State-of-the-art methods of attribute detection from faces almost always assume the presence of a full, unoccluded face. Hence, their performance degrades for partially visible and occluded faces. In this paper, we introduce SPLITFACE, a deep convolutional neural network-based method that is explicitly designed to perform attribute detection in partially occluded faces. Taking several facial segments and the full face as input, the proposed method takes a data driven approach to determine which attributes are localized in which facial segments. The unique architecture of the network allows each attribute to be predicted by multiple segments, which permits the implementation of committee machine techniques for combining local and global decisions to boost performance. With access to segment-based predictions, SPLITFACE can predict well those attributes which are localized in the visible parts of the face, without having to rely on the presence of the whole face. We use the CelebA and LFWA facial attribute datasets for standard evaluations. We also modify both datasets, to occlude the faces, so that we can evaluate the performance of attribute detection algorithms on partial faces. Our evaluation shows that SPLITFACE significantly outperforms other recent methods especially for partial faces.

Facial attribute analysis has received considerable attention when deep learning techniques made remarkable breakthroughs in this field over the past few years. Deep learning based facial attribute analysis consists of two basic sub-issues: facial attribute estimation (FAE), which recognizes whether facial attributes are present in given images, and facial attribute manipulation (FAM), which synthesizes or removes desired facial attributes. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of deep facial attribute analysis from the perspectives of both estimation and manipulation. First, we sum…

As the social impact of visual recognition has been under scrutiny, several protected-attribute balanced datasets emerged to address dataset bias in imbalanced datasets. However, in facial attribute classification, dataset bias stems from both protected attribute level and facial attribute level, which makes it challenging to construct a multi-attribute-level balanced real dataset. To bridge the gap, we propose an effective pipeline to generate high-quality and sufficient facial images with desired facial attributes and supplement the original dataset to be a balanced dataset at both levels, w…
We introduce a deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) architecture to classify facial attributes and recognize face images simultaneously via a shared learning paradigm to improve the accuracy for facial attribute prediction and face recognition performance. In this method, we use facial attributes as an auxiliary source of information to assist CNN features extracted from the face images to improve the face recognition performance. Specifically, we use a shared CNN architecture that jointly predicts facial attributes and recognize face images simultaneously via a shared learning parameters,…
This paper focuses on improving face recognition performance with a new signature combining implicit facial features with explicit soft facial attributes. This signature has two components: the existing patch-based features and the soft facial attributes. A deep convolutional neural network adapted from state-of-the-art networks is used to learn the soft facial attributes. Then, a signature matcher is introduced that merges the contributions of both patch-based features and the facial attributes. In this matcher, the matching scores computed from patch-based features and the facial attributes …

Representing the spatial properties of facial attributes is a vital challenge for facial attribute recognition (FAR). Recent advances have achieved the reliable performances for FAR, benefiting from the description of spatial properties via extra prior information. However, the extra prior information might not be always available, resulting in the restricted application scenario of the prior-based methods. Meanwhile, the spatial ambiguity of facial attributes caused by inherent spatial diversities of facial parts is ignored. To address these issues, we propose a prior-free method for attribut…
Facial attribute recognition is conventionally computed from a single image. In practice, each subject may have multiple face images. Taking the eye size as an example, it should not change, but it may have different estimation in multiple images, which would make a negative impact on face recognition. Thus, how to compute these attributes corresponding to each subject rather than each single image is a profound work. To address this question, we deploy deep training for facial attributes prediction, and we explore the inconsistency issue among the attributes computed from each single image. T…

