Convolutional Neural Networks has been implemented in many complex machine learning takes such as image classification, object identification, autonomous vehicle and robotic vision tasks. However, ConvNet architecture efficiency and accuracy depend on a large number of fac- tors. Also, the complex architecture requires a significant amount of data to train and involves with a large number of hyperparameters that increases the computational expenses and difficul- ties. Hence, it is necessary to address the limitations and techniques to overcome the barriers to ensure that the architecture performs well in complex visual tasks. This article is intended to develop an efficient ConvNet architecture for multi-class image categorical classification applica- tion. In the development of the architecture, large pool of grey scale images are taken as input information images and split into training and test datasets. The numerously available technique is implemented to reduce the overfitting and poor generalization of the network. The hyperpa- rameters of determined by Bayesian Optimization with Gaussian Process prior algorithm. ReLu non-linear activation function is implemented after the convolutional layers. Max pooling op- eration is carried out to downsampling the data points in pooling layers. Cross-entropy loss function is used to measure the performance of the architecture where the softmax is used in the classification layer. Mini-batch gradient descent with Adam optimizer algorithm is used for backpropagation. Developed architecture is validated with confusion matrix and classification report.
Motivated by the desire to exploit patterns shared across classes, we present a simple yet effective class-specific memory module for fine-grained feature learning. The memory module stores the prototypical feature representation for each category as a moving average. We hypothesize that the combination of similarities with respect to each category is itself a useful discriminative cue. To detect these similarities, we use attention as a querying mechanism. The attention scores with respect to each class prototype are used as weights to combine prototypes via weighted sum, producing a uniquely…

We introduce a new approach to automatically detect the knee joints using a fully convolutional neural network (FCN). We train convolutional neural networks (CNN) from scratch to automatically quantify the knee OA severity optimizing a weighted ratio of two loss functions: categorical cross-entropy and mean-squared loss. Quantized low-precision neural networks are very popular because they require less computational resources for inference and can provide high performance, which is vital for real-time and embedded recognition systems. However, their advantages are apparent for FPGA and ASIC devices, while general-purpose processor architectures are not always able to perform low-bit integer computations efficiently. The most frequently used low-precision neural network model for mobile central processors is an 8-bit quantized network. However, in a number of cases, it is possible to use fewer bits for weights …
We present Convolutional Mean (CM) - a simple and fast convolutional neural network for illuminant estimation. Our proposed method only requires a small neural network model (1.1K parameters) and a 48 x 32 thumbnail input image. Our unoptimized Python implementation takes 1 ms/image, which is arguably 3-3750x faster than the current leading solutions with similar accuracy. Using two public datasets, we show that our proposed light-weight method offers accuracy comparable to the current leading methods' (which consist of thousands/millions of parameters) across several measures.
Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are known to be an effective means to detect and analyze images. Their power is essentially based on the ability to extract out images common features. There exist, however, images involving unique, irregular features or details. Such is a collection of unusual children drawings reflecting the kids imagination and individuality. These drawings were analyzed by means of a CNN constructed by means of Keras-TensorFlow. The same problem - on a significantly higher level - was solved with newly developed family of networks called IgNet that is described in this p…

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are state-of-the-art in numerous computer vision tasks such as object classification and detection. However, the large amount of parameters they contain leads to a high computational complexity and strongly limits their usability in budget-constrained devices such as embedded devices. In this paper, we propose a combination of a new pruning technique and a quantization scheme that effectively reduce the complexity and memory usage of convolutional layers of CNNs, and replace the complex convolutional operation by a low-cost multiplexer. We perform experimen…

A key problem in automatic analysis and understanding of scientific papers is to extract semantic information from non-textual paper components like figures, diagrams, tables, etc. Much of this work requires a very first preprocessing step: decomposing compound multi-part figures into individual subfigures. Previous work in compound figure separation has been based on manually designed features and separation rules, which often fail for less common figure types and layouts. Moreover, few implementations for compound figure decomposition are publicly available. This paper proposes a data driven…

While CNNs naturally lend themselves to densely sampled data, and sophisticated implementations are available, they lack the ability to efficiently process sparse data. In this work we introduce a suite of tools that exploit sparsity in both the feature maps and the filter weights, and thereby allow for significantly lower memory footprints and computation times than the conventional dense framework when processing data with a high degree of sparsity. Our scheme provides (i) an efficient GPU implementation of a convolution layer based on direct, sparse convolution; (ii) a filter step within th…

Accurately predicting and detecting interstitial lung disease (ILD) patterns given any computed tomography (CT) slice without any pre-processing prerequisites, such as manually delineated regions of interest (ROIs), is a clinically desirable, yet challenging goal. The majority of existing work relies on manually-provided ILD ROIs to extract sampled 2D image patches from CT slices and, from there, performs patch-based ILD categorization. Acquiring manual ROIs is labor intensive and serves as a bottleneck towards fully-automated CT imaging ILD screening over large-scale populations. Furthermore,…

However, training these large networks demands high computational time and energy requirements; hence, their energy-efficient implementation is of great interest. In this work, we reduce the training complexity of CNNs by replacing certain weight kernels of a CNN with Gabor filters. The convolutional layers use the Gabor filters as fixed weight kernels, which extracts intrinsic features, with regular trainable weight kernels. This combination creates a…

When a Convolutional Neural Network is used for on-the-fly evaluation of continuously updating time-sequences, many redundant convolution operations are performed. We propose the method of Deep Shifting, which remembers previously calculated results of convolution operations in order to minimize the number of calculations. The reduction in complexity is at least a constant and in the best case quadratic. We demonstrate that this method does indeed save significant computation time in a practical implementation, especially when the networks receives a large number of time-frames.
