We introduce the concept of Plasmonic Parametric Resonance (PPR) as a novel way to amplify high angular momentum plasmonic modes of nanoparticles by means of a simple uniform optical pump. In analogy with parametric resonance in dynamical systems, PPR originates from the temporal modulation of one of the parameters governing the evolution of the state of the system. As opposed to conventional localized surface plasmon resonances, we show that in principle any plasmonic mode of arbitrarily high order is accessible by PPR with a spatially uniform optical pump. Moreover, in contradistinction with other mechanisms of plasmonic amplification, the coherent nature of PPR lends itself to a more straightforward experimental detection approach. The threshold conditions for PPR are analytically derived. Schemes of experimental realization and detection are also discussed.
Exploiting the dynamics of Plasmonic Parametric Resonance (PPR), we introduce the theory of Plasmonic Parametric Absorbers (PPA). The key insight informing the PPA idea is that in the PPR process a pump field experiences an extinction rate that strongly depends on the intensity of the pump itself, creating two distinct regimes: one of weak absorption under low intensity illumination, and one of strong absorption when the threshold of parametric resonance is met or exceeded. Due to this reverse saturable absorption behavior, PPAs are promising candidates for optical limiting applications.
Hotspots of surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) are localized within 1 nm at gaps or crevices of plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) dimers. We demonstrate SERRS hotspots with volumes that are extended in one dimension tens of thousand times compared to standard zero-dimensional hotspots using gaps or crevices of plasmonic nanowire (NW) dimers.
We theoretically examine plasmonic resonance between two close metallic grains separated by a gap of width much less than the length of the incident electromagnetic wave. Resonance conditions are established and the electric field enhancement is found. Our general arguments are confirmed by analytic solution of the problem for simplest geometries. We discuss an extension of our results to more complex cases.
The spectral response of a plasmonic nanostructure may heavily depend on the refractive index of its surroundings. The key idea of this paper is to control this response by coherent optical means, i.e. with an optically controlled electromagnetically-induced-transparency medium. In such environment, an external laser provides a knob to shift the position of plasmonic resonances without the need to change the geometry of the nanostructure. Additionally, the setup can be exploited to excite narrow-band surface plasmon polaritons.
We demonstrate an efficient double-layer light absorber by exciting plasmonic phase resonances. We show that the addition of grooves can cause mode splitting of the plasmonic waveguide cavity modes and all the new resonant modes exhibit large absorptivity greater than 90%. Some of the generated absorption peaks have wide-angle characteristics. Furthermore, we find that the proposed structure is fairly insensitive to the alignment error between different layers. The proposed plasmonic nano-structure designs may have exciting potential applications in thin film solar cells, thermal emitters, nov…
Plasmonic and Mie resonances in subwavelength nanostructures provide an efficient way to manipulate light below the diffraction limit that has fostered the growth of plasmonics and nanophotonics. Plasmonic resonances have been mainly related with the excitation of free charge carriers, initially in metals, and Mie resonances have been identified in Si nanostructures. Remarkably, although much less studied, semi-metals, semiconductors and topological insulators of the p-block enable plasmonic resonances without free charge carriers and Mie resonances with enhanced properties compared with Si. I…
Plasmonic enhancement of nonlinear light-matter interaction can be achieved via dedicated optimization of resonant plasmonic modes that are spectrally matched to the different wavelengths involved in the particular nonlinear optical process. In this work, we investigate the generation and enhancement of broadband four-wave mixing (FWM) in a plasmonic azimuthally chirped grating (ACG). The azimuthally varying grating periodicity in an ACG offers a well-defined channel to mediate the near field and the far field over a broad range of wavelengths. However, the particular mechanism responsible for…
We present a numerical study on a 2D array of plasmonic structures covered by a subwavelength film. We explain the origin of surface lattice resonances (SLRs) using coupled dipole approximation and show that the diffraction-assisted plasmonic resonances and formation of bound states in the continuum (BICs) can be controlled by altering the optical environment. Our study shows that when the refractive index contrast is small ( $Δ$n < -0.1), the SLR cannot be excited, while a significant contrast ($Δ$n > 0.3) not only sustains plasmonic-induced resonances but also forms both symmetry-protected a…
The design, fabrication, and optical properties of a composite plasmonic structure, a two-dimentional array of split-ring resonators inserted into periodic square holes of a metal film, have been reported. A new type of transmission resonance, which makes a significant difference from the conventional peaks, has been suggested both theoretically and experimentally. To understand this effect, a mechanism of ring- resonance induced dipole emission is proposed.
