We present filamentary structure analysis based on the CARMA Orion Project through which we obtained high resolution (0.01pc) and high dynamic range (2~deg in DEC) images of the Orion A molecular cloud. We show a preliminary emission map of the $^{13}$CO emission with the addition of identified filaments. The data product resulted from 1500~hr of observing time at CARMA interferometer, and the Nobeyama 45~m telescope. We address basic filament properties along with calculated typical kinematical properties. Furthermore, we present a pilot study where we compare the observed [C{\sc II}] and [C{\sc I}] emission to $^{13}$CO emission towards 6 selected filaments in Orion~A.
We identify 225 filaments from an H$_2$ column density map constructed using simultaneous $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O (J=1-0) observations carried out as a part of the MWISP project. We select 46 long filaments with lengths above 1.2 pc to analyze the filament column density profiles. We divide the selected filaments into 397 segments and calculate the column density profiles for each segment. The symmetries of the profiles are investigated. The proportion of intrinsically asymmetrical segments is 65.3$\%$, and that of intrinsically symmetrical ones is 21.4$\%$. The typical full width …
Using a method based on Faraday rotation measurements, Tahani et al. 2018 find the line-of-sight component of magnetic fields in Orion-A and show that their direction changes from the eastern side of this filamentary structure to its western side. Three possible magnetic field morphologies that can explain this reversal across the Orion-A region are toroidal, helical, and bow-shaped morphologies. In this paper we construct simple models to represent these three morphologies and compare them with the available observational data to find the most probable morphology(ies). To compare the observat…
We have studied the structure and kinematics of the dense molecular gas in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC1) region with the N2H+ 3-2 line. The 6'x9' (~0.7x1.1 pc) region surrounding the Orion KL core has been mapped with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and the Submillimeter Telescope (SMT). The combined SMA and SMT image having a resolution of ~5.4" (~2300 au) reveals multiple filaments with a typical width of 0.02-0.03 pc. On the basis of the non-LTE analysis using the N2H+ 3-2 and 1-0 data, the density and temperature of the filaments are estimated to be ~10^7 cm-3 and ~15-20 K, respectively…
New visible and K-band polarization measurements on stars surrounding molecular clouds in Orion A and stars in the BN vicinity are presented. Our results confirm that magnetic fields located inside the Orion A molecular clouds and in their close neighborhood are spatially connected. On and around the BN object, we measured the angular offsets between the K-band polarization data and available submm data. We find high values of the polarization degree, P_{K}, and of the optical depth, τ_{K}, close to an angular offset position of 90^{\circ} whereas lower values of P_{K} and τ_{K} are observed f…
We present an initial overview of the filamentary structure in the Orion A molecular cloud utilizing a high angular and velocity resolution C$^{18}$O(1-0) emission map that was recently produced as part of the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey. The main goal of this study is to build a credible method to study varying widths of filaments which has previously been linked to star formation in molecular clouds. Due to the diverse star forming activities taking place throughout its $\sim$20 pc length, together with its proximity of 388 pc, the Orion A molecular cloud provides an excellent laboratory for such…
We identify 45 protostellar outflows in CO maps of the Orion A giant molecular cloud from the CARMA-NRO Orion survey. Our sample includes 11 newly detected outflows. We measure the mass and energetics of the outflows, including material at low-velocities by correcting for cloud contributions. The total momentum and kinetic energy injection rates of outflows is comparable to the turbulent dissipation rate of the cloud. We also compare the outflow position angles to the orientation of C$^{18}$O filaments. We find that the full sample of outflows is consistent with being randomly oriented with re…
Understanding the initial properties of star-forming material and how they affect the star formation process is key. From an observational point of view, the feedback from young high-mass stars on future star formation properties is still poorly constrained. In the framework of the IRAM 30m ORION-B large program, we obtained observations of the translucent and moderately dense gas, which we used to analyze the kinematics over a field of 5 deg^2 around the filamentary structures. We used the ROHSA algorithm to decompose and de-noise the C18O(1-0) and 13CO(1-0) signals by taking the spatial cohe…
