Vulnerability exploitation is reportedly one of the main attack vectors against computer systems. Yet, most vulnerabilities remain unexploited by attackers. It is therefore of central importance to identify vulnerabilities that carry a high `potential for attack'. In this paper we rely on Symantec data on real attacks detected in the wild to identify a trade-off in the Impact and Complexity of a vulnerability, in terms of attacks that it generates; exploiting this effect, we devise a readily computable estimator of the vulnerability's Attack Potential that reliably estimates the expected volume of attacks against the vulnerability. We evaluate our estimator performance against standard patching policies by measuring foiled attacks and demanded workload expressed as the number of vulnerabilities entailed to patch. We show that our estimator significantly improves over standard patching policies by ruling out low-risk vulnerabilities, while maintaining invariant levels of coverage against attacks in the wild. Our estimator can be used as a first aid for vulnerability prioritisation to focus assessment efforts on high-potential vulnerabilities.
Due to the adoption of horizontal business models following the globalization of semiconductor manufacturing, the overproduction of integrated circuits (ICs) and the piracy of intellectual properties (IPs) can lead to significant damage to the integrity of the semiconductor supply chain. Logic locking emerges as a primary design-for-security measure to counter these threats, where ICs become fully functional only when unlocked with a secret key. However, Boolean satisfiability-based attacks have rendered most locking schemes ineffective. This gives rise to numerous defenses and new locking met…
Recent years have seen exponential development in wireless sensor devices and their rebirth as IoT, as well as increased popularity in wireless home devices such as bulbs, fans, and microwave. As they can be used in various fields such as medical devices, environmental studies, fire department or military application, etc., security of these low powered devices will always be a concern for all the user and security experts. Users nowadays want to control all these "smart" wireless home devices through their smartphones using an internet connection. Attacks such as distributed attacks on these …
Many operations in power grids, such as fault detection and event location estimation, depend on precise timing information. In this paper, a novel Time Synchronization Attack (TSA) is proposed to attack the timing information in smart grid. Since many applications in smart grid utilize synchronous measurements and most of the measurement devices are equipped with global positioning system (GPS) for precise timing, it is highly probable to attack the measurement system by spoofing the GPS. The effectiveness of TSA is demonstrated for three applications of phasor measurement unit (PMU) in smart…
The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming ubiquitous in our daily life. IoT networks that are made up of devices low power, low memory, and low computing capability appears in many applications such as healthcare, home, agriculture. IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Network (RPL) has become a standardized routing protocol for such low-power and lossy networks in IoT. RPL establishes the best routes between devices according to the requirements of the application, which is achieved by the Objective Function (OF). Even though some security mechanisms are defined for external attackers…
Although it is common for users to select bad passwords that can be easily cracked by attackers, password-based authentication remains the most widely-used method. To encourage users to select good passwords, enterprises often enforce policies. Such policies have been proven to be ineffectual in practice. Accurate assessment of a password's resistance to cracking attacks is still an unsolved problem, and our work addresses this challenge. Although the best way to determine how difficult it may be to crack a user-selected password is to check its resistance to cracking attacks employed by attac…
Modern information and communication technologies used by smart grids are subject to cybersecurity threats. This paper studies the impact of integrity attacks on real-time pricing (RTP), a key feature of smart grids that uses such technologies to improve system efficiency. Recent studies have shown that RTP creates a closed loop formed by the mutually dependent real-time price signals and price-taking demand. Such a closed loop can be exploited by an adversary whose objective is to destabilize the pricing system. Specifically, small malicious modifications to the price signals can be iterative…
The success of a business mission is highly dependent on the Communications and Information Systems (CIS) that support the mission. Mission Impact Assessment (MIA) seeks to assist the integration of business or military operations with cyber defense, particularly in bridging the cognitive gap between operational decision-makers and cyber defenders. Recent years have seen a growing interest in model-driven approaches to MIA. Such approaches involve construction and simulation of models of the mission, systems, and attack scenarios in order to understand an attack's impact, including its nature,…
