The study of identified particle production in proton-proton (pp) collisions as a function of center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) and event charged-particle multiplicity is a key tool for understanding similarities and differences between small and large collision systems. We report on new measurements of the production of identified particles and their dependence on multiplicity and $\sqrt{s}$. Latest results for light flavor hadrons, comprising $π^{\pm}$, $\mathrm{K}^{\pm}$, ${\rm p}(\rm \bar{p})$, single-strange ($\mathrm{K_{S}^{0}}$, $\barΛ$, and $Λ$), multi-strange ($Ξ^{-}$, $\overlineΞ^{+}$, $Ω^{-}$, and $\overlineΩ^{+}$) particles as well as resonances ($\mathrm{K^{*0}}$, $\mathrm{\overline{K}^{*0}}$, $ϕ$), are presented for $\sqrt{s}~=~5.02, 7$, and 13 TeV. The measured minimum bias $p_{\rm T}$ spectra and yields were complemented with multiplicity-dependent measurements for single- and multi-strange hadrons at $\sqrt{s}~=~7$ and $\sqrt{s}~=~13$ TeV. Results are compared to measurements at lower $\sqrt{s}$ as well as to those in proton-lead and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions, respectively at $\sqrt{s}_{\rm NN}~=~5.02$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}_{\rm NN}~=~2.76$ TeV. The results unveil intriguing similarities among collision systems at different $\sqrt{s}$. The production rates of strange hadrons are found to increase more than those of non-strange particles, showing an enhancement pattern with multiplicity which does not depend on the collision energy. These yield ratios take values which are alike for small systems at comparable multiplicities and show smooth evolution with multiplicity across all collision systems. Although the multiplicity dependence of spectral shapes can be qualitatively described by general-purpose Monte Carlo (MC) event generators, the evolution of yield ratios is barely (or not) captured by MC model predictions.
Multiplicity distributions of charged particles for pp collisions at LHC Run 1 energies, from $\sqrt{s}=$ 0.9 to 8 TeV are measured over a wide pseudorapidity range ($-3.4<η<5.0$) for the first time. The results are obtained using the Forward Multiplicity Detector and the Silicon Pixel Detector within ALICE. The results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations, and to the IP-Glasma model.
The pseudorapidity density and multiplicity distributions of charged particles have been the first measurements carried out with the ALICE detector at the LHC. After an introduction on the experiment and some details on the subdetectors relevant for these measurements, results from minimum bias proton-proton collisions at 0.9, 2.36 and 7 TeV are presented. Comparisons with other measurements and model predictions are also discussed.
These proceedings describe the charged-particle pseudorapidity densities and multiplicity distributions measured by the ALICE detector in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ and 7 TeV in specific phase space regions. The pseudorapidity range $|η| < 0.8$, together with $p_{\rm T}$ cuts at 0.15, 0.5 and 1 GeV/$c$ is considered. The classes of events considered are those having at least one charged particle in the kinematical ranges just described. The results obtained by ALICE are compared to Monte Carlo predictions.
Measurements of jet production and jet properties in pp collisions provide a test of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) and form a baseline for similar measurements in heavy ion (A--A) collisions. In this contribution, we report recent ALICE measurements of charged-particle jet production and intra-jet properties, including mean charged-constituent multiplicity and fragmentation distribution for leading jets, in minimum bias pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,$TeV. In addition, the event multiplicity dependence of jet production and jet properties in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,$TeV…
The ALICE experiment has studied strangeness production in different collision systems (pp, p-Pb, Xe-Xe and Pb-Pb) and energies. The ratio of the strange particle yield to pion yield as a function of multiplicity for different collision energies and systems follow a continuously increasing trend ("enhancement") from low multiplicity pp to high-multiplicity Pb-Pb collisions, independent of the initial collision energy and colliding particles. It is also observed that the enhancement is larger for the particles with larger strangeness content. Several other features that were observed in large c…
The multiplicity dependence of charmed-particle production can unveil new information on processes taking part at the parton level and on the interplay of soft and hard production mechanisms in collisions of relativistic hadrons. In this contribution, we report on multiplicity-differential measurements of $\rm{J}/ψ$ in pp and p-Pb collisions studied by the ALICE Collaboration. Comparisons between measurements at different energies are drawn as well as comparisons with $\rm{D}$ mesons. We also discuss the comparison with different theoretical predictions.
