Analogue spacetimes can be used to probe and study physically interesting spacetime geometries by constructing, either theoretically or experimentally, some notion of an effective Lorentzian metric $[g_\mathrm{eff}(g,V,\,Ξ)]_{ab}$. These effective metrics generically depend on some physical background metric $g_{ab}$, often flat Minkowski space $η_{ab}$, some "medium" with 4-velocity $V^a$, and possibly some additional background fields $Ξ$. Electromagnetic analogue models date back to the 1920s, acoustic analogue models to the 1980s, and BEC-based analogues to the 1990s. The acoustic analogue models have perhaps the most rigorous mathematical formulation, and these acoustic analogue models really work best in the absence of vorticity, if the medium has an irrotational flow. This makes it difficult to model rotating astrophysical spacetimes, spacetimes with non-zero angular momentum, and in the current article we explore the extent to which one might hope to be able to model astrophysical spacetimes with angular momentum, (thereby implying vorticity in the 4-velocity of the medium).
The necessity of a newly proposed (PRD 70 (2004) 64004) non-Riemannian acoustic spacetime structure called acoustic torsion of sound wave equation in fluids with vorticity are discussed. It is shown that this structure, although not always necessary is present in fluids with vorticity even when the perturbation is rotational. This can be done by solving the Bergliaffa et al (Physica D (2004)) gauge invariant equations for sound, superposed to a general background flow, needs to support a non-Riemannian acoustic geometry in effective spacetime. Bergliaffa et al have previously shown that a Riem…
In this paper we consider conformally flat perturbations on the Friedmann Lemaitre Robertson Walker (FLRW) spacetime containing a general matter field. Working with the linearised field equations, we unearth some important geometrical properties of matter shear and vorticity and how they interact with the thermodynamical quantities in the absence of any free gravity powered by the Weyl curvature. As there are hardly any physically realistic rotating exact conformally flat solutions in general relativity, these covariant and gauge invariant results bring out transparently the role of vorticity …
In the analogue gravity framework, the acoustic disturbances in a moving fluid can be described by an equation of motion identical to a relativistic scalar massless field propagating in a curved spacetime. This description is possible only when the fluid under consideration is barotropic, inviscid and irrotational. In this case, the propagation of the perturbations is governed by an acoustic metric which depends algebrically on the local speed of sound, density and the background flow velocity, the latter assumed to be vorticity free. In this work we provide an straightforward extension in ord…
The physical meaning of the vorticity of the matter content in Gödel spacetime is analyzed in some detail. As we shall see, unlike the situation in general stationnary axially symmetric spacetimes (Lewis--Papapetrou), the vorticity in Gödel spacetime is not associated to a circular flow of superenergy on the plane orthogonal to the vorticity vector. This fact might be at the origin of the strange behaviour of gyroscopes in such spacetime. The analysis emerging from the tilted version of Gödel spacetime supports further this point of view. In order to tell apart the two situations (with and wit…
Using the generally covariant magnetofluid formalism for a hot plasma, a new spacetime curvature driven mechanism for generating seed vorticity/magnetic field is presented. The ``battery'' owes its origin to the interaction between gravity and the inhomogeneous plasma thermodynamics. The general relativistic drive is evaluated for two simple cases: seed formation in a simplified model of a hot plasma accreting in stable orbits around a Schwarzschild black hole, and for particles in free fall near the horizon. Some astrophysical applications are suggested.
The electric and the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor, as well as the invariants obtained from them, are calculated for the Bondi vacuum metric. One of the invariants vanishes identically and the other only exhibits contributions from terms of the Weyl tensor containing the static part of the field. It is shown that the necessary and sufficient condition for the spacetime to be purely electric is that such spacetime be static. It is also shown that the vanishing of the electric part implies Minkowski spacetime. Unlike the electric part, the magnetic part does not contain contributions from the…
We obtain expressions for the shear and the vorticity tensors of perfect-fluid spacetimes, in terms of the divergence of the Weyl tensor. For such spacetimes, we prove that if the gradient of the energy density is parallel to the velocity, then either the expansion rate is zero, or the vorticity vanishes. This statement recalls the "shear-free conjecture" for a perfect barotropic fluid: vanishing shear implies either vanishing expansion rate or vanishing vorticity. Finally, we give a new condition for a perfect fluid to be a Generalized Robinson-Walker spacetime.
