We investigate the relationship between environment and galaxy evolution in the redshift range $0.5 < z < 1.0$. Galaxy overdensities are selected using a Friends-of-Friends algorithm, applied to deep photometric data in the Ultra-Deep Survey (UDS) field. A study of the resulting stellar mass functions reveals clear differences between cluster and field environments, with a strong excess of low-mass rapidly quenched galaxies in cluster environments compared to the field. Cluster environments also show a corresponding deficit of young, low-mass star-forming galaxies, which show a sharp radial decline towards cluster centres. By comparing mass functions and radial distributions, we conclude that young star-forming galaxies are rapidly quenched as they enter overdense environments, becoming post-starburst galaxies before joining the red sequence. Our results also point to the existence of two environmental quenching pathways operating in galaxy clusters, operating on different timescales. Fast quenching acts on galaxies with high specific star-formation rates, operating on timescales shorter than the cluster dynamical time ($ < 1$ Gyr). In contrast, slow quenching affects galaxies with moderate specific star-formation rates, regardless of their stellar mass, and acts on longer timescales ($\gtrsim 1$ Gyr). Of the cluster galaxies in the stellar mass range $9.0 < \log(M_{*}/M_{\odot}) < 10.5$ quenched during this epoch, we find that 73% were transformed through fast quenching, while the remaining 27% followed the slow quenching route.
A wide range of mechanisms have been put forward to explain the quenching of star formation in galaxies with cosmic time, however, the true balance of responsible mechanisms remains unknown. The identification and study of galaxies that have shut down their star formation on different timescales might elucidate which mechanisms dominate at different epochs and masses. Here we study the population of rapidly quenched galaxies (RQGs) in the SIMBA cosmological hydrodynamic simulation at $0.5<z<2$, comparing directly to observational post-starburst galaxies in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey via thei…
We investigate the timescale with which the IR luminosity decreases after a complete and rapid quenching of star formation using observations of local and high-redshift galaxies. From SED modelling, we derive the time since quenching of a subsample of 14 galaxies from the Herschel Reference Survey suffering from ram-pressure stripping due to the environment of the Virgo cluster and of a subsample of 7 rapidly quenched COSMOS galaxies selected through a state-of-the-art statistical method already tested on the determination of galaxies' star formation history. Three out of the 7 COSMOS galaxies…
We report the discovery of Tucana B, an isolated ultra-faint dwarf galaxy at a distance of D=1.4 Mpc. Tucana B was found during a search for ultra-faint satellite companions to the known dwarfs in the outskirts of the Local Group, although its sky position and distance indicate the nearest galaxy to be $\sim$500 kpc distant. Deep ground-based imaging resolves Tucana B into stars, and it displays a sparse red giant branch consistent with an old, metal poor stellar population analogous to that seen in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way, albeit at fainter apparent magnitudes. Tucana …
We analyze the colors and sizes of 32 quiescent (UVJ-selected) galaxies with strong Balmer absorption ($\mbox{EW}(Hδ) \geq 4$Å) at $z\sim0.8$ drawn from DR2 of the LEGA-C survey to test the hypothesis that these galaxies experienced compact, central starbursts before quenching. These recently quenched galaxies, usually referred to as post-starburst galaxies, span a wide range of colors and we find a clear correlation between color and half-light radius, such that bluer galaxies are smaller. We build simple toy models to explain this correlation: a normal star-forming disk plus a central, compa…
Ejective feedback as a quenching mechanism in the 1.5 billion years of the universe: detection of neutral gas outflow in a $z=4$ recently quenched galaxy
We analyse the structure of galaxies with high specific star formation rate (SSFR) in cluster and field environments in the redshift range $0.5<z<1.0$. Recent studies have shown that these galaxies are strongly depleted in dense environments due to rapid environmental quenching, giving rise to post-starburst galaxies (PSBs). We use effective radii and Sérsic indices as tracers of galaxy structure, determined using imaging from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). We find that the high-SSFR galaxies that survive into the cluster environment have, on average, larger effective radii than those in …
We present and publicly release (https://www.gclasshst.com) the first spatially resolved H$α$ maps of star-forming cluster galaxies at $z\sim1$, made possible with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) G141 grism on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Using a similar but updated method to 3D-HST in the field environment, we stack the H$α$ maps in bins of stellar mass, measure the half-light radius of the H$α$ distribution and compare it to the stellar continuum. The ratio of the H$α$ to stellar continuum half-light radius, $R[\mathrm{H}α/\mathrm{C}]=\frac{R_{\mathrm{eff, H}α}}{R_{\mathrm{eff, Cont}}}$,…
Observations have shown that the star-formation activity and the morphology of galaxies are closely related, but the underlying physical connection is not well understood. Using the TNG50 simulation, we explore the quenching and the morphological evolution of the 102 massive quiescent galaxies in the mass range of $10.5<\log(M_{\rm stellar}/M_{\odot})<11.5$ selected at $z=0$. The morphology of galaxies is quantified based on their kinematics, and we measure the quenching timescale of individual galaxies directly from star formation history. We show that galaxies tend to be quenched more rapidl…
We present the results from a pilot study with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) to determine the radio morphologies of extended radio sources and the properties of their host-galaxies in 10 massive galaxy clusters at z~1, an epoch in which clusters are assembling rapidly. These clusters are drawn from a parent sample of WISE-selected galaxy clusters that were cross-correlated with the VLA Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters survey (FIRST) to identify extended radio sources within 1$^{\prime}$ of the cluster centers. Out of the ten targeted sources, six are FR II sourc…
We examine the quenching characteristics of $328$ isolated dwarf galaxies $\left(10^{8} < M_{\rm star}/M_\odot < 10^{10} \right)$ within the \Rom{} cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Using mock observation methods, we identify isolated dwarf galaxies with quenched star formation and make direct comparisons to the quenched fraction in the NASA Sloan Atlas (NSA). Similar to other cosmological simulations, we find a population of quenched, isolated dwarf galaxies below $M_{\rm star} < 10^{9} M_\odot$ not detected within the NSA. We find that the presence of massive black holes (MBHs) in \Rom{}…
Understanding quenching mechanisms in low-mass galaxies is essential for understanding galaxy evolution overall. In particular, isolated galaxies are important tools to help disentangle the complex internal and external processes that impact star formation. Comparisons between quenched field and satellite galaxies in the low mass regime offer a substantial opportunity for discovery, although very few quenched galaxies with masses below $M_{\star}$$\sim$$10^{9} M_{\odot}$ are known outside the virial radius, $R_{vir}$, of any host halo. Importantly, simulations and observations suggest that an …
Accurate models of the star formation histories (SFHs) of recently-quenched galaxies can provide constraints on when and how galaxies shut down their star formation. The recent development of "non-parametric" SFH models promises the flexibility required to make these measurements. However, model and prior choices significantly affect derived SFHs, particularly for post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) which have sharp changes in their recent SFH. In this paper, we create mock PSBs, then use the Prospector SED fitting software to test how well four different SFH models recover key properties. We find …
We describe the SQuIGGLE survey of intermediate-redshift post-starburst galaxies. We leverage the large sky coverage of the SDSS to select ~1300 recently-quenched galaxies at 0.5<z<~0.9 based on their unique spectral shapes. These bright, intermediate-redshift galaxies are ideal laboratories to study the physics responsible for the rapid quenching of star formation: they are distant enough to be useful analogs for high-redshift quenching galaxies, but low enough redshift that multi-wavelength follow-up observations are feasible with modest telescope investments. We use the Prospector code to i…

