We elaborate on existing notions of contact geometry and Poisson geometry as applied to the classical ideal gas. Specifically we observe that it is possible to describe its dynamics using a 3-dimensional contact submanifold of the standard 5-dimensional contact manifold used in the literature. This reflects the fact that the internal energy of the ideal gas depends exclusively on its temperature. We also present a Poisson algebra of thermodynamic operators for a quantum-like description of the classical ideal gas. The central element of this Poisson algebra is proportional to Boltzmann's constant. A Hilbert space of states is identified and a system of wave equations governing the wavefunction is found. Expectation values for the operators representing pressure, volume and temperature are found to satisfy the classical equations of state.
By introducing an integration factor to the differential one-form of contact dynamics, equations of motion are derived variationally, and contact Poisson bracket and contact Lagrangian are formulated. Discrete symplectic integrator, named hybrid leap-frog method, is found to be a numerical solver of equations of motion for contact dissipative systems.
We investigate the nonlinear stability of the superposition of a viscous contact wave and two rarefaction waves for one-dimensional bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system, which can be used to describe the transportation of charged particles under the additional electrostatic potential force. Based on a new micro-macro type decomposition around the local Maxwellian related to the bipolar VPB system in our previous work [26], we prove that the superposition of a viscous contact wave and two rarefaction waves is time-asymptotically stable to 1D bipolar VPB system under some smallness cond…
We introduce a PDE-based node-to-element contact formulation as an alternative to classical, purely geometrical formulations. It is challenging to devise solutions to nonsmooth contact problem with continuous gap using finite element discretizations. We herein achieve this objective by constructing an approximate distance function (ADF) to the boundaries of solid objects, and in doing so, also obtain universal uniqueness of contact detection. Unilateral constraints are implemented using a mixed model combining the screened Poisson equation and a force element, which has the topology of a conti…
The formulation of covariant brackets on the space of solutions to a variational problem is analyzed in the framework of contact geometry. It is argued that the Poisson algebra on the space of functionals on fields should be read as a Poisson subalgebra within an algebra of functions equipped with a Jacobi bracket on a suitable contact manifold.
BRST complexes are differential graded Poisson algebras. They are associated to a coisotropic ideal $J$ of a Poisson algebra $P$ and provide a description of the Poisson algebra $(P/J)^J$ as their cohomology in degree zero. Using the notion of stable equivalence introduced by Felder and Kazhdan, we prove that any two BRST complexes associated to the same coisotropic ideal are quasi-isomorphic in the case $P = \mathbb{R}[V]$ where $V$ is a finite-dimensional symplectic vector space and the bracket on $P$ is induced by the symplectic structure on $V$. As a corollary, the cohomology of the BRST c…
We present an approach to Jacobi and contact geometry that makes many facts, presented in the literature in an overcomplicated way, much more natural and clear. The key concepts are Kirillov manifolds and linear Kirillov structures, i.e., homogeneous Poisson manifolds and, respectively, homogeneous linear Poisson manifolds. The difference with the existing literature is that the homogeneity of the Poisson structure is related to a principal ${\rm GL}(1,{\mathbb R})$-bundle structure on the manifold and not just to a vector field. This allows for working with Jacobi bundle structures on nontriv…
We study bosons on the real line in a Poisson random potential (Luttinger--Sy model) with contact interaction in the thermodynamic limit at absolute zero temperature. We prove that generalized Bose--Einstein condensation (BEC) occurs almost surely if the intensity $ν_N$ of the Poisson potential satisfies $[\ln (N)]^4/N^{1 - 2η} \ll ν_N \lesssim 1$ for arbitrary $0 < η\leq 1/3$. We also show that the contact interaction alters the type of condensation, going from a type-I BEC to a type-III BEC as the strength of this interaction is increased. Furthermore, for sufficiently strong contact interac…
We consider wave propagation in a complex structure coupled to a finite number $N$ of scattering channels, such as chaotic cavities or quantum dots with external leads. Temporal aspects of the scattering process are analysed through the concept of time delays, related to the energy (or frequency) derivative of the scattering matrix $\mathcal{S}$. We develop a random matrix approach to study the statistical properties of the symmetrised Wigner-Smith time-delay matrix $\mathcal{Q}_s=-\mathrm{i}\hbar\,\mathcal{S}^{-1/2}\big(\partial_\varepsilon\mathcal{S}\big)\,\mathcal{S}^{-1/2}$, and obtain the…
The incompressibility constraint for fluid flow was imposed by Lagrange in the so-called Lagrangian variable description using his method of multipliers in the Lagrangian (variational) formulation. An alternative is the imposition of incompressibility in the Eulerian variable description by a generalization of Dirac's constraint method using noncanonical Poisson brackets. Here it is shown how to impose the incompressibility constraint using Dirac's method in terms of both the canonical Poisson brackets in the Lagrangian variable description and the noncanonical Poisson brackets in the Eulerian…