The relative J/$ψ$ yields as a function of relative charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV, measured at forward rapidity, are investigated for the first time. A linear increase of the relative J/$ψ$ yield with respect to multiplicity is observed. A comparison of the findings of the present work with the available ALICE measurements obtained in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at forward and mid-rapidity indicates that the increase of J/$ψ$ with multiplicity is independent of energy but exhibits a strong dependence on the rapidity gap between the J/$ψ$ and m…
We investigate properties of jets in proton-proton collisions using two-particle angular correlations. By choosing an analysis approach based on two-particle angular correlations, also the properties of low-energetic jets can be accessed. Observing the strength of the correlation as a function of the charged particle multiplicity reveals jet fragmentation properties as well as the contribution of jets to the overall charged particle multiplicity. Furthermore, the analysis discloses information on the underlying multiple parton interactions. We present results from proton-proton collisions at t…
The production of heavy quarks in pp collisions at the LHC energies provides a reliable test of perturbative QCD calculations. Comparisons of pp and $\pPb$ measurements of their hadronization products allow us to investigate how cold nuclear matter effects affect the heavy-quark production. We present ALICE measurements of azimuthal correlations of prompt D mesons with charged hadrons in pp collisions at $\s$ = 7 TeV and $\pPb$ collisions at $\sNN$ = 5.02 TeV. We also show the per-event D-meson yields as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at $\s$ = 7 TeV.
The self-normalised $ψ(2S)$ yields as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$= 8.16 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, are reported in these proceedings. This measurement represents one of the main tools to understand the role of multiparton interactions and their influence on charmonium production in small systems, i.e pp and pA collisions. The ratio of $ψ(2S)$-over-J/$ψ$ as a function of charged-particle multiplicity is also presented for both pp and p--Pb collisions. The comparison to th…
Azimuthal correlation studies of heavy-flavour particles with charged particles in p--Pb collisions can give an insight into the cold nuclear matter effects \cite{Andronic:2015wma} on heavy-quark production and hadronization into heavy-flavour jets. Multiplicity-dependent measurements of angular correlations of heavy-flavour particles with charged hadrons allow us to investigate the collective behavior of the system and the initial state effects on heavy flavour hadron production. In addition, they can reveal possible modifications of the heavy-quark fragmentation and hadronization at differen…
Comprehensive results on transverse momentum distributions and their ratios for identified light flavor hadrons ($π$, K, p) at low $p_{T}$ and mid-rapidity as a function of charged particle multiplicity are reported for pp collisions at 7 TeV. Particle mass dependent hardening of the spectral shapes in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV were attributed to hydrodynamical flow and quantitatively parameterized with Boltzmann-Gibbs Blast Wave fits. In this contribution, we investigate the existence of collective phenomena in small systems: pp, p-Pb and peripheral Pb-Pb where similar patterns are observe…
Heavy-flavour (HF) quarks, i.e. charm and beauty, are produced in the early stages of ultra-relativistic collisions via hard scattering processes. The measurement of heavy flavour as a function of charged-particle multiplicity not only provides information on how the production mechanisms are influenced by the event activity, but can also be considered as a tool to test the role of multiple parton interactions. Furthermore, charged-particle multiplicity studies are essential for reference measurements, to tune theoretical models and to provide information on the global characteristics of event…
In pp collisions at LHC energies, heavy quarks are produced in initial hard scatterings and then these quarks hadronize in either open heavy-flavor hadrons or quarkonia (e.g. J/$ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, $Υ$). The study of quarkonium production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity links soft and hard processes and allows one to study their interplay. While a linear increase of quarkonium production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity can be reasonably well understood in the context of multi-parton interactions, the observation of deviations with respect to a linear increase requires a …
The study of hadronic resonances plays an important role both in pp and in heavy-ion collisions. Since the lifetimes of short-lived resonances are comparable with the lifetime of the fireball formed in heavy-ion collisions, regeneration and re-scattering effects can modify the measured yields, especially at low transverse momentum. Measurements in pp collisions at different energies constitute a baseline for studies in heavy-ion collisions and provide constraints for tuning QCD-inspired event generators. Furthermore, high multiplicity pp collisions, where the density and the volume of the syst…
One of the key results of the LHC Run 1 was the observation of an enhanced production of strange particles in high multiplicity pp and p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 7 and 5.02 TeV, respectively. The strangeness enhancement is investigated by measuring the evolution with multiplicity of single-strange and multi-strange baryon production relative to non-strange particles. A smooth increase of strange particle yields relative to the non-strange ones with event multiplicity has been observed in such systems. We report the latest results on multiplicity dependence of strange and mult…
