Evaluation of two-photon polarization density matrix of polarization-entangled photon-pairs generated through biexciton resonant hyper-parametric scattering
We have investigated the excitation-power dependence of polarization-entangled photon-pairs generated from a CuCl single crystal using biexciton resonant hyper-parametric scattering. The measured two-photon polarization density matrix which corresponds to the two-photon polarization state changes with increasing the excitation power. The evaluation of the tangle and the linear entropy obtained from the measured density matrix indicates that the two-photon polarization density matrix can be expressed as the mixed state of an ideal state and a totally mixed state, and the mixture ratio of the totally mixed state increases as the excitation density increases. The variations of the density matrix and the mixture ratio with the excitation power originate from the generation of the multiple photon pairs.
A pulsed laser scenario, designed to prepare an appropriately chosen self-assembled quantum dot with 100% population in a biexciton state, is proposed. The ensuing radiative emission would provide a near perfect (99.5%) high rate, on-demand, source of entangled photons.
We perform full time resolved tomographic measurements of the polarization state of pairs of photons emitted during the radiative cascade of the confined biexciton in a semiconductor quantum dot. The biexciton was deterministically initiated using a $π$-area pulse into the biexciton two-photon absorption resonance. Our measurements demonstrate that the polarization states of the emitted photon pair are maximally entangled. We show that the measured degree of entanglement depends solely on the temporal resolution by which the time difference between the emissions of the photon pair is determine…
We develop a theoretical model to study the Intensity-Intensity correlation of polarization entangled photons emitted in a biexciton-exciton cascade. We calculate the degree of correlation and show how polarization correlation are affected by the presence of dephasing and energy level splitting of the excitonic states. Our theoretical calculations are in agreement with the recent observation of polarization dependent Intensity-Intensity correlations from a single semiconductor quantum dot [R. M. Stevenson et. al., Nature 439, 179 (2006)] . Our model can be extended to study polarization entang…
We have constructed a theoretical framework of the biexciton-resonant hyperparametric scattering for the pursuit of high-power and high-quality generation of entangled photon pairs. Our framework is applicable to nano-to-bulk crossover regime where the center-of-mass motion of excitons and biexcitons is confined. Material surroundings and the polarization correlation of generated photons can be considered. We have analyzed the entangled-photon generation from CuCl film, by which ultraviolet entangled-photon pairs are generated, and from dielectric microcavity embedding a CuCl layer. We have re…
The entanglement between photon pairs generated from the biexciton cascade transition in a semi- conductor quantum dot located in the vicinity of a metal nanoparticle is theoretically investigated. In the model scheme, the biexciton-exciton and exciton-ground state transitions are assumed to be coupled to two principal plasmon modes of orthogonal polarizations. For a broad spectral window, because the horizontal and vertical spectra are overlapped, the biexciton and exciton photons are degenerate in energy. This allows us to overcome the natural splitting between the intermediate exciton state…
We study biexcitonic states in two tunnel-coupled semiconductor quantum dots and show that such systems provide the possibility to produce polarization- entangled photons or spin-entangled electrons that are spatially separated at production. We distinguish between the various spin configurations and calculate the low-energy biexciton spectrum using the Heitler-London approximation as a function of magnetic and electric fields. The oscillator strengths for the biexciton recombination involving the sequential emission of two photons are calculated. The entanglement of the photon polarizations r…
A semiconductor based scheme has been proposed for generating entangled photon pairs from the radiative decay of an electrically-pumped biexciton in a quantum dot. Symmetric dots produce polarisation entanglement, but experimentally-realised asymmetric dots produce photons entangled in both polarisation and frequency. In this work, we investigate the possibility of erasing the `which-path' information contained in the frequencies of the photons produced by asymmetric quantum dots to recover polarisation-entangled photons. We consider a biexciton with non-degenerate intermediate excitonic state…

In this work, we present a biexciton state population in (111)B oriented site-controlled InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) by resonant two photon excitation. We show that the excited state recombines emitting highly pure single photon pairs entangled in polarization. The discussed cases herein are compelling due to the specific energetic structure of Pyramidal InGaAs QDs - an antibinding biexciton - a state with a positive binding energy. We demonstrate that resonant two-photon excitation of QDs with antibinding biexcitons can lead to a complex excitation-recombination scenario. We systematically obse…
Radiative cascades emit correlated photon pairs, providing a pathway for the generation of entangled photons. The realization of a radiative cascade with impurity atoms in semiconductors, a leading platform for the generation of quantum light, would therefore provide a new avenue for the development of entangled photon pair sources. Here we demonstrate a radiative cascade from the decay of a biexciton at an impurity-atom complex in a ZnSe quantum well. The emitted photons show clear temporal correlations revealing the time--ordering of the cascade. Our result establishes impurity atoms in ZnSe…
