The structure and spectrum of the accretion shock have been self-consistently simulated for a wide range of parameters typical for Classical T Tauri Stars (CTTS). Radiative cooling of the shocked gas was calculated, taking into account the self-absorption and non-equilibrium (time-dependent) effects in the level populations. These effects modify the standard cooling curve for an optically thin plasma in coronal equilibrium, however the shape of high-temperature ($T>3\times10^5$ K) part of the curve remains unchanged. The applied methods allow us to smoothly describe the transition from the cooling flow to the hydrostatic stellar atmosphere. Thanks to this approach, it has been found that the narrow component of HeII lines is formed predominantly in the irradiated stationary atmosphere (hotspot), i.e. at velocities of the settling gas $<2$ km s$^{-1}$. The structure of the pre-shock region is calculated simultaneously with the heated atmosphere. The simulation shows that the pre-shock gas produces a noticeable emission component in HeII lines and practically does not manifest itself in HeI lines ($λλ$ 5876, 10830 Å). The UV spectrum of the hotspot is distorted by the pre-shock gas, namely numerous red-shifted emission and absorption lines overlap each other forming a pseudo-continuum. The spectrum of the accretion region at high pre-shock densities $\sim10^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$ is fully formed in the in-falling gas and can be qualitatively described as a spectrum of a star with an effective temperature derived from the Stefan-Boltzmann law via the full energy flux.
Planar acoustically dominated magneto\-hydro\-dynamic waves are initiated at the high-$β$ base of a simulated 2D isothermal stratified atmosphere with potential magnetic field exhibiting both open and closed field regions as well as neutral points. They shock on their way upward toward the Alfvén-acoustic equipartition surface $a=c$, where $a$ and $c$ are the Alfvén and sound speeds respectively. Expanding on recent 1.5D findings that such shocks mode-convert to fast shocks and slow smoothed waves on passing through $a=c$, we explore the implications for these more complex magnetic geometries.…
Our current understanding of the chemistry and mass-loss processes in solar-like stars at the end of their evolution depends critically on the description of convection, pulsations and shocks in the extended stellar atmosphere. Three-dimensional hydrodynamical stellar atmosphere models provide observational predictions, but so far the resolution to constrain the complex temperature and velocity structures seen in the models has been lacking. Here we present submillimeter continuum and line observations that resolve the atmosphere of the asymptotic giant branch star W Hya. We show that hot gas …
The formation of shocks within the solar atmosphere remains one of the few observable signatures of energy dissipation arising from the plethora of magnetohydrodynamic waves generated close to the solar surface. Active region observations offer exceptional views of wave behavior and its impact on the surrounding atmosphere. The stratified plasma gradients present in the lower solar atmosphere allow for the potential formation of many theorized shock phenomena. In this study, using chromospheric Ca II 854.2nm spectropolarimetric data of a large sunspot, we examine fluctuations in the plasma par…
A physical analysis and mathematical formulation of the structure of an accretion shock wave in the case of young stars are given. Some results are presented, and the dependence of the structure of the shock on various parameters is investigated. In the general case, the relative intensities and profiles of lines in the spectra of T Tauri stars should depend on the velocity and density of the infalling gas, as well as on the accretion geometry. The calculation results may serve as a base for elucidating the nature of the activity of young stars.
