The magnetic anisotropy and exchange coupling between spins localized at the positions of 3d transition metal atoms forming two-dimensional metal-organic coordination networks (MOCNs) grown on the Au(111) metal surface are studied. In particular, we consider MOCNs made of Ni or Mn metal centers linked by TCNQ (7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) organic ligands, which form rectangular networks with 1:1 stoichiometry. Based on the analysis of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) data taken at T= 2.5 K, we find that Ni atoms in the Ni-TCNQ MOCNs are coupled ferromagnetically and do not show any significant magnetic anisotropy, while Mn atoms in the Mn-TCNQ MOCNs are coupled antiferromagnetically and do show a weak magnetic anisotropy with in-planemagnetization. We explain these observations using both amodelHamiltonian based on mean-fieldWeiss theory and density functional theory calculations that include spin-orbit coupling. Our main conclusion is that the antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn spins and the in-plane magnetization of the Mn spins can be explained neglecting effects due to the presence of the Au(111) surface, while for Ni-TCNQ the metal surface plays a role in determining the absence of magnetic anisotropy in the system.
The spin-crossover in organometallic molecules constitutes one of the most promising routes towards the realization of molecular spintronic devices. In this article, we explore the hybridization-induced spin-crossover in metal-organic complexes. We propose a minimal many-body model that captures the essence of the spin-state switching in a generic parameter space, thus providing insight into the underlying physics. Combining the model with density functional theory (DFT), we then study the spin-crossover in isomeric structures of Ni-porphyrin (Ni-TPP). We show that metal-ligand charge transfer…
Metal-organic species can be designed to self-assemble in large-scale, atomically defined, supramolecular architectures. Hybrid quantum wells, where inorganic two-dimensional (2D) planes are separated by organic ligands, are a particular example. The ligands effectively provide an intralayer confinement for charge carriers resulting in a 2D electronic structure, even in multilayered assemblies. Air-stable metal organic chalcogenides hybrid quantum wells have recently been found to host tightly bound 2D excitons with strong optical anisotropy in a bulk matrix. Here, we investigate the excited c…
Coordination chemistry relies on harnessing active metal sites within organic matrices. Polynuclear complexes - consisting of organic ligands binding to clusters of several metal atoms are of particular interest, owing to their electronic/magnetic properties and potential for functional reactivity pathways. However, their synthesis remains challenging; only a limited number of geometries and configurations have been achieved. Here, we synthesise - via supramolecular chemistry on a noble metal surface - one-dimensional metal-organic nanostructures composed of terpyridine (tpy)-based molecules c…
It is textbookly regarded that phonons, i.e., an energy quantum of propagating lattice waves, are the main heat carriers in perfect crystals. As a result, in many crystals, e.g., bulk silicon, the temperature-dependent thermal conductivity shows the classical 1/T relationship because of the dominant Umklapp phonon-phonon scattering in the systems. However, the thermal conductivity of many crystalline metal-organic frameworks is very low and shows no, a weakly negative and even a weakly positive temperature dependence (glass-like thermal conductivity). It has been in debate whether the thermal …
The future of 2D flexible electronics relies on the preparation of conducting ultrathin films of materials with mechanical robustness and flexibility in a simple but controlled manner. In this respect, metal-organic compounds present advantages over inorganic laminar crystals owing to their structural, chemical and functional diversity. While most metal-organic compounds are usually prepared in bulk, recent work has shown that some of them are processable down to low dimensional forms. Here we report the one-pot preparation, carried out at the water-air interface, of ultrathin (down to 4 nm) f…
Achieving large-area uniform two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and controlling their electronic properties on inert surfaces is a big step towards future applications in electronic devices. Here we successfully fabricated a 2D monolayer Cu-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) MOF with long-range order on an epitaxial graphene surface. Its structural and electronic properties are studied by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) complemented by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. We demonstrate access to multiple molecular charge states in the…
Transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit rich phase diagrams dominated by the interplay of superconductivity and charge density waves, which often result in anomalies in the electric transport properties. Here, we employ the ionic gating technique to realize a tunable, non-volatile organic ion intercalation in bulk single crystals of molybdenum disulphide (MoS$_{2}$). We demonstrate that this gate-driven organic ion intercalation induces a strong electron doping in the system without changing the pristine $2H$ crystal symmetry and triggers the emergence of a re-entrant insulator-to-metal trans…
The organic spinterface describes the spin-polarized properties that develop, due to charge transfer, at the interface between a ferromagnetic metal (FM) and the molecules of an organic semiconductor. Yet, if the latter is also magnetic (e.g. molecular spin chains), the interfacial magnetic coupling can generate complexity within magnetotransport experiments. Also, assembling this interface may degrade the properties of its constituents (e.g. spin crossover or non-sublimable molecules). To circumvent these issues, one can separate the molecular and FM films using a less reactive nonmagnetic me…
The combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials into vertical heterostructures has emerged as a promising path to designer quantum materials with exotic properties. Here, we extend this concept from inorganic 2D materials to 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that offer additional flexibility in realizing designer heterostructures. We successfully fabricate a monolayer 2D Cu-dicyanoanthracene MOF on a 2D van der Waals NbSe$_2$ superconducting substrate. The structural and electronic properties of two different phases of the 2D MOF are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling micro…

Hybrid materials are crucial in photovoltaics where the overall efficiency of the heterostructure is closely related to the level of charge transfer at the interface. Here, using various metal / poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) heterostructure models, we reveal that the level of spontaneous charge transfer and electronic coupling at these interfaces depend on the conformational regularity of the organic polymer deposited on the metal substrate. Using ab-initio quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and heterodyne vibrational sum frequency generation (HD-VSFG) measur…
Metal organic frameworks are porous materials composed of metal ions or clusters coordinated by organic molecules. As a response to applied uniaxial pressure, molecules of straight shape in the framework start to buckle. Under sufficiently low temperatures, this buckling is of quantum nature, described by a superposition of degenerate buckling states. Buckling states of adjacent molecules couple in a transverse Ising type behavior. On the example of the metal organic framework topology MOF-5 we derive the phase diagram under applied strain, showing a normal, a parabuckling, and a ferrobuckling…
In this paper, we demonstrate the principle of operation of a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) capacitor based on undoped organic semiconductor. In spite of low charge concentration within the semiconductor, this device exhibits a capacitance variation with respect to applied gate voltage $V_g$, resembling the capacitance-voltage $C$-$V$ characteristics of a traditional doped semiconductor based MIS capacitor. A physics based model is developed to derive charge concentration, surface potential $ψ_s$ and the capacitance of organic MIS capacitor. The model is validated with TCAD simulation re…
Chains of Na atoms and dicyanovinyl-quinquethiophene (DCV5T-Me2) molecules with ionic bonds form a superlattice on Au(111). Through a detailed analysis of the interchain distances obtained from scanning tunneling microscopy images at various molecular coverages, we found that the chain arrangement substantially deviates from a random distribution of noninteracting chains. Instead, the distribution of chain spacings provides evidence for the existence of an interchain long-range repulsive potential. Furthermore, the experimental results can be modeled by a repulsive potential with a 1/d distanc…
