By analysing a sample of galaxies selected from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) to contain more than 2.5 times their expected HI content based on their optical properties, we investigate what drives these HI eXtreme (HIX) galaxies to be so HI-rich. We model the HI kinematics with the Tilted Ring Fitting Code TiRiFiC and compare the observed HIX galaxies to a control sample of galaxies from HIPASS as well as simulated galaxies built with the semi-analytic model Dark Sage. We find that (1) HI discs in HIX galaxies are more likely to be warped and more likely to host HI arms and tails than in the control galaxies, (2) the average HI and average stellar column density of HIX galaxies is comparable to the control sample, (3) HIX galaxies have higher HI and baryonic specific angular momenta than control galaxies, (4) most HIX galaxies live in higher-spin haloes than most control galaxies. These results suggest that HIX galaxies are HI-rich because they can support more HI against gravitational instability due to their high specific angular momentum. The majority of the HIX galaxies inherits their high specific angular momentum from their halo. The HI content of HIX galaxies might be further increased by gas-rich minor mergers. This paper is based on data obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) through the large program C 2705.
This paper presents the analysis of optical integral field spectra for the HI eXtreme (HIX) galaxy sample. HIX galaxies host at least 2.5 times more atomic gas (HI) than expected from their optical R-band luminosity. Previous examination of their star formation activity and HI kinematics suggested that these galaxies stabilise their large HI discs (radii up to 94 kpc) against star formation due to their higher than average baryonic specific angular momentum. A comparison to semi-analytic models further showed that the elevated baryonic specific angular momentum is inherited from the high spin …
We present the HI eXtreme (HIX) galaxy survey targeting some of the most HI rich galaxies in the southern hemisphere. The 13 HIX galaxies have been selected to host the most massive HI discs at a given stellar luminosity. We compare these galaxies to a control sample of average galaxies detected in the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS, Barnes et al. 2001). As the control sample is matched in stellar luminosity, we find that the stellar properties of HIX galaxies are similar to the control sample. Furthermore, the specific star formation rate and optical morphology do not differ between HIX and…
Despite numerous efforts, it is still unclear whether lenticular galaxies (S0s) evolve from spirals whose star formation was suppressed, or formed trough mergers or disk instabilities. In this paper we present a pilot study of 21 S0 galaxies in extreme environments (field and cluster), and compare their spatially-resolved kinematics and global stellar populations. Our aim is to identify whether there are different mechanisms that form S0s in different environments. Our results show that the kinematics of S0 galaxies in field and cluster are, indeed, different. Lenticulars in the cluster are mo…
We present and discuss the properties of an ionized component with extreme kinematics in an off-nuclear HII region located at 0.8 - 1.0 kpc from the nucleus of SDSS J143245.98+404300.3, recently reported in Rodriguez del Pino et al. (2019). The high-velocity gas component is identified by the detection of very broad emission wings in the Halpha line, with Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) > 850-1000 kms-1. Such gas kinematics are outstandingly high compared to other HII regions in local galaxies and similar to those reported in some star-forming clumps of galaxies at redshift around 2. The spa…
The extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies analyzed in a previous paper have large star-forming regions with a metallicity lower than the rest of the galaxy. Such a chemical inhomogeneity reveals the external origin of the metal-poor gas fueling star formation, possibly indicating accretion from the cosmic web. This paper studies the kinematic properties of the ionized gas in these galaxies. Most XMPs have rotation velocity around a few tens of km/s. The star-forming regions appear to move coherently. The velocity is constant within each region, and the velocity dispersion sometimes increases wit…

本研究利用 JAM 建模 JWST 高分辨率 NIRSpec 恒星运动学,测量 8 个超大质量星系的中心黑洞质量,发现其增长具有高度随机性,并填补了极端质量标度关系的空白。
Modern galaxy formation theory suggests that the misalignment between stellar and gaseous components usually results from an external gas accretion and/or interaction with other galaxies. The extreme case of the kinematic misalignment is demonstrated by so-called galaxies with counterrotation that possess two distinct components rotating in opposite directions with respect to each other. We provide an in-deep analysis of galaxies with counterrotation from IllustrisTNG100 cosmological simulations. We have found $25$ galaxies with substantial stellar counterrotation in the stellar mass range of …
