We present the results from a $\sim500$ ks Chandra observation of the $z=6.31$ QSO SDSS J1030+0524. This is the deepest X-ray observation to date of a $z\sim6$ QSO. The QSO is detected with a total of 125 net counts in the full ($0.5-7$ keV) band and its spectrum can be modeled by a single power-law model with photon index of $Γ= 1.81 \pm 0.18$ and full band flux of $f=3.95\times 10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. When compared with the data obtained by XMM-Newton in 2003, our Chandra observation in 2017 shows a harder ($ΔΓ\approx -0.6$) spectrum and a 2.5 times fainter flux. Such a variation, in a timespan of $\sim2$ yrs rest-frame, is unexpected for such a luminous QSO powered by a $> 10^9 \: M_{\odot}$ black hole. The observed source hardening and weakening could be related to an intrinsic variation in the accretion rate. However, the limited photon statistics does not allow us to discriminate between an intrinsic luminosity and spectral change, and an absorption event produced by an intervening gas cloud along the line of sight. We also report the discovery of diffuse X-ray emission that extends for 30"x20" southward the QSO with a signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim$6, hardness ratio of $HR=0.03_{-0.25}^{+0.20}$, and soft band flux of $f_{0.5-2 \: keV}= 1.1_{-0.3}^{+0.3} \times 10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, that is not associated to a group or cluster of galaxies. We discuss two possible explanations for the extended emission, which may be either associated with the radio lobe of a nearby, foreground radio galaxy (at $z \approx 1-2$), or ascribed to the feedback from the QSO itself acting on its surrounding environment, as proposed by simulations of early black hole formation.
The variability of the broad absorption lines is investigated for a broad absorption line (BAL) QSO, SDSS J022844.09+000217.0 (z = 2.719), with 18 SDSS/BOSS spectra covering 4128 days in the observed frame. With the ratio of the rms spectrum to the mean spectrum, the relative flux change of the BAL-trough is larger than that of the emission lines and the continuum. Fitting the power-law continuum and the emission line profiles of \civ $λ$1549 and \siiv$λ$1399, we calculate the equivalent width (EW) for different epochs, as well as the continuum luminosity and the spectral index. It is found th…
We report on the discovery of broad Balmer absorption lines variability in the QSO SDSS J125942.80+121312.6, based on the optical and near-infrared spectra taken from the SDSS-I, SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and TripleSpec observations over a timescale of 5.8 years in the QSO's rest-frame. The blueshifted absorption profile of H$β$ shows a variation of more than 5$σ$ at a high velocity portion ($>3000\ \mathrm{km\ s}^{-1}$) of the trough. We perform a detailed analysis for the physical conditions of the absorber using Balmer lines as well as metastable He I and opti…
In this manuscript, we report a new changing-look QSO (CLQSO) SDSS J2241 at $z=0.059$. Based on the multi-epoch SDSS spectra from 2011 to 2017, the flux ratio of broad H$α$ to broad H$β$ has been changed from 7\ in 2011 to 2.7\ in 2017, leading SDSS J2241 with spectral index $α_λ\sim-5.21\pm0.02$ ($λ< 4000$Å) in 2017 to be so-far the bluest CLQSO. Based on the SDSS spectrum in 2011, the host galaxy contributions with stellar velocity dispersion $\sim86{\rm km/s}$ can be well determined, leading to the M-sigma relation expected central BH mass $\sim3\times10^6{\rm M_\odot}$. However, through pr…
We present a sample of 12 Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) potentially acting as strong gravitational lenses on background Emission Line Galaxies (ELG) or Lyman-$α$ Emitters (LAEs) selected selected through a systematic search of the 297301 QSOs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-III Data Release 12. Candidates are identified by looking for compound spectra, where emission lines at a redshift larger than that of the quasar can be identified in the residuals after a QSO spectral template is subtracted from the observed spectra. The narrow diameter of BOSS fibers (2") then ensures that the objec…
We present new results of CO(1-0) spectroscopic observations of 4 SDSS type 2 quasars (QSO2) at z$\sim$0.3, observed with the 30m IRAM telescope. The QSO2 have infrared luminosities in the ULIRG (UltraLuminous Infrared Galaxies) regime. We confirm the CO(1-0) detection in one of our 4 QSO2, SDSS J1543-00, with $L'_{CO}$ and $M_{H_2}$ (1.2$\pm$0.2) $\times$10$^{10}$ K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$ and (9.4$\pm$1.4)$\times$10$^9$ M$_{\odot}$, respectively. The CO(1-0) line has $FWHM=$575$\pm$102 km s$^{-1}$. No CO(1-0) emission is detected in SDSS J0903+02, SDSS J1337-01, SDSS J1520-01 above 3 sigma, yield…