Facial Attribute Classification (FAC) has attracted increasing attention in computer vision and pattern recognition. However, state-of-the-art FAC methods perform face detection/alignment and FAC independently. The inherent dependencies between these tasks are not fully exploited. In addition, most methods predict all facial attributes using the same CNN network architecture, which ignores the different learning complexities of facial attributes. To address the above problems, we propose a novel deep multi-task multi-label CNN, termed DMM-CNN, for effective FAC. Specifically, DMM-CNN jointly o…
In this paper, we propose a new deep framework which predicts facial attributes and leverage it as a soft modality to improve face identification performance. Our model is an end to end framework which consists of a convolutional neural network (CNN) whose output is fanned out into two separate branches; the first branch predicts facial attributes while the second branch identifies face images. Contrary to the existing multi-task methods which only use a shared CNN feature space to train these two tasks jointly, we fuse the predicted attributes with the features from the face modality in order…
Facial attribute analysis in the real world scenario is very challenging mainly because of complex face variations. Existing works of analyzing face attributes are mostly based on the cropped and aligned face images. However, this result in the capability of attribute prediction heavily relies on the preprocessing of face detector. To address this problem, we present a novel jointly learned deep architecture for both facial attribute analysis and face detection. Our framework can process the natural images in the wild and our experiments on CelebA and LFWA datasets clearly show that the state-…
In this paper, we present a novel approach to automatic 3D Facial Expression Recognition (FER) based on deep representation of facial 3D geometric and 2D photometric attributes. A 3D face is firstly represented by its geometric and photometric attributes, including the geometry map, normal maps, normalized curvature map and texture map. These maps are then fed into a pre-trained deep convolutional neural network to generate the deep representation. Then the facial expression prediction is simplyachieved by training linear SVMs over the deep representation for different maps and fusing these SV…

Facial image manipulation is a generation task where the output face is shifted towards an intended target direction in terms of facial attribute and styles. Recent works have achieved great success in various editing techniques such as style transfer and attribute translation. However, current approaches are either focusing on pure style transfer, or on the translation of predefined sets of attributes with restricted interactivity. To address this issue, we propose FacialGAN, a novel framework enabling simultaneous rich style transfers and interactive facial attributes manipulation. While pre…

Recently, facial attribute classification (FAC) has attracted significant attention in the computer vision community. Great progress has been made along with the availability of challenging FAC datasets. However, conventional FAC methods usually firstly pre-process the input images (i.e., perform face detection and alignment) and then predict facial attributes. These methods ignore the inherent dependencies among these tasks (i.e., face detection, facial landmark localization and FAC). Moreover, some methods using convolutional neural network are trained based on the fixed loss weights without…

Facial attributes, emerging soft biometrics, must be automatically and reliably extracted from images in order to be usable in stand-alone systems. While recent methods extract facial attributes using deep neural networks (DNNs) trained on labeled facial attribute data, the robustness of deep attribute representations has not been evaluated. Attributes are semantically meaningful characteristics whose applicability widely crosses category boundaries. They are particularly important in describing and recognizing concepts where no explicit training example is given, \textit{e.g., zero-shot learning}. Additionally, since attributes are human describable, they can be used for efficient human-computer interaction. In this paper, we propose to employ semantic segmentation to improve facial attribute prediction. The core idea lies in the fact that many facial attributes describe local properties. In other words, the probability of an att…

Facial attributes are soft-biometrics that allow limiting the search space, e.g., by rejecting identities with non-matching facial characteristics such as nose sizes or eyebrow shapes. In this paper, we investigate how the latest versions of deep convolutional neural networks, ResNets, perform on the facial attribute classification task. We test two loss functions: the sigmoid cross-entropy loss and the Euclidean loss, and find that for classification performance there is little difference between these two. Using an ensemble of three ResNets, we obtain the new state-of-the-art facial attribut…
The great success of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for facial attribute prediction relies on a large amount of labeled images. Facial image datasets are usually annotated by some commonly used attributes (e.g., gender), while labels for the other attributes (e.g., big nose) are limited which causes their prediction challenging. To address this problem, we use a new Multi-Task Learning (MTL) paradigm in which a facial attribute predictor uses the knowledge of other related attributes to obtain a better generalization performance. Here, we leverage MLT paradigm in two problem settings. Fir…

Facial attribute editing aims to manipulate attributes on the human face, e.g., adding a mustache or changing the hair color. Existing approaches suffer from a serious compromise between correct attribute generation and preservation of the other information such as identity and background, because they edit the attributes in the imprecise area. To resolve this dilemma, we propose a progressive attention GAN (PA-GAN) for facial attribute editing. In our approach, the editing is progressively conducted from high to low feature level while being constrained inside a proper attribute area by an at…
The face reenactment is a popular facial animation method where the person's identity is taken from the source image and the facial motion from the driving image. Recent works have demonstrated high quality results by combining the facial landmark based motion representations with the generative adversarial networks. These models perform best if the source and driving images depict the same person or if the facial structures are otherwise very similar. However, if the identity differs, the driving facial structures leak to the output distorting the reenactment result. We propose a novel Facial…

Attribute recognition, particularly facial, extracts many labels for each image.
