An atomistic effective Hamiltonian is used to investigate electrocaloric (EC) effects of Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) relaxor ferroelectrics in its ergodic regime, and subject to electric fields applied along the pseudocubic [111] direction. Such Hamiltonian qualitatively reproduces (i) the electric field-versus-temperature phase diagram, including the existence of a critical point where first-order and second-order transitions meet each other; and (ii) a giant EC response near such critical point. It also reveals that such giant response around this critical point is microscopically induced by field-induced percolation of polar nanoregions. Moreover, it is also found that, for any temperature above the critical point, the EC coefficient-versus-electric field curve adopts a maximum (and thus larger electrocaloric response too), that can be well described by the general Landau-like model proposed in [Jiang et al, Phys. Rev. B 96, 014114 (2017)] and that is further correlated with specific microscopic features related to dipoles lying along different rhombohedral directions. Furthermore, for temperatures being at least 40 K higher than the critical temperature, the (electric field, temperature) line associated with this maximal EC coefficient is below both the Widom line and the line representing percolation of polar nanoregions.
We have recently observed a giant electrocaloric effect (12 K in 25 V) in 350 nm sol-gel Pb Zr_0.95 Ti_0.05 O_3 films near the ferroelectric Curie temperature of 242oC. Here we demonstrate a giant electrocaloric effect (5 K in 25 V) in 260 nm sol-gel films of the relaxor ferroelectric 0.9 PbMg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3)O_3 - 0.1 PbTiO_3 near the Curie temperature of 60oC. This reduction in operating temperature widens the potential for applications in novel cooling systems.
The electrocaloric (EC) effect is calculated for Gd-substituted PMN (x = 0 to 0.1) relaxors from temperature dependent heat capacity and polarization measurements, using a thermodynamic Maxwell equation. Polarization change with temperature reveals an anomalous behaviour around the glass transition temperature, which is in the vicinity of a crossover from positive to negative EC effect, which is explained evoking the critical slowing-down of the polar nano-domains dynamics to super-dipolar glass state upon cooling. The maximum negative EC coefficient is observed to decrease from 0.4 K-mm/kV at…
Atomistic effective Hamiltonian simulations are used to investigate electrocaloric (EC) effects in the lead-free Ba(Zr$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$)O$_{3}$ (BZT) relaxor ferroelectric. We find that the EC coefficient varies non-monotonically with the field at any temperature, presenting a maximum that can be traced back to the behavior of BZT's polar nanoregions. We also introduce a simple Landau-based model that reproduces the EC behavior of BZT as a function of field and temperature, and which is directly applicable to other compounds. Finally, we confirm that, for low temperatures (i.e., in non-ergodi…
Over the past decades, there has been significant interest in new cooling technology based on the electrocaloric effect. The large electrocaloric effect observed in polymeric and inorganic ferroelectric materials made possible development of dielectric cooling devices of a new generation. We report a significant impact of annealing on the electrocaloric effect observed in 12/65/35 PLZT bulk ceramics. The electrocaloric data were obtained by direct measurements. Electrocaloric results confirm the existence of the significant electrocaloric response in this relaxor ferroelectric PLZT composition…
Lead-free Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.10Ti0.90O3 (BCZT) ceramic exhibits excellent dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties at the Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB). Previously, we demonstrated that the use of the anionic surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS, NaC12H25SO4) could enhance the dielectric properties of BCZT ceramic using surfactant-assisted solvothermal processing [1]. In the present study, structural, dielectric, ferroelectric properties, as well as electrocaloric effect and energy storage performances of this BCZT ceramic were thoroughly investigated. Electrocaloric (EC) materials show promise in eco-friendly solid-state refrigeration and integrable on-chip thermal management. While direct measurement of EC thin-films still remains challenging, a generic theoretical framework for quantifying the cooling properties of rich EC materials including normal-, relaxor-, organic- and anti-ferroelectrics is imperative for exploiting new flexible and room-temperature cooling alternatives. Here, we present a versatile theory that combines Master equation with Maxwell relations and analytically relates the macroscopic cooling responses in EC materials …
The electrocaloric effect (ECE) of BaZr$_{x}$Ti$_{1-x}$O$_3$ (BZT) is closely related to the relaxor state transition of the materials. This work presents a systematic study on the ECE and the state transition of the BZT, using a combined canonical and microcanonical Monte Carlo simulations based a lattice-based on a Ginzburg-Landau-type Hamiltonian. For comparison and verification, experimental measurements have been carried on BTO and BZT ($x=0.12$ and $0.2$) samples, including the ECE at various temperatures, domain patterns by Piezoresponse Force Microscopy at room temperature, and the P-E…
An atomistic effective Hamiltonian is used to compute electrocaloric (EC) effects in rare-earth substituted BiFeO$_{3}$ multiferroics. A phenomenological model is then developed to interpret these computations, with this model indicating that the EC coefficient is the sum of two terms, that involve electric quantities (polarization, dielectric response), the antiferromagnetic order parameter, and the coupling between polarization and antiferromagnetic order. The first one depends on the polarization and dielectric susceptibility, has the analytical form previously demonstrated for ferroelectri…
We use molecular dynamics with a first-principles-based shell model potential to study the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in lithium niobate, LiNbO$_3$, and find a giant electrocaloric effect along a line passing through the ferroelectric transition. With applied electric field, a line of maximum ECE passes through the zero field ferroelectric transition, continuing along a Widom line at high temperatures with increasing field, and along the instability that leads to homogeneous ferroelectric switching below $T_c$ with an applied field antiparallel to the spontaneous polarization. This line is de…
