A topological order is a new quantum phase that is beyond Landau's symmetry-breaking paradigm. Its defining features include robust degenerate ground states, long-range entanglement and anyons. It was known that $R$- and $F$-matrices, which characterize the fusion-braiding properties of anyons, can be used to uniquely identify topological order. In this article, we explore an essential question: how can the $R$- and $F$-matrices be experimentally measured? By using quantum simulations based on a toric code model with boundaries and state-of-the-art technology, we show that the braidings, i.e. the $R$-matrices, can be completely determined by the half braidings of boundary excitations due to the boundary-bulk duality and the anyon condensation. The $F$-matrices can also be measured in a scattering quantum circuit involving the fusion of three anyons in two different orders. Thus we provide an experimental protocol for measuring the unique identifiers of topological order.
Anyon condensation forms a mechanism which allows to relate different topological phases. We study anyon condensation in the framework of Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) where topological order is characterized through local symmetries of the entanglement. We show that anyon condensation is in one-to-one correspondence to the behavior of the virtual entanglement state at the boundary (i.e., the entanglement spectrum) under those symmetries, which encompasses both symmetry breaking and symmetry protected (SPT) order, and we use this to characterize all anyon condensations for abelian dou…
We derive the exact ground space of a family of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with uniaxial exchange anisotropy (XXZ) and interactions between nearest and next-nearest-neighbor spins. The Hamiltonian family, H(Q), is parametrized by a single variable Q. By using a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps spins into anyons, we show that the exact ground states of H(Q) correspond to a condensation of anyons with statistical phase phi=-4Q. We also provide matrix-product state representations of some ground states that allow for the efficient computation of spin-spin correlation functions.
We use Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) to study topological quantum phase transitions. The local description of topological order in the PEPS formalism allows us to set up order parameters which measure condensation and deconfinement of anyons, and serve as a substitute for conventional order parameters. We apply these order parameters, together with anyon-anyon correlation functions and some further probes, to characterize topological phases and phase transitions within a family of models based on a $\mathbb Z_4$ symmetry, which contains $\mathbb Z_4$ quantum double, toric code, double…
Anyons in a topologically ordered phase can carry fractional quantum numbers with respect to the symmetry group of the considered system, one example being the fractional charge of the quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. When such symmetry-fractionalized anyons condense, the resulting phase must spontaneously break the symmetry and display a local order parameter. In this paper, we study the phase diagram and anyon condensation transitions of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order perturbed by Ising interactions in the Toric Code. The interplay between the global Ising symmetry a…
The color excitations of interacting fermions carrying an $SU(3)$ color and $U(N_f)$ flavor index in one spatial dimension are studied in the framework of a perturbed $SU(3)_{N_f}$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model. Using Bethe ansatz methods the low energy quasi-particles are found to be massive solitons forming $SU(3)$ quark and antiquark multiplets. In addition to the color index the solitons carry an internal degree of freedom with non-integer quantum dimension. These zero modes are identified as non-Abelian anyons satisfying $SU(3)_{N_f}$ fusion rules. Controlling the soliton density by ex…
Topological ordered phases are related to changes in the properties of their quasi-particle excitations (anyons). We study these relations in the framework of projected entanglement pair states (\textsf{PEPS}) and show how condensing and confining anyons reduces a local gauge symmetry to a global on-site symmetry. We also study the action of this global symmetry over the quasiparticle excitations. As a byproduct, we observe that this symmetry reduction effect can be applied to one-dimensional systems as well, and brings about appealing physical interpretations on the classification of phases w…
Quantum information scrambling is the spread of local information into correlation throughout the entire quantum many-body system. This concept has become a central topic in different contexts. In this work, we restate the connection between anyon condensation and topological quantum information scrambling in quantum Hall interfaces. We consider the interface between the Abelian Halperin-330 state and the non-Abelian Read-Rezayi state. We verify explicitly that the interface can be fully gapped. This allows the transmutation of local pseudospin information carried by an Abelian anyon into topo…
We present systematic constructions of tensor-network wavefunctions for bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases respecting both onsite and spatial symmetries. From the classification point of view, our results show that in spatial dimensions $d=1,2,3$, the cohomological bosonic SPT phases protected by a general symmetry group $SG$ involving onsite and spatial symmetries are classified by the cohomology group $H^{d+1}(SG,U(1))$, in which both the time-reversal symmetry and mirror reflection symmetries should be treated as anti-unitary operations. In addition, for every SPT phase pro…
Topological degeneracy is the degeneracy of the ground states in a many-body system in the large-system-size limit. Topological degeneracy cannot be lifted by any local perturbation of the Hamiltonian. The topological degeneracies on closed manifolds have been used to discover/define topological order in many-body systems, which contain excitations with fractional statistics. In this paper, we study a new type of topological degeneracy induced by condensing anyons along a line in 2D topological ordered states. Such topological degeneracy can be viewed as carried by each end of the line-defect,…