Present proposals for the realisation of entangled photon pair sources using the radiative decay of the biexciton in semiconductor quantum dots are limited by the need to enforce degeneracy of the two intermediate, single exciton states. We show how this requirement is lifted if the biexciton binding energy can be tuned to zero and we demonstrate this unbinding of the biexciton in a single, pre-positioned InAs quantum dot subject to a lateral electric field. Full Configuration-Interaction calculations are presented that reveal how the biexciton is unbound through manipulation of the electron-h…
The quantum state of the emitted light from the cascade recombination of a biexciton in a quantum dot is theoretically investigated including exciton fine structure splitting (FSS) and electron-nuclear spin hyperfine interactions. In an ideal situation, the emitted photons are entangled in polarization making the biexciton recombination process a candidate source of entangled photons necessary for the growing field of quantum communication and computation. The coherence of the exciton states in real quantum dots is affected by a finite FSS and the hyperfine interactions via the effective magne…
We report on the generation of time-bin entangled photon pairs from a semiconductor quantum dot via pulsed resonant biexciton generation. Based on theoretical modeling we optimized the duration of the excitation pulse to minimize the laser-induced dephasing and increase the biexciton-to-background single exciton occupation probability. This results in a high degree of entanglement with a concurrence of up to 0.78(6) and a 0.88(3) overlap with a maximally entangled state. Theoretical simulations also indicate a power dependent nature of the dephasing during the laser excitation that limits the …
We have investigated the polarization entanglement between photon pairs generated from a biexciton in a CuCl single crystal via resonant hyper parametric scattering. The pulses of a high repetition pump are seen to provide improved statistical accuracy and the ability to test Bell's inequality. Our results clearly violate the inequality and thus manifest the quantum entanglement and nonlocality of the photon pairs. We also analyzed the quantum state of our photon pairs using quantum state tomography.
Resonant excitation of the biexciton state in an InAsP quantum dot by a phase-coherent pair of picosecond pulses allows preparing time-bin entangled pairs of photons via the biexciton-exciton cascade. We show that this scheme can be implemented for a dot embedded in an InP nanowire. The underlying physical mechanisms can be represented and quantitatively analyzed by an effective three-level open system master equation. Simulation parameters including decay and intensity dependent dephasing rates are extracted from experimental data, which in turn let us predict the resulting entanglement and o…
Radiative two-photon cascades from biexcitons in semiconductor quantum dots under resonant two-photon excitation are promising candidates for the generation of photon pairs. In this work, we propose a scheme to obtain two-photon emission that allows to operate under very intense driving fields. This approach relies on the Purcell enhancement of two-photon virtual transitions between states of the biexciton dressed by the laser. The richness provided by the biexcitonic level structure allows to reach a variety of regimes, from antibunched and bunched photon pairs with polarization orthogonal to…
The biexciton cascade in a quantum dot can be used to generate entangled-photon pairs rapidly and deterministically (on demand). However, due to a large fine-structure splitting between intermediate exciton energy levels, which-path information encoded in the frequencies of emitted photon pairs leads to a small degree of entanglement. Here we show that this information can be efficiently erased by modulating the exciton and biexciton energy levels, giving rise to new decay paths through additional sidebands. The resulting degree of entanglement is substantial, and can be made maximal through s…
We report on the theoretical investigation of photonic crystal cavities etched on a suspended membrane for the generation of polarization entangled photon pairs using the biexciton cascade in a single quantum dot. The implementation of spontaneous emission enhancement effect increases the entanglement visibility, while the concomitant preferential funneling of the emission in the cavity mode increases the collection of both entangled photons. We demonstrate and quantify that standard cavity designs present a polarization dependent emission diagram, detrimental to entanglement. The optimization…
We show theoretically that entangled photon pairs can be produced on demand through the biexciton decay of a quantum dot strongly coupled to the modes of a photonic crystal. The strong coupling allows to tune the energy of the mixed exciton-photon (polariton) eigenmodes, and to overcome the natural splitting existing between the exciton states coupled with different linear polarizations of light. Polariton states are moreover well protected against dephasing due to their lifetime ten to hundred times shorter than that of a bare exciton. Our analysis shows that the scheme proposed can be achiev…
A biexciton in a semiconductor quantum dot is a source of polarization-entangled photons with high potential for implementation in scalable systems. Several approaches for non-resonant, resonant and quasi-resonant biexciton preparation exist, but all have their own disadvantages, for instance low fidelity, timing jitter, incoherence or sensitivity to experimental parameters. We demonstrate a coherent and robust technique to generate a biexciton in an InGaAs quantum dot with a fidelity close to one. The main concept is the application of rapid adiabatic passage to the ground state-exciton-biexc…
We present a first measurement of photon polarization entanglement from the biexciton to ground state cascade of a single InAsP quantum dot embedded in an InP nanowire. We observe a fidelity of 0.76(2) to a reference maximally entangled state as well as a concurrence of 0.57(6).