We present and discuss results from the first spatially resolved kinematic study of ram-pressure stripping of a massive late-type galaxy at intermediate redshifts. Our target, the spectacular "jellyfish" galaxy A1758N\_JFG1, was previously identified as a fast-moving member of the equal-mass merger A1758N ($z=0.28$) with a star-formation rate of 48 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, far above the galaxy main sequence. IFU data obtained by us unambiguously confirm ram-pressure stripping as the physical mechanism driving the optical morphology and high star-formation rate of this system by revealing extended …
This paper presents a spatially-resolved kinematic study of the jellyfish galaxy JO201, one of the most spectacular cases of ram-pressure stripping (RPS) in the GASP (GAs Stripping Phenomena in Galaxies with MUSE) survey. By studying the environment of JO201, we find that it is moving through the dense intra-cluster medium of Abell 85 at supersonic speeds along our line of sight, and that it is likely accompanied by a small group of galaxies. Given the density of the intra-cluster medium and the galaxy's mass, projected position and velocity within the cluster, we estimate that JO201 must so f…
We aim to reveal the structure and kinematics of the Outer-Scutum-Centaurus (OSC) arm located on the far side of the Milky Way through very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) astrometry using KaVA, which is composed of KVN (Korean VLBI Network) and VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). We report the proper motion of a 22 GHz H$_{2}$O maser source, which is associated with the star-forming region G034.84$-$00.95, to be ($μ_α \rm{cos}δ$, $μ_δ$) = ($-$1.61$\pm$0.18, $-$4.29$\pm$0.16) mas yr$^{-1}$ in equatorial coordinates (J2000). We estimate the 2D kinematic distance to the source to be…
We present MUSE observations of ESO137-001, a spiral galaxy infalling towards the center of the massive Norma cluster at z~0.0162. During the high-velocity encounter of ESO137-001 with the intracluster medium, a dramatic ram-pressure stripping event gives rise to an extended gaseous tail, traced by our MUSE observations to >30 kpc from the galaxy center. By studying the H-alpha surface brightness and kinematics in tandem with the stellar velocity field, we conclude that ram pressure has completely removed the interstellar medium from the outer disk, while the primary tail is still fed by gas f…
Context. We report the discovery of VVV-CL160, a new nearby globular cluster (GC) with extreme kinematics, located in the Galactic plane at $l = 10.1477$ deg, $b = 0.2999$ deg. Aims. We aim to characterize the physical properties of this new GC and place it in the context of the Milky Way, exploring its possible connection with the known GC NGC 6544 and with the Hrid halo stream. Methods. VVV-CL160 was originally detected in the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) survey. We use the proper motions (PMs) from the updated VVV Infrared Astrometric Catalog (VIRAC2) to select GC members and mak…
We use radial velocities from spectra of giants obtained with the WIYN telescope, coupled with existing chemical abundance measurements of Na and O for the same stars, to probe the presence of kinematic differences among the multiple populations of the globular cluster (GC) M13. To characterise the kinematics of various chemical subsamples, we introduce a method using Bayesian inference along with an MCMC algorithm to fit a six-parameter kinematic model (including rotation) to these subsamples. We find that the so-called "extreme" population (Na-enhanced and extremely O-depleted) exhibits fast…
By clearing neutral gas away from a young starburst, superwinds may regulate the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons from star-forming galaxies. However, models predict that superwinds may not launch in the most extreme, compact starbursts. We explore the role of outflows in generating low optical depths in the Green Peas (GPs), the only known star-forming population with several confirmed and candidate LyC-leaking galaxies. With Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra of 25 low-redshift GPs, including new observations of 13 of the most highly ionized GPs, we compare the kinematics of UV absorpt…
We present near-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 22 Extreme Emission Line Galaxies at redshifts 1.3 < z < 2.3, confirming that these are low-mass (M* = 10^8 - 10^9 M_sun) galaxies undergoing intense starburst episodes (M*/SFR ~ 10-100 Myr). The sample is selected by [O III] or Hα emission line flux and equivalent width using near-infrared grism spectroscopy from the 3D-HST survey. High-resolution NIR spectroscopy is obtained with LBT/LUCI and VLT/X-SHOOTER. The [O III]/Hβ line ratio is high (> 5) and [N II]/Hα is always significantly below unity, which suggests a low gas-phase metallicity.…
