In this paper, we explained the observed $Γ_{\rm 2-10keV}-L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$ correlation in luminous active galactic nuclei within the framework of the condensation of the corona around a supermassive black hole (Liu et al. 2015; Qiao & Liu 2017). Specifically, we systemically test the effects of black hole mass $M$, the viscosity parameter $α$, and the magnetic parameter $β$ (with magnetic pressure $p_{\rm m}=B^2/{8π}=(1-β)p_{\rm tot}$, $p_{\rm tot}=p_{\rm gas}+p_{\rm m}$) on the structure of the accretion disc and the corona, as well as the corresponding emergent spectra. It is found that the hard X-ray photon index $Γ_{\rm 2-10keV}$ nearly does not change with changing black hole mass $M$, or changing magnetic parameter $β$. Meanwhile, it is found that the geometry of the accretion flow, i.e., the relative configuration of the disc and corona, as well as the emergent spectra can be strongly affected by changing the value of $α$. By comparing with a sample composed of 29 luminous active galactic nuclei with well constrained X-ray spectra and Eddington ratios, it is found that the observed $Γ_{\rm 2-10keV}-L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$ correlation can be well matched with a relatively bigger value of $α$, i.e., $α\sim 1$, as previously also suggested by Narayan (1996) for luminous accreting black holes.
We compile a blue AGN sample from SDSS and investigate the ratio of hard X-ray to bolometric luminosity in dependence on Eddington ratio and black hole mass. Our sample comprises 240 radio-quiet Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs. We find that the fraction of hard X-ray luminosity (log$(L_{\rm 2-10 kev}/L_{\rm bol})$) decreases with the increase of Eddington ratio. We also find that the fraction of hard X-ray luminosity is independent on the black hole mass for the radio-quiet AGNs. The relation of log$(L_{\rm 2-10 kev}/L_{\rm bol})$ decreasing with increasing Eddington ratio indicates that X-ray bol…

Observations show that there is a positive correlation between Eddington ratio $λ$ and hard X-ray index $Γ$ for $λ\gtrsim 0.01$, and there is an anti-correlation between $λ$ and $Γ$ for $λ\lesssim 0.01$ in black hole X-ray binaries (with $λ=L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$). In this work, we theoretically investigate the correlation between $Γ$ and $λ$ within the framework of disk-corona model. We improve the model by taking into account all cooling processes including synchrotron and self-Compton radiations in the corona, Comptonization of the soft photons from the underlying accretion disk, and the …
We explore the accretion states of tidal disruption events (TDEs) using a sample of 7 X- ray bright sources. To this end, we estimate the relative contribution of the disk and corona to the observed X-ray emission through spectral modeling, and assess the X-ray brightness (through $α$_ox, L$_{2 keV}$ and f$_{Edd,X}$) as a function of the Eddington ratio. We report strong positive correlations between $α$_ox and f$_{Edd,bol}$; f$_{Edd,X}$ and f$_{Edd,UV}$ ; and an anti-correlation for L$_{2 keV}$ and f$_{Edd,UV}$. TDEs at high f$_{Edd,bol}$ have thermal dominated X-ray spectra and high (soft) $…
We use global three dimensional radiation magneto-hydrodynamic simulations to study the properties of inner regions of accretion disks around a 5\times 10^8 solar mass black hole with mass accretion rates reaching 7% and 20% of the Eddington value. This region of the disk is supported by magnetic pressure with surface density significantly smaller than the values predicted by the standard thin disk model but with a much larger disk scale height. The disks do not show any sign of thermal instability over many thermal time scales. More than half of the accretion is driven by radiation viscosity …
We present a systematic X-ray and multiwavelength study of a sample of 47 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with reverberation-mapping measurements. This sample includes 21 super-Eddington accreting AGNs and 26 sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. Using high-state observations with simultaneous X-ray and UV/optical measurements, we investigate whether super-Eddington accreting AGNs exhibit different accretion disk-corona connections compared to sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. We find tight correlations between the X-ray-to-UV/optical spectral slope parameter ($α_{\rm OX}$) and the monochromatic luminosity …