Due to the nature of applications such as critical infrastructure and the Internet of Things etc. side channel analysis attacks are becoming a serious threat. Side channel analysis attacks take advantage from the fact that the behavior of crypto implementations can be observed and provides hints that simplify revealing keys. A new type of SCA are the so called horizontal SCAs. Well known randomization based countermeasures are effective means against vertical DPA attacks but they are not effective against horizontal DPA attacks. In this paper we investigate how the formula used to implement th…
In this paper we discuss the difficulties of mounting successful attack against crypto implementations when essential information is missing. We start with a detailed description of our attack against our own design, to highlight which information is needed to increase the success of an attack, i.e. we use it as a blueprint to the following attack against commercially available crypto chips. We would like to stress that our attack against our own design is very similar to what happens during certification e.g. according to Common Criteria Standard as in those cases the manufacturer needs to pr…
Mirai is a type of malware that creates a botnet of internet-connected devices, which can later be used to infect other devices or servers. This paper aims to analyze and explain the Mirai code and create a low-cost simulation environment to aid in the dynamic analysis of Mirai. Further, we perform controlled Denial-of-Service attacks while measuring resource consumption on resource-constrained compromised and victim Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, such as energy consumption, CPU utilization, memory utilization, Ethernet input/output performance, and Secure Digital card usage. The experiment…
In Europe and North America, the most widely used stream cipher to ensure privacy and confidentiality of conversations in GSM mobile phones is the A5/1. In this paper, we present a new attack on the A5/1 stream cipher with an average time complexity of 2^(48.5), which is much less than the brute-force attack with a complexity of 2^(64). The attack has a 100% success rate and requires about 5.65GB storage. We provide a detailed description of our new attack along with its implementation and results.
This paper reports about the impact of compiler options on the resistance of cryptographic implementations against side channel analysis attacks. We evaluated four compiler option for six different FPGAs from Intel and Xilinx. In order to ensure fair assessment we synthesized always the same VHDL code, kept the measurement setup and statistical analysis method etc. constant. Our analysis clearly shows that the compiler options have an impact on the success of attacks but also that the impact is unpredictable not only between different FPGAs but also for an individual FPGA.
Wiener's attack is a well-known polynomial-time attack on a RSA cryptosystem with small secret decryption exponent d, which works if d<n^{0.25}, where n=pq is the modulus of the cryptosystem. Namely, in that case, d is the denominator of some convergent p_m/q_m of the continued fraction expansion of e/n, and therefore d can be computed efficiently from the public key (n,e). There are several extensions of Wiener's attack that allow the RSA cryptosystem to be broken when d is a few bits longer than n^{0.25}. They all have the run-time complexity (at least) O(D^2), where d=Dn^{0.25}. Here we pro…
Recently, an image scrambling encryption algorithm of pixel bit based on chaos map was proposed. Considering the algorithm as a typical binary image scrambling/permutation algorithm exerting on plaintext of size $M\times (8N)$, this paper proposes a novel optimal method to break it with some known/chosen-plaintexts. The spatial complexity and computational complexity of the attack are only $O(32\cdot MN)$ and $O(16\cdot n_0\cdot MN)$ respectively, where $n_0$ is the number of known/chosen-plaintexts used. The method can be easily extended to break any permutation-only encryption scheme exertin…
DDoS attacks are increasingly used by `hackers' and `hacktivists' for various purposes. A number of on-line tools are available to launch an attack of significant intensity. These attacks lead to a variety of losses at the victim's end. We analyse the impact of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack announcements over a period of 5 years on the stock prices of the victim firms. We propose a method for event studies that does not assume the cumulative abnormal returns to be normally distributed, instead we use the empirical distribution for testing purposes. In most cases we find no signif…
The paper analyzes wormhole attack modes and classes and point to its threat impacts on ad hoc networks. New improvements are suggested to these types of attacks.
