Galaxies are usually classified as star forming or active by using diagnostic diagrams, such as [N II]/Halpha vs. [O III]/Hbeta. Active galaxies are further classified into Seyfert or LINER-like sources. We claim that a non-negligible fraction of galaxies classified as LINERs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are in fact ionized by hot post-AGB stars and white dwarfs.
We use the SDSS and WISE surveys to investigate the real nature of galaxies defined as LINERs in the BPT diagram. After establishing a mid-infrared colour W2-W3 = 2.5 as the optimal separator between galaxies with and without star formation, we investigate the loci of different galaxy classes in the W_{Ha} versus W2-W3 space. We find that: (1) A large fraction of LINER-like galaxies are emission-line retired galaxies, i.e galaxies which have stopped forming stars and are powered by hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES). Their W2-W3 colours show no sign of star formation and their Ha equivalent w…
Seyfert and LINER galaxies are known to exhibit compact radio emission on $\sim$ 10 to 100 parsec scales, but larger Kiloparsec-Scale Radio structures (KSRs) often remain undetected in sub-arcsec high resolution observations. We investigate the prevalence and nature of KSRs in Seyfert and LINER galaxies using the 1.4 GHz VLA FIRST and NVSS observations. Our sample consists of 2651 sources detected in FIRST and of these 1737 sources also have NVSS counterparts. Considering the ratio of total to peak flux density ($θ$ $=$ ${\rm (S_{\rm int}/S_{\rm peak})^{1/2}}$) as a parameter to infer the pres…
Passive red galaxies frequently contain warm ionized gas and have spectra similar to low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs). Here we investigate the nature of the ionizing sources powering this emission, by comparing nuclear spectroscopy from the Palomar survey with larger aperture data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find the line emission in the majority of passive red galaxies is spatially extended; the Halpha surface brightness profile depends on radius (r) as r^(-1.28). We detect strong line ratio gradients with radius in [N II]/Ha, [S II]/Ha, and [O III]/[S II], requ…
MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is a SDSS-IV survey that will obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy from 3600 Å to 10300 Å for a representative sample of over 10000 nearby galaxies. In this paper we present the analysis of nebular emission line properties in 14 galaxies obtained with P-MaNGA, a prototype of the MaNGA instrument. Using spatially resolved diagnostic diagrams we find extended star formation in galaxies that are centrally dominated by Seyfert/LINER-like emission, which illustrates that galaxy characterisations based on single fibre spectra are necessar…
AGN populations in the local universe: their alignment with the main-sequence, characteristics of their stellar populations, accretion efficiency, and the impact of AGN feedback
Giant, star-forming clumps are a common feature prevalent amongst high-redshift star-forming galaxies and play a critical role in shaping their chaotic morphologies and yet, their nature and role in galaxy evolution remains to be fully understood. A majority of the effort to study clumps has been focused at high redshifts, and local clump studies have often suffered from small sample sizes. In this work, we present an analysis of clump properties in the local universe, and for the first time, performed with a statistically significant sample. With the help of the citizen science-powered Galaxy…
Integral field spectroscopy studies based on CALIFA data have recently revealed the presence of ongoing low-level star formation (SF) in the periphery of ~10% of local early-type galaxies (ETGs), witnessing a still ongoing inside-out galaxy growth process. A distinctive property of the nebular component in these ETGs, classified i+, is a two-radial-zone structure, with the inner zone displaying LINER emission with a Hαequivalent width EW~1Å, and the outer one (3Å<EW<~20Å) showing HII-region characteristics. Using CALIFA IFS data, we empirically demonstrate that the confinement of nebular emiss…
The so-called star-forming main sequence of galaxies is the apparent tight relationship between the star formation rate and stellar mass of a galaxy. Previous studies exclude galaxies which are not strictly 'star forming' from the main sequence, because they do not lie on the same tight relation. Using local galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey we have classified galaxies according to their emission line ratios, and studied their location on the star formation rate - stellar mass plane. We find that galaxies form a sequence from the `blue cloud' galaxies which are actively forming stars, t…
