A universal geometric inequality for bodies relating energy, size, angular momentum, and charge is naturally implied by Bekenstein's entropy bounds. We establish versions of this inequality for axisymmetric bodies satisfying appropriate energy conditions, thus lending credence to the most general form of Bekenstein's bound. Similar techniques are then used to prove a Penrose-like inequality in which the ADM energy is bounded from below in terms of horizon area, angular momentum, and charge. Lastly, new criteria for the formation of black holes is presented involving concentration of angular momentum, charge, and nonelectromagnetic matter energy.
After a detailed introduction including new examples, we give an exposition focusing on the Riemannian cases of the positive mass, Penrose, and ZAS in- equalities of general relativity, in general dimension.
Bekenstein bounds for the entropy of a body imply an universal inequality between size, energy, angular momentum and charge. We prove this inequality in Electromagnetism. We also prove it, for the particular case of zero angular momentum, in General Relativity. We further discuss the relation of these inequalities with inequalities between size, angular momentum and charge recently studied in the literature.
Bekenstein and Mayo proposed a generalised bound for the entropy, which implies some inequalities between the charge, energy, angular momentum, and the size of the macroscopic system. Dain has shown that Maxwell's electrodynamics satisfies all three inequalities. We investigate the validity of these relations in the context of nonlinear electrodynamics and show that Born-Infeld electrodynamics satisfies all of them. However, contrary to the linear theory, there is no rigidity statement in Born-Infeld. We study the physical meaning and the relationship between these inequalities and, in particu…
We consider complete asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds that are the graphs of smooth functions over $\mathbb R^n$. By recognizing the scalar curvature of such manifolds as a divergence, we express the ADM mass as an integral of the product of the scalar curvature and a nonnegative potential function, thus proving the Riemannian positive mass theorem in this case. If the graph has convex horizons, we also prove the Riemannian Penrose inequality by giving a lower bound to the boundary integrals using the Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality.
We use the inverse mean curvature flow to establish Penrose-type inequalities for time-symmetric Einstein-Maxwell initial data sets which can be suitably embedded as a hypersurface in Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $n\geq 3$. In particular, we prove a positive mass theorem for this class of charged black holes. As an application we show that the conjectured upper bound for the area in terms of the mass and the charge, which in dimension $n=3$ is relevant in connection with the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture, always holds under the natural assumption that the horizon is stable as a minimal hy…
The Riemannian Penrose inequality is a remarkable geometric inequality between the ADM mass of an asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature and the area of its outermost minimal surface. A version of the Riemannian Penrose inequality has also been established for the Einstein-Maxwell equations, where the lower bound on the mass also depends on the electric charge. In the context of quasi-local mass, one is interested in determining if, and for which quasi-local mass definitions, a quasi-local version of these inequalities also holds. It is known that the Brown-York quasi-…
Our current picture of black hole gravitational collapse relies on two assumptions: i) the resulting singularity is hidden behind an event horizon -- weak cosmic censorship conjecture -- and ii) spacetime eventually settles down to a stationarity state. In this setting, it follows that the minimal area containing an apparent horizon is bound by the square of the total ADM mass (Penrose inequality conjecture). Following Dain et al. 2002, we construct numerically a family of axisymmetric initial data with one or several marginally trapped surfaces. Penrose and related geometric inequalities are …
In this paper we study asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds given as graphs of asymptotically constant functions over hyperbolic space $\bH^n$. The graphs are considered as subsets of $\bH^{n+1}$ and carry the induced metric. For such manifolds the scalar curvature appears in the divergence of a 1-form involving the integrand for the asymptotically hyperbolic mass. Integrating this divergence we estimate the mass by an integral over an inner boundary. In case the inner boundary satisfies a convexity condition this can in turn be estimated in terms of the area of the inner boundary. The resultin…
The semi-classical Hawking evaporation process of Reissner-Nordström black holes is analyzed. It is shown that this quantum mechanism may turn a near-extremal black-hole spacetime with $T_{\text{BH}}\lesssim \hbar^2/G^2M^3$ into an horizonless naked singularity, thus violating the Penrose cosmic censorship conjecture. It is therefore conjectured that, within the framework of a self-consistent quantum theory of gravity, the Bekenstein-Hawking temperature should be bounded from below by the simple relation $T_{\text{BH}}\gtrsim \hbar^2/G^2M^3$.
