We introduce a construction of symmetry-enriched topological orders on bipartite lattices in which two $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids defined on each sublattice are combined, and then anyons are condensed to reduce the topological order. By choosing different anyon condensate structures, one can vary the fractionalization pattern of the resulting spin liquid, some of which cannot be readily constructed from parton based approaches. We demonstrate the construction for $i$) a spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice where we construct a featureless state as well as intermediate states with topological order, $ii$) a nonsymmorphic lattice, and $iii$) lattices with magnetic translation symmetry. At last, we discuss constraints on non-chiral topological orders in a bosonic system under magnetic field.
Quantum information scrambling is the spread of local information into correlation throughout the entire quantum many-body system. This concept has become a central topic in different contexts. In this work, we restate the connection between anyon condensation and topological quantum information scrambling in quantum Hall interfaces. We consider the interface between the Abelian Halperin-330 state and the non-Abelian Read-Rezayi state. We verify explicitly that the interface can be fully gapped. This allows the transmutation of local pseudospin information carried by an Abelian anyon into topo…
We construct a lattice model of topological order (kagome quantum spin liquids) and solve it with unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A three-stage anyon condensation with two transitions from a $\mathbb Z_2\boxtimes\mathbb Z_2$ topological order to a $\mathbb Z_2$ topological order and eventually to a trivial symmetric phase is revealed. These results provide concrete examples of phase transitions between topological orders in quantum magnets. The designed quantum spin liquid model and its numerical solution offer a playground for further investigations on vestigial anyon condensation.
Although the mathematics of anyon condensation in topological phases has been studied intensively in recent years, a proof of its physical existence is tantamount to constructing an effective Hamiltonian theory. In this paper, we concretely establish the physical foundation of anyon condensation by building the effective Hamiltonian and the Hilbert space, in which we explicitly construct the vacuum of the condensed phase as the coherent states that are the eigenstates of the creation operators that create the condensate anyons. Along with this construction, which is analogous to Laughlin's con…
A topological order is a new quantum phase that is beyond Landau's symmetry-breaking paradigm. Its defining features include robust degenerate ground states, long-range entanglement and anyons. It was known that $R$- and $F$-matrices, which characterize the fusion-braiding properties of anyons, can be used to uniquely identify topological order. In this article, we explore an essential question: how can the $R$- and $F$-matrices be experimentally measured? By using quantum simulations based on a toric code model with boundaries and state-of-the-art technology, we show that the braidings, i.e. …
Instead of studying anyon condensation in concrete models, we take an abstract approach. Assume that a system of anyons, which form a modular tensor category D, is obtained via an anyon condensation from another system of anyons (i.e. another modular tensor category C). By a bootstrap analysis, we derive the relation between C and D from natural physical requirements. It turns out that the tensor unit of D can be identified with a connected commutative separable algebra A in C. The modular tensor category D consists of all deconfined particles and can be identified with the category of local $…
Anyons in a topologically ordered phase can carry fractional quantum numbers with respect to the symmetry group of the considered system, one example being the fractional charge of the quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. When such symmetry-fractionalized anyons condense, the resulting phase must spontaneously break the symmetry and display a local order parameter. In this paper, we study the phase diagram and anyon condensation transitions of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order perturbed by Ising interactions in the Toric Code. The interplay between the global Ising symmetry a…

Levin-Wen string-net models provide a construction of (2+1)D topologically ordered phases of matter with anyonic localized excitations described by the {Drinfeld} center of a unitary fusion category. Anyon condensation is a mechanism for phase transitions between (2+1)D topologically ordered phases. We construct an extension of Levin-Wen models in which tuning a parameter implements anyon condensation. We also describe the classification of anyons in Levin-Wen models via representation theory of the tube algebra, and use a variant of the tube algebra to classify low-energy localized excitation…
It is well-known that many topological phase transitions of intrinsic Abelian topological phases are accompanied by condensation and confinement of anyons. However, for non-Abelian topological phases, more intricate phenomena can occur at their phase transitions, because the multiple degenerate degrees of freedom of a non-Abelian anyon can change in different ways after phase transitions. In this paper, we study these new phenomena, including partial condensation, partial deconfinement and especially anyon splitting (a non-Abelian anyon splits into different kinds of the new anyon species) usi…
We study condensation of abelian bosons in string-net models, by constructing a family of Hamiltonians that can be tuned through any such transition. We show that these Hamiltonians admit two exactly solvable, string-net limits: one deep in the uncondensed phase, described by an initial, uncondensed string net Hamiltonian, and one deep in the condensed phase, described by a final, condensed string net model. We give a systematic description of the condensed string net model in terms of the uncondensed string net and the data associated with the condensing abelian bosons. Specifically, if the u…

We introduce a two-dimensional electronic insulator that possesses a toric code topological order enriched by translation symmetry. This state can be realized from disordering a weak topological superconductor by double-vortex condensation. It is termed the toric code insulator, whose anyonic excitations consist of a charge-$e$ chargon, a neutral fermion and two types of visons. There are two types of visons because they have constrained motion as a consequence of the fractional Josephson effect of one-dimensional topological superconductor. Importantly, these two types of visons are related b…
Topological phases exhibit unconventional order that cannot be detected by any local order parameter. In the framework of Projected Entangled Pair States(PEPS), topological order is characterized by an entanglement symmetry of the local tensor which describes the model. This symmetry can take the form of a tensor product of group representations, or in the more general case a correlated symmetry action in the form of a Matrix Product Operator(MPO), which encompasses all string-net models. Among other things, these entanglement symmetries allow for the description of ground states and anyon exc…
