The coloron, a massive version of the gluon present in gauge extensions of QCD, has been searched for at the LHC as a dijet or top quark pair resonance. We point out that in the Renormalizable Coloron Model (ReCoM) with a minimal field content to break the gauge symmetry, a color-octet scalar and a singlet scalar are naturally lighter than the coloron because they are pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons. Consequently, the coloron may predominantly decay into scalar pairs, leading to novel signatures at the LHC. When the color-octet scalar is lighter than the singlet, or when the singlet mass is above roughly 1 TeV, the signatures consist of multi-jet resonances of multiplicity up to 12, including topologies with multi-prong jet substructure, slightly displaced vertices, and sometimes a top quark pair. When the singlet is the lightest ReCoM boson and lighter than about 1 TeV, its main decays ($W^+W^-$, $γZ$, $ZZ$) arise at three loops. The LHC signatures then involve two or four boosted electroweak bosons, often originating from highly displaced vertices, plus one or two pairs of prompt jets or top quarks.
The renormalizable coloron model, which has previously been shown in the literature to be consistent with a wide array of theoretical and precision electroweak constraints, includes a pair of spinless bosons (one scalar, one pseudoscalar). We show that either of them, or both together if they are degenerate, could be responsible for the diphoton resonance signal for which both CMS and ATLAS have seen evidence. Because either of these bosons would be produced and decay through loops of spectator fermions, the absence of signals in dijet, $t\bar{t}$, and electroweak boson pair channels is not a …
The renormalizable coloron model is built around a minimally extended color gauge group, which is spontaneously broken to QCD. The formalism introduces massive color-octet vector bosons (colorons), as well as several new scalars and fermions associated with the symmetry breaking sector. In this paper, we examine vacuum stability and triviality conditions within the context of the renormalizable coloron model up to a cutoff energy scale of 100~TeV, by computing the beta-functions of all relevant couplings and determining their running behavior as a function of the renormalization scale. We cons…
The renormalizable coloron model is the minimal extension of the standard model color sector, in which the color gauge group is enlarged to SU(3)_{1c} x SU(3)_{2c}. In this paper we discuss the constraints on this model derived from the requirements of vacuum stability, tree-level unitarity, electroweak precision measurements, and from LHC measurements of the properties of the observed Higgs-like scalar boson. The combination of these theoretical and experimental considerations strongly constrains the allowed parameter space. (Erratum appended, March 2014.)
The renormalizable coloron model constitutes the minimal extension of the standard model (SM) color sector to $SU(3)_{1c} \times SU(3)_{2c}$, with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the extended gauge group to the diagonal QCD facilitated by the renormalizable operators. It predicts the existence of the beyond the SM massive color-octet gauge bosons (colorons), colored and uncolored scalar degrees of freedom, as well as potential spectator fermions necessary for anomaly-cancelation purposes. Furthermore, keeping the ordinary chiral quark charge assignments under the extended color gauge grou…
Instead of the usual dijet decay, the coloron may mainly decay into its own "Higgs bosons", which subsequently decay into many jets. This is a general feature of the renormalizable coloron model, where the corresponding "Higgs bosons" are a color-octet $Θ$ and a color-singlet $ϕ_I$. In this paper, we perform a detailed collider study for the signature of $pp \rightarrow G' \rightarrow (Θ\rightarrow gg) (ϕ_I \rightarrow gg q\bar{q})$ with the coloron $G'$ as a six-jet resonance. For a light $ϕ_I$ below around 0.5 TeV, it may be boosted and behave as a four-prong fat jet. We also develop a jet-s…
This paper completes the study of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to massive color-octet vector boson production at the LHC and Tevatron. The massive color-octet vector bosons are generically referred to as colorons. Building on our previous calculation of quark-initiated coloron production at NLO, we use the pinch technique to investigate coloron production via gluon fusion. We demonstrate that this one-loop production amplitude is finite, and find that its numerical contribution to coloron production is typically four orders of magnitude smaller than the contribution from qua…
This talk discusses the possibility of new physics within the strong gauge interactions, specifically the idea of an extended color gauge group that is spontaneously broken to QCD. After a brief review of the literature, three of our recent pieces of work on coloron phenomenology are summarized. First, some key results on coloron production to NLO at hadron colliders are described. Next, a method of using associated production of colorons and weak vector bosons to better determine coloron couplings is discussed. Finally, a new model that naturally realizes flavor physics is reviewed.