Various higher-dimensional black holes have been shown to be unstable by studying linearized gravitational perturbations. A simpler method for demonstrating instability is to find initial data that describes a small perturbation of the black hole and violates a Penrose inequality. An easy way to construct initial data is by conformal rescaling of the unperturbed black hole initial data. For a compactified black string, we construct initial data which violates the inequality almost exactly where the Gregory-Laflamme instability appears. We then use the method to confirm the existence of the "ul…
The non zero value of Planck constant $h$ underlies the emergence of several inequalities that must be satisfied in the quantum realm, the most prominent one being Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Among these inequalities, Bekenstein bound provides a universal limit on the entropy that can be contained in a localized quantum system of given size and total energy. In this Letter, we explore how Bekenstein bound is affected when Heisenberg uncertainty relation is deformed so as to accommodate gravitational effects close to Planck scale (Generalized Uncertainty Principle). By resorting to genera…
We consider collision of two massive particles in the equatorial plane of an axially symmetric stationary spacetime that produces two massless particles afterwards. It is implied that the horizon is absent but there is a naked singularity or another potential barrier that makes possible the head-on collision. The relationship between the energy in the center of mass frame $E_{c.m.}$ and the Killing energy $E$ measured at infinity is analyzed. It follows immediately from the Wald inequalities that unbounded $E$ is possible for unbounded $E_{c.m.}$ only. This can be realized if the spacetime is …
In this paper we prove a mass-capacity inequality and a volumetric Penrose inequality for conformally flat manifolds, in arbitrary dimensions. As a by-product of the proofs, Pólya-Szegö and Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequalities for mean-convex Euclidean domains are obtained. For each inequality, the case of equality is characterized.
The Penrose strong cosmic censorship conjecture asserts that Cauchy horizons inside dynamically formed black holes are unstable to remnant matter fields that fall into the black holes. The physical importance of this conjecture stems from the fact that it provides a necessary condition for general relativity to be a truly deterministic theory of gravity. Determining the fate of the Penrose conjecture in non-asymptotically flat black-hole spacetimes has been the focus of intense research efforts in recent years. In the present essay we provide a remarkably compact proof, which is based on Beken…
In 1973, R. Penrose presented an argument that the total mass of a space-time which contains black holes with event horizons of total area $A$ should be at least $\sqrt{A/16π}$. An important special case of this physical statement translates into a very beautiful mathematical inequality in Riemannian geometry known as the Riemannian Penrose inequality. This inequality was first established by G. Huisken and T. Ilmanen in 1997 for a single black hole and then by one of the authors (H.B.) in 1999 for any number of black holes. The two approaches use two different geometric flow techniques and ar…
In this paper we revisit Brill's proof of positive mass for three-dimensional, time-symmetric, axisymmetric initial data and generalise his argument in various directions. In 3+1 dimensions, we include an apparent horizon in the initial data and prove the Riemannian Penrose inequality in a wide number of cases by an elementary argument. In the case of 4+1 dimensions we obtain the analogue of Brill's formula for initial data admitting a generalised form of axisymmetry. Including an apparent horizon in the initial data, the Riemannian Penrose inequality is again proved for a large class of cases…
The universe today, with structure such as stars, galaxies and black holes, seems to have evolved from a very homogeneous initial state. From this it appears as if the entropy of the universe is decreasing, in violation of the second law of thermodynamics. It has been suggested by Roger Penrose \cite{grossmann:penrose:wcc} that this inconsistency can be solved if one assigns an entropy to the spacetime geometry. He also pointed out that the Weyl tensor has the properties one would expect to find in a description of a gravitational entropy. In this article we make an attempt to use this so-call…
We study the validity of Bekenstein's entropy bound for a charged black hole in the context of nonlinear electrodynamics. Bekenstein's inequalities are commonly understood as universal relations between the entropy, the charge, the momentum, and the energy of a physical system but independent of its dynamics. In particular, we consider the Born-Infeld electrodynamics coupled to gravity as described by General Relativity. Following the steps that lead to these inequalities, we study the absorption of a charged test particle by the black hole and verify that the entropy bound is violated. We fin…
In this paper lower bounds are obtained for quasi-local masses in terms of charge, angular momentum, and horizon area. In particular we treat three quasi-local masses based on a Hamiltonian approach, namely the Brown-York, Liu-Yau, and Wang-Yau masses. The geometric inequalities are motivated by analogous results for the ADM mass. They may be interpreted as localized versions of these inequalities, and are also closely tied to the conjectured Bekenstein bounds for entropy of macroscopic bodies. In addition, we give a new proof of the positivity property for the Wang-Yau mass which is used to r…

In this paper we show positive mass theorems and Penrose type inequalities for the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern mass, which was introduced recently in \cite{GWW}, for asymptotically flat CF manifolds and its rigidity.