Molecular dynamics simulations predict a giant electrocaloric effect at the ferroelectric-antiferroelectric phase boundary in PZT (PbTiO$_3$-PbZrO$_3$). These large-scale simulations also give insights into the atomistic mechanisms of the electrocaloric effect in PZT materials. Studying a range of ferroelectric (FE) and antiferroelectric (AFE) PZT materials we found positive electrocaloric effect in FE composites, but AFE ones exhibit a positive-to-negative crossover. At the AFE-FE phase boundary we find complex domain patterns. We demonstrate that the origin of giant electrocaloric change of …
An improved thermodynamic cycle is proposed, where the cooling effect of an electrocaloric refrigerant is enhanced by applying a reversed electric field. In contrast to conventional adiabatic heating or cooling by on-off cycles of the external electric field, applying a reversed field is significantly improving the cooling efficiency, since the variation in configurational entropy is increased. By comparing results from computer simulations using Monte-Carlo algorithms and experiments using direct electrocaloric measurements, we show that the electrocaloric cooling efficiency can be enhanced b…
Recent findings of a large electrocaloric (EC) effect in polymeric and inorganic ferroelectric materials open a potential possibility of development of solid-state cooling or heating devices of new generation with better energy efficiency that may be less harmful for the environment. We investigate by using direct measurements, the temperature and electric field dependence of the electrocaloric response in Pb1-xLax(ZryTi1-y)1-x/4O3 bulk ceramics (PLZT) with x=0.06 and 0.12. Here, the properties of the EC response were probed in a part of the PLZT composition phase diagram with low y=0.40 compo…
Herein, we elucidate the impact of tubular confinement on the structure and relaxation behaviour of poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) and how these affect the para-/ferroelectric behavior of this polymer. We use PVDF nanotubes that were solidified in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements evidence a bimodal relaxation process for PVDF nanotubes: besides the bulk-like -relaxation, we detect a notably slower relaxation that is associated with the PVDF regions of restricted dynamics at the interface with the AAO pore. Strickingly, both the bulk-like and the i…
Relaxor ferrolectrics are important in technological applications due to a strong electromechanical response, energy storage capacity, electrocaloric effect, and pyroelectric energy conversion properties. Current efforts to discover and design new materials in this class generally rely on substitutional doping of known ferroelectrics, as slight changes to local compositional order can significantly affect the Curie temperature, morphotropic phase boundary, and electromechanical responses. In this work, we demonstrate that moving to the strong limit of compositional complexity in an ABO3 perovs…
An atomistic first-principles-based effective Hamiltonian is used to investigate energy storage in Ba(Zr$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$)O$_{3}$ relaxor ferroelectrics, both in their bulk and epitaxial films' forms, for electric fields applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the energy density linearly increases with temperature for electric fields applied along the pseudocubic [001], [110] and [111] directions in Ba(Zr$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$)O$_{3}$ bulk. For films at room temperature, the energy density adopts different behaviors (i.e., increase versus decrease) with strain depending …
Machine learning has been establishing its potential in multiple areas of condensed matter physics and materials science. Here we develop and use an unsupervised machine learning workflow within a framework of first-principles-based atomistic simulations to investigate phases, phase transitions, and their structural origins in ferroelectric relaxors, Ba(Ti$_{1-x}$,Zr$_x$)O$_3$. We first demonstrate the applicability of the workflow to identify phases and phase transitions in the parent compound, a prototypical ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$. We then apply the workflow on Ba(Ti$_{1-x}$,Zr$_x$)O$_3$, w…
We have developed a shell model potential to describe PbTiO3 and PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) by fitting to first-principles results. At zero pressure, the model reproduces the temperature behavior of PbTiO3, but with a smaller transition temperature than experimentally observed. We then fit a shell model potential for the complex PMN based on the transferability of the interatomic potentials. We find that even for ordered PMN, quenching the structure gives a non-polar state, but with local polarization (off-center ions) indicative of relaxor behavior.
Neutron pair distribution function analysis and first principles calculations have been employed to study short-range correlations in heavily disordered dielectric material Sr$_x$Ba$_{1-x}$Nb$_2$O$_6$ ($x=0.35, 0.5$ and 0.61). The combination of methods has been fruitful in pinpointing main local-structure features, their temperature behaviour and interrelation. A rather complex system of tilts is found to be both temperature and Sr-content sensitive with the biggest tilt magnitudes reached at low temperatures and high $x$. Relative Nb-O$_6$ displacements, directly responsible for material's f…
We have performed molecular dynamics simulations using a shell model potential developed by fitting first principles results to describe the behavior of the relaxor-ferroelectric (1-x)PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-xPbTiO3 (PMN-xPT) as function of concentration and temperature, using site occupancies within the random site model. In our simulations, PMN is cubic at all temperatures and behaves as a polar glass. As a small amount of Ti is added, a weak polar state develops, but structural disorder dominates, and the symmetry is rhombohedral. As more Ti is added the ground state is clearly polar and the system …
Due to critical environmental issues there is a pressing need to switch from current refrigeration methods based on compression of greenhouse gases to novel solid-state cooling technologies. Solid-state cooling capitalizes on the thermal response of materials to external fields named "caloric effect". The barocaloric (BC) effect driven by hydrostatic pressure is particularly promising from a technological point of view since typically presents larger cooling potential than other caloric variants (e.g., magnetocaloric and electrocaloric effects driven by magnetic and electric fields, respective…
Machine learning has emerged as a powerful tool for the analysis of mesoscopic and atomically resolved images and spectroscopy in electron and scanning probe microscopy, with the applications ranging from feature extraction to information compression and elucidation of relevant order parameters to inversion of imaging data to reconstruct structural models. However, the fundamental limitation of machine learning methods is their correlative nature, leading to extreme susceptibility to confounding factors. Here, we implement the workflow for causal analysis of structural scanning transmission el…
