We present a comparative study of the physical properties and the spatial distribution of column density peaks in two Giant Molecular Clouds (GMC), the Pipe Nebula and Orion A, which exemplify opposite cases of star cluster formation stages. The density peaks were extracted from dust extinction maps constructed from Herschel/SPIRE farinfrared images. We compare the distribution functions for dust temperature, mass, equivalent radius and mean volume density of peaks in both clouds, and made a more fair comparison by isolating the less active Tail region in Orion A and by convolving the Pipe Nebula map to simulate placing it at a distance similar to that of the Orion Complex. The peak mass distributions for Orion A, the Tail, and the convolved Pipe, have similar ranges, sharing a maximum near 5 M$_\odot$, and a similar power law drop above 10 M$_\odot$. Despite the clearly distinct evolutive stage of the clouds, there are very important similarities in the physical and spatial distribution properties of the column density peaks, pointing to a scenario where they form as a result of uniform fragmentation of filamentary structures across the various scales of the cloud, with density being the parameter leading the fragmentation, and with clustering being a direct result of thermal fragmentation at different spatial scales. Our work strongly supports the idea that the formation of clusters in GMC could be the result of the primordial organization of pre-stellar material
We have conducted a large-field simultaneous survey of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $J=1-0$ emission toward the Orion A giant molecular cloud (GMC) with a sky coverage of $\sim$ 4.4 deg$^2$ using the PMO-13.7 m millimeter-wavelength telescope. We use the probability distribution function of the column density (N-PDF) to investigate the distribution of molecular hydrogen in the Orion A GMC. The H$_2$ column density, derived from the $^{13}$CO emission, of the GMC is dominated by log-normal distribution in the range from $\sim$4$\times10^{21}$ to $\sim$1.5$\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ with ex…
We compare the structure of star-forming molecular clouds in different regions of Orion A to determine how the column density probability distribution function (N-PDF) varies with environmental conditions such as the fraction of young protostars. A correlation between the N-PDF slope and Class 0 protostar fraction has been previously observed in a low-mass star-formation region (Perseus) by Sadavoy; here we test if a similar correlation is observed in a high-mass star-forming region. We use Herschel data to derive a column density map of Orion A. We use the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey cata…
We have observed molecular cloud cores in the Orion A giant molecular cloud (GMC) in CCS, HC3N, DNC, and HN13C to study their chemical characteristics. We have detected CCS in the Orion A GMC for the first time. CCS was detected in about a third of the observed cores. The cores detected in CCS are not localized but are widely distributed over the Orion A GMC. The CCS peak intensity of the core tends to be high in the southern region of the Orion A GMC. The HC3N peak intensity of the core also tends to be high in the southern region, while there are HC3N intense cores near Orion KL, which is no…
The relative abundances of singly-deuterated methanol isotopologues, [CH$_{2}$DOH]/[CH$_{3}$OD], in star-forming regions deviate from the statistically expected ratio of 3. In Orion KL, the nearest high-mass star-forming region to Earth, the singly-deuterated methanol ratio is about 1, and the cause for this observation has been explored through theory for nearly three decades. We present high-angular resolution observations of Orion KL using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to map small-scale changes in CH$_{3}$OD column density across the nebula, which provide a new avenue to…
We have performed an unbiased dense core survey toward the Orion A Giant Molecular Cloud in the C$^{18}$O ($J$=1--0) emission line taken with the Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO) 45-m telescope. The effective angular resolution of the map is 26", which corresponds to $\sim$ 0.05 pc at a distance of 414 pc. By using the Herschel-Planck H$_2$ column density map, we calculate the C$^{18}$O fractional abundance and find that it is roughly constant over the column density range of $\lesssim$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-3}$, although a trend of C$^{18}$O depletion is determined toward higher column d…