Due to the large masses of beauty and charm quarks, their production cross sections can be computed in the framework of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. The correlation of quarkonium and open heavy-flavour hadron yields with charged particles produced in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions can shed light on the interplay between hard and soft mechanisms in particle production. In this proceeding the results from D-meson and J/$ψ$ yields as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in pp and p-Pb collisions are presented. Comparisons to theoretical models are also dis…
Heavy quarks are produced in the early stages of ultra-relativistic hadron collisions via hard scatterings and are an important tool for studying different aspects of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in hadronic collisions. Charged-particle multiplicity gives information on the global characteristics of the event and could be used to characterize particle production mechanisms. In hadronic collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies, there is a significant contribution of multi-parton interactions. The measurement of heavy-flavour yields as a function of charged-particle multiplicity gives …
In this contribution, the production of heavy-flavor hadrons as a function of multiplicity, via the study of the D-meson and heavy-flavor hadron decay leptons self-normalized yields in pp collisions at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV is discussed. Comparisons are made with similar measurements of J/$ψ$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV and various model calculations. The $\mathrm{Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0}}$ and $\mathrm{D^{+}_{s}/D^{0}}$ yield ratios in different multiplicity intervals in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV are also reported. In addition, the ALICE measurement of $\mathrm{Λ_{c}^{+}}…
Fluctuations of various observables in heavy-ion collisions at ultra-relativistic energies have been extensively studied as they provide important signals regarding the formation of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Because of the large number of produced particles in each event, a detailed study of event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations has been proposed as one of the signatures of the phase transition. In addition, the understanding of multiplicity fluctuations is essential for other event-by-event measurements. In the present work, we have calculated the scaled variance ($ω_{\rm ch}=σ^{\rm 2} /…
This paper presents multiplicity measurements that have been performed with ALICE based on minimum-bias data at 0.9 and 2.36 TeV. Results are shown of the pseudorapidity density and the multiplicity distribution in different phase space windows. The analysis and correction procedures are discussed and the results are compared to previous measurements and to model predictions.
Quarkonium production as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity could provide an insight into particle production processes at the partonic level in hadronic collisions. It is believed that multiple partonic interactions play an important role in particle production and affect both soft and hard processes. The study of correlations between quarkonia and charged-particle multiplicity may provide information about this. In this contribution, ALICE measurements of J$/ψ$ and $Υ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity are presented for pp collisions at center-of-mass ene…
Heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are produced in hard-scattering processes and the study of their production in proton--proton (pp) collisions is an important test for calculations based on perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Heavy-flavor production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity provides insight into the processes occurring at the partonic level and the interplay between the hard and soft particle production mechanisms in pp collisions. In this contribution, measurements of open heavy-flavor production as a function of multiplicity, via the study of the $\mathrm{D}$-mes…
The study of multiplicity dependent di-hadron angular correlations allows us to assess the contribution of multiple-parton interactions to particle production. We will review these measurements in pp and p-Pb collisions with the ALICE detector at the LHC and discuss the results in the context of centrality determination and other multiplicity dependent observables in p-Pb.
The study of the J/$ψ$ production in pp collisions provides important information on perturbative and non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Using high multiplicity pp events, we can study how charmonium production depends on the event activity. These measurements are used to investigate the possible influence of multiple partonic interactions to the J/$ψ$ production and the interplay between soft and hard processes. In this work we report on studies of J/$ψ$ production as a function of event multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at mid-rapidity with ALICE. The J/$ψ$ are recons…
We present the first preliminary results on photon multiplicity measurements at LHC at forward pseudorapidity (2.3 $\textless$ $η$ $\textless$ 3.9) in proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. The multiplicity distribution is found to be reasonably well explained by a double Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD). The average photon multiplicity increases logarithmically with $\sqrt{s}$. It is found that none of the models we used (PYTHIA6D6T, PHOJET, and HERWIG) could explain the data.