A method for designing plasmonic particles with desired resonance spectra is presented. The method is based on repetitive perturbations of an initial particle shape while calculating the eigenvalues of the various quasistatic resonances. The method is rigorously proved, assuring a solution exists for any required spectral resonance location. Resonances spanning the visible and the near-infrared regimes, as designed by our method, are verified using finite-difference time-domain simulations. A novel family of particles with collocated dipole-quadrupole resonances is designed, demonstrating the …
By embedding four-rod resonators inside double-split ring resonators superlattice, a planar composite metamaterial possessing tripod plasmonic resonances is fabricated. Double Fano resonances are observed where a common subradiant driven oscillator is coupled with two superradiant oscillators. As a classical analogue of four-level tripod atomic system, the transmission spectrum of the composite metamaterial exhibits a double Fano-based coherent effect. Transfer of absorbed power between two superradiant oscillators is controlled by manipulating two coupling strengths conjugated through the pol…
We demonstrate that the emission of light by fluorescent molecules in the proximity of periodic arrays of nanoantennas or plasmonic crystals can be strongly modified when the arrays are covered by a dielectric film. The coupling between localized surface plasmon resonances and photonic states leads to surface modes which increase the density of optical states and improve light extraction. Excited dye molecules preferentially decay radiatively into these modes, exhibiting an enhanced and directional emission.
We propose a new concept for generation of ultrashort pulses based on transient plasmonic resonance in nanoparticle composites. Photoionization and free-carriers plasma change the susceptibility of nanoparticles on a few-femtosecond scale. This results in a narrow time window during the pump pulse duration when the system is in plasmonic resonance, accompanied by a short burst of the local field. During this process, frequency-tunable few-fs pulses are generated. We elucidate the details of the above mechanism, and investigate the influences of different contributing processes.
Polarizability expressions are commonly used in optics and photonics to model the light scattering by small particles. Models based on Taylor series of the scattering coefficients of the particles fail to predict the morphologic resonances hosted by dielectric particles. Here, we propose to use the factorization of the special functions appearing in the expression of the Mie scattering coefficients to derive point-like models. These models can be applied to reproduce both Mie resonances of dielectric particles and plasmonic resonances of metallic particles. They provide simple but robust tools…
We study the dispersions of plasmonic bands that arise from the coupling of electric quadrupole resonances in three dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) consisting of plasmonic spheres. Through analytical derivation, we show that two branches of quadrupole bands in simple cubic PCs with a small lattice constant possess negative group velocities. Distinct from double negative media in which the negative responses originates from the coupling of electric and magnetic responses (P and M), the negative dispersion induced by quadrupole resonance is an intrinsic property of quadrupole that does not r…
Plasmonic lattices consisting of nanoparticles in a homogeneous environment are well known fortheir support of so-called lattice plasmon resonances. They are associated with localized surfaceplasmons coupled to each other via free propagating photons along the structure. In this paper, weexplore modes in a stack of two identical plasmonic lattices. We demonstrate that such a structureis able to support a mode that is positioned strictly on a Rayleigh anomaly and does not shift withthe variation of distance between two lattices in wide limits. Given the fact that period is the moststably reprod…
The behavior of Fano resonance and the reversal of near field optical binding force of dimers over different substrates have not been studied so far. In this work, we observe that if the closely located plasmonic cube homodimers over glass or high permittivity dielectric substrate are illuminated with plane wave polarized parallel to dimer axis, no reversal of optical binding force occurs. But if we apply the same set-up over a plasmonic substrate, stable Fano resonance occurs along with the reversal of near field binding force. It is observed that during such Fano resonance stronger coupling …