The observed tight radio/X-ray correlation in the low spectral state of some black hole X-ray binaries implies the strong coupling of the accretion and jet. The correlation of $L_{\rm R} \propto L_{\rm X}^{\sim 0.5-0.7}$ was well explained by the coupling of a radiatively inefficient accretion flow and a jet. Recently, however, a growing number of sources show more complicated radio/X-ray correlations, e.g., $L_{\rm R} \propto L_{\rm X}^{\sim 1.4}$ for $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim 10^{-3}$, which is suggested to be explained by the coupling of a radiatively efficient accretion flow and a jet…

The bulk of the X-ray emission in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is produced very close to the accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH), in a corona of hot electrons which up scatters optical and ultraviolet photons from the accretion flow. The cutoff energy ($E_{\rm C}$) of the primary X-ray continuum emission carries important information on the physical characteristics of the X-ray emitting plasma, but little is currently known about its potential relation with the properties of accreting SMBHs. Using the largest broad-band (0.3-150 keV) X-ray spectroscopic study available to date, we investi…
Ark 564 is an archetypal Narrow line Seyfert 1 that has been well observed in soft X-rays from 0.3-10 keV, revealing a steep spectrum, strong soft excess, iron K emission line and dramatic variability on the order of hours. Because of its very steep spectrum, observations of the source above 10 keV have been sparse. We report here on the first NuSTAR observation of Ark 564. The source was observed for 200 ks with NuSTAR, 50 ks of which were concurrent with Suzaku observations. NuSTAR and Suzaku observed a dramatic flare, in which the hard emission is clearly delayed with respect to the soft em…
It was suggested that the large scale magnetic field can be dragged inwards efficiently by the corona above the disc, i.e., the so called "coronal mechanism" (Beckwith, Hawley, \& Krolik 2009), which provides a way to solve the difficulty of field advection in a geometrically thin accretion disc. In this case, the magnetic pressure should be lower than the gas pressure in the corona. We estimate the maximal power of the jets accelerated by the magnetic field advected by the corona. The Blandford-Payne (BP) jet power is found always to be higher than the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) jet power, except …
Here we discuss the jet production efficiency in a sample of 17 young radio galaxies with measured redshifts, kinematic ages, and nuclear X-ray fluxes, for which the observed luminosities of compact jets/lobes and accretion disks correspond to the same episode of the AGN activity. For the targets, we analyze the available optical data, estimating the bolometric luminosities of the accretion disks $L_{\rm bol}$, and the black hole masses; we also derive the minimum jet kinetic luminosities, $P_{\rm j}$. With such, we investigate the distribution of our sample in the three-dimensional space of t…
There is a significant nonlinear correlation between the Eddington ratio (L_bol=L_Edd) and the Eddington-scaled kinetic power (L_kin=L_Edd) of jets in low luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) (Merloni & Heinz). It is believed that these low luminosity AGNs contain advection dominated accretion flows (ADAFs). We adopt the ADAF model developed by Li & Cao, in which the global dynamics of ADAFs with magnetically driven outflows is derived numerically, to explore the relation between bolometric luminosity and kinetic power of jets. We find that the observed relation, L_kin/L_Edd ~ (L_bol=L_Edd…
Black hole systems with outflows are characterized by intrinsic physical quantities such as the outflow beam power, $L_j$, the bolometric accretion disk luminosity, $L_{bol}$, and black hole mass or Eddington luminosity, $L_{Edd}$. When these systems produce compact radio emission and X-ray emission, they can be placed on the fundamental plane (FP), an empirical relationship between compact radio luminosity, X-ray luminosity, and black hole mass. We consider a fundamental line (FL) of black hole activity written in terms of dimensionless intrinsic physical quantities: $\rm{log} (L_j/L_{Edd}) =…
Using a sample of 208 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from Swift/BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey in ultra-hard X-ray band ($14-195$ keV), the hot corona properties are investigated, i.e. the fraction of gravitational energy dissipated in the hot corona and the hard X-ray photon index. The bolometric luminosity, \lb, is calculated from host-corrected luminosity at 5100 Å. Virial supermassive black hole masses (SMBH, \mbh) are calculated from the $\rm Hβ$ line width and the corresponding broad line region size-luminosity empirical relation at 5100 Å. We find a strong anti-correlation betwe…