SPEC_PULS describes a suite of computer programs to simulate the emergent spectrum from a radially-pulsating star. It combines a Christy-type non-linear pulsation code with classical stellar atmosphere codes. The principal aim is to interpret the dynamical spectrum of the radially pulsating extreme helium star V652 Her, which shows a strong shock at minimum radius. The components are general enough to treat other classes of radial pulsation. The theoretical spectrum from a shocked pulsation model shows line doubling, with the blue component emerging at standstill velocity and accelerating blue…
Emission line studies from Hii regions in galaxies require tools for the inversion of line ratios into desired physical properties. These tools generally come in form of diagnostic ratios/diagrams that are based on grids of photoionisation models. An important input to the photoionisation models is the stellar atmosphere spectrum of the ionising sources. The current omission of shocks in the calculation of the former set of models could threaten the accuracy of the physical interpretation of emission line ratios from Hii regions. Current stellar atmosphere models that are crucial inputs to the…
RRab stars are large amplitude pulsating stars in which the pulsation is associated with strong shock wake propagating in the atmosphere. The objective of this study is to provide a general overview of the dynamical structure of the atmosphere occurring over a typical pulsation cycle. We report new high-resolution observations with high time resolution of H$α$ and sodium lines in the brightest RR Lyrae star of the sky: RR Lyr (HD 182989). A detailed analysis of line profile variations over the whole pulsation cycle is performed to understand the dynamical structure of the atmosphere. The main …
Cosmic rays and solar energetic particles may be accelerated to relativistic energies by shock waves in astrophysical plasmas. On the Sun, shocks and particle acceleration are often associated with the eruption of magnetized plasmoids, called coronal mass ejections (CMEs). However, the physical relationship between CMEs and shock particle acceleration is not well understood. Here, we use extreme ultraviolet, radio and white-light imaging of a solar eruptive event on 22 September 2011 to show that a CME-induced shock (Alfvén Mach number 2.4$^{+0.7}_{-0.8}$) was coincident with a coronal wave an…
We test state-of-the-art model atmospheres for young very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the infrared, by comparing the predicted synthetic photometry over 1.2-24 μm to the observed photometry of M-type spectral templates in star-forming regions. We find that (1) in both early and late young M types, the model atmospheres imply effective temperatures (Teff) several hundred Kelvin lower than predicted by the standard Pre-Main Sequence spectral type-Teff conversion scale (based on theoretical evolutionary models). It is only in the mid-M types that the two temperature estimates agree. (2) Th…
The low solar atmosphere is composed of mostly neutral particles, but the importance of the magnetic field for understanding observed dynamics means that interactions between charged and neutral particles play a very important role in controlling the macroscopic fluid motions. As the exchange of momentum between fluids, essential for the neutral fluid to effectively feel the Lorentz force, is through collisional interactions, the relative timescale of these interactions to the dynamic timescale determines whether a single-fluid model or, when the dynamic frequency is higher, the more detailed …
The plasma of the lower solar atmosphere consists of mostly neutral particles, whereas the upper solar atmosphere is mostly ionised particles and electrons. A shock that propagates upwards in the solar atmosphere therefore undergoes a transition where the dominant fluid is either neutral or ionised. An upwards propagating shock also passes a point where the sound and Alfvén speed are equal. At this point the energy of the acoustic shock can separated into fast and slow components. How the energy is distributed between the two modes depends on the angle of magnetic field. The separation of neut…
Vortex motions are frequently observed on the solar photosphere. These motions may play a key role in the transport of energy and momentum from the lower atmosphere into the upper solar atmosphere, contributing to coronal heating. The lower solar atmosphere also consists of complex networks of flux tubes that expand and merge throughout the chromosphere and upper atmosphere. We perform numerical simulations to investigate the behaviour of vortex driven waves propagating in a pair of such flux tubes in a non-force-free equilibrium with a realistically modelled solar atmosphere. The two flux tub…
In this work we present a mathematical model for the propagation of the shock waves that occur in graded density profiles. These waves can occur in a wide range of astrophysical events, such as collisions in planetary and stellar atmospheres, common envelope explosions and peculiar type Ia supernovae. The behaviour of the shock wave and its evolution can be modelled using type II self similar solutions. In such solutions the evolution of the shock wave is determined by boundary conditions at the shock front and a singular point in the shocked region. We show how the evolution can be determined…
We study the upward propagation of a localized velocity pulse that is initially launched below the transition region within the solar atmosphere. The pulse quickly steepens into a shock, which may lead to the formation of spicules. We solve two-dimensional time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic equations numerically to find spatial and temporal dynamics of spicules. The numerical simulations show that the strong initial pulse may lead to the quasi periodic rising of chromospheric material into the lower corona in the form of spicules. The periodicity results from the nonlinear wake that is formed …