In this paper we introduce a simple renormalizable model of an extended color gauge sector in which the third-generation quarks couple differently than the lighter quarks. In addition to a set of heavy color-octet vector bosons (colorons), the model also contains a set of heavy weak vector quarks. Mixing between the third-generation of quarks and the first two is naturally small, and occurs only through the (suppressed) mixing of all three generations with the heavy vector quarks. We discuss the constraints on this model arising from limits on flavor-changing neutral currents and from collider…
We investigate the prospects for the discovery of massive color-octet vector bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV. A phenomenological Lagrangian is adopted to evaluate the cross section of a pair of colored vector bosons (colorons, $\tildeρ$) decaying into four colored scalar resonances (hyper-pions, $\tildeπ$), which then decay into eight gluons. We include the dominant physics background from the production of $8g,7g1q, 6g2q$, and $5g3q$, and determine the masses of $\tildeπ$ and $\tildeρ$ where discovery is possible. For example, we find that a 5$σ$ signal can b…
We discuss the properties and LHC phenomenology of a potentially discoverable heavy scalar boson ($s$) that arises in the context of the renormalizable coloron model; the model also contains a light scalar, $h$, identifiable with the 125 GeV state discovered by the LHC. These two scalar mass eigenstates are admixtures of a weak doublet gauge eigenstate and a weak singlet gauge eigenstate. A previous study set exclusion limits on the heavy $s$ scalar, using the stability of the scalar potential, unitarity, electroweak precision tests, LHC searches for the 125 GeV Higgs; it also briefly discusse…
Ordinary technicolor and extended technicolor cannot produce the heavy top quark unaided. We demonstrate that a flavor-universal extension of the color interactions combined with an extended hypercharge sector that singles out the third generation can provide the necessary assistance. We discuss current experimental constraints and suggest how collider experiments can search for the predicted new heavy gauge bosons.
In this paper we study the phenomenology of color-octet and color-singlet scalars in the flavorful Top-Coloron model. We discuss the relevant production mechanisms at hadron colliders and the dominant decay modes, highlighting the most promising signatures for discovery, and derive bounds on the masses of the new scalars from LHC and Tevatron data. Of particular interest is the case in which color-octet scalars are pair produced and each decay to t cbar or tbar c, leading to a same-sign-dilepton final state. LHC data places a lower limit of 440 GeV on the octet mass in this scenario. The case …
We investigate the prospects for the discovery of massive hyper-gluons using data from the early runs of the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV and assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$. A phenomenological Lagrangian is adopted to evaluate the cross section of a pair of colored vector bosons (coloron, $\tildeρ$) decaying into four colored scalar resonances (hyper-pion, $\tildeπ$), which then decay into eight gluons. We include the dominant physics background from the production of $8g$, $7g1q$, $6g2q$, and $5g3q$. We find an abundance of signal events and that realis…
We consider the implications of an extended color group, $SU\left( 3\right) _I\times SU\left( 3\right) _{II}$, spontaneously broken to $SU\left( 3\right) _c$ at a TeV or lower scale, for the hadronic colliders. The associated massive color octet gauge bosons (the colorons) can enhance the $t \overline{t}$ pair production at the Tevatron collider. At the LHC, the colorons can be pair produced, each decaying to a $t\overline{t}$ pair. This gives rise to anomalous multi W production: a clear signature of physics beyond the Standard Model. We calculate the associated multijet and multilepton final…
We discuss the phenomenology of the lightest SU(3)_C singlet and non-singlet technihadrons in the Straw Man Model of low-scale technicolor (TCSM). The technihadrons are assumed to be those arising in topcolor--assisted technicolor models in which topcolor is broken by technifermion condensates. We improve upon the description of the color--singlet sector presented in our earlier paper introducing the TCSM (hep-ph/9903369). These improvements are most important for subprocess energies well below the masses of the technirho and techniomega, and, therefore, apply especially to e+e- colliders such…
Experiments at the LHC may yet discover a dijet resonance indicative of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. In this case, the question becomes: what BSM theories are consistent with the unexpected resonance? One possibility would be a spin-2 object called the colorphilic graviton--a spin-2 color-singlet particle which couples exclusively to the quark and gluon stress-energy tensors. We assess the possibility of this state's discovery in the dijet channel as an s-channel resonance, and report the regions of parameter space where colorphilic gravitons have not yet been excluded by LHC-13 da…
Hypothetical color-octet particles of spin 0, pair-produced at hadron colliders through their QCD coupling, may lead to final states involving three or four b jets. We analyze kinematic distributions of the 3b final state that differentiate the scalar octets from supersymmetric Higgs bosons. Studying the scalar sector that breaks an SU(3) \times SU(3) gauge symmetry down to the QCD gauge group, we find that the scalar octet is resonantly produced in pairs via a spin-1 octet (coloron). A scalar octet of mass in the 140 - 150 GeV range can explain the nonstandard shape of the b-jet transverse en…