We analyze the properties of the tilted Szekeres spacetime, i.e. the version of such spacetime as seen by a congruence of observers with respect to which the fluid is moving. The imperfect fluid and the kinematical variables associated to the four-velocity of the fluid assigned by tilted observers are studied in detail. As it happens for the case of the Lemaitre--Tolman--Bondi spacetime, the fluid evolves nonreversibly (with nonvanishing entropy production) and is nongeodesic. However unlike that later case, the tilted observer detects vorticity in the congruence of the fluid world lines. Also…
We present a general study about the relation between the vorticity tensor and the Poynting vector of the electromagnetic field for axially symmetric stationary electrovacuum metrics. The obtained expressions allow to understand the role of the Poynting vector in the dragging of inertial frames. The particular case of the rotating massive charged magnetic dipole is analyzed in detail. In addition, the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor are calculated and the link between the later and the vorticity is established. Then we show that, in the vacuum case, the necessary and sufficient …
We present here a general relativistic mechanism for accelerated cosmic expansion and the Hubble's constant. It is shown that spacetime vorticity coupled to the magnetic field density in galaxies causes the galaxies to recede from one another at a rate equal to the Hubble's constant. We therefore predict an oscillatory universe, with zero curvature, without assuming violation of Newtonian gravity at large distances or invoking dark energy/dark matter hypotheses. The value of the Hubble's constant, along with the scale of expansion, as well as the high isotropy of CMB radiation are deduced from…
PDM Klein-Gordon particles in Som-Raychaudhuri cosmic string spacetime with space-like dislocation and a non-uniform magnetic field: spacetime associated degeneracies, vorticity-energy, and charge-energy correlations
We dispose of some objections raised by Manko et al. (gr-qc/0604091) on a recently published paper on the role of Poynting vector in the ocurrence of vorticity in electrovaccum spacetimes (2006, Class. Quantum Grav. 23, 2395)
Why are "analogue spacetimes'' interesting? For the purposes of this workshop the answer is simple: Analogue spacetimes provide one with physically well-defined and physically well-understood concrete models of many of the phenomena that seem to be part of the yet incomplete theory of "quantum gravity'', or more accessibly, "quantum gravity phenomenology''. Indeed "analogue spacetimes'' provide one with concrete models of "emergence'' (whereby the effective low-energy theory can be radically different from the high-energy microphysics). They also provide many concrete and controlled models of …
The vorticity of world lines of observers associated to the rotation of a massive body was reported by Lense and Thirring more than a century ago. In their example the frame dragging effect induced by the vorticity, is directly (explicitly) related to the rotation of the source. However in many other cases it is not so, and the origin of vorticity remains obscure and difficult to identify. Accordingly, in order to unravel this issue, and looking for the ultimate origin of vorticity associated to frame dragging, we analyze in this manuscript very different scenarios where frame dragging effect …
Analogue spacetimes are powerful models for probing the fundamental physical aspects of geometry - while one is most typically interested in ultimately reproducing the pseudo-Riemannian geometries of interest in general relativity and cosmology, analogue models can also provide useful physical probes of more general geometries such as pseudo-Finsler spacetimes. In this chapter we shall see how a 2-component Bose-Einstein condensate can be used to model a specific class of pseudo-Finsler geometries, and after suitable tuning of parameters, both bi-metric pseudo-Riemannian geometries and standar…
We develop an analytical formalism for studying optical analogues of spherically symmetric black-hole spacetimes. We demonstrate the exact similarity between the electromagnetic wave equations in an inhomogeneous medium in flat spacetime and those in a general-relativistic curved spacetime respectively. The permittivity and the permeability of an inhomogeneous optical medium act as metric components of the analogue spacetime. Manifest properties of black holes like curved light trajectories follow directly from our formalism. Other black-hole phenomena like quasinormal modes can also be studie…
We consider superfluidity and quantum vorticity in rotating spacetimes. The system is described by a complex scalar satisfying a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. Rotation terms are identified and found to lead to the transfer of angular momentum of the spacetime to the scalar field. The scalar field responds by rotating, physically behaving as a superfluid, through the creation of quantized vortices. We demonstrate the vortex nucleation through numerical simulation.