During intensive/comparative studies with Preston's spectroscopic works (1961, 1962, 1964 & 1965) on RR Lyrae atmospheric phenomena, I unexpectedly found the existence of hypersonic shock waves (Chadid 1996 & 2008), that are strongly connected with the turbulence amplification mechanism (Chadid 1996b) and the Blazhko modulation (1997). Here I will show how the hypersonic shocks are at the origin of helium line formation and connected with the helium emission and line doubling detected by Preston (2009, 2011). I will present new neutral and single ionized helium line data in the hypersonic Blaz…
Although observational data unequivocally point out to the presence of chromospheres in red giant stars, no attempts have been made so far to model them using 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres. We therefore compute an exploratory 3D hydrodynamical model atmosphere for a cool red giant in order to study the dynamical and thermodynamic properties of its chromosphere, as well as the influence of the chromosphere on its observable properties. 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations are carried out with the CO5BOLD model atmosphere code for a star with the atmospheric parameters (Teff=4010 K, log …
This paper presents generalized forms of jump relations for one dimensional shock waves propagating in a dusty gas. The dusty gas is assumed to be a mixture of a perfect gas and spherically small solid particles, in which solid particle are continuously distributed. The generalized jump relations reduce to the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions for shocks in an idea gas when the mass fraction (concentration) of solid particles in the mixture becomes zero. The jump relations for pressure, density, temperature, particle velocity, and change-in-entropy across the shock front are derived in terms of upst…
Atmospheric modeling of low-gravity (VL-G) young brown dwarfs remains a challenge. The presence of very thick clouds has been suggested because of their extremely red near-infrared (NIR) spectra, but no cloud models provide a good fit to the data with a radius compatible with evolutionary models for these objects. We show that cloudless atmospheres assuming a temperature gradient reduction caused by fingering convection provides a very good model to match the observed VL-G NIR spectra. The sequence of extremely red colors in the NIR for atmospheres with effective temperature from ~2000 K down …
We obtained medium-resolution near-infrared spectra of seven young M9.5-L3 dwarfs classified in the optical. We aim to confirm the low surface gravity of the objects in the NIR. We also test whether atmospheric models correctly represent the formation and the settling of dust clouds in the atmosphere of young late-M and L dwarfs. We used ISAAC at VLT to obtain the spectra of the targets. We compared them to those of mature and young BD, and young late-type companions to nearby stars with known ages, in order to identify and study gravity-sensitive features. We computed spectral indices weakly …
We have searched the Gaia DR2 catalogue for previously unknown hot white dwarfs in the direction of young open star clusters. The aim of this experiment was to try and extend the initial-final mass relation (IFMR) to somewhat higher masses, potentially providing a tension with the Chandrasekhar limit currently thought to be around 1.38 M$_{\odot}$. We discovered a particularly interesting white dwarf in the direction of the young $\sim$150 Myr old cluster Messier 47 (NGC 2422). All Gaia indicators (proper motion, parallax, location in the Gaia colour-magnitude diagram) suggest that it is a clu…
The properties of 2M1207b, a young (~ 8 Myr) planet-mass companion, have lacked a satisfactory explanation for some time. The combination of low luminosity, red near-IR colors, and L-type near-IR spectrum (previously consistent with Teff ~ 1600K) implies an abnormally small radius. Early explanations for the apparent underluminosity of 2M1207b invoked an edge-on disk or the remnant of a recent protoplanetary collision. The discovery of a second planet-mass object (HR8799b) with similar luminosity and colors as 2M1207b indicates that a third explanation, one of a purely atmospheric nature, is m…
Dynamical few-body encounters in the dense cores of young massive star clusters are responsible for the loss of a significant fraction of their massive stellar content. Some of the escaping (runaway) stars move through the ambient medium supersonically and can be revealed via detection of their bow shocks (visible in the infrared, optical or radio). In this paper, which is the second of a series of papers devoted to the search for OB stars running away from young (several Myr) Galactic clusters and OB associations, we present the results of the search for bow shocks around the star-forming reg…
The structure of a circumstellar envelope around a young binary T Tauri star is considered. The supersonic orbital motion of the system components in the envelope gas leads to the formation of bow shocks around the star. Two- and three-dimensional numerical modeling indicates an important role of these shocks in the formation of the structure of the circumbinary envelope. In particular, for systems with circular orbits, the size of the central region of the envelope that is not filled with matter (the gap) is essentially determined by the parameters of the bow shocks. These modeling results ar…
This article summarizes the processes of high-energy emission in young stellar objects. Stars of spectral type A and B are called Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars in this stage, all later spectral types are termed classical T Tauri stars (CTTS). Both types are studied by high-resolution X-ray and UV spectroscopy and modeling. Three mechanisms contribute to the high-energy emission from CTTS: 1) CTTS have active coronae similar to main-sequence stars, 2) the accreted material passes through an accretion shock at the stellar surface, which heats it to a few MK, and 3) some CTTS drive powerful outflows…
We report 2D time-dependent non-linear magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of waves in the atmospheres of roAp stars. We explore a grid of simulations in a wide parameter space. The aim of our study is to understand the influence of the atmosphere and the magnetic field on the propagation and reflection properties of magneto-acoustic waves, formation of shocks and node layers.