In this paper we propose two new generic attacks on the Rank Syndrome Decoding (RSD) problem Let $C$ be a random $[n,k]$ rank code over $GF(q^m)$ and let $y=x+e$ be a received word such that $x \in C$ and the $Rank(e)=r$. The first attack is combinatorial and permits to recover an error $e$ of rank weight $r$ in $min(O((n-k)^3m^3q^{r\lfloor\frac{km}{n}\rfloor}, O((n-k)^3m^3q^{(r-1)\lfloor\frac{(k+1)m}{n}\rfloor}))$ operations on $GF(q)$. This attack dramatically improves on previous attack by introducing the length $n$ of the code in the exponent of the complexity, which was not the case in pr…
The losses arising from a system being hit by cyber attacks can be staggeringly high, but defending against such attacks can also be costly. This work proposes an attack countermeasure selection approach based on cost impact analysis that takes into account the impacts of actions by both the attacker and the defender. We consider a networked system providing services whose provision depends on other components in the network. We model the costs and losses to service availability from compromises and defensive actions to the components, and show that while containment of the attack can be an ef…
IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is the standard network layer protocol for achieving efficient routing in IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN). Resource-constrained and non-tamper resistant nature of smart sensor nodes makes RPL protocol susceptible to different threats. An attacker may use insider or outsider attack strategy to perform Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks against RPL based networks. Security and Privacy risks associated with RPL protocol may limit its global adoption and worldwide acceptance. A proper investigation of RPL speci…
Companies are misled into thinking they solve their security issues by using a DevSecOps system. This paper aims to answer the question: Could a DevOps pipeline be misused to transform a securely developed application into an insecure one? To answer the question, we designed a typical DevOps pipeline utilizing Kubernetes (K8s} as a case study environment and analyzed the applicable threats. Then, we developed four attack scenarios against the case study environment: maliciously abusing the user's privilege of deploying containers within the K8s cluster, abusing the Jenkins instance to modify f…
The future of the Internet is predicted to be on the cloud, resulting in more complex and more intensive computing, but possibly also a more insecure digital world. The presence of a large amount of resources organized densely is a key factor in attracting DDoS attacks. Such attacks are arguably more dangerous in private individual clouds with limited resources. This paper discusses several prominent approaches introduced to counter DDoS attacks in private clouds. We also discuss issues and challenges to mitigate DDoS attacks in private clouds.
Algorithmic complexity vulnerabilities occur when the worst-case time/space complexity of an application is significantly higher than the respective average case for particular user-controlled inputs. When such conditions are met, an attacker can launch Denial-of-Service attacks against a vulnerable application by providing inputs that trigger the worst-case behavior. Such attacks have been known to have serious effects on production systems, take down entire websites, or lead to bypasses of Web Application Firewalls. Unfortunately, existing detection mechanisms for algorithmic complexity vuln…
Understanding smart grid cyber attacks is key for developing appropriate protection and recovery measures. Advanced attacks pursue maximized impact at minimized costs and detectability. This paper conducts risk analysis of combined data integrity and availability attacks against the power system state estimation. We compare the combined attacks with pure integrity attacks - false data injection (FDI) attacks. A security index for vulnerability assessment to these two kinds of attacks is proposed and formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem. We show that such combined attacks ca…
Increasing communication and self-driving capabilities for road vehicles lead to threats imposed by attackers. Especially attacks leading to safety violations have to be identified to address them by appropriate measures. The impact of an attack depends on the threat exploited, potential countermeasures and the traffic situation. In order to identify such attacks and to use them for testing, we propose the systematic approach SaSeVAL for deriving attacks of autonomous vehicles. SaSeVAL is based on threats identification and safety-security analysis. The impact of automotive use cases to attack…
Meta reinforcement learning (meta RL), as a combination of meta-learning ideas and reinforcement learning (RL), enables the agent to adapt to different tasks using a few samples. However, this sampling-based adaptation also makes meta RL vulnerable to adversarial attacks. By manipulating the reward feedback from sampling processes in meta RL, an attacker can mislead the agent into building wrong knowledge from training experience, which deteriorates the agent's performance when dealing with different tasks after adaptation. This paper provides a game-theoretical underpinning for understanding …
