The influence of the Cosmic Web on galaxy formation and evolution is of great observational and theoretical interest. We investigate whether the Cosmic Web leaves an imprint in the spatial clustering of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), using the group catalog of Yang et al. and tidal field estimates at $\sim2h^{-1}$Mpc scales from the Mass-Tides-Velocity data set of Wang et al. We use the $\textit{tidal anisotropy}$ $α$ (Paranjape et al.) to characterise the tidal environment of groups, and measure the redshift-space 2-point correlation function (2pcf) of group positions and the luminosity- and colour-dependent clustering of group galaxies using samples segregated by $α$. We find that all the 2pcf measurements depend strongly on $α$, with factors of $\sim20$ between the large-scale 2pcf of objects in the most and least isotropic environments. To test whether these strong trends imply `beyond halo mass' effects for galaxy evolution, we compare our results with corresponding 2pcf measurements in mock catalogs constructed using a halo occupation distribution that only uses halo mass as an input. We find that this prescription qualitatively reproduces $\textit{all}$ observed trends, and also quantitatively matches many of the observed results. Although there are some statistically significant differences between our `halo mass only' mocks and the data -- in the most and least isotropic environments -- which deserve further investigation, our results suggest that if the tidal environment induces additional effects on galaxy properties other than those inherited from their host halos, then these must be weak.
We use a sample of over 5000 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with extended morphologies at z<0.8 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the ensemble optical variability as a function of rest-frame time lag and AGN luminosity with the aim of investigating these parameter relationships at lower luminosities than previously studied. We compare photometry from imaging data with spectrophotometry obtained weeks to years later in the Sloan g, r, and i bands. We employ quasar and galaxy eigenspectra fitting to separate the AGN and host galaxy components. A strong correlation between the varia…
We study the mean tidal coherence of galaxy environments as a function of intrinsic luminosity determined by the absolute $r$-band magnitude. The tidal coherence of a galaxy environment is estimated as the cosine of the angle between two minor eigenvectors of the tidal field smoothed at the scales of $2$ and $30\,h^{-1}$Mpc centered on each of the local galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Data Release 10. Creating four luminosity-selected samples of the Sloan galaxies, we control them to have identical density distributions, in order to nullify the dominant effect of the local density. It is f…
We present a catalog of nearby (z $\leq$ 0.5) quasars with significant features of post-starburst stellar populations in their optical spectra, so-called post-starburst quasars, or PSQs. After carefully decomposing spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7) Quasar Catalog into quasar and host-galaxy components, we derive a sample of 208 PSQs. Their host-galaxy components have strong Hδ absorption ($\rm EW \geq 6 Å$) indicating a significant contribution of an intermediate-aged stellar population formed in a burst of star formation within the past 1 Gyr, which makes t…
A compact group (CG) is a kind of special galaxy system where the galaxy members are separated at the distances of the order of galaxy size. The strong interaction between the galaxy members makes CGs ideal labs for studying the environmental effects on galaxy evolution. The traditional photometric selection algorithm biases against the CG candidates at low redshifts, while the spectroscopic identification technique is affected by the spectroscopic incompleteness of sample galaxies and typically biases against the high redshift candidates. In this study, we combine these two methods and select…
Automatic detection of peculiar galaxy pairs in Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Polar-ring galaxies (PRGs) are fascinating systems in which the central object (typically, an early-type galaxy) is encircled by a large-scale ring of stars, gas, and dust with almost perpendicular spin. PRGs are rare objects and their formation mechanism is not entirely clear. In this paper, we present a new sample of 31 candidates to PRGs identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using their stacked $gri$ images, we determined geometrical parameters of these galaxies (the position angle and the size of the host galaxy and the ring). We compare our sample objects to the previously kn…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) program monitors 849 active galactic nuclei (AGN) both spectroscopically and photometrically. The photometric observations used in this work span over four years and provide an excellent baseline for variability studies of these objects. We present the photometric light curves from 2014 to 2017 obtained by the Steward Observatory's Bok telescope and the CFHT telescope with MegaCam. We provide details on the data acquisition and processing of the data from each telescope, the difference imaging photometry used to produce the light cur…
We investigate the relationship between the mass of the central supermassive black hole, M_bh, and the host galaxy luminosity, L_gal, in a sample of quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7). We use composite quasar spectra binned by black hole mass and redshift to assess galaxy features that would otherwise be overwhelmed by noise in individual spectra. The black hole mass is calculated using the photoionization method, and the host galaxy luminosity is inferred from the depth of the Ca II H + K features in the composite spectra. We evaluate the evolution in the M_…
We present an image-based method for comparing the structural properties of galaxies produced in hydrodynamical simulations to real galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The key feature of our work is the introduction of extensive observational realism, such as object crowding, noise and viewing angle, to the synthetic images of simulated galaxies, so that they can be fairly compared to real galaxy catalogs. We apply our methodology to the dust-free synthetic image catalog of galaxies from the Illustris simulation at $z=0$, which are then fit with bulge+disc models to obtain morphological …
A Study of Active Galactic Nuclei in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies with Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectroscopy
White dwarfs are the end state of the evolution of more than 97% of all stars, and therefore carry information on the structure and evolution of the Galaxy through their luminosity function and initial-to-final mass relation. Examining the new spectra of all white or blue stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16, we report the spectral classification of 2410 stars, down to our identification cut-off of signal-to-noise ratio equal to three. We newly identify 1404 DAs, 189 DZs, 103 DCs, 12 DBs, and 9 CVs. The remaining objects are a mix of carbon or L stars (dC/L), narrow-lined hydr…
We use the multi-epoch spectra of 362 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project to investigate the dependence of the blueshift of CIV relative to MgII on quasar properties. We confirm that high-blueshift sources tend to have low CIV equivalent widths (EWs), and that the low-EW sources span a range of blueshift. Other high-ionization lines, such as HeII, also show similar blueshift properties. The ratio of the line width (measured as both the full-width at half maximum and the velocity dispersion) of CIV to that of MgII increases with blueshift. Quasar variability …