This is the second paper in a series using data from tens of thousands S0 galaxies of the local Universe ($z\lesssim 0.1$) retrieved from the NASA-Sloan Atlas. It builds on the outcomes of the previous work, which introduced a new classification scheme for these objects based on the principal component analysis (PCA) of their optical spectrum and its projections on to the first two eigenvectors or principal components (the PC1$\unicode{x2013}$PC2 diagram). We provide a comprehensive characterization of the activity of present-day S0s throughout both the broad-band PC1$\unicode{x2013}$PC2 spect…
Local galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are used to provide additional support for an evolutionary pathway in which AGN activity is associated with star-formation quenching. Composite, Seyfert 2 and LINER galaxies account for $\sim$60\% of all star-formation in massive galaxies ($M_\star > 10^{10.5} M_\odot$). Inclusion of these galaxies results in a "turnover" in the $SFR - M_\star$ relation for massive galaxies. Our analysis shows that bulge growth has already occurred in the most massive galaxies ($M_\star > 10^{10.5}$ $M_\odot$), and bulges continue to grow as galaxies quench and …
Quasar broad emission lines are largely powered by photoionization from the accretion continuum. Increased central luminosity will enhance line emissivity in more distant clouds, leading to increased average distance of the broad-line-emitting clouds and decreased averaged line width, known as the broad-line region (BLR) "breathing". However, different lines breathe differently, and some high-ionization lines, such as C IV, can even show "anti-breathing" where the line broadens when luminosity increases. Using multi-year photometric and spectroscopic monitoring data from the Sloan Digital Sky …
In the absence of the two emission lines H$α$ and [NII] (6584Å) in a BPT diagram, we show that other spectral information is sufficiently informative to distinguish AGN galaxies from star-forming galaxies. We use pattern recognition methods and a sample of galaxy spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to show that, in this survey, the flux and equivalent width of [OIII] (5007Å) and H$β$, along with the 4000Å-break, can be used to classify galaxies in a BPT diagram. This method provides a higher accuracy of predictions than those which use stellar mass and [OIII]/H$β$. First, we use B…
We study the classification and composite spectra of galaxy in the fourth data release (DR4) of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). We select 40,182 spectra of galaxies from LAMOST DR4, which have photometric in- formation but no spectroscopic observations in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS). These newly observed spectra are re-calibrated and classified into six classes, i.e. pas- sive, Hα-weak, star-forming, composite, LINER and Seyfert using the line intensity (H\b{eta}, [OIII]λ5007, Hα and [NII]λ6585). We also study the correlation between spectral clas…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has proved to be a powerful resource for understanding the physical properties and chemical composition of star-forming galaxies in the local universe. The SDSS population of active galactic nuclei (AGN) remains as of yet less explored in this capacity. To extend the rigorous study of \ion{H}{ii} regions in the SDSS to AGN, we adapt methods for computing direct-method chemical abundances for application to the narrow-line regions (NLR) of AGN. By accounting for triply-ionized oxygen, we are able to more completely estimate the total oxygen abundance. We find…
We present a study of nuclear activities in nearby S0 galaxies. After cross-matching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) with the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies (RC3) and visually checking the SDSS images, we derive a sample of 583 S0 galaxies with the central spectrophotometric information. In order to separate nebular emission lines from the underlying stellar contribution, we fit the stellar population model to the SDSS spectra of these S0 galaxies. According to the BPT diagram, we find that $8\%$ of S0 galaxies show central star-forming activity, while the fr…
What determines the nuclear radio emission in local galaxies? We combine optical [O III] line emission, robust black hole (BH) mass estimates, and high-resolution e-MERLIN 1.5-GHz data, from the LeMMINGs survey, of a statistically-complete sample of 280 nearby, optically active (LINER and Seyfert) and inactive HII and Absorption line galaxies [ALG]) galaxies. Using [O III] luminosity ($L_{\rm [O~III]}$) as a proxy for the accretion power, local galaxies follow distinct sequences in the optical-radio planes of BH activity, which suggest different origins of the nuclear radio emission for the op…