TRAO Survey of Nearby Filamentary Molecular clouds, the Universal Nursery of Stars (TRAO-FUNS). III. Filaments and dense cores in the NGC 2068 and NGC 2071 regions of Orion B
Using the IRAM 30m telescope we have surveyed a $1\times0.8^{\circ}$ part of the Orion molecular cloud in the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO (2-1) lines with a maximal spatial resolution of $\sim$11" and spectral resolution of $\sim$ 0.4 km~s$^{-1}$. The cloud appears filamentary, clumpy and with a complex kinematical structure. We derive an estimated mass of the cloud of 7700 M$_{\text{Sun}}$ (half of which is found in regions with visual extinctions $A_V$ below $\sim$10) and a dynamical age for the nebula of the order of 0.2 Myrs. The energy balance suggests that magnetic fields play an important r…
ALMA Survey of Orion Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (ALMASOP): Discovery of an extremely dense and compact object embedded in the prestellar core G208.68-19.92-N2
Using data from the Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array Continuum Transit Survey (GALFACTS), we report the discovery of two previously unidentified, very compressed, thin, and straight polarized filaments approximately centred at Galactic coordinates, $(l,b)=(182.5^\circ,-4.0^\circ)$, which we call G182.5--4.0. Using data from the Isaac Newton Telescope Galactic Plane Survey (IGAPS), we also find straight, long, and extremely thin H$α$ filaments coincident with the radio emission. These filaments are positioned in projection at the edge of the Orion-Eridanus superbubble and we find evidence ind…
The Gould Belt Legacy Survey will map star-forming regions within 500 pc, using HARP (Heterodyne Array Receiver Programme), SCUBA-2 (Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2) and POL-2 (Polarimeter 2) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). This paper describes HARP observations of the J = 3-2 transitions of 13CO and C18O towards Orion A. The 1500-resolution observations cover 5 pc of the Orion filament, including OMC1 (inc. BN-KL and Orion Bar), OMC 2/3 and OMC 4, and allow a comparative study of the molecular gas properties throughout the star-forming cloud. The filament shows a velo…
Filaments are a key step on the path that leads from molecular clouds to star formation. However, their characteristics are heavily debated, and the exact processes that lead to their formation and fragmentation into dense cores still remain to be fully understood. We aim at characterising the mass, kinematics, and stability against gravitational collapse of a statistically significant sample of filaments in the Orion B molecular cloud, which is renown for its very low star formation efficiency. We characterise the gas column densities and kinematics over a field of 1.9 deg$^2$, using C$^{18}$…
We present results of the classification of cloud structures toward the Orion A Giant Molecular Cloud based on wide-field $^{12}$CO ($J$ = 1--0), $^{13}$CO ($J$ = 1-0), and C$^{18}$O ($J$ = 1-0) observations using the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope. We identified 78 clouds toward Orion A by applying Spectral Clustering for Interstellar Molecular Emission Segmentation (SCIMES) to the data cube of the column density of $^{13}$CO. Well-known subregions such as OMC-1, OMC-2/3, OMC-4, OMC-5, NGC 1977, L1641-N, and the dark lane south filament (DLSF) are naturally identified as distinct structures in…
We present ALMA images of the dust and molecular line emission in the Orion Hot Core at 349 GHz. At 0.2" angular resolution the images reveal multiple clumps in an arc ~ 1" east of Orion Source I, the protostar at the center of the Kleinmann-Low Nebula, and another chain of peaks from IRc7 towards the southwest. The molecular line images show narrow filamentary structures at velocities > 10 km/s away from the heavily resolved ambient cloud velocity ~5 km/s. Many of these filaments trace the SiO outflow from Source I, and lie along the edges of the dust emission. Molecular line emission at exci…
We present a high angular resolution map of 850 um continuum emission of the Orion Molecular Cloud-3 (OMC 3) obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA); the map is a mosaic of 85 pointings covering an approximate area of 6'.5 x 2'.0 (0.88 x 0.27 pc). We detect 12 spatially resolved continuum sources, each with an H_2 mass between 0.3-5.7 Mo and a projected source size between 1400-8200 AU. All the detected sources are on the filamentary main ridge n_H2>10^6 cm^-3), and analysis based on the Jeans theorem suggests that they are most likely gravitationally unstable. Comparison of multi-waveleng…