Using the quasi-Maxwell form of the vacuum Einstein equations and demanding the presence of a cylindrically symmetric radial gravomagnetic field, we find the solution to the Einstein equations which represents the gravity field of a line gravomagnetic monopole. We show that this is the generalization of the Levi-Civita's cylindrically symmetric static spacetime, in the same way that the NUT metric is the empty space generalization of the Schwarzschild metric. Some of the features of this metric as well as its relation to other metrics are discussed.
We extend the "analogue spacetime" programme by investigating a condensed-matter system that is in principle capable of simulating the massive Klein--Gordon equation in curved spacetime. Since many elementary particles have mass, this is an essential step in building realistic analogue models, and a first step towards simulating quantum gravity phenomenology. Specifically, we consider the class of two-component BECs subject to laser-induced transitions between the components. This system exhibits a complicated spectrum of normal mode excitations, which can be viewed as two interacting phonon m…
The analogy between vorticity and magnetic fields has been a subject of interest to researchers for a considerable period of time, mainly because of the structural similarities between the systems of equations that govern the evolution of the two fields. We recently presented the analysis of magnetic fields and hydrodynamics vorticity fields and argued for a formal theory of analogue magnetism. This article provides in depth technical details of the relevant considerations for the simulation procedures and extends the analyses to a range of fluids.
Our knowledge of dynamical black holes suffers from a lack of observational insight. In an analogue model of gravity, we can design a longitudinally symmetric dynamical acoustic black hole with a moving horizon. In this symmetric spacetime, the marginally outer trapped surface and the so called evolving horizon are degenerate. Interestingly, there are many ways of assigning a surface gravity to the horizon in the absence of time translation invariance. Here, we present two of them that are distinguished by whether they are defined only locally or take into account the global properties of spac…
It is well known that Teukolsky equation of gravitational perturbations provides a powerful tool for the investigation of the ringdown phase of a binary black hole merger, but it is applicable only for final configurations in the Kerr cases. Here we introduce a new concept: the spin-coefficient connection. Employing it and a new transformation function, we find that the gravitational perturbations can be written as a single equation. Each coefficients of this equation has explicit physical significance. More importantly, the equation is universally applied to virtually any black hole since it …
We show that the vorticity appearing in stationary vacuum spacetimes is always related to the existence of a flow of super-energy on the plane orthogonal to the vorticity vector. This result, toghether with the previously established link between vorticity and super--energy in radiative (Bondi-Sachs) spacetimes strength further the case for this latter quantity as the cause of frame dragging.
Modern meta-materials allow one to construct electromagnetic media with almost arbitrary bespoke permittivity, permeability, and magneto-electric tensors. If (and only if) the permittivity, permeability, and magneto-electric tensors satisfy certain stringent compatibility conditions, can the meta-material be fully described (at the wave optics level) in terms of an effective Lorentzian metric --- an analogue spacetime. We shall consider some of the standard black-hole spacetimes of primary interest in general relativity, in various coordinate systems, and determine the equivalent meta-material…
Using the asymptotic form of the bulk Weyl tensor, we present an explicit approach that allows us to reconstruct exact four-dimensional Einstein spacetimes which are algebraically special with respect to Petrov's classification. If the boundary metric supports a traceless, symmetric and conserved complex rank-two tensor, which is related to the boundary Cotton and energy-momentum tensors, and if the hydrodynamic congruence is shearless, then the bulk metric is exactly resummed and captures modes that stand beyond the hydrodynamic derivative expansion. We illustrate the method when the congruen…
Gravity is not only able to be mimicked in flat spacetimes, but also in curved spacetimes. We study analogue gravity models in curved spacetime by considering the relativistic Gross-Pitaevskii theory and Yang-Mills theory in the fixed background spacetime geometry. The results show that acoustic metrics can be emergent from curved spacetimes yielding a Hadamard product of a real metric-tensor and an analogue metric-tensor. Taking \emph{quantum vortices} as \emph{test particles}, we evaluate their released energy ratio during the "gravitational binding". The $2+1$-dimensional flat Minkowski met…
We study an area distance in the Riemannian spacetime with expansion, vorticity and acceleration. It is shown that this observable depends on expansion, deceleration and acceleration parameters to third order in redshift, as well as on vorticity. Thus, the considerable acceleration or vorticity of the Universe can substantially influence the standard astronomical distance calibrators.