We analyze a complete spectroscopic sample of galaxies ($\sim$600,000 ) drawn from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, DR7) to look for evidence of galactic winds in the local Universe. We focus on the shape of the [OIII]$λ$5007 emission line as a tracer of ionizing gas outflows. We stack our spectra in a fine grid of star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass to analyze the dependence of winds on the position of galaxies in the SFR versus mass diagram. We do not find any significant evidence of broad and shifted [OIII]$λ$5007 emission line which we interpret as no evidence of outflowing ionized g…
Periodically variable quasars have been suggested as close binary supermassive black holes. We present a systematic search for periodic light curves in 625 spectroscopically confirmed quasars with a median redshift of 1.8 in a 4.6 deg$^2$ overlapping region of the Dark Energy Survey Supernova (DES-SN) fields and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 (SDSS-S82). Our sample has a unique 20-year long multi-color ($griz$) light curve enabled by combining DES-SN Y6 observations with archival SDSS-S82 data. The deep imaging allows us to search for periodic light curves in less luminous quasars (dow…
We present the discovery of a sample of 18 low-redshift (z<0.3) galaxies with transient nuclear radio emission. These galaxies are not or weakly detected in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm survey performed on 1993-2009, but have brightened significantly in the radio flux (by a factor of >5) in the epoch I (2017-2019) observations of Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS). All the 18 galaxies have been detected in the epoch II VLASS observations in 2020-2021, for which the radio flux is found to evolve slowly (by a factor of ~40%) over a period of about three years. 15 galaxies have…
Current observational facilities have yet to conclusively detect $10^3 - 10^4 M_{\odot}$ intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) that fill in the evolutionary gap between early universe seed black holes and $z \sim 0$ supermassive black holes. Dwarf galaxies present an opportunity to reveal active IMBHs amidst persistent star formation. We introduce photoionization simulations tailored to address key physical uncertainties: coincident vs. non-coincident mixing of IMBH and starlight excitation, open vs. closed surrounding gas cloud geometries, and different AGN SED shapes. We examine possible AGN…
We present a multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic study of 42 Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in two samples of galaxy clusters chosen for a gravitational lensing study. The study's initial sample combines 25 BCGs from the Cluster Lensing and Supernova Survey with Hubble (CLASH) sample and 37 BCGs from the Sloan Giant Arcs Survey (SGAS) with a total redshift range of 0.2 < z < 0.7. Using archival GALEX, Hubble Space Telescope, Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, Herschel, and Very Large Array data we determine the BCGs' stellar mass, radio power, and star formation rates. The radi…
We present an entirely new sample of 388 low-mass galaxies ($M_\star \leq 10^{10} M_\odot$) that have spectroscopic signatures indicating the presence of massive black holes (BHs) in the form of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or tidal disruption events (TDEs). Of these, 70 have stellar masses in the dwarf galaxy regime with $10^8 \lesssim M_\star/M_\odot \lesssim 10^{9.5}$. We identify the active galaxies by analyzing optical spectra of a parent sample of $\sim$23,000 low-mass emission-line galaxies in the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) Survey Data Release 4, and employing four different diagn…
Through the use of a High Band Antenna system, the Low Frequency Array Two-Meter Sky Survey (LoTSS) is an attempt to complete a high-resolution survey of the northern celestial sky. To date, thousands of radio sources have been classified by LOFAR with most of them consisting of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The strong AGN emissions detected by LoTSS, it is thought, are powered by supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the center of galaxies. During an analysis of 1500 images of these AGNs, we identified 10 radio sources with radial spokes emitted from an unknown source. According to LOFAR, the r…
This paper presents a study of the local radio source population, by cross-comparing the data from the first data release (DR1) of the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 main galaxy spectroscopic sample. The LoTSS DR1 provides deep data (median rms noise of 71 $\mathrmμ$Jy at 150 MHz) over 424 square degrees of sky, which is sufficient to detect 10615 (32 per cent) of the SDSS galaxies over this sky area. An improved method to separate active galactic nuclei (AGN) accurately from sources with radio emission powered by star formation (SF) is develope…