This paper analyses images from 43 to 340 GHz to trace the structure of the Source I disk in Orion-KL with $\sim$12 AU resolution. The data reveal an almost edge-on disk with an outside diameter $\sim$ 100 AU which is heated from the inside. The high opacity at 220-340 GHz hides the internal structure and presents a surface temperature $\sim$500 K. Images at 43, 86 and 99 GHz reveal structure within the disk. At 43 GHz there is bright compact emission with brightness temperature $\sim$1300 K. Another feature, most prominent at 99 GHz, is a warped ridge of emission. The data can be explained by…
Star formation in molecular clouds is intimately linked to their internal mass distribution. We present an unprecedentedly detailed analysis of the column density structure of a high-mass, filamentary molecular cloud, namely IRDC G11.11-0.12 (G11). We use two novel column density mapping techniques: high-resolution (FWHM=2", or ~0.035 pc) dust extinction mapping in near- and mid-infrared, and dust emission mapping with the Herschel satellite. These two completely independent techniques yield a strikingly good agreement, highlighting their complementarity and robustness. We first analyze the de…
We have extended the work of Papers I and II of this series to determine at higher spatial resolution the properties of the embedded Orion-S Molecular Cloud that lies within the ionized cavity of the Orion Nebula and of the thin ionized layer that lies between the Cloud and the observer. This was done using existing and new [NII](658.3 nm) and [OIII] (500.7 nm) spectra that map the central region of the Orion Nebula (the Huygens Region). However, it remains unclear how the surface brightness of the ionized layer on the Orion-S Molecular Cloud and that of a foreground Nearer Ionized Layer are l…
We present a comparative study of the physical properties and the spatial distribution of column density peaks in two Giant Molecular Clouds (GMC), the Pipe Nebula and Orion A, which exemplify opposite cases of star cluster formation stages. The density peaks were extracted from dust extinction maps constructed from Herschel/SPIRE farinfrared images. We compare the distribution functions for dust temperature, mass, equivalent radius and mean volume density of peaks in both clouds, and made a more fair comparison by isolating the less active Tail region in Orion A and by convolving the Pipe Neb…
We study the structure and kinematics of nine 0.1 pc-scale cores in Orion with the IRAM 30-m telescope and at higher resolution eight of the cores with CARMA, using CS(2-1) as the main tracer. The single-dish moment zero maps of the starless cores show single structures with central column densities ranging from 7 to 42 times 10^23 cm^-2 and LTE masses from 20 solar masses to 154 solar masses. However, at the higher CARMA resolution (5 arcsec), all of the cores except one fragment into 3 - 5 components. The number of fragments is small compared to that found in some turbulent fragmentation mod…
We present the stability analysis of two regions, OMC-3 and OMC-4, in the massive and long molecular cloud complex of Orion A. We obtained $214~μ$m HAWC+/SOFIA polarization data, and we make use of archival data for the column density and C$^{18}$O (1-0) emission line. We find clear depolarization in both observed regions and that the polarization fraction is anti-correlated with the column density and the polarization-angle dispersion function. We find that the filamentary cloud and dense clumps in OMC-3 are magnetically supercritical and strongly subvirial. This region should be in the gravi…

We have constructed two types of analytical models for an isothermal filamentary cloud supported mainly by magnetic tension. The first one describes an isolated cloud while the second considers filamentary clouds spaced periodically. Both the models assume that the filamentary clouds are highly flattened. The former is proved to be the asymptotic limit of the latter in which each filamentary cloud is much thinner than the distance to the neighboring filaments. We show that these models reproduce main features of the 2D equilibrium model of Tomisaka (2014) for filamentary cloud threaded by perp…
Recent dust continuum surveys have shown that filamentary structures are ubiquitous along the Galactic plane. While the study of their global properties has gained momentum recently, we are still far from fully understanding their origin and stability. Theories invoking magnetic field have been formulated to help explain the stability of filaments; however, observations are needed to test their predictions. In this paper, we investigate the structure and radial equilibrium of five filamentary molecular clouds with the aim of determining the role that magnetic field may play. To do this, we use…