We revisit the connection between trajectories of accelerated mirrors and spacetime metrics. We present the general (1+1)D effective metric that can be obtained with a fibre-optical analogue through the Kerr effect. Then we introduce a new connection between accelerated mirrors and the optical metric. In particular, we connect them for two specific trajectories: The first one is the black mirror that perfectly recreates the Schwarzchild spacetime. The second one is the Schwarzschild-Planck metric that is a regularized version of the Schwarzschild case. The regularization depends on a length sc…
In this article on the basis of a new definition of spacetime symmetry, which is in accordance with the symmetry of the curvature invariants, we investigate exact vacuum solutions of Einstein field equations corresponding to both static and stationary plane symmetric spacetimes using the concepts of the (1+3)-decomposition or threading formalism. Demanding the presence of a plane symmetric gravitomagnetic field we find a family of two parameter (m and l) solutions, every member of which being the plane symmetric analogue of NUT space.
We discuss spacetime singularity resolution in the context of the gravity/gauge correspondence, for brane systems which give rise to gauge theories with eight supercharges and no hypermultiplets. The discussion is aimed at non-experts. Writeup of talk on hep-th/9911161 with C.V.Johnson and J.Polchinski, given in various forms at: PASCOS-99, Aspen winter conference `Way Beyond the Standard Models', Banff CIAR Gravity+Cosmology Programme Meeting.
A recently developed technique known as analogue transformation acoustics has allowed the extension of the transformational paradigm to general spacetime transformations under which the acoustic equations are not form invariant. In this paper, we review the fundamentals of analogue transformation acoustics and show how this technique can be applied to build a device that increases the density of events within a given spacetime region by simultaneously compressing space and time.
A generalization of the McVittie solution, representing spacetime of a mass particle placed in (n+2) dimensional Robertson-Walker universe is reported.
Analogue black holes in non-Riemannian effective spacetime of moving vortical plasmas described by moving magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. This example is an extension of acoustic torsion recently introduced in the literature (Garcia de Andrade,PRD(2004),7,64004), where now the presence of artificial black holes in moving plasmas is obtained by the presence of an horizon in the non-Riemannian spacetime. Hawking radiation is computed in terms of the background magnetic field and the magnetic permeability. The metric is singular although Cartan analogue torsion is not necessarily singular. The e…
Here we review the way to build analogue spacetimes in open channel flows by looking at the flow phase diagram and the corresponding analogue experiments performed during the last years in the associated flow regimes. Thin films like the circular jump with different dispersive properties are discussed with the introduction of a brand new system for the next generation of analogue gravity experiments: flowing soap films with their capillary/elastic waves.