We have determined the abundances of several chemical elements in the atmosphere of HD 87240, a member of the young open cluster NGC 3114. We have used the code ATLAS9 to compute a model atmosphere for HD 87240 for the effective temperature and surface gravity derived from Stromgren's photometry A grid of synthetic spectra has been computed using SYNSPEC49 and adjusted to the UVES spectrum of HD 87240 to determine the abundances of several chemical elements using the latest critically evaluated atomic data from NIST. We find underabundances of light elements and large overabundances of heavy e…
Synchrotron emission has recently been detected in the jet of a massive protostar, providing further evidence that certain jet formation characteristics for young stars are similar to those found for highly relativistic jets from AGN. We present data at 325 and 610 MHz taken with the GMRT of the young, low-mass star DG Tau, an analog of the Sun soon after its birth. This is the first investigation of a low-mass YSO at at such low frequencies. We detect emission with a synchrotron spectral index in the proximity of the DG Tau jet and interpret this emission as a prominent bow shock associated w…
Accretion onto Classical T Tauri stars is thought to take place through the action of magnetospheric processes, with gas in the inner disk being channeled onto the star's surface by the stellar magnetic field lines. Young stars are known to accrete material in a time-variable manner and the source of this variability remains an open problem, particularly on the shortest (~ day) timescales. Using one-dimensional time-dependent numerical simulations that follow the field line geometry, we find that for plausibly realistic young stars, steady-state transonic accretion occurs naturally in the abse…
Solar energetic particles acceleration by a shock wave accompanying a coronal mass ejection (CME) is studied. The description of the accelerated particle spectrum evolution is based on the numerical calculation of the diffusive transport equation with a set of realistic parameters. The relation between the CME and the shock speeds, which depend on the initial CME radius, is determined. Depending on the initial CME radius, its speed, and the magnetic energy of the scattering Alfven waves, the accelerated particle spectrum is established during 10-60 minutes from the beginning of CME motion. The…
Although all-sky surveys have led to the discovery of dozens of young planets, little is known about their atmospheres. Here, we present multi-wavelength transit data for the super Neptune-sized exoplanet, K2-33b -- the youngest (~10 Myr) transiting exoplanet to-date. We combined photometric observations of K2-33 covering a total of 33 transits spanning >2 years, taken from K2, MEarth, Hubble, and Spitzer. The transit photometry spanned from the optical to the near-infrared (0.6-4.5$μ$m), enabling us to construct a transmission spectrum of the planet. We find that the optical transit depths ar…
As part of the project Pathways to Habitability (http://path.univie.ac.at/), we study the properties of the stellar winds of low-mass and Sun-like stars, and their influences on the atmospheres of potentially habitable planets. For this purpose, we combine mapping of stellar magnetic fields with magnetohydrodynamic wind models.