We present a detailed study of the Orion B clouds (d~400 pc), imaged with the PACS/SPIRE cameras at 70-500 $μ$m by the Herschel Gould Belt survey (HGBS). We release new high-res. maps of column density and dust temperature. In the filamentary sub-regions NGC2023/2024, NGC2068/2071, and L1622, 1768 starless dense cores were identified, ~28-45% of which are self-gravitating prestellar cores. A total of 76 protostellar dense cores were also found. The typical lifetime of the prestellar cores was found to be $t_{\rm pre}=1.7_{-0.6}^{+0.8}$ Myr. The prestellar core mass function (CMF) peaks at ~0.5…
The interstellar medium contains filamentary structure over a wide range of scales. Understanding the role of this structure, both as a conduit of gas across the scales and a diagnostic tool of local physics, is a major focus of star formation studies. We review recent progress in studying filamentary structure in the ISM, interpreting its properties in terms of physical processes, and exploring formation and evolution scenarios. We include structures from galactic-scale filaments to tenth-of-a-parsec scale filaments, comprising both molecular and atomic structures, from both observational and…
We present a statistical study of the filamentary structure orientation in the CO emission observations obtained in the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) survey in the range $25.8°< l < 49.7°$, $|b| \leq 1.25°$, and $-100 < v_{\rm LSR} < 135$ km/s. We found that most of the filamentary structures in the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO emission do not show a global preferential orientation either parallel or perpendicular to the Galactic plane. However, we found ranges in Galactic longitude and radial velocity where the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO filamentary structures are parallel to the Galactic…
The unprecedented astrometry from Gaia DR2 provides us with an opportunity to study in detail molecular clouds in the solar neighbourhood. Extracting the wealth of information in these data remains a challenge, however. We have further improved our Gaussian Processes-based, three-dimensional dust mapping technique to allow us to study molecular clouds in more detail. These improvements include a significantly better scaling of the computational cost with the number of stars, and taking into account distance uncertainties to individual stars. Using Gaia DR2 astrometry together with 2MASS and WI…
Magnetic fields pervade in the interstellar medium (ISM) and are believed to be important in the process of star formation, yet probing magnetic fields in star formation regions is challenging. We propose a new method to use Faraday rotation measurements in small scale star forming regions to find the direction and magnitude of the component of magnetic field along the line-of-sight. We test the proposed method in four relatively nearby regions of Orion A, Orion B, Perseus, and California. We use rotation measure data from the literature. We adopt a simple approach based on relative measuremen…
The classical picture of a star-forming filament is a near-equilibrium structure, with collapse dependent on its gravitational criticality. Recent observations have complicated this picture, revealing filaments as a mess of apparently interacting subfilaments, with transsonic internal velocity dispersions and mildly supersonic intra-subfilament dispersions. How structures like this form is unresolved. Here we study the velocity structure of filamentary regions in a simulation of a turbulent molecular cloud. We present two main findings: first, the observed complex velocity features in filament…
We present a study of the filamentary structure in the atomic hydrogen (HI) emission at the 21 cm wavelength toward the Galactic plane using the observations in the HI4PI survey. Using the Hessian matrix method across radial velocity channels, we identified the filamentary structures and quantified their orientations using circular statistics. We found that the regions of the Milky Way's disk beyond 10 kpc and up to roughly 18 kpc from the Galactic center display HI filamentary structures predominantly parallel to the Galactic plane. For regions at lower Galactocentric radii, we found that the…
We present a study of the filamentary structure in the emission from the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) at 21 cm across velocity channels in the 40'' and 1.5-km/s resolution position-position-velocity cube resulting from the combination of the single-dish and interferometric observations in The HI/OH/Recombination (THOR) line survey. Using the Hessian matrix method in combination with tools from circular statistics, we find that the majority of the filamentary structures in the HI emission are aligned with the Galactic plane. Part of this trend can be assigned to long filamentary structures that…