We discuss level schemes of small quantum-dot turnstiles and their applicability in the production of entanglement in two-photon emission. Due to the large energy splitting of the single-electron levels, only one single electron level and one single hole level can be made resonant with the levels in the conduction band and valence band. This results in a model with nine distinct levels, which are split by the Coulomb interactions. We show that the optical selection rules are different for flat and tall cylindrically symmetric dots, and how this affects the quality of the entanglement generated…
Generation of polarization-entangled photons from quantum dots via the biexciton-exciton recombination cascade is complicated by the presence of an energy spitting between the intermediate excitonic levels, which severely degrades the quality of the entangled photon source. In this paper we present a novel, conceptually simple and straightforward proposal for restoring the entanglement of said source by applying a cascade of time-dependent operations on the emitted photons. This is in striking contrast with the techniques usually employed, that act on the quantum emitter itself in order to rem…
Correlation between the rectilinear polarisations of the photons emitted from the biexciton decay in a single quantum dot is investigated in a device which allows the charge-state of the dot to be controlled. Optimising emission from the neutral exciton states maximises the operating efficiency of the biexciton decay. This is important for single dot applications such as a triggered source of entangled photons. As the bias on the device is reduced correlation between the two photons is found to fall dramatically as emission from the negatively charged exciton becomes significant. Lifetime meas…
Degeneracy of the bright single exciton spin state is a prerequisite for the production of triggered polarization-entangled photon pairs from the biexciton decay of a quantum dot. Normally, however, the exciton spin states are split due to in-plane asymmetries. Here we demonstrate that the exciton splitting of an individual dot can be tuned through zero by thermal annealing. Repeated annealing blueshifts the exciton emission line of the dot, accompanied by a reduction and inversion in polarization splitting. Annealing is also demonstrated to control the detuning between the exciton and biexcit…
Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have potential applications in quantum information processing due to the fact that they are potential on-demand sources of single and entangled photons. Generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs was demonstrated using the biexciton-exciton radiative cascade. One obvious way to increase the number of quantum correlated photons that the QDs emit is to use higher-order multiexcitons, in particular the triexciton. Towards achieving this goal, we first demonstrate deterministic generation of the QD-confined triexciton in a well-definedcoherent state and then…
We study the effect of the exciton fine-structure splitting on the polarisation-entanglement of photon pairs produced by the biexciton cascade in a single quantum dot. The entanglement is found to persist despite separations between the intermediate energy levels of up to 4 micro-eV. Measurements demonstrate that entanglement of the photon pair is robust to the dephasing of the intermediate exciton state responsible for the first order coherence time of either single photon. We present a theoretical framework taking into account the effects of spin-scattering, background light and dephasing. W…
A high efficiency method for the generation of correlated photon pairs accompanied by a reliable means to characterize the efficiency of that process is needed in the study of correlated photon pairs and entangled states involving more than three photons, which have important potential applications in quantum information and quantum communication. In this study, we report the first characterization of the efficiency of generation of correlated photon pairs emitted from a CuCl single crystal using the biexciton-resonance hyper-parametric scattering (RHPS) method which is the highly efficient me…
Tomographic analysis demonstrates that the polarization state of pairs of photons emitted from a biexciton decay cascade becomes entangled when spectral filtering is applied. The measured density matrix of the photon pair satisfies the Peres criterion for entanglement by more than 3 standard deviations of the experimental uncertainty and violates Bell's inequality. We show that the spectral filtering erases the ``which path'' information contained in the photons color and that the remanent information in the quantum dot degrees of freedom is negligible.
