Upon revisiting the Hamiltonian structure of classical wavefunctions in Koopman-von Neumann theory, this paper addresses the long-standing problem of formulating a dynamical theory of classical-quantum coupling. The proposed model not only describes the influence of a classical system onto a quantum one, but also the reverse effect -- the quantum backreaction. These interactions are described by a new Hamiltonian wave equation overcoming shortcomings of currently employed models. For example, the density matrix of the quantum subsystem is always positive-definite. While the Liouville density of the classical subsystem is generally allowed to be unsigned, its sign is shown to be preserved in time for a specific infinite family of hybrid classical-quantum systems. The proposed description is illustrated and compared with previous theories using the exactly solvable model of a degenerate two-level quantum system coupled to a classical harmonic oscillator.
Based on Koopman's theory of classical wavefunctions in phase space, we present the Koopman-van Hove (KvH) formulation of classical mechanics as well as some of its properties. In particular, we show how the associated classical Liouville density arises as a momentum map associated to the unitary action of strict contact transformations on classical wavefunctions. Upon applying the Madelung transform from quantum hydrodynamics in the new context, we show how the Koopman wavefunction picture is insufficient to reproduce arbitrary classical distributions. However, this problem is entirely overco…
Motivated by recent discussions on the possible role of quantum computation in plasma simulations, here we present different approaches to Koopman's Hilbert-space formulation of classical mechanics in the context of Vlasov-Maxwell kinetic theory. The celebrated Koopman-von Neumann construction is provided with two different Hamiltonian structures: one is canonical and recovers the usual Clebsch representation of the Vlasov density, the other is noncanonical and appears to overcome certain issues emerging in the canonical formalism. Furthermore, the canonical structure is restored for a variant…
We deal with the reversible dynamics of coupled quantum and classical systems. Based on a recent proposal by the authors, we exploit the theory of hybrid quantum-classical wavefunctions to devise a closure model for the coupled dynamics in which both the quantum density matrix and the classical Liouville distribution retain their initial positive sign. In this way, the evolution allows identifying a classical and a quantum state in interaction at all times, thereby addressing a series of stringent consistency requirements. After combining Koopman's Hilbert-space method in classical mechanics w…
Based on the Koopman-van Hove (KvH) formulation of classical mechanics introduced in Part I, we formulate a Hamiltonian model for hybrid quantum-classical systems. This is obtained by writing the KvH wave equation for two classical particles and applying canonical quantization to one of them. We illustrate several geometric properties of the model regarding the associated quantum, classical, and hybrid densities. After presenting the quantum-classical Madelung transform, the joint quantum-classical distribution is shown to arise as a momentum map for a unitary action naturally induced from the…
A gauge-invariant wave equation for the dynamics of hybrid quantum-classical systems is formulated by combining the variational setting of Lagrangian paths in continuum theories with Koopman wavefunctions in classical mechanics. We identify gauge transformations with unobservable phase factors in the classical phase-space and we introduce gauge invariance in the variational principle underlying a hybrid wave equation previously proposed by the authors. While the original construction ensures a positive-definite quantum density matrix, the present model also guarantees the same property for the…
The original intent of the Koopman-von Neumann formalism was to put classical and quantum mechanics on the same footing by introducing an operator formalism into classical mechanics. Here we pursue their path the opposite way and examine what transfer operators can say about quantum mechanical evolution. To that end, we introduce a physically motivated scalar wavefunction formalism for a velocity field on a 4-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold, and obtain an evolution equation for the associated wavefunction, a generator for an associated weighted transfer operator. The generator of the sc…
A recent formalism capturing the classical-quantum coupling in a Hamiltonian theory for probabilistic classical mechanics has been proposed: the Koopman-van Hove formulation. The aims of this report are twofolds. First, we rigourously expose this new framework for a non-expert audience and present a construction for the operatorial analogues to the classical angular and linear momentum operators. We then investigate the group actions generating their average as momentum maps as well as their associated dynamics. Finally, we illustrate the theory by deriving the Koopman-van Hove formulation to …
We study the properties of the quasienergy states of a quantum system driven by a classical dynamical system. The quasienergies are defined in a same manner as in light-matter interaction but where the Floquet approach is generalized by the use of the Koopman approach of dynamical systems. We show how the properties of the classical flow (fixed and cyclic points, ergodicity, chaos) influence the driven quantum system. This approach of the Schrödinger-Koopman quasienergies can be applied to quantum control, quantum information in presence of noises, and dynamics of mixed classical-quantum syste…
Quantum computers can be used to simulate nonlinear non-Hamiltonian classical dynamics on phase space by using the generalized Koopman-von Neumann formulation of classical mechanics. The Koopman-von Neumann formulation implies that the conservation of the probability distribution function on phase space, as expressed by the Liouville equation, can be recast as an equivalent Schrödinger equation on Hilbert space with a Hermitian Hamiltonian operator and a unitary propagator. This Schrödinger equation is linear in the momenta because it derives from a constrained Hamiltonian system with twice th…
We extend the concept of implementability of semigroups of evolution operators associated with dynamical systems to quantum case. We show that such an extension can be properly formulated in terms of Jordan morphisms and isometries on non-commutative $L^p$ spaces. We focus our attention on a non-commutative analog of the Banach-Lamperti theorem.