Using the Expanded Very Large Array, we have mapped the vicinity of the Orion BN/KL Hot Core with sub-arcsecond angular resolution in seven metastable inversion transitions of ammonia: (J,K)=(6,6) to (12,12). This emission comes from levels up to 1500 K above the ground state, enabling identification of source(s) responsible for heating the region. We used this multi-transition dataset to produce images of the rotational/kinetic temperature and the column density of ammonia for ortho and para species separately and on a position-by-position basis. We find rotational temperature and column dens…
Recently Stanchev et al. (2015) proposed a technique to derive density scaling relations in a star-forming region from analysis of the probability distribution function of column density. We address the possible dependence of the outcome on the selection of probe zones, applying the method to Planck dust-opacity data on Orion A. The derived steep scaling relation of mean density with index -1.6 in the molecular cloud (so called `Central filament') points to its self-gravitating nature. The result is reproduced also for large parts of the clouds' vicinity which indicates major role of gravity i…
We present a study of the sulfur-bearing species detected in a line confusion-limited survey towards Orion KL performed with the IRAM 30m telescope in the range 80-281 GHz. The study is part of an analysis of the line survey divided into families of molecules. Our aim is to derive accurate physical conditions and molecular abundances in the different components of Orion KL from observed SO and SO2 lines. First we assumed LTE conditions obtain rotational temperatures. We then used a radiative transfer model, assuming either LVG or LTE excitation to derive column densities of these molecules in …
We have used the Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory to observe the Orion A and Ophiuchus clouds in the $J=$1$-$0 lines of $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, HCN, HCO$^+$, and N$_2$H$^+$ and the $J=$2$-$1 line of CS. The fully sampled maps with uniform noise levels are used to create moment maps. The variations of the line intensity and velocity dispersion with total column density, derived from dust emission maps, are presented and compared to previous work. The CS line traces dust column density over more than one order of magnitude, and the N$_2$H$^+$ line best traces the highest column density regime ($…
A key parameter to the description of all star formation processes is the density structure of the gas. In this letter, we make use of probability distribution functions (PDFs) of Herschel column density maps of Orion B, Aquila, and Polaris, obtained with the Herschel Gould Belt survey (HGBS). We aim to understand which physical processes influence the PDF shape, and with which signatures. The PDFs of Orion B (Aquila) show a lognormal distribution for low column densities until Av 3 (6), and a power-law tail for high column densities, consistent with a rho r^-2 profile for the equivalent spher…
Infrared stellar photometry from 2MASS and spectral line imaging observations of 12CO and 13CO J = 1-0 line emission from the FCRAO 14m telescope are analysed to assess the variation of the CO abundance with physical conditions throughout the Orion A and Orion B molecular clouds. Three distinct Av regimes are identified in which the ratio between the 13CO column density and visual extinction changes corresponding to the photon dominated envelope, the strongly self-shielded interior, and the cold, dense volumes of the clouds. Within the strongly self-shielded interior of the Orion A cloud, the …
We identify 225 filaments from an H$_2$ column density map constructed using simultaneous $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O (J=1-0) observations carried out as a part of the MWISP project. We select 46 long filaments with lengths above 1.2 pc to analyze the filament column density profiles. We divide the selected filaments into 397 segments and calculate the column density profiles for each segment. The symmetries of the profiles are investigated. The proportion of intrinsically asymmetrical segments is 65.3$\%$, and that of intrinsically symmetrical ones is 21.4$\%$. The typical full width …
We measure H$_2$ temperatures and column densities across the Orion BN/KL explosive outflow from a set of thirteen near-IR H$_2$ rovibrational emission lines observed with the TripleSpec spectrograph on Apache Point Observatory's 3.5-meter telescope. We find that most of the region is well-characterized by a single temperature (~2000-2500 K), which may be influenced by the limited range of upper energy levels (6000-20,000 K) probed by our data set. The H$_2$ column density maps indicate that warm H$_2$ comprises 10$^{-5}$ - 10$^{-3}$ of the total H$_2$ column density near the center of the out…