In this work, a 2D magneto-plasmonic grating structure combining materials with ferromagnetic and plasmonic properties is demonstrated. NiFe composite ferromagnetic material, as an active medium with tunable physical properties, and Au metal, as a plasmonic excitation layer, were the materials of choice. Here, we have experimentally investigated the active control of the plasmonic characteristics in Au/NiFe bilayer by the action of an external magnetic field, as well as the switching effect of the system. The active plasmonic control, can be achieved by the magnetization switching of the ferro…
Multiresonant metasurfaces could enable many applications in filtering, sensing and nonlinear optics. However, developing a metasurface with more than one high-quality-factor or high-Q resonance at designated resonant wavelengths is challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a plasmonic metasurface exhibiting different, narrow surface lattice resonances by exploiting the polarization degree of freedom where different lattice modes propagate along different dimensions of the lattice. The surface consists of aluminum nanostructures in a rectangular periodic lattice. The resulting surface l…
We have investigated second harmonic generation (SHG) from Ag-coated LiNbO3 (LN) core-shell nanocuboids and found that giant SHG can occur via deliberately designed double plasmonic resonances. By controlling the aspect ratio, we can tune fundamental wave (FW) and SHG signal to match the longitudinal and transverse plasmonic modes simultaneously, and achieve giant enhancement of SHG by more than five orders of magnitude in comparison to a bare LN nanocuboid and by about one order of magnitude to the case adopting only single plasmonic resonance. The underlying key physics is that the double-re…
We demonstrate that an array of optical antennas may render a thin layer of randomly oriented semiconductor nanocrystals into an enhanced and highly directional source of polarized light. The array sustains collective plasmonic lattice resonances which are in spectral overlap with the emission of the nanocrystals over narrow angular regions. Consequently, different photon energies of visible light are enhanced and beamed into definite directions.
Absorbing and emitting optical properties of a spherical plasmonic nanoantenna are described in terms of the size dependent resonance frequencies and damping rates of the multipolar surface plasmons (SP). We provide the plasmon size characteristics for gold and silver spherical particles up to the large size retardation regime where the plasmon radiative damping is significant. We underline the role of the radiation damping in comparison with the energy dissipation damping in formation of receiving and transmitting properties of a plasmonic particle. The size dependence of both: the multipolar…
We consider cloaking by a coated cylindrical system using plasmonic resonance, and extend previous quasistatic treatments to include the effect of finite wavelength. We show that a probe cylinder can still be cloaked at finite wavelengths, but the cloaking cylinder develops a non-zero scattering cross-section. We show that this latter effect is dominated by a monopole term in the case of an ideal (lossless) cloaking material, and by a dipole term in the case of a realistic (lossy) material. It can be reduced but not eliminated by variations of geometric or dielectric parameters of the cloaking…
A tri-layer metamaterial perfect absorber of light, consisting of (Al/ZnS/Al) films with the top aluminium layer patterned as an array of circular disk nanoantennas, is investigated for resonantly enhancing Raman scattering from C-60 fullerene molecules deposited on the metamaterial. The metamaterial is designed to have resonant bands due to plasmonic and electromagnetic resonances at the Raman pump frequency (725 nm) as well as Stokes emission bands. The Raman scattering from C60 on the metamaterial with resonantly matched bands is measured to be enhanced by an order of magnitude more than fr…
We propose to use collective lattice resonances in plasmonic nanoparticle arrays to enhance photoelectron emission in Schottky-barrier photodetectors and solar cells. We show that the interaction of lattice resonances (the Rayleigh anomaly) and individual particle excitations (localized surface plasmon resonances) leads to stronger local field enhancement and significant increase of the photocurrent compared to the case when only individual particle excitations are present. The results can be used to design new photodetectors with highly selective, tunable spectral response, able to detect pho…
Plasmonic nanostructures hold promise for the realization of ultra-thin sub-wavelength devices, reducing power operating thresholds and enabling nonlinear optical functionality in metasurfaces. However, this promise is substantially undercut by absorption introduced by resistive losses, causing the metasurface community to turn away from plasmonics in favour of alternative material platforms (e.g., dielectrics) that provide weaker field enhancement, but more tolerable losses. Here, we report a plasmonic metasurface with a quality-factor (Q-factor) of 2340 in the telecommunication C band by exp…