We present an analogue spacetime model that reproduces the salient features of the most common ansatz for quantum gravity phenomenology. We do this by investigating a system of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. This system can be tuned to have two "phonon" modes (one massive, one massless) which share the same limiting speed in the hydrodynamic approximation [Phys. Rev. D72 (2005) 044020, gr-qc/0506029; cond-mat/0409639]. The system nevertheless possesses (possibly non-universal) Lorentz violating terms at very high energies where "quantum pressure" becomes important. We investigate the p…
In the context of field theory in curved spacetimes, it is known that suitable background spacetime geometries can trigger instabilities of fields, leading to exponential growth of their (quantum and classical) fluctuations --- a phenomenon called $\textit{vacuum awakening}$ in the quantum context, which in some classical scenarios seeds $\textit{spontaneous scalarization/vectorization}$. Despite its conceptual interest, an actual observation in nature of this effect is uncertain since it depends on the existence of fields with appropriate masses and couplings in strong-gravity regimes. Here, …
Taking the principles of quantum mechanics as they stand and applying them to gravity, leads to the conclusion that one might be able to generate superpositions of spacetimes, at least formally. We analyze such a possibility from an analogue gravity perspective. We present an analogue toy model consisting of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential and identify the states that could potentially be interpreted as superposition of effective spacetimes. These states are unstable and the source of instability from a microscopic point of view can be related to the absence of a well-def…
In classical spacetime null geodesics give information on where free massless particles travel. In quantum spacetime where quantum indefiniteness renders spacetime fuzzy null geodesics as sharp trajectories cannot be retained. We propose a "tendency postulate" that gives information on where free massless objects tend to travel based exclusively on meaningful notions in quantum spacetime. It says that free massless objects tend to trace large quantum causal fluctuations. We implement the tendency postulate in concrete models of quantum spacetime that describe causal fluctuation. The tendency p…
These notes introduce the fundamentals of black hole geometry, the thermality of the vacuum, and the Hawking effect, in spacetime and its analogues. Stimulated emission of Hawking radiation, the trans-Planckian question, short wavelength dispersion, and white hole radiation in the setting of analogue models are also discussed. No prior knowledge of differential geometry, general relativity, or quantum field theory in curved spacetime is assumed.
Analogue gravity can be used to reproduce the phenomenology of quantum field theory in curved spacetime and in particular phenomena such as cosmological particle creation and Hawking radiation. In black hole physics, taking into account the backreaction of such effects on the metric requires an extension to semiclassical gravity and leads to an apparent inconsistency in the theory: the black hole evaporation induces a breakdown of the unitary quantum evolution leading to the so called information loss problem. Here we show that analogue gravity can provide an interesting perspective on the res…
Analogue spacetimes, (and more boldly, analogue models both of and for gravity), have attracted significant and increasing attention over the last decade and a half. Perhaps the most straightforward physical example, which serves as a template for most of the others, is Bill Unruh's model for a dumb hole, (mute black hole, acoustic black hole), wherein sound is dragged along by a moving fluid --- and can even be trapped behind an acoustic horizon. This and related analogue models for curved spacetimes are useful in many ways: Analogue spacetimes provide general relativists with extremely concr…
We construct quantum field theory in an analogue curved spacetime in Bose-Einstein condensates based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, by exactly relating quantum particles in curved spacetime with Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates. Here, we derive a simple formula relating the two, which can be used to calculate the particle creation spectrum by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Using our formulation, we numerically investigate particle creation in an analogue expanding Universe which can be expressed as Bogoliubov quasiparticles i…
We present a toy model where spacetime is emergent from a more fundamental microscopic system, and investigate the gray area interpolating between the collective and free-particle regimes. For a period of rapid exponential growth in the analogue universe, we argue that the intermediate regime is best described by a coloured potpourri of geometries -- a "rainbow geometry". This can be viewed as an alternative approach towards understanding quantum field theories in the presence of Lorentz-symmetry breaking at ultraviolet scales. Firstly, it is pointed out that cosmological particle production i…