As a variant of the HB authentication protocol for RFID systems, which relies on the complexity of decoding linear codes against passive attacks, Madhavan et al. presented Non-Linear HB(NLHB) protocol. In contrast to HB, NLHB relies on the complexity of decoding a class of non-linear codes to render the passive attacks proposed against HB ineffective. In this paper, we show that passive attacks against HB protocol can still be applicable to NLHB and this protocol does not provide the desired security margin. In our attack, we first linearize the non-linear part of NLHB to obtain a HB equivalen…
Power systems are moving towards hybrid AC/DC grids with the integration of HVDC links, renewable resources and energy storage modules. New models of frequency control have to consider the complex interactions between these components. Meanwhile, more attention should be paid to cyber security concerns as these control strategies highly depend on data communications which may be exposed to cyber attacks. In this regard, this article aims to analyze the false data injection (FDI) attacks on the AC/DC interconnected system with virtual inertia and develop advanced diagnosis tools to reveal their…

Machine learning models' goal is to make correct predictions for specific tasks by learning important properties and patterns from data. By doing so, there is a chance that the model learns properties that are unrelated to its primary task. Property Inference Attacks exploit this and aim to infer from a given model (\ie the target model) properties about the training dataset seemingly unrelated to the model's primary goal. If the training data is sensitive, such an attack could lead to privacy leakage. This paper investigates the influence of the target model's complexity on the accuracy of th…
In this work I study the problem of adversarial perturbations to rewards, in a Multi-armed bandit (MAB) setting. Specifically, I focus on an adversarial attack to a UCB type best-arm identification policy applied to a stochastic MAB. The UCB attack presented in [1] results in pulling a target arm K very often. I used the attack model of [1] to derive the sample complexity required for selecting target arm K as the best arm. I have proved that the stopping condition of UCB based best-arm identification algorithm given in [2], can be achieved by the target arm K in T rounds, where T depends only…
Cyber-attacks have become as commonplace as the Internet itself. Each year, industry reports, media outlets and academic articles highlight this increased prevalence, spanning both the amount and variety of attacks and cybercrimes. In this article, we seek to further advance discussions on cyber threats, cognitive vulnerabilities and cyberpsychology through a critical reflection on the social and psychological aspects related to cyber-attacks. In particular, we are interested in understanding how members of the public perceive and engage with risk and how they are impacted during and after a c…
Blockchain technology is a crypto-based secure ledger for data storage and transfer through decentralized, trustless peer-to-peer systems. Despite its advantages, previous studies have shown that the technology is not completely secure against cyber attacks. Thus, it is crucial to perform domain specific risk analysis to measure how viable the attacks are on the system, their impact and consequently the risk exposure. Specifically, in this paper, we carry out an analysis in terms of quantifying the risk associated to an operational multi-layered Blockchain framework for Smart Mobility Data-mar…
KNX is one popular communication protocol for a building automation system (BAS). However, its lack of security makes it subject to a variety of attacks. We are the first to study the false data injection attack against a KNX based BAS. We design a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack to change the data from a temperature sensor and inject false data into the BAS. We model a BAS and analyze the impact of the false data injection attack on the system in terms of energy cost. Since the MITM attack may disturb the KNX traffic, we design a machine learning (ML) based detection strategy to detect the fa…
Internet of Things (IoT) devices are becoming ubiquitous in our lives, with applications spanning from the consumer domain to commercial and industrial systems. The steep growth and vast adoption of IoT devices reinforce the importance of sound and robust cybersecurity practices during the device development life-cycles. IoT-related vulnerabilities, if successfully exploited can affect, not only the device itself, but also the application field in which the IoT device operates. Evidently, identifying and addressing every single vulnerability is an arduous, if not impossible, task. Attack taxon…
We study the impact of signal jamming attacks against the communication based train control (CBTC) systems and develop the countermeasures to limit the attacks' impact. CBTC supports the train operation automation and moving-block signaling, which improves the transport efficiency. We consider an attacker jamming the wireless communication between the trains or the train to wayside access point, which can disable CBTC and the corresponding benefits. In contrast to prior work studying jamming only at the physical or link layer, we study the real impact of such attacks on end users, namely train…

We demonstrate the first practical off-path time shifting attacks against NTP as well as against Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) secure Chronos-enhanced NTP. Our attacks exploit the insecurity of DNS allowing us to redirect the NTP clients to attacker controlled servers. We perform large scale measurements of the attack surface in NTP clients and demonstrate the threats to NTP due to vulnerable DNS.