We develop an approximate quasi-static theory describing the low-frequency plasmonic resonances of slender nanometallic rings and configurations thereof. First, we use asymptotic arguments to reduce the plasmonic eigenvalue problem governing the geometric (material- and frequency-independent) modes of a given ring structure to a 1D-periodic integro-differential problem in which the eigenfunctions are represented by azimuthal voltage and polarization-charge profiles associated with each ring. Second, we obtain closed-form solutions to the reduced eigenvalue problem for azimuthally invariant rin…
Fano resonance exhibiting an asymmetric spectral line shape is a universal phenomenon observed in diverse physical systems. Here we experimentally establish a direct link between the spectral asymmetry parameter and a physically realizable phase factor of interference between a continuum and a discrete mode that leads to Fano resonance. Using a specially designed metamaterial, namely waveguided plasmonic crystal with a spatially varying orientation axis of plasmonic grating, we demonstrate control on the spectral asymmetry of the Fano resonance through changes in the geometric phase of polariz…
We study the optical properties associated to both the polariton gap and the Bragg gap in periodic resonator-waveguide coupled system, based on the temporal coupled mode theory and the transfer matrix method. By the complex band and the transmission spectrum, it is feasible to tune the interaction between multiple Bragg scattering and the local resonance, which may give rise to analogous phenomena of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We further design a plasmonic slot waveguide side-coupled with local plasmonic resonator to demonstrate the EIT-like effects in the near-infared ban…
We have developed a self consistent technique to predict the behavior of plasmon resonances in multi-component systems as a function of wavelength. This approach, based on the tight lower bounds of the Bergman-Milton formulation, is able to predict experimental optical data, including the positions, shifts and shapes of plasmonic peaks in ternary nanocomposites without using any ftting parameters. Our approach is based on viewing the mixing of 3 components as the mixing of 2 binary mixtures, each in the same host. We obtained excellent predictions of the experimental optical behavior for mixtu…
Plasmonic dark modes are pure near-field resonances since their dipole moments are vanishing in far field. These modes are particularly interesting to enhance nonlinear light-matter interaction at the nanometer scale because radiative losses are mitigated therefore increasing the intrinsic lifetime of the resonances. However, the excitation of dark modes by standard far field approaches is generally inefficient because the symmetry of the electromagnetic near-field distribution has a poor overlap with the excitation field. Here, we demonstrate the selective optical excitation of bright and dar…
We investigate light scattering by coated spheres composed of a dispersive plasmonic core and a dielectric shell. By writing the absorption cross-section in terms of the internal electromagnetic fields, we demonstrate it is an observable sensitive to interferences that ultimately lead to the Fano effect. Specially, we show that unconventional Fano resonances, recently discovered for homogeneous spheres with large dielectric permittivities, can also occur for metallic spheres coated with single dielectric layers. These resonances arise from the interference between two electromagnetic modes wit…
The rapidly developing field of plasmonics can be roughly categorized into two branches: surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating in plasmonic waveguides and localized surface plasmons (LSPs) supported by scattering plasmonic particles. Investigations along these two directions usually employ quite different approaches and techniques, resulting in more or less a dogma that the two branches progress almost independently of each other, with few interactions. Here in this work we interpret LSPs from a Bohr model based geometric perspective relying on SPPs, thus establishing a connection betw…
Optical resonances spanning the Near and Short Infra-Red spectral regime were exhibited experimentally by arrays of plasmonic nano-particles with concave cross-section. The concavity of the particle was shown to be the key ingredient for enabling the broad band tunability of the resonance frequency, even for particles with dimensional aspect ratios of order unity. The atypical flexibility of setting the resonance wavelength is shown to stem from a unique interplay of local geometry with surface charge distributions.