We propose a new statistical model that can reproduce the hierarchical nature of the ubiquitous filamentary structures of molecular clouds. This model is based on the multiplicative random cascade, which is designed to replicate the multifractal nature of intermittency in developed turbulence. We present a modified version of the multiplicative process where the spatial fluctuations as a function of scales are produced with the wavelet transforms of a fractional Brownian motion realisation. This simple approach produces naturally a log-normal distribution function and hierarchical coherent str…
We present sensitive high angular resolution submillimeter and millimeter observations of torsionally/vibrationally highly excited lines of the CH$_3$OH, HC$_3$N, SO$_2$, and CH$_3$CN molecules and of the continuum emission at 870 and 1300 $μ$m from the Orion KL region, made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). These observations plus recent SMA CO J=3-2 and J=2-1 imaging of the explosive flow originating in this region, which is related to the non-hierarchical disintegration of a massive young stellar system, suggest that the molecular Orion "Hot Core" is a pre-existing density enhancement hea…
Recent interferometric observations have called into question the traditional view of the Orion-KL region, which displays one of the most well-defined cases of chemical differentiation in a star-forming region. Previous, lower-resolution images of Orion-KL show emission signatures for oxygen-bearing organic molecules toward the Orion Compact Ridge, and emission for nitrogen-bearing organic molecules toward the Orion Hot Core. However, more recent observations at higher spatial resolution indicate that the bulk of the molecular emission is arising from many smaller, compact clumps that are spat…
The Orion-Eridanus superbubble, formed by the nearby Orion high mass star-forming region, contains multiple bright H$α$ filaments on the Eridanus side of the superbubble. We examine the implications of the H$α$ brightnesses and sizes of these filaments, the Eridanus filaments. We find that either the filaments must be highly elongated along the line of sight or they cannot be equilibrium structures illuminated solely by the Orion star-forming region. The Eridanus filaments may, instead, have formed when the Orion-Eridanus superbubble encountered and compressed a pre-existing, ionized gas cloud…
Abridged. Are all filaments bundles of fibers? To address this question, we have investigated the gas organization within the paradigmatic Integral Shape Filament (ISF). We combined two new ALMA Cycle 3 mosaics with previous IRAM 30m observations to produce a high-dynamic range N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) emission map of the ISF tracing its high-density material and velocity structure down to scales of 0.009 pc. From the analysis of the gas kinematics, we identify a total of 55 dense fibers in the central region of the ISF. Independently of their location, these fibers are characterized by transonic inter…
We present high-angular-resolution ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) images of N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ (1--0) that has been combined with those from the Nobeyama telescope toward OMC-2 and OMC-3 filamentary regions. The filaments (with typical widths of $\sim$ 0.1 pc) and dense cores are resolved. The measured 2D velocity gradients of cores are between 1.3 and 16.7 km\,s$^{-1}$\,pc$^{-1}$, corresponding to a specific angular momentum ($J/M$) between 0.0012 and 0.016 pc\,km\,s$^{-1}$. With respect to the core size $R$, the specific angular momentum follows a power law $J/M \propto R^{1.52~\pm~0.14}$…
We present analysis of the gas kinematics of the Integral Shaped Filament (ISF) in Orion~A using four different molecular lines, $^{12}$CO (1-0), $^{13}$CO (1-0), NH$_3$ (1,1), and N$_2$H$^+$ (1-0). We describe our method to visualize the position-velocity (PV) structure using the intensity-weighted line velocity centroid, which enables us to identify structures that were previously muddled or invisible. We observe a north to south velocity gradient in all tracers that terminates in a velocity peak near the center of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), consistent with the previously reported "wave…