We study the properties of the loosely trapped surface (LTS) and the dynamically transversely trapping surface (DTTS) in Einstein-Maxwell systems. These concepts of surfaces were proposed by the four of the present authors in order to characterize strong gravity regions. We prove the Penrose-like inequalities for the area of LTSs/DTTSs. Interestingly, although the naively expected upper bound for the area is that of the photon sphere of a Reissner-Nordstroem black hole with the same mass and charge, the obtained inequalities include corrections represented by the energy density or pressure/ten…
The Penrose-Gibbons inequality for charged black holes is proved in spherical symmetry, assuming that outside the black hole there are no current sources, meaning that the charge e is constant, with the remaining fields satisfying the dominant energy condition. Specifically, for any achronal hypersurface which is asymptotically flat at spatial or null infinity and has an outermost marginal surface of areal radius r, the asymptotic mass m satisfies 2m >= r + e^2/r. Replacing m by a local energy, the inequality holds locally outside the black hole. A recent definition of dynamic surface gravity …
The strong cosmic censorship conjecture, introduced by Penrose five decades ago, asserts that, in self-consistent theories of gravity, Cauchy horizons inside dynamically formed black holes should be unstable to remnant perturbation fields that fall into the newly born black holes. The question of the (in)validity of this intriguing conjecture in non-asymptotically flat charged black-hole spacetimes has recently attracted much attention from physicists and mathematicians. We here provide a general proof, which is based on Bekenstein's generalized second law of thermodynamics, for the validity o…
Perelman has given a gradient formulation for the Ricci flow, introducing an ``entropy function'' which increases monotonically along the flow.We pursue a thermodynamic analogy and apply Ricci flow ideas to general relativity. We investigate whether Perelman's entropy is related to (Bekenstein-Hawking)geometric entropy as familiar from black hole thermodynamics. From a study of the fixed points of the flow we conclude that Perelman entropy is not connected to geometric entropy. However, we notice that there is a very similar flow which DOES appear to be connected to geometric entropy. The new …
Particle collisions in black hole ergoregions may result in extremely high center of mass energies that could probe new physics if escape to infinity were possible. Here we show that some geodesics at high inclinations to the equatorial plane may be unbound. Hence a finite flux of annihilation debris is able to escape, especially in the case of near-extremal Kerr black holes and if the Penrose process plays a role. For a class of Penrose processes, we show that the Wald inequalities are satisfied, allowing the Penrose process to have a key role in high energy ejection. Hence the possibility of…
We investigate the impacts of Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) proposed by some approaches to quantum gravity such as String Theory and Doubly Special Relativity on black hole thermodynamics and Salecker-Wigner inequalities. Utilizing Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the Hawking temperature, Bekenstein entropy, specific heat, emission rate and decay time are calculated. As the evaporation entirely eats up the black hole mass, the specific heat vanishes and the temperature approaches infinity with an infinite radiation rate. It is found that the GUP approach prevents the black hole from…
We apply the Riemannian Penrose inequality and the Riemannian positive mass theorem to derive inequalities on the boundary of a class of compact Riemannian $3$-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature. The boundary of such a manifold has a CMC component, i.e. a $2$-sphere with positive constant mean curvature; and the rest of the boundary, if nonempty, consists of closed minimal surfaces. A key step in our proof is the construction of a collar extension that is inspired by the method of Mantoulidis-Schoen \cite{M-S}.