The plasmonic structures exhibiting narrowband resonances (NBR) are of a great interest for various applications. We propose to use hysteresis behavior in a 1D system of nonlinear nanoresonators in order to achieve the NRB; the nonlinearity is provided by saturation of a two-level quantum system coupled with the nanoresonators (nanolaser/spaser configuration). Quantum Dots (QD) were assumed as quantum systems; their numerical parameters have been adopted for estimations. Role of the loss compensation on the quality of the NBR is shown for below (under compensation) and above threshold (generat…
We propose several planar layouts of ultra-compact plasmonic waveguide modulators that utilize alternative CMOS-compatible materials. The modulation is efficiently achieved by tuning the carrier concentration in a transparent conducting oxide layer, thereby tuning the waveguide either in plasmonic resonance or off-resonance. Resonance significantly increases the absorption coefficient of the plasmonic waveguide, which enables larger modulation depth. We show that an extinction ratio of 86 dB/um can be achieved, allowing for a 3-dB modulation depth in less than one micron at the telecommunicati…
The effects of Fano resonance on the optical chirality of planar plasmonic nanodevices in the visible wavelength range are experimentally observed and theoretically explained. The nanodevice consists of a nanodisk at the center with six gold nanorods with an orientation angle to exhibit optical chirality under dark-field illumination. The chiral response induced by the gold nanorods are affected by the presence of the nanodisk with different diameters which causes Fano resonance. An intriguing change to the opposite selection preference of different handedness of the circularly polarized light…
Fano resonances are features in transmissivity/reflectivity/absorption that owe their origin to the interaction between a bright resonance and a dark (i.e., sub-radiant) narrower resonance, and may emerge in the optical properties of planar two-dimensional (2D) periodic arrays (metasurfaces) of plasmonic nanoparticles. In this Letter, we provide a thorough assessment of their nature for the general case of normal and oblique plane wave incidence, highlighting when a Fano resonance is affected by the mutual coupling in an array and its capability to support free modal solutions. We analyze the …
We analytically study the spontaneous emission of a single optical dipole emitter in the vicinity of a plasmonic nanoshell, based on the Lorenz-Mie theory. We show that the fluorescence enhancement due to the coupling between optical emitter and sphere can be tuned by the aspect ratio of the core-shell nanosphere and by the distance between the quantum emitter and its surface. In particular, we demonstrate that both the enhancement and quenching of the fluorescence intensity are associated with plasmonic Fano resonances induced by near- and far-field interactions. These Fano resonances have as…
Plasmonic resonances in metallic nanostructures have been shown to drastically enhance local electromagnetic fields, and thereby increase the efficiency of nonlinear optical phenomena, such as second harmonic generation (SHG). While it has been experimentally observed that enhanced fields can significantly boost SHG, to date it proved difficult to probe electrical and magnetic resonances in one and the same nanostructure. This however is necessary to directly compare relative contributions of electrical and magnetic components of SHG enhancement. In this paper we report an experimental study o…
A composite plasmonic slab based on double-layer metallic gratings and a dielectric film is experimentally and numerically demonstrated in terahertz (THz) regions, which can support two resonance modes and then form a broad bandgap (40%). As compared to the double-layer metal grating, the dielectric film in composite THz slabs significantly enhances the transmission of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode. Electric field vector proved that the low-frequency resonance mode originates from the symmetric plasmonic mode and the high-frequency resonance mode is induced by the hybrid mode of plasmonic …
A periodic plasmonic meta-material was studied using finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method to investigate the influence of neighboring particles on the near unity optical absorptivity. The meta-material was constructed as a silver nanoparticle (20-90nm) situated above an alumina (Al$_2$O$_3$) dielectric environment. A full parametric sweep of the particle width and the dielectric thickness was conducted. Computational results identified several resonances between the metal-dielectric and metal-air that have potential to broadening the response through stacked geometry. A significant coup…
