We show that a compact manifold admitting a Killing foliation with positive transverse curvature fibers over finite quotients of spheres or weighted complex projective spaces, provided that the singular foliation defined by the closures of the leaves has maximal dimension. This result is obtained by deforming the foliation into a closed one while maintaining transverse geometric properties, which allows us to apply results from the Riemannian geometry of orbifolds to the space of leaves. We also show that the basic Euler characteristic is preserved by such deformations. Using this fact we prove that a Riemannian foliation of a compact manifold with finite fundamental group and nonvanishing Euler characteristic is closed. As another application we obtain that, for a positively curved Killing foliation of a compact manifold, if the structural algebra has sufficiently large dimension then the basic Euler characteristic is positive.
We study transverse conformal Killing forms on foliations and prove a Gallot-Meyer theorem for foliations. Moreover, we show that on a foliation with $C$-positive normal curvature, if there is a closed basic 1-form $ϕ$ such that $Δ_Bϕ=qCϕ$, then the foliation is transversally isometric to the quotient of a $q$-sphere.
A smooth foliation is Riemannian when its leaves are locally equidistant. The closures of the leaves of a Riemannian foliation on a simply connected manifold, or more generally of a Killing foliation, are described by flows of transverse Killing vector fields. This offers significant technical advantages in the study of this class of foliations, which nonetheless includes other important classes, such as those given by the orbits of isometric Lie group actions. Aiming at a broad audience, in this survey we introduce Killing foliations from the very basics, starting with a brief revision of the…
On a closed, connected Riemannian manifold with a Kähler foliation of codimension $q=2m$, any transverse Killing $r\ (\geq 2)$-form is parallel (S. D. Jung and M. J. Jung [\ref{JJ2}], Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 49 (2012)). In this paper, we study transverse conformal Killing forms on Kähler foliations and prove that if the foliation is minimal, then for any transversal conformal Killing $r$-form $ϕ$ $(2\leq r \leq q-2)$, $Jϕ$ is parallel. Here $J$ is defined in Section 4.
We prove that the basic intersection cohomology $ {I H}^{^{*}}_{_{\bar{p}}}{(M/\mathcal{F})}, $ where $\mathcal{F}$ is the singular foliation determined by an isometric action of a Lie group $G$ on the compact manifold $M$, is finite dimensional.
We prove that the basic intersection cohomology $IH^*_{\overline{p}}(M / \mathcal{F})$, where $\mathcal{F}$ is the singular foliation determined by an isometric action of a Lie group $G$ on the compact manifold $M$, verifies the Poincaré Duality Property.
There is a natural way to deform a Killing foliation with non-closed leaves, due to Ghys and Haefliger--Salem, into a closed foliation, i.e., a foliation whose leaves are all closed. Certain transverse geometric and topological properties are preserved under these deformations, as previously shown by the authors. For instance, the basic Euler characteristic is invariant. In this article we show that the equivariant basic cohomology ring structure is preserved under these deformations, which in turn leads to a sufficient algebraic condition (namely, equivariant formality) for the Betti numbers …
Let $D$ be a set of smooth vector fields on the smooth manifold $M$.It is known that orbits of $D$ are submanifolds of M. Partition $F$ of M into orbits of $D$ is a singular foliation. In this paper we are studying geometry of foliation which is generated by orbits of a family of Killing vector fields. In the case $M=R^3$ it is obtained full geometrical classification of $F$. Throughout this paper the word "smooth" refers to a class $C^\infty$.
In this article, we study the L2-transverse conformal Killing forms on complete foliated Riemannian manifolds and prove some vanishing theorems. Also, we study the same problems on Kahler foliations with a complete bundle-like metric.
In this paper we introduce the concept of singular Finsler foliation, which generalizes the concepts of Finsler actions, Finsler submersions and (regular) Finsler foliations. We show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a singular Finsler foliation on a Randers manifold $(M,Z)$ with Zermelo data $(\mathtt{h},W),$ then $\mathcal{F}$ is a singular Riemannian foliation on the Riemannian manifold $(M,\mathtt{h} )$. As a direct consequence we infer that the regular leaves are equifocal submanifolds (a generalization of isoparametric submanifolds) when the wind $W$ is an infinitesimal homothety of $\mathtt{h}$ …
We study the Einstein-Dirac equation as well as the weak Killing equation on Riemannian spin manifolds with codimension one foliation. We prove that, for any manifold $M^n$ admitting real Killing spinors (resp. parallel spinors), there exist warped product metrics $\barη$ on $M^n \times {\mathbb R}$ such that $(M^n \times {\mathbb R}, \barη)$ admit Einstein spinors (resp. weak Killing spinors). To prove the result we split the Einstein-Dirac equation into evolution equations and constraints, by means of Cartan's frame formalism, and apply the local preservation property of constraints.