The physical and geometrical meaning of the four parameters of Lewis metric for the Lewis class are investigated. Matching this spacetime to a completely anisotropic, rigidly rotating, fluid cylinder, we obtain from the junction conditions that the four parameters are related to the vorticity of the source. Furthermore it is shown that one of the parameters must vanish if one wishes to reduce the Lewis class to a locally static spacetime. Using the Cartan scalars it is shown that the Lewis class does not include globally Minkowski as special class, and that it is not locally equivalent to the …
Quantum fluctuations on curved spacetimes cause the emission of pairs of particles from the quantum vacuum, as in the Hawking effect from black holes. We use an optical analogue to gravity to investigate the influence of the curvature on quantum emission. Due to dispersion, the spacetime curvature varies with frequency here. We analytically calculate for all frequencies the particle flux, correlations and entanglement. We find that horizons increase the flux with a characteristic spectral shape. The photon number correlations transition from multi- to two-mode, with close to maximal entangleme…

We report an incipient exploration of the Lense-Thirring precession effect in a rotating \textit{acoustic analogue black hole} spacetime. An exact formula is deduced for the precession frequency of a gyroscope due to inertial frame dragging, close to the ergosphere of a `Draining Bathtub' acoustic spacetime which has been studied extensively for acoustic Hawking radiation of phonons and also for `superresonance'. The formula is verified by embedding the two dimensional spatial (acoustic) geometry into a three dimensional one where the similarity with standard Lense-Thirring precession results …
We present analogue models for the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetimes based on unidirectional hydrodynamic flows. We show that, with appropriate coordinate transformations, sound waves in a moving fluid propagate as scalar fields at the equatorial sections of Schwarzschild and RN black holes. The coordinate associated with the direction of the flow plays the role of the radial coordinate in standard Schwarzschild/RN coordinates, while the transversal spatial coordinate is related to the angular coordinate on each equatorial slice. The magnitude of the flow velocity is related…
It is shown that for a generic electrovacuum spacetime, electromagnetic radiation produces vorticity of worldlines of observers in a Bondi--Sachs frame. Such an effect (and the ensuing gyroscope precession with respect to the lattice) which is a reminiscence of generation of vorticity by gravitational radiation, may be linked to the nonvanishing of components of the Poynting and the super--Poynting vectors on the planes othogonal to the vorticity vector. The possible observational relevance of such an effect is commented.
The geodesic equations are integrated for the Lewis metric and the effects of the different parameters appearing in the Weyl class on the motion of test particles are brought out. Particular attention deserves the appearance of a force parallel to the axial axis and without Newtonian analogue.
Analogue gravity models describe linear fluctuations of fluids as a massless scalar field propagating on stationary acoustic spacetimes constructed from the background flow. In this paper, we establish that this paradigm generalizes to arbitrary order nonlinear perturbations propagating on dynamical analogue spacetimes. Our results hold for all inviscid, spherically symmetric and barotropic non-relativistic flows in the presence of an external conservative force. We demonstrate that such fluids always admit a dynamical description governed by a coupled pair of wave and continuity equations. We…
Exhaustive ghost solutions to Einstein-Weyl equations for two dimensional spacetimes are obtained, where the ghost neutrinos propagate in the background spacetime, but do not influence the background spacetime due to the vanishing stress-energy-momentum tensor for the ghost neutrinos. Especially, those non-trivial ghost solutions provide a counterexample to the traditional claim that the Einstein-Hilbert action has no meaningful two dimensional analogue.
The irrotational vortex geometry carachter of torsion loops is displayed by showing that torsion loops and nonradial flow acoustic metrics are conformally equivalent in $(1+1)$ dimensions while radial flow acoustic spacetime are conformally related in $(2+1)$ dimensional spacetime. The analysis of 2-dimensional space allows us to express the fluid density in terms of the parameters of torsion loop metric. These results lead us to conclude that the acoustic metric of vortex flows is the gravitational analog of torsion loop spacetime. Since no vorticity in the fluids is considered we do not make…
It is by now well known that various condensed matter systems may be used to mimic many of the kinematic aspects of general relativity, and in particular of curved-spacetime quantum field theory. In this essay we will take a look at what would be needed to mimic a cosmological spacetime -- to be precise a spatially flat FRW cosmology -- in one of these analogue models. In order to do this one needs to build and control suitable time dependent systems. We discuss here two quite different ways to achieve this goal. One might rely on an explosion, physically mimicking the big bang by an outflow o…