We study the light scattering by plasmonic and dielectric symmetric trimers to investigate the existence of polarization-independent Fano resonances. Plasmonic hybridization theory is revealed to hide simple physics, and we instead provide a simplified model for hybridization to derive a plasmonic trimer's eigenmodes analytically. This approach is demonstrated to accurately recreate full wave simulations of plasmonic trimers and their Fano resonances. We are subsequently able to deduce the grounds for modal interference in plasmonic trimers and the related formation of Fano resonances. However…
For all applications of plasmonics to technology it is required to tailor the resonance to the optical system in question. This chapter gives an understanding of the design considerations for nanoparticles needed to tune the resonance. First the basic concepts of plasmonics are reviewed with a focus on the physics of nanoparticles. An introduction to the finite element method is given with emphasis on the suitability of the method to nanoplasmonic device simulation. The effects of nanoparticle shape on the spectral position and lineshape of the plasmonic resonance are discussed including retar…
We theoretically study transmission in nanowaveguide coupled to high-quality plasmon resonances for which the metal loss is overcompensated by gain. The on-resonance transmission can vary widely from lower than --20dB to higher than 20dB for a range of gain coefficient. A reversible transition between the high-quality amplification and the suppression can be induced by a quite small change of gain coefficient for a moderately increased distance between the waveguide and the resonator. It is expected that in practice a small change of gain coefficient can be made by flexibly controlling pumping…
A plasmonic nanoantenna probed by a plane-polarized optical field in a medium with no gain materials can show zero absorption or even amplification, while exhibiting maximal polarizability. This occurs through coupling to an adjacent nanoantenna in a specially designed metamolecule, which is pumped by an orthogonal optical field with phase shift. The introduced scheme is a classical counterpart of an effect known in quantum optics as enhancement of the index of refraction (EIR). In contrary to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), where the medium is rendered highly dispersive at the…
We derive a closed-form expression that accurately predicts the peak frequency-shift and broadening induced by tiny perturbations of plasmonic nanoresonators without critically relying on repeated electrodynamic simulations of the spectral response of nanoresonator for various locations, sizes or shapes of the perturbing objects. The force of the present approach, in comparison with other approaches of the same kind, is that the derivation is supported by a mathematical formalism based on a rigorous normalization of the resonance modes of nanoresonators consisting of lossy and dispersive mater…
We present an optical mode solver for a whispering gallery resonator coupled to an adjacent arbitrary shaped nano-particle that breaks the axial symmetry of the resonator. Such a hybrid resonator-nanoparticle is similar to what was recently used for bio-detection and for field enhancement. We demonstrate our solver by parametrically studying a toroid-nanoplasmonic device and get the optimal nano-plasmonic size for maximal enhancement. We investigate cases near a plasmonic resonance as well as far from a plasmonic resonance. Unlike common plasmons that typically benefit from working near their …
Resonances in optical systems are useful for many applications, such as frequency comb generation, optical filtering, and biosensing. However, many of these applications are difficult to implement in optical metasurfaces because traditional approaches for designing multi-resonant nanostructures require significant computational and fabrication efforts. To address this challenge, we introduce the concept of Fourier lattice resonances (FLRs) in which multiple desired resonances can be chosen a priori and used to dictate the metasurface design. Because each resonance is supported by a distinct su…
Plasmonic cavities can be used to control the atom-photon coupling process at the nanoscale, since they provide ultrahigh density of optical states in an exceptionally small mode volume. Here we demonstrate strong coupling between molecular excitons and plasmonic resonances (so-called plexcitonic coupling) in a film-coupled nanocube cavity, which can induce profound and significant spectral and spatial modifications to the plasmonic gap modes. Within the spectral span of a single gap mode in the nanotube-film cavity with a 3-nm wide gap, the introduction of narrow-band J-aggregate dye molecule…