We generalize the notion of fixed point homogeneous isometric group actions to the context of singular Riemannian foliations. We find that in some cases, positively curved manifolds admitting these so-called point leaf maximal SRF's are diffeo/homeomorphic to compact rank one symmetric spaces. In all cases, manifolds admitting such foliations are cohomology CROSSes or finite quotients of them. Among non-simply connected manifolds, we find examples of such foliations which are non-homogeneous

We give a detailed account of the geometric correspondence between a smooth complex projective quadric hypersurface $\mathcal{Q}^n$ of dimension $n \geq 3$, and its twistor space $\mathbb{PT}$, defined to be the space of all linear subspaces of maximal dimension of $\mathcal{Q}^n$. Viewing complex Euclidean space $\mathbb{CE}^n$ as a dense open subset of $\mathcal{Q}^n$, we show how local foliations tangent to certain integrable holomorphic totally null distributions of maximal rank on $\mathbb{CE}^n$ can be constructed in terms of complex submanifolds of $\mathbb{PT}$. The construction is ill…
It is shown that in a class of maximal globally hyperbolic spacetimes admitting two local Killing vectors, the past (defined with respect to an appropriate time orientation) of any compact constant mean curvature hypersurface can be covered by a foliation of compact constant mean curvature hypersurfaces. Moreover, the mean curvature of the leaves of this foliation takes on arbitrarily negative values and so the initial singularity in these spacetimes is a crushing singularity. The simplest examples occur when the spatial topology is that of a torus, with the standard global Killing vectors, bu…
We show that $ϕ$-invariant submanifolds of metric contact pairs with orthogonal characteristic foliations make constant angles with the Reeb vector fields. Our main result is that for the normal case such submanifolds of dimension at least $2$ are all minimal. We prove that an odd-dimensional $ϕ$-invariant submanifold of a metric contact pair with orthogonal characteristic foliations inherits a contact form with an almost contact metric structure, and this induced structure is contact metric if and only if the submanifold is tangent to one Reeb vector field and orthogonal to the other one. Fur…
We introduce basic characteristic classes and numbers as new invariants for Riemannian foliations. If the ambient Riemannian manifold M is simply connected (or more generally if the foliation is a transversely orientable Killing foliation), if M is complete and if the space of leaf closures is compact, then the basic characteristic numbers are determined by the infinitesimal dynamical behavior of the foliation at the union of its closed leaves. In fact, they can be computed with an Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne-type integration formula for equivariant basic cohomology.
The basic cohomology of a Riemannian foliation on a complete manifold with all leaves closed is the cohomology of the leaf space. In this paper we introduce various methods to compute the basic cohomology in the presence of both closed and non-closed leaves in the simply-connected case (or more generally for Killing foliations): We show that the total basic Betti number of the union C of the closed leaves is smaller than or equal to the total basic Betti number of the foliated manifold, and we give sufficient conditions for equality. If there is a basic Morse-Bott function with critical set eq…
The generalized Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds asserts that any biharmonic submanifold of a non-positively curved manifold is minimal (see e.g., [CMO1], [MO], [BMO1], [BMO2], [BMO3], [Ba1], [Ba2], [Ou1], [Ou2], [IIU]). In this paper, we prove that this conjecture is false by constructing foliations of proper biharmonic hyperplanes in a 5-dimensional conformally flat space with negative sectional curvature. Many examples of proper biharmonic submanifolds of non-positively curved spaces are also given.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that each of the following conditions is equivalent to that the foliation ${\cal F}$ is riemannian: 1) the lifted foliation ${\cal F}^{r}$ on the $r$-transverse bundle $ν^{r}{\cal F}$ is riemannian for an $r\geq 1$; 2) the foliation ${\cal F}_{0}^{r}$ on a slashed $ν_{\ast}^{r}{\cal F}$ is riemannian and vertically exact for an $r\geq 1$; 3) there is a positively admissible transverse lagrangian on a $ν_{\ast}^{r}{\cal F}$, for an $r\geq 1$. Analogous results have been proved previously for normal jet vector bundles.
The purpose of this Note is to prove that each of the following conditions is equivalent to that of the foliation ${\cal F}$ is riemannian: 1) the lifted foliation ${\cal F}^{r}$ on the bundle of $r$-transverse jets is riemannian for an $r\geq 1$; 2) the foliation ${\cal F}_{0}^{r}$ on the slashed ${\cal J}_{0}^{r}$ is riemannian and vertically exact for an $r\geq 1 $; 3) there is a positively admissible transverse lagrangian on ${\cal J}%_{0}^{r}E$, the $r$-transverse slashed jet bundle of a foliated bundle $% E\rightarrow M$, for an $r\geq 1$.
In this paper, we introduce the flag-wise positively curved condition for Finsler spaces (the (FP) Condition), which means that in each tangent plane, we can find a flag pole in this plane such that the corresponding flag has positive flag curvature. Applying the Killing navigation technique, we find a list of compact coset spaces admitting non-negatively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics satisfying the (FP) Condition. Using a crucial technique we developed previously, we prove that most of these coset spaces cannot be endowed with positively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics. We also prove …
We consider compact hypersurfaces in an $(n+1)$-dimensional either Riemannian or Lorentzian space $N^{n+1}$ endowed with a conformal Killing vector field. For such hypersurfaces, we establish an integral formula which, especially in the simpler case when $N=M^n\times R$ is a product space, allows us to derive some interesting consequences in terms of the scalar curvature of the hypersurface. For instance, when $n=2$ and $M^2$ is either the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ or the real projective plane $\mathbb{RP}^2$, we characterize the slices of the trivial totally geodesic foliation $M^2\times\{t\}$ as…
It is shown that a self-dual neutral Einstein four-manifold of Petrov type III, admitting a two-dimensional null parallel distribution compatible with the orientation, cannot be compact or locally homogeneous, and its maximum possible degree of mobility is 3. Diaz-Ramos, Garcia-Rio and Vazquez-Lorenzo found a general coordinate form of such manifolds. The present paper also provides a modified version of that coordinate form, valid in a suitably defined generic case and, in a sense, "more canonical" than the usual formulation. Moreover, the local-isometry types of manifolds as above having the…