We study the mass scales in the $SO(10)$ grand unified theory based on the following minimal Higgs representation content: adjoint $45_{\rm H}$, spinor $16_{\rm H}$ and complex vector $10_{\rm H}$, with higher dimensional operators on top of renormalizable interactions. We show that the consistency of the theory requires scalar $W$ and $Z$, scalar quark doublet and scalar gluon to lie below $ 10\, \rm TeV$ energy and potentially accessible even at the LHC. These signatures are intimately connected with the prediction of proton lifetime below $10^{35} {\rm yr}$, to be probed in the new generati…
Fermion dark matter (DM) interacting with the standard model through a Higgs portal requires non-renormalizable operators, signaling the presence of new mediator states at the electroweak scale. Collider signatures that involve the mediators are a powerful tool to experimentally probe the Higgs portal interactions, providing complementary information to strong constraints set by direct DM detection searches. Indirect detection experiments are less sensitive to this scenario. We investigate the collider reach for the mediators using three minimal renormalizable models as examples, and requiring…
We study a class of models in which the Higgs pair production is enhanced at hadron colliders by an extra neutral scalar. The scalar particle is produced by the gluon fusion via a loop of new colored particles, and decays into di-Higgs through its mixing with the Standard Model Higgs. Such a colored particle can be the top/bottom partner, such as in the dilaton model, or a colored scalar which can be triplet, sextet, octet, etc., called leptoquark, diquark, coloron, etc., respectively. We examine the experimental constraints from the latest Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, and discuss the fut…
We extend the standard model to include a weak-triplet and color-octet scalar. This `octo-triplet' field consists of three particles, two charged and one neutral, whose masses and renormalizable interactions depend only on two new parameters. The charged octo-triplet decay into a W boson and a gluon is suppressed by a loop factor and an accidental cancellation. Thus, the main decays of the charged octo-triplet may occur through higher-dimensional operators, mediated by a heavy vectorlike fermion, into quark pairs. For an octo-triplet mass below the t\bar{b} threshold, the decay into Wb\bar{b} …
Direct detection of and LHC search for the singlet fermion dark matter (SFDM) model with Higgs portal interaction are considered in a renormalizable model where the full Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry is imposed by introducing a singlet scalar messenger. In this model, direct detection is described by an effective operator m_q \bar{q} q \barχ χas usual, but the full amplitude for monojet + \not E_T involves two intermediate scalar propagators, which cannot be seen within the effective field theory (EFT) or in the simplified model without the full SM gauge symmetry. We derive the collider b…
We consider the simplest and most economic version among the proposed non-minimal supersymmetric models, in which the $μ$-parameter is promoted to a singlet superfield, whose all self-couplings are absent from the renormalizable superpotential. Such a particularly simple form of the renormalizable superpotential may be enforced by discrete $R$-symmetries which are extended to the gravity-induced non-renormalizable operators as well. We show explicitly that within the supergravity-mediated supersymmetry-breaking scenario, the potentially dangerous divergent tadpoles associated with the presence…
The problem of the origin of the mu parameter in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model can be solved by introducing singlet supermultiplets with non-renormalizable couplings to the ordinary Higgs supermultiplets. The Peccei-Quinn symmetry is broken at a scale which is the geometric mean between the weak scale and the Planck scale, yielding a mu term of the right order of magnitude and an invisible axion. These models also predict one or more singlet fermions which have electroweak-scale masses and suppressed couplings to MSSM states. I consider the case that such a singlet fermion, contain…
In this report we study how a light-scalar leptoquark could affect the Higgs boson production cross-section at the LHC collider. We construct the most general renormalizable and gauge invariant effective Lagrangian involving the standard model particles and a scalar, isoscalar leptoquark, η. The total cross-section for pp -> H+X is then calculated for different values of the unknown parameters λ_eta, m_eta and m_H.(Here λ_eta is the coupling associated with the Higgs-leptoquark interaction.) We find that if λ_eta is moderately large and m_eta is around a few hundred GeV, then the cross-section…
Mono-$X$ signatures are a powerful collider probe of the nature of dark matter. We show that mono-Higgs and mono-$Z$ may be key signatures of pseudo-scalar portal interactions between dark matter and the SM. We demonstrate this using a simple renormalizable version of the portal, with a Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model as electroweak symmetry breaking sector. Mono-$Z$ and mono-Higgs signatures in this scenario are of resonant type, which constitutes a novel type of dark matter signature at LHC.