The eigenvalue structure of the quantum transfer matrix is known to encode essential information about the elementary excitations. Here we study transfer matrices of quantum states in a topological phase using the tensor network formalism. We demonstrate that topological quantum order requires a particular type of `symmetry breaking' for the fixed point subspace of the transfer matrix, and relate physical anyon excitations to domain wall excitations at the level of the transfer matrix. A topological phase transition to a trivial phase triggers a change in the fixed point subspace to either a l…
Levin-Wen string-net models provide a construction of (2+1)D topologically ordered phases of matter with anyonic localized excitations described by the {Drinfeld} center of a unitary fusion category. Anyon condensation is a mechanism for phase transitions between (2+1)D topologically ordered phases. We construct an extension of Levin-Wen models in which tuning a parameter implements anyon condensation. We also describe the classification of anyons in Levin-Wen models via representation theory of the tube algebra, and use a variant of the tube algebra to classify low-energy localized excitation…
We study condensation of abelian bosons in string-net models, by constructing a family of Hamiltonians that can be tuned through any such transition. We show that these Hamiltonians admit two exactly solvable, string-net limits: one deep in the uncondensed phase, described by an initial, uncondensed string net Hamiltonian, and one deep in the condensed phase, described by a final, condensed string net model. We give a systematic description of the condensed string net model in terms of the uncondensed string net and the data associated with the condensing abelian bosons. Specifically, if the u…
Associated to every finite group, Kitaev has defined the quantum double model for every orientable surface without boundary. In this paper, we define boundaries for this model and characterize condensations; that is, we find all quasi-particle excitations (anyons) which disappear when they move to the boundary. We then consider two phases of the quantum double model corresponding to two groups with a domain wall between them, and study the tunneling of anyons from one phase to the other. Using this framework we discuss the necessary and sufficient conditions when two different groups give the …
Certain phase transitions between topological quantum field theories (TQFT) are driven by the condensation of bosonic anyons. However, as bosons in a TQFT are themselves nontrivial collective excitations, there can be topological obstructions that prevent them from condensing. Here we formulate such an obstruction in the form of a no-go theorem. We use it to show that no condensation is possible in SO(3)$_k$ TQFTs with odd $k$. We further show that a layered theory obtained by tensoring SO(3)$_k$ TQFT with itself any integer number of times does not admit condensation transitions either. This …
We consider the string-net model on the honeycomb lattice for Ising anyons in the presence of a string tension. This competing term induces a nontrivial dynamics of the non-Abelian anyonic quasiparticles and may lead to a breakdown of the topological phase. Using high-order series expansions and exact diagonalizations, we determine the robustness of this doubled Ising phase which is found to be separated from two gapped phases. An effective quantum dimer model emerges in the large tension limit giving rise to two different translation symmetry-broken phases. Consequently, we obtain four transi…
We develop methods to probe the excitation spectrum of topological phases of matter in two spatial dimensions. Applying these to the Fibonacci string nets perturbed away from exact solvability, we analyze a topological phase transition driven by the condensation of non-Abelian anyons. Our numerical results illustrate how such phase transitions involve the spontaneous breaking of a topological symmetry, generalizing the traditional Landau paradigm. The main technical tool is the characterization of the ground states using tensor networks and the topological properties using matrix-product-opera…
In the tensor network representation, a deformed $Z_{2}$ topological ground state wave function is proposed and its norm can be exactly mapped to the two-dimensional solvable Ashkin-Teller (AT) model. Then the topological (toric code) phase with anyonic excitations corresponds to the partial order phase of the AT model, and possible topological phase transitions are precisely determined. With the electric-magnetic self-duality, a novel gapless Coulomb state with quasi-long-range order is obtained via a quantum Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. The corresponding ground state is a condensate…