C$_2$H is one of the first radicals to be detected in the interstellar medium. Its higher rotational transitions have recently become available with the Herschel Space Observatory. We aim to constrain the physical parameters of the C$_2$H emitting gas toward the Orion Bar. We analyse the C$_2$H line intensities measured toward the Orion Bar CO$^+$ Peak and Herschel/HIFI maps of C$_2$H, CH, and HCO$^+$, and a NANTEN map of [CI]. We interpret the observed C$_2$H emission using radiative transfer and PDR models. Five rotational transitions of C$_2$H have been detected in the HIFI frequency range …
We present results of the classification of cloud structures toward the Orion A Giant Molecular Cloud based on wide-field $^{12}$CO ($J$ = 1--0), $^{13}$CO ($J$ = 1-0), and C$^{18}$O ($J$ = 1-0) observations using the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope. We identified 78 clouds toward Orion A by applying Spectral Clustering for Interstellar Molecular Emission Segmentation (SCIMES) to the data cube of the column density of $^{13}$CO. Well-known subregions such as OMC-1, OMC-2/3, OMC-4, OMC-5, NGC 1977, L1641-N, and the dark lane south filament (DLSF) are naturally identified as distinct structures in…
Orion A hosts the nearest massive star factory, thus offering a unique opportunity to resolve the processes connected with the formation of both low- and high-mass stars. Here we present the most detailed and sensitive near-infrared (NIR) observations of the entire molecular cloud to date. With the unique combination of high image quality, survey coverage, and sensitivity, our NIR survey of Orion A aims at establishing a solid empirical foundation for further studies of this important cloud. In this first paper we present the observations, data reduction, and source catalog generation. To demo…
We report the first detection of a Galactic source of OH+ line emission: the Orion Bar, a bright nearby photon-dominated region. Line emission is detected over ~1' (0.12 pc), tracing the Bar itself as well as the Southern tip of the Orion Ridge. The line width of ~4 km/s suggests an origin of the OH+ emission close to the PDR surface, at a depth of A_V ~0.3-0.5 into the cloud where most hydrogen is in atomic form. Steady-state collisional and radiative excitation models require unrealistically high OH+ column densities to match the observed line intensity, indicating that the formation of OH+ …
The hydrogen fluoride (HF) molecule is seen in absorption in the interstellar medium (ISM) along many lines of sight. Surprisingly, it is observed in emission toward the Orion Bar, which is an interface between the ionized region around the Orion Trapezium stars and the Orion molecular cloud. We aim to understand the origin of HF emission in the Orion Bar by comparing its spatial distribution with other tracers. We examine three mechanisms to explain the HF emission: thermal excitation, radiative dust pumping, and chemical pumping. We used a Herschel/HIFI strip map of the HF J = 1-0 line, cove…
Molecular hydrogen being unobservable in cold molecular clouds, the column density measurements of molecular gas currently rely either on dust emission observation in the far-IR or on star counting. (Sub-)millimeter observations of numerous trace molecules are effective from ground based telescopes, but the relationships between the emission of one molecular line and the H2 column density (NH2) is non-linear and sensitive to excitation conditions, optical depths, abundance variations due to the underlying physico-chemistry. We aim to use multi-molecule line emission to infer NH2 from radio obs…
The dust cloud around $λ$ Orionis is observed to be circularly symmetric with a large angular extent ($\approx$ 8 degrees). However, whether the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the cloud is shell- or ring-like has not yet been fully resolved. We study the 3D structure using a new approach that combines a 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer model for ultraviolet (UV) scattered light and an inverse Abel transform, which gives a detailed 3D radial density profile from a two-dimensional column density map of a spherically symmetric cloud. By comparing the radiative transfer models for a spherica…