Entangled photon generation from semiconductor quantum dots via the biexciton-exciton cascade underlies various decoherence mechanisms related to the solid-state nature of the quantum emitters. So far, this has prevented the demonstration of nearly-maximally entangled photons without the aid of inefficient and complex post-selection techniques that are hardly suitable for quantum communication technologies. Here, we tackle this challenge using strain-tunable GaAs quantum dots driven under two-photon resonant excitation and with strictly-degenerate exciton states. We demonstrate experimentally …
A quantum dot strongly coupled to a photonic crystal has been recently proposed as a source of entangled photon pairs [R. Johne et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 240404 (2008)]. The biexction decay via intermediate polariton states can be used to overcome the natural splitting between the exciton states coupled to the horizontally and vertically polarized light modes, so that high degrees of entanglement can be expected. We investigate theoretically the features of realistic dot-cavity systems, including the effect of the different oscillator strength of excitons resonances coupled to the differen…
Polarization correlation in a linear basis, but not entanglement, is observed between the biexciton and single-exciton photons emitted by a single InAs quantum dot in a two-photon cascade. The results are well described quantitatively by a probabilistic model that includes two decay paths for a biexciton through a non-degenerate pair of one-exciton states, with the polarization of the emitted photons depending on the decay path. The results show that spin non-degeneracy due to quantum-dot asymmetry is a significant obstacle to the realization of an entangled-photon generation device.
We present a model to derive the state of the photon pairs generated by the biexciton cascade decay of a self-assembled quantum dot, which agrees well with the experimental result. Furthermore we calculate the concurrence and entanglement sudden death is found in this system with temperature increasing, which prevents quantum dot emits entangled photon pairs at a high temperature. The relationship between the fine structure splitting and the sudden death temperature is provided too.
A study of highly symmetric site-controlled Pyramidal In0.25Ga0.75As quantum dots (QDs) is presented. It is discussed that polarization-entangled photons can be also obtained from Pyramidal QDs of different designs from the one already reported in Juska et al. (Nat. Phot. 7, 527, 2013). Moreover, some of the limitations for a higher density of entangled photon emitters are addressed. Among these issues are (1) a remaining small fine-structure splitting and (2) an effective QD charging under non-resonant excitation conditions, which strongly reduce the number of useful biexciton-exciton recombi…
We theoretically investigate the joint photodetection probabilities of the biexciton-exciton cascade in single semiconductor quantum dots and analytically derive the density matrix and the Bell's inequalities of the entangled state. Our model includes different mechanisms that may spoil or even destroy entanglement such as dephasing, energy splitting of the relay excitonic states and incoherent population exchange between these relay levels. We explicitly relate the fidelity of entanglement to the dynamics of these processes and derive a threshold for violation of Bell's inequalities. Applied …
We report on the the experimental realization of hyper-entangled two photon states, entangled in polarization and momentum. These states are produced by a high brilliance parametric source of entangled photon pairs with peculiar characteristics of flexibility in terms of state generation. The quality of the entanglement in the two degrees of freedom has been tested by multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry.
Long distance quantum communication is one of the prime goals in the field of quantum information science. With information encoded in the quantum state of photons, existing telecommunication fiber networks can be effectively used as a transport medium. To achieve this goal, a source of robust entangled single photon pairs is required. While time-bin entanglement offers the required robustness, currently used parametric down-conversion sources have limited performance due to multi-pair contributions. We report the realization of a source of single time-bin entangled photon pairs utilizing the …
We demonstrate the on-demand emission of polarisation-entangled photon pairs from the biexciton cascade of a single InAs quantum dot embedded in a GaAs/AlAs planar microcavity. Improvements in the sample design blue shifts the wetting layer to reduce the contribution of background light in the measurements. Results presented show that >70% of the detected photon pairs are entangled. The high fidelity of the (|HxxHx>+|VxxVx>)/2^0.5 state that we determine is sufficient to satisfy numerous tests for entanglement. The improved quality of entanglement represents a significant step towards the real…
Multi-dimensional entangled states have been proven to be more powerful in some quantum information process. In this paper, down-converted photons from spontaneous parametric down conversion(SPDC) are used to engineer multi-dimensional entangled states. A kind of multi-degree multi-dimensional Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger(GHZ) state can also be generated. The hyper-entangled photons, which are entangled in energy-time, polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM), is proved to be useful to increase the dimension of systems and investigate higher-dimensional entangled states.