A significant fraction of massive stars are moving supersonically through the interstellar medium (ISM), either due to disruption of a binary system or ejection from their parent star cluster. The interaction of their wind with the ISM produces a bow shock. In late evolutionary stages these stars may undergo rapid transitions from red to blue and vice versa on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, with accompanying rapid changes to their stellar winds and bow shocks. Recent 3D simulations of the bow shock produced by the nearby runaway red supergiant (RSG) Betelgeuse, under the assumption of a cons…
We present X-ray spectral analysis of the accreting young star TW Hydrae from a 489 ks observation using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating. The spectrum provides a rich set of diagnostics for electron temperature T_e, electron density N_e, hydrogen column density N_H, relative elemental abundances and velocities and reveals its source in 3 distinct regions of the stellar atmosphere: the stellar corona, the accretion shock, and a very large extended volume of warm postshock plasma. The presence of Mg XII, Si XIII, and Si XIV emission lines in the spectrum requires coronal structures …
Despite their importance for determining the evolution of the Earth's atmosphere and surface conditions, the evolutionary histories of the Earth's atmospheric CO$_2$ abundance during the Archean eon and the Sun's activity are poorly constrained. In this study, we apply a state-of-the-art physical model for the upper atmosphere of the Archean Earth to study the effects of different atmospheric CO$_2$/N$_2$ mixing ratios and solar activity levels on the escape of the atmosphere to space. We find that unless CO$_2$ was a major constituent of the atmosphere during the Archean eon, enhanced heating…
In order to complete the knowledge of the magnetic field and of its influence during the transition from Asymptotic Giant Branch to Planetary Nebulae stages, we have undertaken a search for magnetic fields at the surface of Mira stars. We used spectropolarimetric observations, collected with the Narval instrument at TBL, in order to detect - with Least Squares Deconvolution method - a Zeeman signature in the visible part of the spectrum. We present the first spectropolarimetric observations of the S-type Mira star chi Cyg, performed around its maximum light. We have detected a polarimetric sig…
The NaD1 line in the solar spectrum is sometimes attributed to the solar chromosphere. We study its formation in quiet-Sun network and internetwork. We first present high-resolution profile-resolved images taken in this line with the imaging spectrometer IBIS at the Dunn Solar Telescope and compare these to simultaneous chromospheric images taken in Ca 8542 and Halpha. We then model NaD1 formation by performing 3D NLTE profile synthesis for a snapshot from a 3D radiation-magnetohydrodynamics simulation. We find that most NaD1 brightness is not chromospheric but samples the magnetic concentrati…
We present results from mid-IR spectroscopic observations of two young supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) done with the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}. We imaged SNRs B0509-67.5 and B0519-69.0 with {\it Spitzer} in 2005, and follow-up spectroscopy presented here confirms the presence of warm, shock heated dust, with no lines present in the spectrum. We use model fits to {\it Spitzer} IRS data to estimate the density of the postshock gas. Both remnants show asymmetries in the infrared images, and we interpret bright spots as places where the forward shock is running in…
X-rays/EUV radiation emitted from wind-embedded shocks in hot, massive stars can affect the ionization balance in their outer atmospheres, and can be the mechanism responsible for the production of highly ionized species. To allow for these processes in the context of spectral analysis, we have implemented such emission into our unified, NLTE model atmosphere/spectrum synthesis code FASTWIND. The shock structure and corresponding emission is calculated as a function of user-supplied parameters. We account for a temperature and density stratification inside the post-shock cooling zones, calcula…

We consider linear and nonlinear waves in a stratified hydrostatic fluid within a channel of variable area, under the restriction of one-dimensional flow. We derive a modified version of Riemann's invariant that is related to the wave luminosity. This quantity obeys a simple dynamical equation in linear theory, from which the rules of wave reflection are easily discerned; and it is adiabatically conserved in the high-frequency limit. Following a suggestion by Lighthill, we apply the linear adiabatic invariant to predict mildly nonlinear waves. This incurs only moderate error. We find that Ligh…
Context. Accreted material onto CTTSs is expected to form a hot quasi-periodic plasma structure that radiates in X-rays. Simulations of this phenomenon only partly match with observations. They all rely on a static model for the chromosphere model and on the assumption that radiation and matter are decoupled. Aims. We explore the effects on the structure and on the dynamics of the accretion flow of both a shock-heated chromosphere and of the coupling between radiation and hydrodynamics. Methods. We simulate accretion columns falling onto a stellar chromosphere using the 1D ALE code AstroLabE. …
A steady-state structure and spectrum of the accretion zone at the surface of T Tauri stars are numerically simulated. This modeling uses well-developed methods of the theory of stellar atmospheres with inclusion of the effects of the gas motion (advection and the doppler shift of the lines). The spectrum $I_ν(μ)$ and cooling rate of shocked gas are calculated. It is found that at the pre-shock densities $N_0>10^{13}$ cm$^{-3}$ helium and hydrogen lines show a red-shifted absorption, significantly broadened by the Stark effect.