Changing-look active galactic nuclei (CLAGNs) show the disappearance and reappearance of broad emission lines in a few years, which challenges the orientation-based AGN unification model. We reduce the X-ray data for five well-studied CLAGNs that show a strong change in broad emission lines in the past several decades. We find that the X-ray photon index, $Γ$, and the Eddington-scaled X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$, normally follow negative and positive correlations when the Eddington ratio is lower and higher than a critical value of $\sim 10^{-3}$. We find that the CLAGNs o…
The X-ray emission from bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is believed to originate in a hot corona lying above a cold, geometrically thin accretion disk. A highly concentrated corona located within $\sim10$ gravitational radii above the black hole is inferred from observations. Based on the accretion of interstellar medium/wind, a disk corona model has been proposed in which the corona is well coupled to the disk by radiation, thermal conduction, as well as by mass exchange \citep{Liu2015, Qiao2017}. Such a model avoids artificial energy input to the corona and has been used to interpret th…
The corona is an integral component of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) which produces the bulk of the X-ray emission above 1--2 keV. However, many of its physical properties and the mechanisms powering this emission remain a mystery. In particular, the temperature of the coronal plasma has been difficult to constrain for large samples of AGN, as constraints require high quality broadband X-ray spectral coverage extending above 10 keV in order to measure the high energy cutoff, which provides constraints on the combination of coronal optical depth and temperature. We present constraints on the cor…
We present an investigation into how well the properties of the accretion flow onto a supermassive black hole may be coupled to those of the overlying hot corona. To do so, we specifically measure the characteristic spectral index, Gamma, of a power-law energy distribution, over an energy range of 2 to 10 keV, for X-ray selected, broad-lined radio-quiet AGN up to z~2 in COSMOS and E-CDF-S. We test the previously reported dependence between Gamma and black hole mass, FWHM and Eddington ratio using a sample of AGN covering a broad range in these parameters based on both the Mg ii and H-alpha emi…

Radio emission from the high- and super-Eddington accreting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has various origins: a persistent jet, the magnetized corona and the wind-like outflows. It is now still unclear which is the leading mechanism responsible for the observed radio emission and how the radio emission is related to other characteristic parameters such as the Eddington ratio and black hole mass. In this paper, we present the 5 GHz Very Large Array (VLA) observational results of a sample of 25 extremely high Eddington accreting supermassive black holes (EESBHs, the Eddington ratio close to or …
The physical properties of the accretion flow and of the X-ray emitting plasma, in supermassive black holes accreting at extreme Eddington rates, are still very unclear. Here we present the analysis of simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the hyper-Eddington Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 04416+1215, carried out in 2020. The main goal of these observations is to investigate the properties of the X-ray corona, as well as the structure of the accretion flow and of the circumnuclear environment, in this regime of extreme accretion. IRAS 04416+1215 has one of the highest Eddington ratio ($λ_{…
We revisit the dependence of covering factor (CF) of dust torus on physical properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by taking into account an AGN polar dust emission. The CF is converted from a ratio of infrared (IR) luminosity contributed from AGN dust torus ($L_{\rm IR}^{\rm torus}$) and AGN bolometric luminosity ($L_{\rm bol}$), by assuming a non-linear relation between luminosity ratio and intrinsic CF. We select 37,181 type 1 quasars at $z < 0.7$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16 quasar catalog. Their $L_{\rm bol}$, black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$), and Eddington ratio (…