The central molecular zone (CMZ) hosts some of the most massive and dense molecular clouds and star clusters in the Galaxy, offering an important window into star formation under extreme conditions. Star formation in this extreme environment may be closely linked to the 3-D distribution and orbital dynamics of the gas. Here I discuss how our new, accurate description of the $\{l,b,v\}$ structure of the CMZ is helping to constrain its 3-D geometry. I also present the discovery of a highly-regular, corrugated velocity field located just upstream from the dust ridge molecular clouds (which includ…
Black hole feedback is now a standard component of galaxy formation models. These models predict that the impact of black hole activity on its host galaxy likely peaked at z=2-3, the epoch of strongest star formation activity and black hole accretion activity in the Universe. We used XShooter on the Very Large Telescope to measure rest-frame optical spectra of four z~2.5 extremely red quasars with infrared luminosities ~10^47 erg/sec. We present the discovery of very broad (full width at half max= 2600-5000 km/sec), strongly blue-shifted (by up to 1500 km/sec) [OIII]5007A emission lines in the…
We report the detection of a non-corotating gas component in a bright unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, hosting a compact starburst. ALMA 0.17 and 0.09 arcsec resolution observations of [CII] emission clearly demonstrate that the gas kinematics is characterized by an ordered rotation. After subtracting the best-fit model of a rotating disk, we kinematically identify two residual components in the channel maps. Both observing simulations and analysis of dirty images confirm that these two subcomponents are not artificially created by noise fluctuations and beam deconvoluti…
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). XXXV. First Kinematical Clues of Overly-Massive Dark Matter Halos in Several Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We report the discovery of star formation activity in perhaps the most distant molecular cloud in the extreme outer galaxy. We performed deep near infrared imaging with the Subaru 8.2 m telescope, and found two young embedded clusters at two CO peaks of Digel Cloud 1 at the kinematic distance of D = 16 kpc (Galactocentric radius RG = 22 kpc). We identified 18 and 45 cluster members in the two peaks, and the estimated stellar density are ~ 5 and ~ 3 pc^-2, respectively. The observed K-band luminosity function suggests that the age of the clusters is less than 1 Myr and also the distance to the …

We report new wide-field (~ 4 x 4 square arcmin) MUSE observations of the Blue Infalling Group (BIG), a compact group of galaxies located at a projected distance of ~ 150 kpc from the X-Ray centre of the A1367 cluster at z = 0.021. Our MUSE observations map in detail the extended ionized gas, primarily traced by H$α$ emission, in between the members of the group. The gas morphology and its kinematics appear consistent with a tidal origin due to galaxy encounters, as also supported by the disturbed kinematics visible in one of the group members and the presence of tidal dwarf systems. A diffuse…
We analyse a set of very metal-poor stars for which accurate chemical abundances have been obtained as part of the ESO Large Program "First stars" in the light of the Gaia DR2 data. The kinematics and orbital properties of the stars in the sample show they probably belong to the thick disc, partially heated to halo kinematics, and to the accreted Nissen & Schuster-Gaia Sausage-Enceladus satellite. The continuity of these properties with stars at both higher ($\rm [Fe/H]>-2$) and lower metallicities ($\rm [Fe/H]<-4.$) suggests that the Galaxy at $\rm [Fe/H] \lesssim -0.5$ and down to at least $…
We report the discovery of the molecular cloud whose kinematic distance is the largest in the Galaxy at the present moment, named G213.042$+$0.003, at $l =$ 213.042$^\circ$ and $b =$ 0.003$^\circ$ in the $^{12}$CO($J =$ 1-0) line using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope and a multi-beam receiver BEARS. This molecular cloud is located at the heliocentric distance of 21$_{-7}^{+12}$ kpc and Galactocentric distance of 29$_{-7}^{+12}$ kpc, which are estimated as the kinematic distances with the Galactic parameters obtained by Reid et al. (2014, ApJ, 783, 130). Its major and minor diameters and line width…
The JWST Ultramassive Galaxy Sample -- I. Overview, Photometry, and Stellar Kinematics: Selecting Optimal Template Subsets via Non-Negative Matrix Factorization
University of Oxford(牛津大学);University of Michigan(密歇根大学);Space Telescope Science Institute(太空望远镜科学研究所)
We investigate the resolved kinematics of the molecular gas, as traced by ALMA in CO (2-1), of 25 cluster member galaxies across three different clusters at a redshift of $z\sim1.6$. This is the first large-scale analysis of the molecular gas kinematics of cluster galaxies at this redshift. By separately estimating the rotation curve of the approaching and receding side of each galaxy via kinematic modeling, we quantify the difference in total circular velocity to characterize the overall kinematic asymmetry of each galaxy. 3/14 of the galaxies in our sample that we are able to model have simi…