Hamiltonian dynamics of gravitational field contained in a spacetime region with boundary $S$ being a null-like hypersurface (a wave front) is discussed. Complete Hamiltonian formula for the dynamics (with no surface integrals neglected) is derived. A quasi-local proof of the first law of black holes thermodynamics is obtained as a consequence, in case when $S$ is a non-expanding horizon. The zeroth law and Penrose inequalities are discussed from this point of view.
We prove area inequalities for stable marginally outer trapped surfaces in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. Our inspiration comes on the one hand from a corresponding upper bound for the area in terms of the charges obtained recently by Dain, Jaramillo and Reiris [1] in the pure Einstein-Maxwell case without symmetries, and on the other hand from Yazadjiev's inequality [2] in the axially symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton case. The common issue in these proofs and in the present one is a functional ${\mathscr W}$ of the matter fields for which the stability condition readily yields an {\it upp…
We investigate, in the case of a Reissner-Nordström black hole, the definitions of gravitational energy and gravitational pressure that naturally arise in the framework of the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity. In particular, we calculate the gravitational energy enclosed by the event horizon of the black hole, E, and the radial pressure over it, p. With these quantities we then analyse the thermodynamic relation dE + pdV (as p turns out to be a density, dV is actually given by dV = dr dθdϕ, in spherically-type coordinates). We compare the latter with the standard first law of blac…
Hamiltonian description of gravitational field contained in a spacetime region with boundary $S$ being a null-like hypersurface (a wave front) is discussed. Complete generating formula for the Hamiltonian dynamics (with no surface integrals neglected) is presented. A quasi-local proof of the 1-st law of black holes thermodynamics is obtained as a consequence, in case when $S$ is a non-expanding horizon. The 0-th law and Penrose inequalities are discussed from this point of view.
We study the method for generating the initial data of black hole systems in Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity. The initial data are assumed to be momentarily static and conformally flat. Although the equation for the conformal factor is highly nonlinear, it is successfully solved by numerical relaxation for one-black-hole and two-black-hole systems. The common apparent horizon is studied in the two-black-hole initial data, and the result suggests that the Penrose inequalities are satisfied in this system. This is the first step for simulating black hole collisions in higher-curvature theories.
We briefly review of the definitions of the total energy, the total linear momentum and the angular momentum of gravitational field when the cosmological constant is zero. In particular, we show pseudo-tensor's definition of the energy and the momentum given by Prof. Duan in 1963 agree with the ADM total energy-momentum and the Bondi energy-momentum at spatial and null infinity respectively. We also review the relevant energy-momentum inequalities. Finally, we provide a short review of the positive energy theorem and the peeling property of the Newmann-Penrose quantities when the cosmological …
A quantum extremal island suggests that a region of spacetime is encoded in the quantum state of another system, like the encoding of the black hole interior in Hawking radiation. We study conditions for islands to appear in general spacetimes, with or without black holes. They must violate Bekenstein's area bound in a precise sense, and the boundary of an island must satisfy several other information-theoretic inequalities. These conditions combine to impose very strong restrictions, which we apply to cosmological models. We find several examples of islands in crunching universes. In particul…
We construct initial data corresponding to a single perturbed Kerr black hole in vacuum. These data are defined on specific hyperboloidal ("ACMC-") slices on which the mean extrinsic curvature K asymptotically approaches a constant at future null infinity scri+. More precisely, we require that K obeys the Taylor expansion K=K0 + s^4 where K0 is a constant and s describes a compactified spatial coordinate such that scri+ is represented by s=0. We excise the singular interior of the black hole and assume a marginally outer trapped surface as inner boundary of the computational domain. The moment…