We carried out mapping observations toward three nearby molecular clouds, Orion A, Aquila Rift, and M17, using a new 100 GHz receiver, FOREST, on the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. In the present paper, we describe the details of the data obtained such as intensity calibration, data sensitivity, angular resolution, and velocity resolution. Each target contains at least one high-mass star-forming region. The target molecular lines were $^{12}$CO ($J = 1 - 0$), $^{13}$CO ($J = 1 - 0$), C$^{18}$O ($J = 1 - 0$), N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$), and CCS ($J_N=8_7-7_6$), with which we covered the density range of 10…
We have studied the opacity of dust grains at submillimeter wavelengths by estimating the optical depth from imaging at 160, 250, 350, and 500 um from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey and comparing this to a column density obtained from the 2MASS-derived color excess E(J-Ks). Our main goal was to investigate the spatial variations of the opacity due to "big" grains over a variety of environmental conditions and thereby quantify how emission properties of the dust change with column (and volume) density. The central and southern areas of the Orion A molecular cloud examined here, with NH ranging …
We present a study of cyanoacetylene (HC3N) and cyanodiacetylene (HC5N) in Orion KL, through observations from two line surveys performed with the IRAM 30m telescope and the HIFI instrument on board the Herschel telescope. The frequency ranges covered are 80-280 GHz and 480-1906 GHz. We model the observed lines of HC3N, HC5N, their isotopologues (including DC3N), and vibrational modes, using a non-LTE radiative transfer code. To investigate the chemical origin of HC3N and DC3N in Orion KL, we use a time-dependent chemical model. We detect 40 lines of the ground state of HC3N and 68 lines of it…
We present a detailed study of the Orion B clouds (d~400 pc), imaged with the PACS/SPIRE cameras at 70-500 $μ$m by the Herschel Gould Belt survey (HGBS). We release new high-res. maps of column density and dust temperature. In the filamentary sub-regions NGC2023/2024, NGC2068/2071, and L1622, 1768 starless dense cores were identified, ~28-45% of which are self-gravitating prestellar cores. A total of 76 protostellar dense cores were also found. The typical lifetime of the prestellar cores was found to be $t_{\rm pre}=1.7_{-0.6}^{+0.8}$ Myr. The prestellar core mass function (CMF) peaks at ~0.5…
We present a near-infrared extinction map of a large region (approximately 2200 deg^2) covering the Orion, the Monoceros R2, the Rosette, and the Canis Major molecular clouds. We used robust and optimal methods to map the dust column density in the near-infrared (NICER and NICEST) towards ~19 million stars of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) point source catalog. Over the relevant regions of the field, we reached a 1-sigma error of 0.03 mag in the K-band extinction with a resolution of 3 arcmin. We measured the cloud distances by comparing the observed density of foreground stars with the…
We report the results of a search for molecular oxygen (O2) toward the Orion Bar, a prominent photodissociation region at the southern edge of the HII region created by the luminous Trapezium stars. We observed the spectral region around the frequency of the O2 N_J = 3_3 - 1_2 transition at 487 GHz and the 5_4 - 3_4 transition at 774 GHz using the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared on the Herschel Space Observatory. Neither line was detected, but the 3sigma upper limits established here translate to a total line-of-sight O2 column density < 1.5 10^16 cm^-2 for an emitting region whose …
We aim to determine the physical and chemical properties of dense cores in Orion B9. We observed the NH3(1,1) and (2,2), and the N2H+(3-2) lines towards the submm peak positions. These data are used in conjunction with our LABOCA 870 micron dust continuum data. The gas kinetic temperature in the cores is between ~9.4-13.9 K. The non-thermal velocity dispersion is subsonic in most of the cores. The non-thermal linewidth in protostellar cores appears to increase with increasing bolometric luminosity. The core masses are very likely drawn from the same parent distribution as the core masses in Or…
We study the spatial distribution and chemistry of small hydrocarbons in the Orion Bar PDR. We used the IRAM-30m telescope to carry out a millimetre line survey towards the Orion Bar edge, complemented with ~2'x2' maps of the C2H and c-C3H2 emission. We analyse the excitation of the detected hydrocarbons and constrain the physical conditions of the emitting regions with non-LTE radiative transfer models. We compare the inferred column densities with updated gas-phase photochemical models including 13CCH and C13CH isotopomer fractionation. ~40% of the lines in the survey arise from hydrocarbons…