Recent spectroscopic explorations of large Galactic stellar samples stars have revealed the existence of red giants with [$α$/Fe] ratios that are anomalously high, given their relatively young ages. We revisit the GALAH DR3 survey to look for both dwarfs and giants with extreme [$α$/Fe] ratios, that is, the upper 1% in the [$α$/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane over the range in [Fe/H] between -1.1 and +0.4 dex. We refer to these outliers as "ex$α$fe" stars. We used the GALAH DR3 data and their value-added catalog to trace the properties (abundances, masses, ages, and kinematics) of the ex$α$fe stars. We inves…
The kinematic characterization of different galaxy populations is a key observational input to distinguish between different galaxy evolutionary scenarios, since it helps to determine the number ratio of rotating disks to mergers at different cosmic epochs. Local (U)LIRGs offer a unique opportunity to study at high linear resolution and S/N extreme star forming events and compare them with those observed at high-z. We obtained Very Large Telescope (VLT) VIMOS optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data of a sample of 38 (U)LIRGs. The `unweighted' and `weighted' {kinemetry}-based methods are…
We use high quality VLT/MUSE data to study the kinematics and the ionized gas properties of Haro 11, a well known starburst merger system and the closest confirmed Lyman continuum leaking galaxy. We present results from integrated line maps, and from maps in three velocity bins comprising the blueshifted, systemic and redshifted emission. The kinematic analysis reveals complex velocities resulting from the interplay of virial motions and momentum feedback. Star formation happens intensively in three compact knots (knots A, B and C), but one, knot C, dominates the energy released in supernovae.…
The SPT0311-58 system at z=6.900 is an extremely massive structure within the reionization epoch, and offers a chance to understand the formation of galaxies in an extreme peak in the primordial density field. We present 70mas Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the dust continuum and CII 158um emission in the central pair of galaxies and reach physical resolution ~100-350pc, among the most detailed views of any reionization-era system to date. The observations resolve the source into at least a dozen kiloparsec-size clumps. The global kinematics and high turbulent vel…
Different processes have been proposed to explain the formation of S0s, including mergers, disc instabilities and quenched spirals. These processes are expected to dominate in different environments, and thus leave characteristic footprints in the kinematics and stellar populations of the individual components within the galaxies. New techniques enable us to cleanly disentangle the kinematics and stellar populations of these components in IFU observations. In this paper, we use buddi to spectroscopically extract the light from the bulge, disc and lens components within a sample of 8 S0 galaxie…
We present the first results from the BAaDE (Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamic Evolution) survey. Though only a subset of the complete survey ($\sim$2700 out of $\sim$20000 final sources), our data comprise the largest radio kinematic survey to date of stellar SiO masers observed toward the Galactic bulge and plane from $-15^\circ < l < +12^\circ$ and $-6^\circ < b < +6^\circ$. Our sources include a substantial number of line-of-sight (LoS) velocities in high extinction regions within $\pm 1^\circ$ of the Galactic plane. When matched with 2MASS photometry, our radio-detected sample lies significan…

In this paper we analyze Very Large Array (VLA) telescope and Green Bank Telescope (GBT) atomic hydrogen (HI) data for the LITTLE THINGS(1) blue compact dwarf galaxy IC 10. The VLA data allow us to study the detailed HI kinematics and morphology of IC 10 at high resolution while the GBT data allow us to search the surrounding area at high sensitivity for tenuous HI. IC 10's HI appears highly disturbed in both the VLA and GBT HI maps with a kinematically distinct northern HI extension, a kinematically distinct southern plume, and several spurs in the VLA data that do not follow the general kine…
Owing to their shallow stellar potential, dwarf galaxies possess thick gas disks, which makes them good candidates for studies of the galactic vertical kinematical structure. We present 21 cm line observations of the isolated nearby dwarf irregular galaxy UGCA 105, taken with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), and analyse the geometry of its neutral hydrogen (HI) disk and its kinematics. The galaxy shows a fragmented HI distribution. It is more extended than the optical disk, and hence allows one to determine its kinematics out to very large galacto-centric distances. The HI kine…
We present new Fabry-Perot observations for a sample of 42 galaxies located in twelve compact groups of galaxies: HCG 1, HCG 14, HCG 25, HCG 44, HCG 53, HCG 57, HCG 61, HCG 69, HCG 93, VV 304, LGG 455 and Arp 314. From the 42 observed galaxies, a total of 26 objects are spiral galaxies, which range from Sa to Im morphological types. The remaining 16 objects are E, S0 and S0a galaxies. Using these observations, we have derived velocity maps, monochromatic and velocity dispersion maps for 24 galaxies, where 18 are spiral, three are S0a, two are S0 and one is an Im galaxy. From the 24 velocity fi…