At the LHC collision energies, multiple parton interactions (MPI) are a key ingredient for particle production models including hard scale processes like heavy-quark production (charm and beauty). Quarkonium measurements in high-multiplicity proton-proton (pp) collisions can shed light on the role of MPI at such hard momentum scales, as well as on the interplay between hard and soft particle production mechanisms. In addition, quarkonium production measurements in minimum bias pp collisions, besides serving as a reference for heavy-ion collisions collected at the same center-of-mass energy, re…
We present multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of inclusive photons at forward rapidity in proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at $\sqrt{s\rm_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV using the data obtained from Photon Multiplicity Detector (PMD) of ALICE. The centrality dependence of pseudorapidity distributions of inclusive photons is also studied. Results are compared with the previous ALICE measurements of charged-particle production and with theoretical predictions from Monte Carlo models, DPMJET and HIJING.
Potential of the charm quark as a probe to study the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is best harnessed when its production mechanisms are disentangled from its propagation through the QGP. Proton-proton (pp) collisions help us to study charmed hadron production mechanisms. The measurement of D-meson yields in pp collisions as a function of the multiplicity of produced particles allows one to gain some insight into the processes occurring in the collision at a microscopic level. Here, the preliminary results are presented from this measurement at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV. The analysis strategy, the applied co…
Recent measurements in high-multiplicity pp and p-A collisions have revealed that these small collision systems exhibit collective-like behaviour, formerly thought to be achievable only in heavy-ion collisions. To understand the origins of these unexpected phenomena, event shape observables can be exploited, as they serve as a powerful tool to disentangle soft and hard contributions to particle production. Here, results on the production of light flavor hadrons for different classes of unweighted transverse spherocity ($S_{\rm 0}^{p_{\rm T}= 1}$) and relative transverse activity ($R_{\rm{T}}$)…
At LHC energies, the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of particle production is a topic of considerable interest in $pp$ collisions. It has been argued that multiple partonic interactions play an important role in particle production mechanisms, not only affecting the soft processes but also the hard processes. Recently, ALICE has measured $J/ψ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity to study the correlation between soft and hard processes. In this contribution, we present the $J/ψ$ production versus multiplicity for $pp$ and $p-Pb$ collisions measured by ALICE. We c…
The study of the sphericity of primary charged particles in minimum bias proton-proton collisions at 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC is presented. The mean sphericity as a function of multiplicity is reported for events with different hardness. The ALICE results show a growing transverse sphericity with multiplicity for all collision energies, with a steeper rise at low multiplicity. The tendency of the MC generators is opposite at high multiplicity.
Multiplicity-dependent measurements of identified particle production led to the discovery of collective-like behavior in pp collisions at the LHC. Better understanding of the effects attributed to well-understood physics, like multiple hard scatterings, is required to establish whether this behaviour is truly collective in origin. Experimentally, those effects can be controlled using event shapes, like transverse spherocity, which allows the classification of pp collisions either as jetty or isotropic events. The transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra of light-flavor hadrons in pp collisio…
Quarkonia represent excellent tools for understanding the role of multiparton interactions (MPI) in small systems, i.e., pp and p-A collisions. Probing MPI with quarkonia can be done directly by looking at quarkonium associated production, or indirectly by studying the multiplicity dependence of quarkonium production. In these proceedings, the results from the ALICE experiment on direct and indirect MPI probes are discussed. The self-normalized yields of charmonium production as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in pp and p--Pb collisions at \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV and \sqrt{s_{NN} = 8…
ALICE has performed several measurements aimed at understanding the collective-like effects observed in small collision systems. New approaches may be needed to clarify particle-production mechanisms in high-multiplicity pp collisions. Transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra as a function of charged-particle multiplicity show intriguing features. For example, data exhibit a stronger-than-linear increase of the self-normalised high-$p_{\rm T}$ particle yields versus multiplicity. In order to understand the role of auto-correlations on these effects, it has been proposed to use the underlying …
Jets are produced by processes involving high momentum transfer of initial partons at high energies. Comparing jet production in pp and nucleus-nucleus collisions will allow us to study the jet-quenching effect caused by the hot and dense QCD medium produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions when energetic partons traverse the medium. In particular, systematic studies of jet production in different multiplicity environments will provide in-depth understanding of the medium properties and their evolution from small to large systems. In small systems and high multiplicity events, the bulk properties…
In high-energy hadronic collisions, hard parton scatterings with large momentum transfers are prerequisites for the formation of hard and rare probes. In heavy-ion collisions, these probes---final state particles related to the early hard-parton scatterings---serve as a powerful tool to explore the whole evolution of the medium including the quark--gluon plasma (QGP) stage. Hard probes in proton-proton (pp) collisions test perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) processes and hadronization, and provide a reference for the nuclear collision systems. High-multiplicity pp collisions provide a …
ALICE is one of four large experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, specially designed to study particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Located 52 meters underground with 28 meters of overburden rock, it has also been used to detect muons produced by cosmic ray interactions in the upper atmosphere. In this paper, we present the multiplicity distribution of these atmospheric muons and its comparison with Monte Carlo simulations. This analysis exploits the large size and excellent tracking capability of the ALICE Time Projection Chamber. A special emphas…
The availability at the LHC of the largest collision energy in pp collisions allows a significant advance in the measurement of $J/ψ$ production as function of event multiplicity. The interesting relative increase observed with data at the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 7\,\mathrm{TeV}$ and at RHIC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.2\,\mathrm{TeV}$ is studied now at unprecedented multiplicities at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}$. The measurement at mid-rapidity in the dielectron channel with ALICE is presented and discussed in comparison to predictions from available theoretical models and to data at lower energies.