Distance bounding (DB) emerged as a countermeasure to the so-called \emph{relay attack}, which affects several technologies such as RFID, NFC, Bluetooth, and Ad-hoc networks. A prominent family of DB protocols are those based on graphs, which were introduced in 2010 to resist both mafia and distance frauds. The security analysis in terms of distance fraud is performed by considering an adversary that, given a vertex labeled graph $G = (V, E)$ and a vertex $v \in V$, is able to find the most frequent $n$-long sequence in $G$ starting from $v$ (MFS problem). However, to the best of our knowledge…
Collaborative Filtering (CF) models lie at the core of most recommendation systems due to their state-of-the-art accuracy. They are commonly adopted in e-commerce and online services for their impact on sales volume and/or diversity, and their impact on companies' outcome. However, CF models are only as good as the interaction data they work with. As these models rely on outside sources of information, counterfeit data such as user ratings or reviews can be injected by attackers to manipulate the underlying data and alter the impact of resulting recommendations, thus implementing a so-called s…
A mobile ad hoc network (MANETs) is a self-organizing system of mobile nodes that communicate with each other via wireless links with no fixed infrastructure or centralized administration such as base station or access points. Nodes in a MANETs operate both as host as well as routers to forward packets for each other in a multihop fashion. For many applications in wireless networks, multicasting is an important and frequent communication service. By multicasting, since a single message can be delivered to multiple receivers simultaneously. It greatly reduces the transmission cost when sending …
Industrial facilities and critical infrastructures are transforming into "smart" environments that dynamically adapt to external events. The result is an ecosystem of heterogeneous physical and cyber components integrated in cyber-physical systems which are more and more exposed to cyber-physical attacks, i.e., security breaches in cyberspace that adversely affect the physical processes at the core of the systems. We provide a formal compositional metric to estimate the impact of cyber-physical attacks targeting sensor devices of IoT systems formalised in a simple extension of Hennessy and Reg…
A Novel Bifurcation Method for Observation Perturbation Attacks on Reinforcement Learning Agents: Load Altering Attacks on a Cyber Physical Power System
In this paper, we examine the impact of cyberattacks in an integrated transmission and distribution (T&D) power grid model with distributed energy resource (DER) integration. We adopt the OCTAVE Allegro methodology to identify critical system assets, enumerate potential threats, analyze, and prioritize risks for threat scenarios. Based on the analysis, attack strategies and exploitation scenarios are identified which could lead to system compromise. Specifically, we investigate the impact of data integrity attacks in inverted-based solar PV controllers, control signal blocking attacks in prote…
In this paper we demonstrate that the efficiency of quantum algorithms can be significantly altered by malicious manipulation of the input data. We exemplify the possibility of attacks on quantum spatial search based on Szegedy walk. We achieve this by proposing a framework suitable for analysing efficiency of attacks on quantum search algorithms. We provide the analysis of proposed attacks for different models of random graphs.