Based on the 850 $μ$m dust continuum data from SCUBA-2 at James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), we compare overall properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) in the $λ$ Orionis cloud to those of PGCCs in the Orion A and B clouds. The Orion A and B clouds are well known active star-forming regions, while the $λ$ Orionis cloud has a different environment as a consequence of the interaction with a prominent OB association and a giant Hii region. PGCCs in the $λ$ Orionis cloud have higher dust temperatures ($Td=16.13\pm0.15$ K) and lower values of dust emissivity spectral index ($ β=1.65\pm…
As part of the Herschel Guaranteed Time Key Programme CHESS, we present the discovery of a diffuse gas component in the foreground of the intermediate-mass protostar OMC-2 FIR 4, located in the Orion A region. Making use of the full HIFI spectrum of OMC-2 FIR 4 obtained in CHESS, we detected several ground-state lines from OH+, H2O+, HF, and CH+, all of them seen in absorption against the dust continuum emission of the protostar's envelope. The lines peak at a velocity of 9 km/s, which is blue-shifted by 2 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of OMC-2 FIR 4 (V = 11.4 km/s). We derived co…
We use the $\mathit{Gaia}$ DR2 distances of about 700 mid-infrared selected young stellar objects in the benchmark giant molecular cloud Orion A to infer its 3D shape and orientation. We find that Orion A is not the fairly straight filamentary cloud that we see in (2D) projection, but instead a cometary-like cloud oriented toward the Galactic plane, with two distinct components: a denser and enhanced star-forming (bent) Head, and a lower density and star-formation quieter $\sim$75 pc long Tail. The true extent of Orion A is not the projected $\sim$40 pc but $\sim$90 pc, making it by far the la…
We present the JCMT Gould Belt Survey's first look results of the southern extent of the Orion A Molecular Cloud ($δ\leq -5\mathrm{:}31\mathrm{:}27.5$). Employing a two-step structure identification process, we construct individual catalogues for large-scale regions of significant emission labelled as islands and smaller-scale subregions called fragments using the 850 $μ$m continuum maps obtained using SCUBA-2. We calculate object masses, sizes, column densities, and concentrations. We discuss fragmentation in terms of a Jeans instability analysis and highlight interesting structures as candid…
Understanding the initial properties of star-forming material and how they affect the star formation process is key. From an observational point of view, the feedback from young high-mass stars on future star formation properties is still poorly constrained. In the framework of the IRAM 30m ORION-B large program, we obtained observations of the translucent and moderately dense gas, which we used to analyze the kinematics over a field of 5 deg^2 around the filamentary structures. We used the ROHSA algorithm to decompose and de-noise the C18O(1-0) and 13CO(1-0) signals by taking the spatial cohe…
We aim to develop the Orion B Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) as a local template for interpreting extra-galactic molecular line observations. We use the wide-band receiver at the IRAM-30m to spatially and spectrally resolve the Orion B GMC. The observations cover almost 1 square degree at 26" resolution with a bandwidth of 32 GHz from 84 to 116 GHz in only two tunings. Among the mapped spectral lines are the 12CO, 13CO, C18O, C17O, HCN, HNC, 12CN, CCH, HCO+, N2H+ (1-0), and 12CS, 32SO, SiO, c-C3H2, CH3OH (2-1) transitions. We introduce the molecular anatomy of the Orion B GMC, including relations…
Using the IRAM 30m telescope we have surveyed a $1\times0.8^{\circ}$ part of the Orion molecular cloud in the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO (2-1) lines with a maximal spatial resolution of $\sim$11" and spectral resolution of $\sim$ 0.4 km~s$^{-1}$. The cloud appears filamentary, clumpy and with a complex kinematical structure. We derive an estimated mass of the cloud of 7700 M$_{\text{Sun}}$ (half of which is found in regions with visual extinctions $A_V$ below $\sim$10) and a dynamical age for the nebula of the order of 0.2 Myrs. The energy balance suggests that magnetic fields play an important r…
Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs) are interfaces between the mainly ionized and mainly molecular material around young massive stars. Analysis of the physical and chemical structure of such regions traces the impact of far-ultraviolet radiation of young massive stars on their environment. We present results on the physical and chemical structure of the prototypical high UV-illumination edge-on Orion Bar PDR from an unbiased spectral line survey with a wide spectral coverage. A spectral scan from 480-1250 GHz and 1410-1910 GHz at 1.1 MHz resolution was obtained by the HIFI instrument onboard the …