Using Koopman's approach to classical dynamical systems we show that the classical damping may be interpreted as appearance of resonant states of the corresponding Koopman's operator. It turns out that simple classical damped systems give rise to discrete complex spectra. Therefore, the corresponding generalized eigenvectors may be interpreted as classical resonant states.

This paper presents the momentum map structures which emerge in the dynamics of mixed states. Both quantum and classical mechanics are shown to possess analogous momentum map pairs. In the quantum setting, the right leg of the pair identifies the Berry curvature, while its left leg is shown to lead to more general realizations of the density operator which have recently appeared in quantum molecular dynamics. Finally, the paper shows how alternative representations of both the density matrix and the classical density are equivariant momentum maps generating new Clebsch representations for both…
A well-known feature of quantum mechanics is the secure exchange of secret bit strings which can then be used as keys to encrypt messages transmitted over any classical communication channel. It is demonstrated that this quantum key distribution allows a much more general and abstract access than commonly thought. The results include some generalizations for the Hilbert space version of quantum key distribution, but base upon a general non-classical extension of conditional probability. A special state-independent conditional probability is identified as origin of the superior security of quant…

In the same way as the quantum no-cloning theorem and quantum key distribution in two preceding papers, entanglement-assisted quantum teleportation and Grover's search algorithm are generalized by transferring them to an abstract setting, including usual quantum mechanics as a special case. This again shows that a much more general and abstract access to these quantum mechanical features is possible than commonly thought. A non-classical extension of conditional probability and, particularly, a very special type of state-independent conditional probability are used instead of Hilbert spaces an…
We derive semiclassical approximations for wavefunctions, Green's functions and expectation values for classically chaotic quantum systems. Our method consists of applying singular and regular perturbations to quantum Hamiltonians. The wavefunctions, Green's functions and expectation values of the unperturbed Hamiltonian are expressed in terms of the spectral determinant of the perturbed Hamiltonian. Semiclassical resummation methods for spectral determinants are applied and yield approximations in terms of a finite number of classical trajectories. The final formulas have a simple form. In co…
(abbreviated) We study quantized solutions of WdW equation describing a closed FRW universe with a $Λ$ term and a set of massless scalar fields. We show that when $Λ\ll 1$ in the natural units and the standard $in$-vacuum state is considered, either wavefunction of the universe, $Ψ$, or its derivative with respect to the scale factor, $a$, behave as random quasi-classical fields at sufficiently large values of $a$, when $1 \ll a \ll e^{2\over 3Λ}$ or $a \gg e^{2\over 3Λ}$, respectively. Statistical r.m.s value of the wavefunction is proportional to the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for a closed …
We study the classical limit of the ELPR/FK spin foam models by analyzing the large-distance asymptotics of the corresponding graviton propagators. This is done by examining the large-spin asymptotics of the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction which is peaked around a classical flat spatial geometry. By using the stationary phase method we determine the wavefunction asymptotics. The obtained asymptotics does not give the desired large-distance asymptotics for the corresponding graviton propagator. However, we show that the ELPR/FK vertex amplitude can be redefined such that the corresponding Hartle-Ha…
We analyse the 2-dimensional Euler point vortices dynamics in the Koopman-Von Neumann approach. Classical results provide well-posedness of this dynamics involving singular interactions for a finite number of vortices, on a full-measure set with respect to the volume measure $dx^N$ on the phase space, which is preserved by the measurable flow thanks to the Hamiltonian nature of the system. We identify a core for the generator of the one-parameter group of Koopman-Von Neumann unitaries on $L^2(dx^N)$ associated to said flow, the core being made of observables smooth outside a suitable set on wh…
We give a formulation of classical mechanics in the language of operators acting on a Hilbert space. The formulation given comes from a unitary irreducible representation of the Galilei group that is compatible with the basic postulates of classical mechanics, particularly the absence of an uncertainty principle between the position and momentum of a particle. It is shown that the theory exposed in the article contains the Koopman-von Neumann formalism of classical mechanics as a particular case.