In this paper, we study gapped edges/interfaces in a 2+1 dimensional bosonic topological order and investigate how the topological entanglement entropy is sensitive to them. We present a detailed analysis of the Ishibashi states describing these edges/interfaces making use of the physics of anyon condensation in the context of Abelian Chern-Simons theory, which is then generalized to more non-Abelian theories whose edge RCFTs are known. Then we apply these results to computing the entanglement entropy of different topological orders. We consider cases where the system resides on a cylinder wit…
We consider a generic Fibonacci topological wave function on a square lattice, and the norm of this wave function can be mapped into the partition function of two-coupled $ϕ^{2}$-state Potts models with $ϕ=(\sqrt{5}+1)/2$ as the golden ratio. A global phase diagram is thus established to display non-abelian topological phase transitions. The Fibonacci topological phase corresponds to an emergent new phase of the two-coupled Potts models, and continuously change into two non-topological phases separately, which are dual each other and divided by a first-order phase transition line. Under the se…
An arbitrary form of complex potential perturbation in an oscillator consists of many exciting questions in open quantum systems. These often provide valuable insights in a realistic scenario when a quantum system interacts with external environments. Action renormalization will capture the phase of the wave functions; hence we construct wave function from Bethe ansatz and Frobenius methods. The unitary and non-unitary regimes are discussed to connect with functional calculations. We present a functional renormalization calculation for a non-hermitian oscillator. A dual space Left-Right formul…
Motivated by previous efforts in detecting topological orders from the ground state(s) wave function, we introduce a new quantum information tool, coined the information convex, to capture the bulk and boundary topological excitations of a 2D topological order. Defined as a set of reduced density matrices that minimizes the energy in a subsystem, the information convex encodes not only the bulk anyons but also the gapped boundaries of 2D topological orders. Using untwisted gapped boundaries of non-Abelian quantum doubles as an example, we show how the information convex reveals and characteriz…
Despite its putative robustness, the realization of and control over topological quantum matter is an ongoing grand challenge. Looking forward, robust characterization protocols are needed to first certify topological substrates before they are utilized in quantum algorithms. We contribute to this grand challenge by providing a series of experimentally accessible near- and medium-term protocols assessing the fidelity of logical processes. To do so we examine logical operators and anyonic quasiparticle excitations in twisted $\mathbb{Z}_{N=2,4}$ gauge theories. Extending the finite twist, a pro…
We study a simple model of symmetry-enriched topological order obtained by decorating a toric code model with lower-dimensional symmetry-protected topological states. We show that the symmetry fractionalization in this model can be characterized by string order parameters, and that these signatures are robust under the effects of external fields and interactions, up to the phase transition point. This extends the recent proposal of [New Journal of Physics 21, 113016 (2019)] beyond the setting of fixed-point tensor network states, and solidifies string order parameters as a useful tool to chara…
Condensation of quantum loops naturally leads to topological phases with Abelian excitations. Here, I propose that non-Abelian topological phases can arise from merging two (or several) identical Abelian quantum loop condensates. I define merging through a symmetrization operation, which makes the two loop condensates indistinguishable, inducing the possibility of a topological degeneracy in the space of quasiparticles. To illustrate the construction, the case of two identical toric-code quantum loop gases is considered. A spin-1 model for the two dimensional square lattice is presented for wh…
We construct a Pauli stabilizer model for every two-dimensional Abelian topological order that admits a gapped boundary. Our primary example is a Pauli stabilizer model on four-dimensional qudits that belongs to the double semion (DS) phase of matter. The DS stabilizer Hamiltonian is constructed by condensing an emergent boson in a $\mathbb{Z}_4$ toric code, where the condensation is implemented by making certain two-body measurements. We rigorously verify the topological order of the DS stabilizer model by identifying an explicit finite-depth quantum circuit (with ancillary qubits) that maps …

We analyze phase transitions induced by forbidding charges and fluxes in $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$, the simplest non-Abelian model among quantum doubles, a class of 2D spin lattice topological models introduced by Kitaev. Contrary to a topological quantum field theory, the lattice degrees of freedom allow to forbid charges and fluxes independently, resulting in a non-trivial effect on dyons. Forbidding charges and fluxes leads to only a subset of the original anyons remaining, forming a new theory. We interpret the processes the theory undergoes in terms of condensation, spontaneous symmetry breaking…

The existence of quantum non-liquid states and fracton orders, both gapped and gapless states, challenges our understanding of phases of entangled matter. We generalize the cellular topological states to liquid or non-liquid cellular states. We propose a mechanism to construct more general non-abelian states by gluing gauge-symmetry-breaking vs gauge-symmetry-extension interfaces as extended defects in a cellular network, including defects of higher-symmetries, in any dimension. Our approach also naturally incorporates the anyonic particle/string condensations and composite string (related to …

We construct a general wave function with the topological order by introducing the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gauge degrees of freedom, characterizing both the toric code state and double semion state. Via calculating the correlation length defined from the one-dimensional quantum transfer operator of the wave function norm, we can map out the complete phase diagram in terms of the parameter $λ$ and identify three different quantum critical points (QCPs) at $λ=0$, $\pm 1.73$. The first one separates the toric code phase and double semion phase, while later two describe the topological phase transitions …