Leptophilic interactions can only be observed at the LHC in four-lepton final states. If these interactions are mediated by a resonance in the di-leptonic channel with renormalizable couplings, the mediator must have spin 1. We study the LHC reach for such a vector boson allowing for arbitrary couplings. We find that only couplings to muons can be probed at the LHC because lepton flavor violating couplings are constrained by rare processes, couplings to electrons by LEP and the LHC is not sensitive to final states involving taus in this case. The ILC becomes then complementary to the LHC as it…
We study the scalar triplet extension of the standard model with a low cutoff, preventing large corrections to the quadratic masses that would otherwise worsen the hierarchy problem. We explore the reach of LISA to test the parameter space region of the scalar potential (not yet excluded by Higgs to diphoton measurements) in which the electroweak phase transition is strongly first-order and produces sizeable gravitational waves. We also demonstrate that the collider phenomenology of the model is drastically different from its renormalizable counterpart. We study the reach of the LHC in ongoing…
We comprehensively study all viable new-physics scenarios that resolve the muon $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly with only Standard Model singlet particles coupled to muons via renormalizable interactions. Since such models are only viable in the MeV -- TeV mass range and require sizable muon couplings, they predict abundant accelerator production through the same interaction that resolves the anomaly. We find that a combination of fixed-target (NA64$μ$, $M^3$), $B$-factory (BABAR, Belle II), and collider (LHC, muon collider) searches can cover nearly all viable singlets scenarios, independently of their dec…
Extensions of the MSSM often predict the existence of new fermions and their scalar superpartners which are vectorlike with respect to the standard model gauge group but may be chiral under additional gauge factors. In this paper we explore the production and decay of an important example, i.e., a heavy isosinglet charge -1/3 quark and its scalar partner, using the charge assignments of a 27-plet of E6 for illustration. We emphasize that, depending on the symmetries of the low energy theory, such exotic particles may decay by the mixing of the fermion with the d, s, or b quarks; may decay by l…
We examine the effects of the R parity odd renormalizable interactions on flavor changing rates and CP violation asymmetries in the production of fermion-antifermion pairs at $e^-- e^+$ leptonic colliders. The produced fermions may be leptons, down-quarks or up-quarks, and the center of mass energies may range from the Z-boson pole up to $ 1000$ GeV. Off the Z-boson pole, the flavor changing rates are controlled by tree level amplitudes and the CP asymmetries by interference terms between tree and loop level amplitudes. At the Z-boson pole, both observables involve loop amplitudes. The lepton …
The measure of the triple Higgs coupling is one of the major goals of the high-luminosity run of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) as well as the future colliders, either leptonic such as the International Linear Collider (ILC) or hadronic such as the 100 TeV Future Circular Collider in hadron-hadron mode (FCC-hh). We have recently proposed this observable as a test of neutrino mass generating mechanisms in a regime where heavy sterile neutrino masses are hard to be probed otherwise. We present in this article a study of the one-loop corrected triple Higgs coupling in the inverse seesaw …
We explore the collider prospects of neutrino non-standard interaction with a Standard Model (SM) gauge-singlet leptonic scalar $ϕ$ carrying two units of lepton-number-charge. These leptonic scalars are forbidden from interacting with the SM fermions at the renormalizable level and, if one allows for higher-dimensional operators, couple predominantly to SM neutrinos. For masses at or below the electroweak scale, $ϕ$ decays exclusively into neutrinos. Its characteristic production signature at hadron collider experiments like the LHC would be via the vector boson fusion process and leads to sam…
We examine the effect of the R parity odd renormalizable interactions on flavor non-diagonal rates and CP violation asymmetries in the production of slepton pairs at $e^- - e^+$ leptonic colliders, for center of mass energies spanning the interval from the Z-boson pole up to 1000 GeV. The lepton number violating interactions, associated with the lepton number violating coupling constants, are assumed to incorporate CP odd complex phases. The flavor changing rates are controlled by tree level amplitudes and quadratic products of different R parity violating coupling constants and the CP asymmet…
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has measured the Higgs boson couplings with the heavier particles of the Standard Model (SM), and they seem to lay on a single line as function of the particle mass, as predicted in the SM. However a complete test of this property must involve the lighter generations, and the coming measurements at LHC, or future colliders, may reveal hidden patterns associated with physics beyond the SM. In renormalizable multi-Higgs models, the Higgs-fermion couplings could still be linear, but they could lay on multiple lines. Then, the angle subtended by these lines, with re…