We present a scheme to realize a deterministic solid state source of time-bin entangled photon pairs using cavity-assisted stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in a single quantum dot. The quantum dot is embedded inside a semiconductor cavity, and the interaction of a coherent superposition of two temporally separated input pulses and the cavity mode leads to a two-photon Raman transition, which produces a time-bin entangled photon pair through the biexciton-exciton cascade. We show that the entanglement of the generated state can be measured using triple coincidence detection, and the …
An on-demand source of indistinguishable and entangled photon pairs is a fundamental component for different quantum information applications such as optical quantum computing, quantum repeaters, quantum teleportation and quantum communication. Parametric down-conversion and four-wave mixing sources of entangled photons have shown high degrees of entanglement and indistinguishability but the probabilistic nature of their generation process also creates zero or multiple photon pairs following a Poissonian distribution. This limits their use in complex algorithms where many qubits and gate opera…
Entangled photons can be generated "on demand" in a novel scheme involving unitary time reordering of the photons emitted in a radiative decay cascade. The scheme yields polarization entangled photon pairs, even though prior to reordering the emitted photons carry significant "which path information" and their polarizations are unentangled. This shows that quantum chronology can be manipulated in a way that is lossless and deterministic (unitary). The theory can, in principle, be tested and applied to the biexciton cascade in semiconductor quantum dots.
Entangled photon sources are crucial for quantum optics, quantum sensing and quantum communication. Semiconductor quantum dots generate on-demand entangled photon pairs via the biexciton-exciton cascade. However, the pair of photons are emitted isotropically in all directions, thus limiting the collection efficiency to a fraction of a percent. Moreover, strain and structural asymmetry in quantum dots lift the degeneracy of the intermediate exciton states in the cascade, thus degrading the measured entanglement fidelity. Here, we propose an approach for generating a pair of entangled photons fr…
We demonstrate that non-linear entanglement witnesses can be made particularly useful for entanglement detection in hyper-entangled or multilevel states. We test this idea experimentally on the platform of linear optics using a hyper-entangled state of two photons. Instead of several simultaneous copies of two-photon entangled states, one can directly measure the witness on single copy of a hyper-entangled state. Our results indicate that hyper-entanglement can be used for quick entanglement detection and it provides a practical testbed for experiments with non-linear entanglement witnesses.
A quantum dot can be used as a source of one- and two-photon states and of polarisation entangled photon pairs. The emission of such states is investigated from the point of view of frequency-resolved two-photon correlations. These follow from a spectral filtering of the dot emission, which can be achieved either by using a cavity or by placing a number of interference filters before the detectors. The combination of these various options is used to iteratively refine the emission in a "distillation" process and arrive at highly correlated states with a high purity. So-called "leapfrog process…
A transparent polarisation sensitive phase pattern makes a polarisation dependent transformation of quantum state of photons without absorbing them. Such an invisible pattern can be imaged with quantum entangled photons by making joint quantum measurements on photons. This paper shows a long path experiment to quantum image a transparent polarisation sensitive phase pattern with hyper-entangled photon pairs involving momentum and polarisation degrees of freedom. In the imaging configuration, a single photon interacts with the pattern while the other photon, which has never interacted with the …
Semiconductor quantum dots are promising building blocks for quantum communication applications. Although deterministic, efficient, and coherent emission of entangled photons has been realized, implementing a practical quantum repeater remains outstanding. Here we explore the statistical limits for entanglement swapping with sources of polarization-entangled photons from the commonly used biexciton-exciton cascade. We stress the necessity of tuning the exciton fine structure, and explain why the often observed time evolution of photonic entanglement in quantum dots is not applicable for large …