We obtained optical spectroscopy of close (< 80 kpc) companion objects of a sample of 12 low redshift quasars (z < 0.3 ) selected from the SDSS Stripe82 area and that are in the subsample of 52 QSOs for which both multicolor host galaxies properties and galaxy environment was recently investigated in detail. We found that for 8 out of 12 sources the companion galaxy is associated to the QSO having a difference of radial velocity that is less than 400 km/s. Many of these associated companions exhibit [OII] $λ$3727 Å~ emission lines suggestive of episodes of (recent) star formation possibly indu…
We present optical spectroscopy of the close companions of 22 low redshift (z<0.5) quasars (QSO) selected from a larger sample of QSO in the SDSS Stripe82 region for which both the host galaxy and the large scale environments have been investigated in our previous work. The new observations extend the number of QSO studied in our previous paper on close companion galaxies of 12 quasars. Our analysis here covers all 34 quasars from both this work and the previously published paper. We find that half of them (15 QSO; $\sim$44%) have at least one associated galaxy. Many (12 galaxies; $\sim$67%) o…
We explore indirect methods to detect Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in gas-rich, absorption-selected galaxies at high redshift. We look at the optical VLT/X-shooter observations of an intervening, extremely strong damped Lyman-alpha absorber (or ESDLA, with log(N(HI))>~21.7)) towards QSO SDSS J1143+1420 at redshift, z(ESDLA)=2.323. Literature studies have shown that this ESDLA contains signatures of dust and diffuse molecular hydrogen and it was specifically chosen for our study due to its close spatial proximity (impact parameter, rho=0.6+/-0.3 kpc) with its associated galaxy. There…
Radiative efficiencies of QSOs and its distribution encode rich information on the evolution of both masses and spins of massive black holes (MBHs) across cosmic time. In this paper, we develop a maximum likelihood method to statistically extract the intrinsic relation between radiative efficiency ($ε$) and mass ($M_{\bullet}$) of QSOs from their distribution on the luminosity-(empirically estimated virial) mass plane. By using mock samples, we find that strong constraint can be put on the $ε-M_{\bullet}$ relation at redshift $z\lesssim 0.4$ from uniform QSO samples similar to those in Sloan D…
Using high resolution VLT spectra, we study the multi-component outflow systems of two quasars exhibiting intrinsic Fe II absorption (QSO 2359-1241 and SDSS J0318-0600). From the extracted ionic column densities and using photoionization modeling we determine the gas density, total column density, and ionization parameter for several of the components. For each object the largest column density component is also the densest, and all other components have densities of roughly 1/4 of that of the main component. We demonstrate that all the absorbers lie roughly at the same distance from the sourc…
We present integral field spectrograph (IFS) with laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS-AO) observations of z=2 quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) designed to resolve extended nebular line emission from the host galaxy. Our data was obtained with W. M. Keck and Gemini-North Observatories using OSIRIS and NIFS coupled with the LGS-AO systems. We have conducted a pilot survey of five QSOs, three observed with NIFS+AO and two observed with OSIRIS+AO at an average redshift of z=2.15. We demonstrate that the combination of AO and IFS provides the necessary spatial and spectral resolutions required to sep…
Galaxy clusters in the local universe descend from high-redshift overdense regions known as protoclusters. The large gas reservoirs and high rate of galaxy interaction in protoclusters are expected to trigger star-formation activity and luminous SMBH accretion in the host galaxies. We investigated the AGN content of a gas-rich and starbursting protocluster at $z=4$, known as the Distant Red Core (DRC). We observed with Chandra (139 ks) the 13 identified members of the structure, and searched for luminous and possibly obscured AGN among them. We also tested whether a hidden AGN can power the $L…