Filamentary structures are ubiquitous from large-scale molecular clouds (few parsecs) to small-scale circumstellar envelopes around Class 0 sources (~1000 AU to ~0.1 pc). In particular, recent observations with the Herschel Space Observatory emphasize the importance of large-scale filaments (few parsecs) and star formation. The small-scale flattened envelopes around Class 0 sources are reminiscent of the large-scale filaments. We propose an observationally derived scenario for filamentary star formation that describes the evolution of filaments as part of the process for formation of cores and…
We present the results of smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations investigating the evolution and fragmentation of filaments that are accreting from a turbulent medium. We show that the presence of turbulence, and the resulting inhomogeneities in the accretion flow, play a significant role in the fragmentation process. Filaments which experience a weakly turbulent accretion flow fragment in a two-tier hierarchical fashion, similar to the fragmentation pattern seen in the Orion Integral Shaped Filament. Increasing the energy in the turbulent velocity field results in more sub-structure withi…
A growing body of evidence indicates that the formation of filaments in interstellar clouds is a key component of the star formation process. In this paper, we present new Herschel PACS and SPIRE observations of the B59 and Stem regions in the Pipe Nebula complex, revealing a rich, organized network of filaments. The asymmetric column density profiles observed for several filaments, along with the bow-like edge of B59, indicates that the Pipe Nebula is being compressed from its western side, most likely by the winds from the nearby Sco OB2 association. We suggest that this compressive flow has…
Recent observations of neutral Galactic interstellar medium showed that filamentary structures of HI clouds are aligned with the interstellar magnetic field. Many interesting applications are proposed based on the alignment such as measurement of magnetic field strength through the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and removal of polarized foreground dust emissions for the detection of inflationary polarized emission in the cosmic microwave background radiation. However, the physical origin of the alignment remains to be explained. To understand the alignment mechanism, we examine formation of HI clo…
We present a catalogue of prestellar and starless cores within the Corona Australis molecular cloud using photometric data from the Herschel Space Observatory. At a distance of d~130 pc, Corona Australis is one of the closest star-forming regions. Herschel has taken multi-wavelength data of Corona Australis with both the SPIRE and PACS photometric cameras in a parallel mode with wavelengths in the range 70 μm to 500 μm. A complete sample of starless and prestellar cores and embedded protostars is identified. Other results from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey have shown spatial correlation betwe…
The expansion and collision of two wind-blown superbubbles is investigated numerically. Our models go beyond previous simulations of molecular cloud formation from converging gas flows by exploring this process with realistic flow parameters, sizes and timescales. The superbubbles are blown by time-dependent winds and supernova explosions, calculated from population synthesis models. They expand into a uniform or turbulent diffuse medium. We find that dense, cold gas clumps and filaments form naturally in the compressed collision zone of the two superbubbles. Their shapes resemble the elongate…
We present combined observations of the NH3 (J,K) = (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions towards OMC1 in Orion A obtained by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the 100 m Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). With an angular resolution of 6" (0.01 pc), these observations reveal with unprecedented detail the complex filamentary structure extending north of the active Orion BN/KL region in a field covering 6' x 7'. We find a 0.012 pc wide filament within OMC1, with an aspect ratio of ~37:1, that was missed in previous studies. Its orientation is directly compared to the relative …
We revisit the filamentary structures of galaxies around the Virgo cluster, exploiting a larger dataset based on the HyperLeda database than previous studies. In particular, this includes a large number of low-luminosity galaxies, resulting in better sampled individual structures. We confirm seven known structures in the distance range 4~$h^{-1}$~Mpc~$<$ SGY~$<$ 16~$h^{-1}$ Mpc, now identified as filaments, where SGY is the axis of the supergalactic coordinate system roughly along the line of sight. The Hubble diagram of the filament galaxies suggests they are infalling toward the main-body of…