Non-thermal X-ray emission in compact accretion engines can be interpreted to result from magnetic dissipation in an optically thin magnetized corona above an optically thick accretion disk. If coronal magnetic field originates in the disk and the disk is turbulent, then only magnetic structures large enough for their turbulent shredding time to exceed their buoyant rise time survive the journey to the corona. We use this concept and a physical model to constrain the minimum fraction of magnetic energy above the critical scale for buoyancy as a function of the observed coronal to bolometric em…
Recent observations reveal that a cool disk may survive in the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) for some black hole X-ray binaries in the canonical low/hard state. The spectrum is characterized by a power law with a photon index $Γ\sim 1.5-2.1$ in the range of 2-10 keV and a weak disk component with temperature of $\sim 0.2$ keV. In this work, We revisit the formation of such a cool, optically thick, geometrically thin disk in the most inner region of black hole X-ray binaries at the low/hard state within the context of disk accretion fed by condensation of hot corona. By taking into acc…
We present the first systematic broad-band X-ray study of super-Eddington accretion onto SMBHs with simultaneous {\it NuSTAR} and {\it XMM-Newton} or {\it Swift}/XRT observations of a sample of 8 super-Eddington accreting AGN with Eddington ratio $1<λ_{\rm Edd}<426$. We find that the SEAMBHs show a steep primary continuum slope as expected for sources accreting in the super Eddington regime, mostly dominated by relativistic reflection. The Iron K$α$ emission lines of the sources of our sample show relativistic broadening. In addition the equivalent widths of the narrow components of the Iron K…
The origin of the variable X-ray emission in the $(0.3-30)\,$keV energy range of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) remains unclear, making it difficult to constrain the mass of the central compact object. X-ray luminosities of bright ULXs can be explained with sub-critical accretion ($L<L_{\rm Edd}$) on to an intermediate-mass BH, with the alternative being super-critical accretion on to a stellar-mass BH. Broadband X-ray emission in the former scenario can be explained using the canonical disk plus Comptonizing corona model, whereas in the latter scenario radiation pressure driven massive wi…
A star tidally disrupted by a black hole can form an accretion disc with a super-Eddington mass accretion rate; the X-ray emission produced by the inner disc provides constraints on the black hole mass $M_\bullet$ and dimensionless spin parameter $a_\bullet$. Previous studies have suggested that the $M_\bullet$ responsible for the tidal disruption event 3XMM J150052.0+015452 (hereafter J150052) is $\sim$10$^{5} M_{\odot}$, in the intermediate black hole (IMBH) regime. Fitting multi-epoch XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray spectra obtained after 2008 during the source's decade-long decay, with our la…
We perform a comprehensive analysis of a population of 19 X-ray bright tidal disruption events (TDEs), fitting their X-ray spectra with a new, physically self consistent, relativistic accretion disc model. Not all of the TDEs inhabit regions of parameter space where the model is valid, or have sufficient data for a detailed analysis, and physically interpretable parameters for a sub-sample of 11 TDEs are determined. These sources have thermal (power-law free) X-ray spectra. The radial sizes measured from these spectra lie at values consistent with the inner-most stable circular orbit of black …
The observation of energetic X-ray emission from black holes, inconsistent with thermal emission from an accretion disk, has long indicated the presence of a "corona" around these objects. However, our knowledge of the geometry, composition, and processes within black hole coronae is severely lacking. Basic questions regarding their size and location are still a topic of debate. In this letter, we show that for black holes with luminosities $L\gtrsim10^{-2}L_{Edd}$ -- characteristic of many Seyferts, quasars, and stellar-mass black holes (in their brighter states) -- advanced imaging and timin…

We discuss two methods to estimate black hole (BH) masses using X-ray data only: from the X-ray variability amplitude and from the photon index Gamma. The first method is based on the anti-correlation between BH mass and X-ray variability amplitude. Using a sample of AGN with BH masses from reverberation mapping, we show that this method shows small intrinsic scatter. The second method is based on the correlation between Gamma and both the Eddington ratio L_{bol}/L_{Edd} and the bolometric correction L_{bol}/L_{2-10keV}.