Broad absorption lines (BALs) in the spectra of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) originate from outflowing winds along our line of sight; winds are thought to originate from the inner regions of the QSO accretion disk, close to the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Winds likely play a role in galaxy evolution and aid the accretion mechanism onto the SMBH. BAL equivalent widths can change on typical timescales from months to years; such variability is generally attributed to changes in the covering factor and/or in the ionization level of the gas. We investigate BAL variability, focusing on B…
We investigated the presence of galaxy overdensities around four $z\sim6$ QSOs, namely SDSS J1030+0524 (z = 6.28), SDSS J1148+5251 (z = 6.41), SDSS J1048+4637 (z = 6.20) and SDSS J1411+1217 (z = 5.95), through deep $r$-, $i$- and $z$- band imaging obtained with the wide-field ($\sim23'\times25'$) Large Binocular Camera (LBC) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). We adopted color-color selections within the $i-z$ vs $r-z$ plane to identify samples of $i$-band dropouts at the QSO redshift and measure their relative abundance and spatial distribution in the four LBC fields, each covering $\sim8…
We present multi object optical spectroscopy of the galaxies in the environment of 12 low-redshift (z < 0.5) quasars and of 11 inactive massive galaxies chosen to match the properties of the quasar host galaxies to probe physical association and possible events of recent star formation. The quasars are selected from a sample of QSOs in the SDSS Stripe82 region for which both the host galaxy and the large scale environments were previously investigated. The new observations complement those reported in our previous works on close companion galaxies of nearby quasars. For the whole dataset we fi…
Machine learning techniques, specifically the k-nearest neighbour algorithm applied to optical band colours, have had some success in predicting photometric redshifts of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs): Although the mean of differences between the spectroscopic and photometric redshifts is close to zero, the distribution of these differences remains wide and distinctly non-Gaussian. As per our previous empirical estimate of photometric redshifts, we find that the predictions can be significantly improved by adding colours from other wavebands, namely the near-infrared and ultraviolet. Self-testin…
The discovery of hundreds of QSOs in the first Gyr of the Universe powered by already grown SMBHs challenges our knowledge of SMBH formation. In particular, investigations of $z>6$ QSOs presenting notable properties can provide unique information on the physics of fast SMBH growth in the early universe. We present the results of follow-up observations of the $z=6.515$ radio-quiet QSO PSO167-13, which is interacting with a close companion galaxy. The PSO167-13 system has been recently proposed to host the first heavily obscured X-ray source at high redshift. We observed PSO167-13 with Chandra/A…
We present a detailed analysis of the Astrophysical Research Consortium 3.5 m telescope spectrum of QSO SDSS J0838+2955. The object shows three broad absorption line (BAL) systems at 22,000, 13,000, and 4900 km s^-1 blueshifted from the systemic redshift of z=2.043. Of particular interest is the lowest velocity system that displays absorption from low-ionization species such as Mg II, Al II, Si II, Si II*, Fe II and Fe II*. Accurate column densities were measured for all transitions in this lowest velocity BAL using an inhomogeneous absorber model. The ratio of column densities of Si II* and F…
In this work, we present a high spatial resolution study of a fossil cluster, SDSS J0150-1005 ($z \simeq 0.364$), based on the imaging spectroscopic analysis of \chandra\ observation. The \chandra\ X-ray image shows a relax and symmetric morphology, which indicates SDSS J0150-1005 is a well-developed galaxy cluster with no sign of recent merger. Its global gas temperature is 5.73 $\pm$ 0.80 keV, and the virial mass is 6.23 $\pm$ 1.34 $\times 10^{14} $ M$_{\odot}$ according to the isothermal model. Compared with polytropic temperature model, the mass calculated based on isothermal model overest…
While theoretical arguments predict that most of the early growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) happened during heavily obscured phases of accretion, current methods used for selecting $z>6$ quasars (QSOs) are strongly biased against obscured QSOs, thus considerably limiting our understanding of accreting SMBHs during the first Gyr of the Universe from an observational point of view. We report the $Chandra$ discovery of the first heavily obscured QSO candidate in the early universe, hosted by a close ($\approx5$ kpc) galaxy pair at $z=6.515$. One of the members is an optically classified…