We present completed observations of the NGC 7448 galaxy group and background volume as part of the blind neutral hydrogen Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES). Our observations cover a region spanning 5x4 degrees, over a redshift range of approximately -2,000 < cz < 20,000 km/s. A total of 334 objects are detected, mostly in three overdensities at cz $\sim$7,500, cz $\sim$9,600 and cz $\sim$ 11,400 km/s. The galaxy density is extremely high (15 per square degree) and many ($\sim$24%) show signs of extended HI emission, including some features as much as 800 kpc in projected length. We des…
In the context of the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with Muse (GASP) survey, we present the characterization of JO204, a jellyfish galaxy in A957, a relatively low-mass cluster with $M=4.4 \times10^{14}M_\odot$. This galaxy shows a tail of ionized gas that extends up to 30 kpc from the main body in the opposite direction of the cluster center. No gas emission is detected in the galaxy outer disk, suggesting that gas stripping is proceeding outside-in. The stellar component is distributed as a regular disk galaxy; the stellar kinematics shows a symmetric rotation curve with a maximum radi…
Compact Obscured Nuclei (CONs) account for a significant fraction of the population of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs). These galaxy nuclei are compact, with radii of 10-100~pc, with large optical depths at submm and far-infrared wavelengths, and characterized by vibrationally excited HCN emission. It is not known what powers the large luminosities of the CON host galaxies because of the extreme optical depths towards their nuclei. CONs represent an extreme phase of nuclear growth, hiding either a rapidly accreting supermassive black hole or an abnormal mode of …
Context. The formation and evolution of galaxies appear linked to the growth of supermassive black holes, as evidenced by empirical scaling relations in nearby galaxies. Understanding this co-evolution over cosmic time requires the revelation of the dynamical state of galaxies and the measurement of the mass of their central black holes (MBH) at a range of cosmic distances. Bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are ideal for this purpose. Aims. The High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph (HARMONI), the first light integral-field spectrograph for …
Studying the stellar kinematics of galaxies is a key tool in the reconstruction of their evolution. However, the current measurements of the stellar kinematics are complicated by several factors, including dust extinction and the presence of multiple stellar populations. We use integral field spectroscopic data of four galaxies from the TIMER survey to explore and compare the kinematics measured in different spectral regions that are sensitive to distinct stellar populations. We derive the line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion of both a young (<2 Gyr) and an old stellar population fro…
We present multi-frequency (1-8 GHz) VLA data, combined with VIMOS IFU data and HST imaging, of a z=0.085 radio-quiet type 2 quasar (with L(1.4GHz)~5e23 W/Hz and L(AGN)~2e45 erg/s). Due to the morphology of its emission-line region, the target (J1430+1339) has been referred to as the Teacup AGN in the literature. We identify "bubbles" of radio emission that are extended ~10-12 kpc to both the east and west of the nucleus. The edge of the brighter eastern bubble is co-spatial with an arc of luminous ionized gas. We also show that the Teacup AGN hosts a compact radio structure, located ~0.8 kpc …
We have observed three luminous infrared galaxy systems (LIRGS) which are pairs of interacting galaxies, with the Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system (GH$α$FaS) mounted on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, and combined the observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of these systems in CO emission to compare the physical properties of the star formation regions and the molecular gas clouds, and specifically the internal kinematics of the star forming regions. We identified 88 star forming regions in the H$α$ emission data-cub…
We consider stars with radial velocities, proper motions, and distance estimates from the RAVE4 catalogue. Based on a sample of more than 145000 stars at distances $r<0.5$~kpc, we have found the following kinematic parameters: (U,V,W)_\odot=(9.12, 20.80, 7.66)\pm(0.10, 0.10, 0.08) km s^{-1}, Ω_0=28.71\pm0.63 km s^{-1} kpc^{-1}, and Ω'_0=-4.28\pm0.11 km s^{-1} kpc^{-2}. This gives the linear rotation velocity V_0=230\pm12 km s^{-1} (for the adopted R_0= 8.0\pm0.4 kpc) and the Oort constants A=17.12\pm0.45 km s^{-1} kpc^{-1} and B=-11.60\pm0.77 km s^{-1} kpc^{-1}. The 2D velocity distributions i…