We present a first look at the SCUBA-2 observations of three sub-regions of the Orion B molecular cloud: LDN 1622, NGC 2023/2024, and NGC 2068/2071, from the JCMT Gould Belt Legacy Survey. We identify 29, 564, and 322 dense cores in L1622, NGC 2023/2024, and NGC 2068/2071 respectively, using the SCUBA-2 850 micron map, and present their basic properties, including their peak fluxes, total fluxes, and sizes, and an estimate of the corresponding 450 micron peak fluxes and total fluxes, using the FellWalker source extraction algorithm. Assuming a constant temperature of 20 K, the starless dense c…
In order to study the temperature distribution of the extended gas within the Orion Kleinmann-Low nebula, we have mapped the emission by methyl cyanide (CH3CN) in its J=6_K-5_K, J=12_K-11_K, J=13_K-12_K, and J=14_K-13_K transitions at an average angular resolution of ~10 arcsec (22 arcsec for the 6_K-5_K lines), as part of a new 2D line survey of this region using the IRAM 30m telescope. These fully sampled maps show extended emission from warm gas to the northeast of IRc2 and the distinct kinematic signatures of the hot core and compact ridge source components. We have constructed population …
We present the first 7.5'x11.5' velocity-resolved map of the [CII]158um line toward the Orion molecular cloud-1 (OMC-1) taken with the Herschel/HIFI instrument. In combination with far-infrared (FIR) photometric images and velocity-resolved maps of the H41alpha hydrogen recombination and CO J=2-1 lines, this data set provides an unprecedented view of the intricate small-scale kinematics of the ionized/PDR/molecular gas interfaces and of the radiative feedback from massive stars. The main contribution to the [CII] luminosity (~85%) is from the extended, FUV-illuminated face of the cloud G_0>500…
Due to its proximity to the Earth and its nearly edge-on geometry, the Orion Bar provides an excellent testbed for detailed models of the structure of HII regions and the surrounding photon-dominated regions. In the present study, a self-consistent model of the structure of the Orion Nebula in the vicinity of the Bar is built under the assumption of approximate ionization, thermal, and hydrostatic equilibrium. It is found that a fairly simple geometry is able to describe the surface brightness profiles of the emission lines tracing the ionized HII region with a remarkable accuracy, independent…

The Orion Kleinmann-Low nebula (Orion KL) is notoriously complex and exhibits a range of physical and chemical components. We conducted high angular resolution (sub-arcsecond) observations of $^13$CH$_{3}$OH $ν=0$ ($\sim$0.3$^{\prime\prime}$ and $\sim$0.7$^{\prime\prime}$) and CH$_3$CN $ν_8=1$ ($\sim$0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ and $\sim$0.9$^{\prime\prime}$) line emission with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to investigate Orion KL's structure on small spatial scales (${\le}350$ au). Gas kinematics, excitation temperatures, and column densities were derived from the molecular…
The CH$^+$ ion is a key species in the initial steps of interstellar carbon chemistry. Its formation in diverse environments where it is observed is not well understood, however, because the main production pathway is so endothermic (4280 K) that it is unlikely to proceed at the typical temperatures of molecular clouds. We investigation CH$^+$ formation with the first velocity-resolved spectral mapping of the CH$^+$ $J=1-0, 2-1$ rotational transitions, three sets of CH $Λ$-doubled triplet lines, $^{12}$C$^+$ and $^{13}$C$^+$, and CH$_3$OH 835~GHz E-symmetry Q branch transitions, obtained with …
The new Gaia data release (EDR3) with improved astrometry has opened a new era in studying our Milky Way in fine detail. We use Gaia EDR3 astrometry together with 2MASS and WISE photometry to study two of the most massive molecular clouds in the solar vicinity: Orion A and California. Despite having remarkable similarities in the plane of the sky in terms of shape, size, and extinction, California has an order of magnitude lower star formation efficiency. We use our state-of-the-art dust mapping technique to derive the detailed three-dimensional (3D) structure of the two clouds, taking into ac…
