major drawback of many PIR schemes is the highcomputational cost at the servers. We present a scheme that usesonly operations in the prime field during response generation. For binary extension fields this leads to schemes that only needXOR operations at the servers to calculate the responses. This isachieved by restricting the queries to a subfield subcode or tracecode. We investigate possible parameter ranges and focus on theexample of GRS codes and subfield subcodes of these.
Subfield subcodes of algebraic-geometric codes are good candidates for the use in post-quantum cryptosystems, provided their true parameters such as dimension and minimum distance can be determined. In this paper we present new values of the true dimension of subfield subcodes of $1$--point Hermitian codes, including the case when the subfield is not binary.
We consider linear cyclic codes with the locality property, or locally recoverable codes (LRC codes). A family of LRC codes that generalizes the classical construction of Reed-Solomon codes was constructed in a recent paper by I. Tamo and A. Barg (IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, no. 8, 2014; arXiv:1311.3284). In this paper we focus on the optimal cyclic codes that arise from the general construction. We give a characterization of these codes in terms of their zeros, and observe that there are many equivalent ways of constructing optimal cyclic LRC codes over a given field. We also stu…
Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are very important in both theory and practice. There is a classical construction of a family of $[2^m+1, 2u-1, 2^m-2u+3]$ MDS codes for $1 \leq u \leq 2^{m-1}$, which are cyclic, reversible and BCH codes over $\mathrm{GF}(2^m)$. The objective of this paper is to study the quaternary subfield subcodes and quaternary subfield codes of a subfamily of the MDS codes for even $m$. A family of quaternary cyclic codes is obtained. These quaternary codes are distance-optimal in some cases and very good in general. Furthermore, infinite families of $3$-designs fro…
In this article we describe how to find the parameters of subfield subcodes of extended Norm--Trace codes. With a Gröbner basis of the ideal of the $\mathbb{F}_{q^r}$ rational points of the Norm--Trace curve one can determine the dimension of the subfield subcodes or the dimension of the trace code. We also find a BCH--like bound from the minimum distance of the original supercode.
In this paper, we study the behavior of the true dimension of the subfield subcodes of Hermitian codes. Our motivation is to use these classes of linear codes to improve the parameters of the McEliece cryptosystem, such that key size and security level. The McEliece scheme is one of the promising alternative cryptographic schemes to the current public key schemes since in the last four decades, they resisted all known quantum computing attacks. By analyzing computational data series of true dimension, we concluded that they can be estimated by the extreme value distribution function.
Most of the codes that have an algebraic decoding algorithm are derived from the Reed Solomon codes. They are obtained by taking equivalent codes, for example the generalized Reed Solomon codes, or by using the so-called subfield subcode method, which leads to Alternant codes and Goppa codes over the underlying prime field, or over some intermediate subfield. The main advantages of these constructions is to preserve both the minimum distance and the decoding algorithm of the underlying Reed Solomon code. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the subfield subcode construction by introdu…
In this article, we present a new construction of codes from algebraic curves. Given a curve over a non-prime finite field, the obtained codes are defined over a subfield. We call them Cartier Codes since their construction involves the Cartier operator. This new class of codes can be regarded as a natural geometric generalisation of classical Goppa codes. In particular, we prove that a well-known property satisfied by classical Goppa codes extends naturally to Cartier codes. We prove general lower bounds for the dimension and the minimum distance of these codes and compare our construction wi…
LCD codes are linear codes with important cryptographic applications. Recently, a method has been presented to transform any linear code into an LCD code with the same parameters when it is supported on a finite field with cardinality larger than 3. Hence, the study of LCD codes is mainly open for binary and ternary fields. Subfield-subcodes of $J$-affine variety codes are a generalization of BCH codes which have been successfully used for constructing good quantum codes. We describe binary and ternary LCD codes constructed as subfield-subcodes of $J$-affine variety codes and provide some new …
We introduce a new class of evaluation linear codes by evaluating polynomials at the roots of a suitable trace function. We give conditions for self-orthogonality of these codes and their subfield-subcodes with respect to the Hermitian inner product. They allow us to construct stabilizer quantum codes over several finite fields which substantially improve the codes in the literature and that are records at [http://www.codetables.de] for the binary case. Moreover, we obtain several classical linear codes over the field $\mathbb{F}_4$ which are records at [http://www.codetables.de].
We use class field theory, specifically Drinfeld modules of rank 1, to construct a family of asymptotically good algebraic-geometric (AG) codes over fixed alphabets. Over a field of size $\ell^2$, these codes are within $2/(\sqrt{\ell}-1)$ of the Singleton bound. The functions fields underlying these codes are subfields with a cyclic Galois group of the narrow ray class field of certain function fields. The resulting codes are "folded" using a generator of the Galois group. This generalizes earlier work by the first author on folded AG codes based on cyclotomic function fields. Using the Chebo…