The filamentary infrared dark cloud L1287 is actively forming a dense cluster of low-mass YSOs at its inner $\sim$0.1 pc region. To help understand the origin of this low-mass YSO cluster, the present work aims at resolving the gas structures and kinematics. We have performed $\sim$1$"$ angular resolution ($\sim$930 AU) SMA observations at $\sim$1.3 mm. From a $\sim$2$"$ resolution 1.3 mm continuum image we identified six dense cores, namely SMA1-6 with masses in the range of $\sim0.4-4$ M$_\odot$. From a $\sim$1$"$ resolution 1.3 mm continuum image, we find a high fragmentation level, with 14…
We study the kinematics and scaling relations of a sample of 43 giant spiral galaxies that have stellar masses exceeding $10^{11}$ $M_\odot$ and optical discs up to 80 kpc in radius. We use a hybrid 3D-1D approach to fit 3D kinematic models to long-slit observations of the H$α$-[NII] emission lines and we obtain robust rotation curves of these massive systems. We find that all galaxies in our sample seem to reach a flat part of the rotation curve within the outermost optical radius. We use the derived kinematics to study the high-mass end of the two most important scaling relations for spiral …
We present the results of a kinematic study of planetary nebulae in the extreme outskirts of two spiral galaxies, M83 (NGC 5236) and M94 (NGC 4736). We find that in the inner regions of the galaxies, the vertical velocity dispersion (sigma_z) falls off exponentially with the light, as expected for a constant mass-to-light ratio, constant thickness disk. However, starting at four optical scale lengths, sigma_z asymptotes out at roughly 20 km/s. Our analysis finds evidence for significant flaring in the outer regions as well, especially in M94. These observations are in excellent agreement with …
We present the results of a detailed study of the central part of the Seyfert galaxy Mkn 938. Observational data were obtained with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences using integral-field spectrograph MPFS and a scanning Fabry--Perot interferometer. Mkn 938 is interesting for being a result of a merger of two gas-rich galaxies, and we observe the final stage of this interaction accompanied with an extremely powerful burst of star formation and nuclear activity. Our analysis of the kinematics of gas and stars revealed the presence of ga…
The hypervelocity star (HVS) survey conducted at the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) identified 42 B-type stars in the Galactic halo whose radial velocity in the Galactic rest-frame exceeds $+275\,$km$\,$s${}^{-1}$. In order to unravel the nature and origin of those high-velocity outliers, their complete six-dimensional phase space information is needed. To this end, we complemented positions and proper motions from the second data release of {\it Gaia} with revised radial velocities and spectrophotometric distances that are based on a reanalysis of the available MMT spectra of 40 objects usin…
We present new HI interferometric observations of the gas-rich ultra-diffuse galaxy AGC 114905, which previous work, based on low-resolution data, identified as an outlier of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. The new observations, at a spatial resolution $\sim 2.5$ times higher than before, reveal a regular HI disc rotating at about 23 km/s. Our kinematic parameters, recovered with a robust 3D kinematic modelling fitting technique, show that the flat part of the rotation curve is reached. Intriguingly, the rotation curve can be explained almost entirely by the baryonic mass distribution alon…
We explore how observations relate to the physical properties of the emitting galaxies by post-processing a pair of merging $z\sim2$ galaxies from the cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation NewHorizon using LCARS (Light from Cloudy Added to RAMSES) to encode the physical properties of the simulated galaxy into H$α$ emission line. By carrying out mock observations and analysis on these data cubes we ascertain which physical properties of the galaxy will be recoverable with the HARMONI spectrograph on the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). We are able to estimate the galaxy's star format…
We present a study into the capabilities of integrated and spatially resolved integral field spectroscopy of galaxies at z=2-4 with the future HARMONI spectrograph for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) using the simulation pipeline, HSIM. We focus particularly on the instrument's capabilities in stellar absorption line integral field spectroscopy, which will allow us to study the stellar kinematics and stellar population characteristics. Such measurements for star-forming and passive galaxies around the peak star formation era will provide a critical insight into the star formatio…
The gravitational field of Spiral galaxies is well traced by their rotation curves. Only recently it has become of extreme interest that the latter form a family ruled by two parameters of the {\it luminous} component: the disk length-scale $R_D$ and the magnitude $M_I$. This evidence is so strong and consequential that it must be taken as the starting point for the investigation on the issue of the dark matter in galaxies. The emerging fact is that structural quantities deeply rooted in the luminous components, like the disk length scales are found to tightly correlate with structural quantit…