CO isotopologue transitions are routinely observed in molecular clouds to probe the column density of the gas, the elemental ratios of carbon and oxygen, and to trace the kinematics of the environment. We aim at estimating the abundances, excitation temperatures, velocity field and velocity dispersions of the three main CO isotopologues towards a subset of the Orion B molecular cloud. We use the Cramer Rao Bound (CRB) technique to analyze and estimate the precision of the physical parameters in the framework of local-thermodynamic-equilibrium excitation and radiative transfer with an additive …
It has recently been suggested that chemical processing can shape the spatial distributions of complex molecules in the Orion-KL region and lead to the nitrogen-oxygen "chemical differentiation" seen in previous observations of this source. Orion-KL is a very dynamic region, and it is therefore also possible that physical conditions can shape the molecular distributions in this source. Only high spatial resolution observations can provide the information needed to disentangle these effects. Here we present millimeter imaging studies of Orion-KL at various beam sizes using the Combined Array fo…
We have used existing optical emission and absorption lines, [C II] emission lines, and H I absorption lines to create a new model for a Central Column of material near the Trapezium region of the Orion Nebula. This was necessary because recent high spectral resolution spectra of optical emission lines and imaging spectra in the [C II] 158 micron line have shown that there are new velocity systems associated with the foreground Veil and the material lying between Theta 1 Ori C and the Main Ionization Front of the nebula. When a family of models generated with the spectral synthesis code Cloudy…
We report observations of three rotational transitions of molecular oxygen (O2) in emission from the H2 Peak 1 position of vibrationally excited molecular hydrogen in Orion. We observed the 487 GHz, 774 GHz, and 1121 GHz lines using HIFI on the Herschel Space Observatory, having velocities of 11 km s-1 to 12 km s-1 and widths of 3 km s-1. The beam-averaged column density is N(O2) = 6.5\times1016 cm-2, and assuming that the source has an equal beam filling factor for all transitions (beam widths 44, 28, and 19"), the relative line intensities imply a kinetic temperature between 65 K and 120 K. …
We studied the O-bearing molecule HCOOCH3 to characterize the physical conditions of the different molecular source components in Orion-KL. We identify 28 methyl formate emission peaks throughout the 50" field of observations. The two strongest peaks are in the Compact Ridge (MF1) and in the SouthWest of the Hot Core (MF2). Spectral confusion is still prevailing as half of the expected transitions are blended over the region. Assuming that the transitions are thermalized, we derive the temperature at the five main emission peaks. At the MF1 position we find a temperature of 80K in a 1.8"x0.8" …
We have carried out wide-field (0.17 degree^2) and high-angular resolution (21.3 arcsec ~ 0.04 pc) observations in [CI] line toward the Orion-A giant molecular cloud with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10 m telescope in the On-The-Fly (OTF) mode. Overall features of the [CI] emission are similar to those of the CO (1--0) emission in Shimajiri et al. (2011); the total intensity ratio of the [CI] to CO emission ranges from 0.05 to 0.2. The optical depth of the [CI] emission is found to be 0.1 -- 0.75, suggesting optically thin emission. The column density of the [CI] emiss…
We have mapped six molecular cloud cores in the Orion A giant molecular cloud (GMC), whose kinetic temperatures range from 10 to 30 K, in CCS and N2H+ with Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope to study their chemical characteristics. We identified 31 intensity peaks in the CCS and N2H+ emission in these molecular cloud cores. It is found for cores with temperatures lower than ~ 25 K that the column density ratio of N(N2H+)/N(CCS) is low toward starless core regions while it is high toward star-forming core regions, in case that we detected both of the CCS and N2H+ emission. This is very similar to th…
Aims. We derive physical properties such as the optical depths and the column densities of $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O to investigate the relationship between the far ultraviolet (FUV) radiation and the abundance ratios between $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O. Method. We have carried out wide-field (0.4 deg$^2$) observations with an angular resolution of 25.8 arcsec ($\sim$ 0.05 pc) in $^{13}$CO ($J$=1--0) and C$^{18}$O ($J$=1--0) toward the Orion-A giant molecular cloud using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope in the on-the-fly mode.