We have used existing optical emission and absorption lines, [C II] emission lines, and H I absorption lines to create a new model for a Central Column of material near the Trapezium region of the Orion Nebula. This was necessary because recent high spectral resolution spectra of optical emission lines and imaging spectra in the [C II] 158 micron line have shown that there are new velocity systems associated with the foreground Veil and the material lying between Theta 1 Ori C and the Main Ionization Front of the nebula. When a family of models generated with the spectral synthesis code Cloudy…
We present mapping results of two prestellar cores, L1544 and L694-2, embedded in filamentary clouds in C$^{18}$O (3-2), $^{13}$CO (3-2), $^{12}$CO (3-2), HCO$^+$ (4-3), and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (4-3) with the JCMT telescope to examine the role of the filamentary structures in the formation of dense cores in the clouds, with new distance estimates for L1544 ($175_{-3}^{+4}$ pc) and L694-2 ($203_{-7}^{+6}$ pc). From these observations, we found that the non-thermal velocity dispersion of two prestellar cores and their surrounding clouds are smaller than or comparable to the sound speed. This may indi…
A key parameter to the description of all star formation processes is the density structure of the gas. In this letter, we make use of probability distribution functions (PDFs) of Herschel column density maps of Orion B, Aquila, and Polaris, obtained with the Herschel Gould Belt survey (HGBS). We aim to understand which physical processes influence the PDF shape, and with which signatures. The PDFs of Orion B (Aquila) show a lognormal distribution for low column densities until Av 3 (6), and a power-law tail for high column densities, consistent with a rho r^-2 profile for the equivalent spher…
Ionized gas probes the influence of massive stars on their environment. The Cygnus X region (d~1.5 kpc) is one of the most massive star forming complexes in our Galaxy, in which the Cyg OB2 association (age of 3-5 Myr and stellar mass $2 \times 10^{4}$ M$_{\odot}$) has a dominant influence. We observe the Cygnus X region at 148 MHz using the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) and take into account short-spacing information during image deconvolution. Together with data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, we investigate the morphology, distribution, and physical conditions of low-density ionized …
The ubiquitous presence of filamentary structures in the interstellar medium asks for an unbiased characterization of their properties including a stability analysis. We propose a novel technique to measure the spectrum of filaments in any two-dimensional data set. Using anisotropic wavelets we can quantify and distinguish local and global anisotropies and measure the size distribution of filaments. The wavelet analysis does not need any assumptions on the alignment or shape of filaments in the maps, but directly measures their typical spatial dimensions. In a rigorous test program, we calibra…
The Radcliffe Wave is a $\sim3$ kpc long coherent gas structure containing most of the star-forming complexes near the Sun. In this Letter we aim to find a Galactic context for the Radcliffe Wave by looking into a possible relationship between the gas structure and the Orion (Local) Arm. We use catalogs of massive stars and young open clusters based on \textit{Gaia} EDR3 astrometry, in conjunction with kiloparsec-scale 3D dust maps, to investigate the Galactic \textit{XY} spatial distributions of gas and young stars. We find a quasi-parallel offset between the luminous blue stars and the Radcl…
We present images at 6 and 14 GHz of Source I in Orion-KL. At higher frequencies, from 43 to 340 GHz, images of this source are dominated by thermal emission from dust in a 100 AU diameter circumstellar disk, but at 6 and 14 GHz the emission is elongated along the minor axis of the disk, aligned with the SiO bipolar outflow from the central object. Gaussian fits to the 6, 14, 43, and 99 GHz images find a component along the disk minor axis whose flux and length vary with frequency consistent with free-free emission from an ionized outflow. The data favor a broad outflow from a disk wind, rathe…
We have produced for the first time a detailed velocity map of the giant filamentary nebula surrounding NGC 1275, the Perseus cluster's brightest galaxy, and revealed a previously unknown rich velocity structure across the entire nebula. We present new observations of the low-velocity component of this nebula with the optical imaging Fourier transform spectrometer SITELLE at CFHT. With its wide field of view ($\sim$11'$\times$11'), SITELLE is the only integral field unit spectroscopy instrument able to cover the 80 kpc$\times$55 kpc (3.8'$\times$2.6') large nebula in NGC 1275. Our analysis of …