Our Solar System originated in interstellar gas and dust; the latter is in the form of amorphous silicate particles and carbonaceous dust. The composition of cometary material shows that a significant fraction of the amorphous silicates was transformed into crystalline form during the early evolution of the protosolar nebula. How and when this transformation happened has been controversial, with the main options being heating by the young Sun or shock heating. Here we report mid-infrared features in the outburst spectrum of the young solar-like star EX Lupi that were not present in quiescence.…
In order to understand the atmospheres as well as the formation mechanism of giant planets formed outside our solar system, the next decade will require an investment in studies of isolated young brown dwarfs. In this white paper we summarize the opportunity for discovery space in the coming decade of isolated brown dwarfs with planetary masses in young stellar associations within 150 pc. We suggest that next generation telescopes and beyond need to invest in characterizing young brown dwarfs in order to fully understand the atmospheres of sibling directly imaged exoplanets as well as the tail…

M stars are powerful emitters of far-ultraviolet light. Over long timescales, a significant, possibly dominant, fraction of this emission is produced by stellar flares. Characterizing this emission is critical to understanding the atmospheres of the stars producing it and the atmospheric evolution of the orbiting planets subjected to it. Ultraviolet emission is known to be elevated for several hundred million years after M stars form. Whether the same is true of ultraviolet flare activity is a key concern for the evolution of exoplanet atmospheres. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations by …
We study the propagation and dissipation of magnetohydrodynamic waves in a set of numerical models that each include a solar--like stratified atmosphere and a magnetic field with a null point. All simulations have the same magnetic field configuration but different transition region heights. Compressive wave packets introduced in the photospheric portion of the simulations refract towards the null and collapse it into a current sheet, which then undergoes reconnection. The collapsed null forms a current sheet due to a strong magnetic pressure gradient caused by the inability of magnetic pertur…
We report the detection and investigate the properties of high-excitation lambda-doubling line emission of hydroxyl (OH) detected towards three asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (W Hya, R Dor, and IK Tau) using ALMA. The OH lines are produced very close to the central stars and seem optically thin and with no maser effect. We analyse the molecular excitation using population diagrams and find rotational temperatures of $\sim 2500$ K and column densities of $\sim 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ for both W Hya and R Dor. For W Hya, we observe emission from vibrationally excited H2O arising from the same re…
The detection of narrow SiO thermal emission toward young outflows has been proposed to be a signature of the magnetic precursor of C-shocks. Recent modeling of the SiO emission across C-shocks predicts variations in the SiO line intensity and line shape at the precursor and intermediate-velocity regimes in only few years. We present high-angular resolution (3.8"x3.3") images of the thermal SiO J=2-1 emission toward the L1448-mm outflow in two epochs (November 2004-February 2005, March-April 2009). Several SiO condensations have appeared at intermediate velocities (20-50 km/s) toward the red-s…
Stellar evolution models predict that the solar luminosity was lower in the past, typically 20-25 % lower during the Archean (3.8-2.5 Ga). Despite the fainter Sun, there is strong evidence for the presence of liquid water on Earth's surface at that time. This "faint young Sun problem" is a fundamental question in paleoclimatology, with important implications for the habitability of the early Earth, early Mars and exoplanets. Many solutions have been proposed based on the effects of greenhouse gases, atmospheric pressure, clouds, land distribution and Earth's rotation rate. Here we review the f…
At young ages, when radiation from the host star is high, and the planet is hot and inflated after formation, planetary atmospheric mass loss can be extremely strong compared to older planets. In turn, stellar winds are faster and denser for young stars compared to evolved main-sequence stars. Their interaction with escaping planetary atmospheres can substantially affect atmospheric mass loss rates, as well as the observable signatures of escaping atmospheres, with both effects expected to occur differently for young and evolved planets. We perform a comparative study of two systems around sta…

We report on OH maser emission toward G336.644-0.695 (IRAS 16333-4807), which is a H2O maser-emitting Planetary Nebula (PN). We have detected 1612, 1667 and 1720 MHz OH masers at two epochs using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), hereby confirming it as the seventh known case of an OH-maser-emitting PN. This is only the second known PN showing 1720 MHz OH masers after K 3-35 and the only evolved stellar object with 1720 MHz OH masers as the strongest transition. This PN is one of a group of very young PNe. The 1612 MHz and 1667 MHz masers are at a similar velocity to the 22 GHz H2O…
In this paper, we develop a model for the radio and X-ray emissions from Type IIb Supernova (SN IIb) 2011dh in the first 100 days after the explosion, and investigate a spectrum of relativistic electrons accelerated at a strong shock wave. The widely-accepted theory of the particle acceleration, so-called diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) or Fermi mechanism, requires seed electrons with modest energy with gamma ~ 1 - 100, and little is known about this pre-acceleration mechanism: We derive the energy distribution of relativistic electrons in this pre-accelerated energy regime. We find that th…