We propose a renormalizable model of a fermionic dark matter by introducing a gauge singlet Dirac fermion and a real singlet scalar. The bridges between the singlet sector and the standard model sector are only the singlet scalar interaction terms with the standard model Higgs field. The singlet fermion couples to the standard model particles through the mixing between the standard model Higgs and singlet scalar and is naturally a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP). The measured relic abundance can be explained by the singlet fermionic dark matter as the WIMP within this model. Collide…
The Affleck-Dine mechanism in its simplest form provides baryogenesis from the out-of-equilibrium evolution of a complex scalar field with a simple renormalizable potential. We show that such a model, supplemented by nonminimal coupling to gravity, can also provide inflation, consistent with Planck constraints, simultaneously with the generation of the baryon asymmetry. The predictions of the model include significant tensor-to-scalar ratio and possibly baryon isocurvature fluctuations. The reheating temperature is calculable, making the model fully predictive. We require color triplet scalars…
Collide…
We propose a renormalizable model for vector dark matter with extra U(1) gauge symmetry, which is broken by the VEV of a complex singlet scalar. When the singlet scalar has a quartic coupling to a heavy charged scalar, the resonance effect enhances the annihilation cross section of vector dark matter into two photons such that Fermi-gamma ray line at about 130 GeV is obtained. In the presence of a tiny mixing between the singlet scalar and the Standard Model Higgs doublet, the relic density is determined dominantly by WW/ZZ and two-photon channels near the resonance pole of the singlet scalar.…

Color-sextet scalars could have an array of possible couplings to the Standard Model beyond their well known renormalizable couplings to quark pairs. The next-largest couplings these scalars might enjoy have mass dimension six, and some include electroweak fields and can therefore produce highly distinctive signals at hadron colliders. Here we study the single production of color-sextet scalars in association with a hard lepton, which results from a dimension-six coupling to leptons in addition to quarks and gluons. We identify parameter space in which these scalars decay promptly and propose …
In this paper I review the possibility of TeV scale strings that may be detectable by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This possibility was investigated extensively in a series of phenomenological papers during 1984-1985 in connection with the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). The work was mainly based on a model independent systematic parametrization of scattering amplitudes and cross sections, for Standard Model particles, quarks and leptons, that were assumed to behave like strings, while gluons, photons, $W^{\pm},Z$ were taken as elementary. By using Veneziano type beta functions consi…
Many theories beyond the standard model (BSM) contain new CP-odd and CP-even neutral scalars $ϕ= \{A,H\}$, and new vector-like fermions ($ψ_{VL}$). The couplings of the CP-odd scalar $A$ to two standard model (SM) gauge bosons cannot occur from renormalizable operators in a CP-conserving sector, but can be induced at the quantum loop level. We compute these effective couplings at the 1-loop level induced by the SM fermions and vector-like fermions, present analytical expressions for them, and plot them numerically. Using the 8~TeV Large Hadron Collider (LHC) $γγ$, $τ^{+} τ^{-}$ and $t \bar t$ …
We study a minimal extension to the Standard Model with an additional real scalar triplet, $Σ$, and a single vector-like quark, $T$. This class of models appear naturally in extensions of the Littlest Higgs model that incorporate dark matter without the need of $T$-parity. We assume the limit that the triplet does not develop a vacuum expectation value and that all dimension five operators coupling the triplet to Standard Model fields and the vector-like quarks are characterized by the scale $Λ$ at which we expect new physics to arise. We introduce new non-renormalizable interactions between t…
The possibility of detecting double flavor violating top quark transitions at future colliders is explored in a model-independent manner using the effective Lagrangian approach through the $t \to u_iτμ$ ($u_i=u,c$) decays. A Yukawa sector that contemplates $SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1)$ invariants of up to dimension six is proposed and used to derive the most general flavor violating and CP violating $q_iq_jH$ and $l_il_jH$ vertices of renormalizable type. Low-energy data, on high precision measurements, and experimental limits are used to constraint the $tu_iH$ and $Hτμ$ vertices and then used to pre…