We report exploratory \chandra\ observation of the ultraluminous quasar SDSS J010013.02+280225.8 at redshift 6.30. The quasar is clearly detected by \chandra\ with a possible component of extended emission. The rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity is 9.0$^{+9.1}_{-4.5}$ $\times$ 10$^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ with inferred photon index of $Γ$ = 3.03$^{+0.78}_{-0.70}$. This quasar is X-ray bright, with inferred X-ray-to-optical flux ratio \aox\ $=-1.22^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$, higher than the values found in other quasars of comparable ultraviolet luminosity. The properties inferred from this exploratory observatio…

We present ALMA observations of the CO(6-5) and [CII] emission lines and the sub-millimeter continuum of the $z\sim6$ quasi-stellar object (QSO) SDSS J231038.88+185519.7. Compared to previous studies, we have analyzed a synthetic beam that is ten times smaller in angular size, we have achieved ten times better sensitivity in the CO(6-5) line, and two and half times better sensitivity in the [CII] line, enabling us to resolve the molecular gas emission. We obtain a size of the dense molecular gas of $2.9\pm0.5$ kpc, and of $1.4\pm0.2$ kpc for the 91.5 GHz dust continuum. By assuming that CO(6-5…
We report on the spectroscopic confirmation of a large scale structure around the luminous, z=6.31 QSO SDSS~J1030+0524, that is powered by a billion solar mass black hole. The structure is populated by at least six members, four Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and two Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs). The four LBGs have been identified among a sample of 21 i-band dropouts with z{AB}<25.5 selected up to projected separations of 5 physical Mpc (15 arcmin) from the QSO. Their redshifts have been determined through up to 8hr-long multi-object spectroscopic observations at 8-10m class telescopes. The two LA…
We present the X-ray source catalog for the 479 ks Chandra exposure of the SDSS J1030+0524 field, that is centered on a region that shows the best evidence to date of an overdensity around a z > 6 quasar, and also includes a galaxy overdensity around a Compton-thick Fanaroff-Riley type II radio galaxy at z = 1.7. Using wavdetect for initial source detection and ACIS Extract for source photometry and significance assessment, we create preliminary catalogs of sources that are detected in the full, soft, and hard bands, respectively. We produce X-ray simulations that mirror our Chandra observatio…

We apply a recently developed method for classifying broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs) to the latest QSO catalogue constructed from Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our new hybrid classification scheme combines the power of simple metrics, supervised neural networks and visual inspection. In our view the resulting BALQSO catalogue is both more complete and more robust than all previous BALQSO catalogues, containing 3552 sources selected from a parent sample of 28,421 QSOs in the redshift range 1.7<z<4.2. This equates to a raw BALQSO fraction of 12.5%. In the process of con…
We present a photometrical and morphological study of the properties of low redshift (z < 0.5) quasars based on a large and homogeneous dataset of objects derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (DR7). This study over number by a factor about 5 any other previous study of QSO host galaxies at low redshift undertaken either on ground or on space surveys. We used about 400 quasars that were imaged in the SDSS Stripe82 that is up to 2 mag deeper than standard Sloan images. For these quasars we undertake a study of the host galaxies and of their environments. In this paper we report the results …
We present the first results from BAYMAX (Bayesian AnalYsis of Multiple AGN in X-rays), a tool that uses a Bayesian framework to quantitatively evaluate whether a given Chandra observation is more likely a single or dual point source. Although the most robust method of determining the presence of dual AGNs is to use X-ray observations, only sources that are widely separated relative to the instrument PSF are easy to identify. It becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish dual AGNs from single AGNs when the separation is on the order of Chandra's angular resolution (<1''). Using likelihood m…