Heavy quarkonium production is an excellent tool to test both perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, as perturbative QCD can describe the heavy quark production process, while the formation of the quarkonium bound state involves non-perturbative aspects. In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, a deconfined state of QCD matter, made of free quarks and gluons, called quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is expected to be formed. To probe such an environment, the study of quarkonium production is an important tool as the heavy quarks are produced during the initial stage of the collision and experience th…
The study of identified particle production as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) and event multiplicity in proton-proton (pp) collisions at different center-of-mass energies ($\sqrt{s}$) is a key tool for understanding similarities and differences between small and large collisions systems. We report on the production of $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^{0}_{S}$, $p (\bar{p})$, $Λ(\barΛ)$, $Ξ^{\pm}$ and $Ω^{\pm}$ measured in pp collisions in a wide range of center-of-mass energies with ALICE. The multiplicity dependence of identified particle yields is presented for $\sqrt{s} = \textr…
We report on the first measurement of J/Psi production as a function of charged particle pseudo-rapidity density dN_ch/d_eta in pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. J/Psi mesons are detected down to p_T = 0 via their decays into e+e- pairs at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9) and into mu+mu- pairs at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4). dN_ch/d_eta is measured within |eta| < 1. We compare results in the two different J/Psi rapidity ranges. Preliminary PYTHIA simulations are also presented.
The particle identification capabilities of the ALICE experiment are unique among the four major LHC experiments. The working principles and excellent performance of the central barrel detectors in a high-multiplicity environment are presented as well as two physics examples: the extraction of transverse momentum spectra of charged pions, kaons, protons, and the observation of the anti-4He-nucleus.
Proton-proton (pp) collisions have been used extensively as a reference for the study of interactions of larger colliding systems at the LHC. Recent measurements performed in high-multiplicity pp and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions have shown features that are reminiscent of those observed in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions. In this context, the study of identified particle spectra and yields as a function of multiplicity is a key tool for the understanding of similarities and differences between small and large systems. We report on the production of pions, kaons, protons, $K^{0}_{\rm S}$, $Λ$, $Ξ…
The charged particle multiplicity distribution is one of the first measurements that ALICE will be able to perform. The knowledge of this basic property at a new energy is needed to configure Monte Carlo generators correctly with the aim of understanding the background of other, especially rare, processes including new physics. It allows to study the scaling behaviour and to verify model predictions. The unfolding of the measurement is a non-trivial task due to the finite precision and acceptance of the detector. Solutions are based on chi2 minimization or iteratively using Bayes' theorem. Bot…
Exploring Collective Effects in Small Collision Systems via Light-Flavour Particle Production in High-Multiplicity pp Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV in ALICE
The measurement of (anti)nuclei production in pp, p-A and A-A collisions at ultrarelativistic energies is important to understand hadronization. The excellent tracking and particle identification capabilities of ALICE make it the most suited detector at the LHC to study light (anti)nuclei produced in high-energy hadronic collisions. (Anti)nuclei with mass numbers up to 4, such as (anti)deuterons, (anti)tritons, (anti)$^3$He and (anti)$^4$He have been successfully identified in ALICE at midrapidity ($|η|<$0.9). In this contribution, multiplicity dependent results on the yields, nuclei-to-proton…
The study of energy and multiplicity dependence of strange hadron production in proton-proton collisions provides a powerful tool to understand similarities and differences between small and large collision systems. In order to better understand the origin of strangeness enhancement in pp new multi-differential analyses have been performed. The first separates the contribution of soft and hard processes, such as jets, to strange hadron production through two-particle correlation techniques. The second exploits the concept of the effective energy available for particle production in the event, …