We investigate galaxy conformity using the Mufasa cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We show a bimodal distribution in galaxy colour with radius, albeit with too many low-mass quenched satellite galaxies compared to observations. Mufasa produces conformity in observed properties such as colour, sSFR, and HI content; i.e neighbouring galaxies have similar properties. We see analogous trends in other properties such as in environment, stellar age, H$_2$ content, and metallicity. We introduce quantifying conformity using $S(R)$, measuring the relative difference in upper and lower quartile p…

We present 0.3" (band 6) and 1.5" (band 3) ALMA observations of the (sub)millimeter dust continuum emission for 25 radio galaxies at 1<z<5.2. Our survey reaches a rms flux density of ~50$μ$Jy in band 6 and ~20$μ$Jy in band 3. This is an order of magnitude deeper than single-dish 850 $μ$m observations, and reaches fluxes where synchrotron and thermal dust emission are expected to be of the same order of magnitude. Combining our sensitive ALMA observations with radio data from ATCA, VLA, and IR photometry from Herschel and Spitzer, we have disentangled the synchrotron and thermal dust emission. …
Galaxy evolution in groups and clusters: star formation rates, red sequence fractions, and the persistent bimodality

This study aims at identifying luminous quasars at $z>5.7$ among X-ray-selected sources in the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) in order to place a lower limit on black hole accretion well into the epoch of re-ionisation. We confirm the low significance detection with eROSITA of a previously known, optically faint $z=6.56$ quasar from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) survey. We obtained a pointed follow-up observation of the source with the Chandra X-ray telescope in order to confirm the eROSITA detection. Using new near-infrared spectroscopy, we d…