In this article, we present a numerical study of the optical properties of a metal nanowire interacting with a localized cavity in a two dimensional photonic crystal. The nature of the modes, their wavelength and width are investigated as a function of the particle radius. It is shown in particular that a particle with diameter about the lattice constant presents very narrow resonances corresponding to hybrid photonic-plasmonic modes, where increased lifetime is attributed to the decrease of the radiative losses by interaction with the photonic crystal. These results open interesting applicati…
We present measurements on plasmonic meta-molecules under local excitation using cathodoluminescence which show a spatial redistribution of the local density of optical states (LDOS) at the same frequency where a sharp spectral Fano-feature in the extinction cross section has been observed. Our analytical model shows that both near- and far-field effects arise due to interference of the same two eigenmodes of the system. We present quantitative insights both in a bare state, and in a dressed state picture that describe plasmonic Fano interference either as near-field amplitude transfer between…
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a two-scale architecture able to achieve giant field enhancement by simultaneously exploiting both the Rayleigh anomaly and localized surface plasmon resonance. Metallic oligomers composed of colloidal nanospheres are well-known for the ability to strongly enhance the near-field at their plasmonic resonance. However, due to intrinsic nonlocality of the dielectric response of the metals along with their inherent loss, the achievable field enhancement has an ultimate constraint. In this paper we demonstrate that combining plasmonic resonance enhanc…
Electromagnetic absorbers have drawn increasing attention in many areas. A series of plasmonic and metamaterial structures can work as efficient narrow band absorbers due to the excitation of plasmonic or photonic resonances, providing a great potential for applications in designing selective thermal emitters, bio-sensing, etc. In other applications such as solar energy harvesting and photonic detection, the bandwidth of light absorbers is required to be quite broad. Under such a background, a variety of mechanisms of broadband/multiband absorption have been proposed, such as mixing multiple r…
Periodic arrays of metallic nanoparticles may sustain Surface Lattice Resonances (SLRs), which are collective resonances associated with the diffractive coupling of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances (LSPRs). By investigating a series of arrays with varying number of particles, we traced the evolution of SLRs to its origins. Polarization resolved extinction spectra of arrays formed by a few nanoparticles were measured, and found to be in very good agreement with calculations based on a coupled dipole model. Finite size effects on the optical properties of the arrays are observed, and our res…
Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomers originating from the interference of a spectrally broad superradiant mode and a discrete subradiant mode is under intensive recent investigations due to numerous potential applications. In this regard, development of experimental means to understand and control the complex Fano interference process and to modulate the resulting asymmetric Fano spectral line shape is highly sought after. Here we present a polarization Mueller matrix measurement and inverse analysis approach for quantitative understanding and interpretation of the complex interference proces…
Resonant metasurfaces are devices composed of nanostructured sub-wavelength scatterers that generate narrow optical resonances, enabling applications in filtering, nonlinear optics, and molecular fingerprinting. It is highly desirable for these applications to incorporate such devices with multiple, high-quality-factor resonances; however, it can be challenging to obtain more than a pair of narrow resonances in a single plasmonic surface. Here, we demonstrate a multi-resonant metasurface that operates by extending the functionality of surface lattice resonances, which are the collective respon…
We demonstrate an electrically controlled coherent random lasing with silver nano-particles dispersed in a dye-doped nematic liquid crystal (NLC), in which external electric field dependent emission intensity and frequency-splitting are recorded. A modified rate equation model is proposed to interpret the observed coherent lasing, which is a manifestation of double enhancements, caused by the plasmon-polariton near-fields of Ag particles, on the population inversion of laser dye molecules and the optical energy density of lasing modes. The noticeable quenching of lasing resonances in a weak ap…