Despite their factor of ~10^8 difference in black hole mass, several lines of evidence suggest possible similarities between black hole accretion flows in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and Galactic X-ray binaries. However, it is still unclear whether the geometry of the disk-corona system in X-ray binaries directly scale up to AGN, and whether this analogy still holds in different accretion states. We test this AGN/X-ray binary analogy, by comparing the observed correlations between the UV-to-X-ray spectral index (alpha_OX) and Eddington ratio in AGN to those predicted from observations of X-ra…
While X-ray emission from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is common, the detailed physics behind this emission is not well understood. This is in part because high quality broadband spectra are required to precisely derive fundamental parameters of X-ray emission such as the photon index, folding energy, and reflection coefficient. Here we present values of such parameters for 33 AGN observed as part of the 105 month Swift/BAT campaign and with coordinated archival XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations. We look for correlations between the various coronal parameters in addition to correlations betwe…
X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift $z=7.5$, although only limited to a few objects at $z>6.5$. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five $z>6.5$ quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional $z>6.5$ quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities ($L_{\rm bol}$), Eddington ratios ($λ_{\rm Edd}$), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) of these quasars using inf…

We calculate the structure of a standard accretion disk with corona surrounding a massive Kerr black hole in general relativistic frame, in which the corona is assumed to be heated by the reconnection of the strongly buoyant magnetic fields generated in the cold accretion disk. The emergent spectra of the accretion disk-corona systems are calculated by using the relativistic ray-tracing method. We propose a new method to calculate the emergent Comptonized spectra from the coronae. The spectra of the disk-corona systems with a modified $α$-magnetic stress show that both the hard X-ray spectral …
We have observed the luminous (L_x ~ 6x10^44 erg/s) radio-quiet quasar RBS 1124 (z=0.208) with Suzaku. We report the detection of a moderately broad iron (Fe) line and of a weak soft X-ray excess. The X-ray data are very well described by a simple model comprising a power law X-ray continuum plus its reflection off the accretion disc. If the inner disc radius we measure (<=3.8 gravitational radii) is identified with the innermost stable circular orbit of the black hole spacetime, we infer that the black hole powering RBS 1124 is rotating rapidly with spin a>= 0.6. The soft excess contribution …
In this paper, we explore the physics of the accretion and jet in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1). Specifically, we compile a sample composed of 16 nearby NLS1 with $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim 0.1$. We investigate the mutual correlation between their radio luminosity $L_{\rm R}$, X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm X}$, optical luminosity $L_{\rm 5100}$ and black hole mass $M_{\rm BH}$. By adopting partial correlation analysis: (1) we find a positive correlation between $L_{\rm X}$ and $M_{\rm BH}$, and (2) we find a weak positive correlation between $L_{\rm R}$ and $L_{5100}$. However, we don…
We discuss the results on the hot corona parameters of Active Galactic Nuclei that have been recently measured with NuSTAR. The values taken from the literature of a sample of nineteen bright Seyfert galaxies are analysed. Aims. The aim of this work is to look for correlations between coronal parameters, such as the photon index and cutoff energy (when a phenomenological model is adopted) or the optical depth and temperature (when a Comptonization model is used), with other parameters of the systems like the black hole mass or the Eddington ratio. We analysed the coronal parameters of the nine…
The X-ray Baldwin effect is the inverse correlation between the equivalent width (EW) of the narrow component of the iron Kalpha line and the X-ray luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGN). A similar trend has also been observed between Fe Kalpha EW and the Eddington ratio (lambda_Edd). Using Chandra/HEG results of Shu et al. (2010) and bolometric corrections we study the relation between EW and the lambda_Edd, and find that log EW = (-0.13+/-0.03)log(lambda_Edd) + 1.47. We explore the role of the known positive correlation between the photon index of the primary X-ray continuum (Gamma) and …
In this third paper in a series of three, we present a detailed study of the AGN broadband SED based on a nearby unobscured Type 1 AGN sample. We perform a systematic cross-correlation study of the following key parameters: $Γ_{2-10keV}$, $L_{2-10keV}$, $L_{bol}$, $L_{bol}/L_{Edd}$, $κ_{2-10keV}$, $κ_{5100A}$, FWHM$_{Hβ}$, M$_{BH}$, $α_{ox}$, $α_{X}$ and $α_{UV}$, and identify various strong correlations among these parameters. The principal component analysis (PCA) is performed on the correlation matrix of the above parameters, which shows that the three physical parameters, i.e. black hole m…

We estimate the relative contributions of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion disk, corona, and obscuring torus to the bolometric luminosity of Seyfert galaxies, using Spizter mid-infrared (MIR) observations of a complete sample of 68 nearby active galactic nuclei from the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray (HX) survey. This is the first HX-selected (above 15 keV) sample of AGNs with complementary high angular resolution, high signal to noise, MIR data. Correcting for the host galaxy contribution, we find a correlation between HX and MIR luminosities: L_MIR L_HX^(0.74+/-0.06). Assuming that …