The pseudorapidity density and multiplicity distribution of charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, were measured in the central pseudorapidity region |$η$| < 1. Comparisons are made with previous measurements at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 TeV and 2.36 TeV. At $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV, for events with at least one charged particle in |$η$| < 1, we obtain dNch/deta = 6.01 $\pm$ 0.01 (stat.) $^{+0.20}_{-0.12}$ (syst.). This corresponds to an increase of 57.6% $\pm$ 0.4% (stat.) $^{+3.6}_{-1.8}$% (syst.) relative to collisions at 0.9 TeV, …
The energy densities reached in high-energy hadronic collisions at the LHC allow significant production of light (anti)nuclei. Their production yields have been measured as a function of $p_{\rm T}$ and charged-particle multiplicity in different collision systems and at different center-of-mass energies by ALICE. One of the most interesting results obtained from such a large variety of experimental data is that the dominant production mechanism of light (anti)nuclei seems to depend solely on the event charged-particle multiplicity. Evidence for this comes from the continuous evolution of the d…
Measurements of charged-particle production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{\rm NN}=5.02$ TeV in the toward, away and transverse regions are discussed. These three regions are defined event by event relative to the track with the largest transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}^{\rm trig}$). The transverse region is sensitive to the underlying event (UE), but it also includes contributions from initial- and final-state radiation (ISR-FSR). Therefore, it is further subdivided in two regions, defined according to their relative multiplicity: trans-max (the sub-transverse region with the largest m…
Heavy-flavour hadrons, i. e. hadrons carrying charm or beauty quarks, are a well-suited probe to study the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. For this reason, measurements of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays have been performed in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC with the ALICE detector. Results for the nuclear modification factors ($R_{\rm{pA}}$ and $R_{\rm{AA}}$) support a final-state energy loss of heavy quarks in central Pb-Pb collisions and, in semi-central collisions a positive elliptic flow coefficient $v_{2}$ of electrons from heavy-flavour…
Results on the production of $π^{\pm}$, $\textrm{K}^{\pm}$, $\textrm{p}(\bar{\textrm{p}})$, $Λ(\barΛ)$, $Ξ^{-} \left(\barΞ^{+}\right)$ and $Ω^{-} \left(\barΩ^{+}\right)$ at midrapidity (${|y|<0.5}$) as a function of multiplicity in $\sqrt{s}~=~7~\textrm{TeV}$ pp collisions are reported. Transverse momentum distributions and integrated yields are compared to expectations from statistical hadronization models along with results from different colliding systems and center-of-mass energies. The evolution of spectral shapes with multiplicity show similar patterns to those seen in p-Pb and Pb-Pb col…
The discovery of correlations between particles separated by several units of pseudorapidity in high-multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions, reminiscent of structures observed in Pb-Pb collisions, was a challenge to traditional ideas about collectivity in heavy ion collisions. In order to further explore long-range correlations and provide information to theoretical models, correlations between forward trigger muons and mid-rapidity associated hadrons were measured in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mbox{NN}}} = 5.02~\mbox{TeV}$. The results demonstrate that the nearside and awayside ridges extend …
Identical neutral kaon pair correlations are measured in 7 TeV pp collisions in the ALICE experiment. K0s-K0s correlation functions are formed in 3 multiplicity X 4 kT bins. The femtoscopic kaon source parameters Rinv and lambda are extracted from these correlation functions by fitting a (femtoscopy) X (PYTHIA) model to them, PYTHIA accounting for the non-flat baseline found in pp collisions. Source parameters are obtained from a fit which includes quantum statistics and final-state interactions of the a0/f0 resonance. K0s-K0s correlations show a systematic increase in Rinv for increasing mult…
The ALICE collaboration measured charged particle production in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV Pb--Pb collisions at the LHC. We report on results on charged particle multiplicity and transverse momentum spectra. All the results are presented as a function of the centrality of the collision, estimated with a Glauber Monte Carlo fit to multiplicity distributions reconstructed in various detectors. The applicability of the Glauber model at LHC energies, the precision of the centrality determination and the related systematic uncertainties are discussed in detail. Particles are tracked in the pseudorapi…
