Suspensions of actively driven anisotropic objects exhibit distinctively nonequilibrium behaviors, and current theories predict that they are incapable of sustaining orientational order at high activity. By contrast, here we show that nematic suspensions on a substrate can display order at arbitrarily high activity due to a previously unreported, potentially stabilizing active force. The resulting nonequilibrium ordered phase displays robust giant number fluctuations that cannot be suppressed even by an incompressible solvent. Our results apply to virtually all experimental assays used to investigate the active nematic ordering of self-propelled colloids, bacterial suspensions and the cytoskeleton, and have testable implications in interpreting their nonequilibrium behaviors
We present a comprehensive theory of the dynamics and fluctuations of a two-dimensional suspension of polar active particles in an incompressible fluid confined to a substrate. We show that, depending on the sign of a single parameter, a state with polar orientational order is anomalously stable (or anomalously unstable), with a nonzero relaxation (or growth) rate for angular fluctuations at zero wavenumber. This screening of the broken-symmetry mode in the stable state does lead to conventional rather than giant number fluctuations as argued by Bricard et al., Nature ${\bf 503}$, 95 (2013), b…
Hydrodynamical interactions of active micro-particles are pervasive in our planet's fluid environments. Hence, understanding the interactions of these self-propelled particles is essential for science and engineering. In this paper the suspensions of active swimmer-rotor particles have been mathematically modeled by extending a previously developed stochastic kinetic theory to analyze heterogeneous collections of microswimmers and microrotors with multiple spin velocity populations. The paper uses this modeling approach to derive insights on large scale properties such as suspension instabilit…
In this work, we investigate the dynamics of the number density fluctuations of a dilute suspension of active particles in a linear viscoelastic fluid. We propose a model for the frequency-dependent diffusion coefficient of the active particles, which captures the effect of rotational diffusion on the persistence of their self-propelled motion and the viscoelasticity of the medium. Using fluctuating hydrodynamics, the linearized equations for the active suspension are derived, from which we calculate its dynamic structure factor and the corresponding intermediate scattering function. For a Max…
We study collective self-organization of weakly magnetic active suspensions in a uniform external field by analyzing a mesoscopic continuum model that we have recently developed. Our model is based on a Smoluchowski equation for a particle probability density function in an alignment field coupled to a mean-field description of the flow arising from the activity and the alignment torque. Performing linear stability analysis of the Smoluchowski equation and the resulting orientational moment equations combined with non-linear 3D simulations, we provide a comprehensive picture of instability pat…
At the surfaces of autophoretic colloids, slip velocities arise from local chemical gradients that are many-body functions of particle configuration and activity. For rapid chemical diffusion, coupled with slip-induced hydrodynamic interactions, we deduce the chemohydrodynamic forces and torques between colloids. Near a no-slip wall, the forces can be expressed as gradients of a non-equilibrium potential which, by tuning the type of activity, can be varied from repulsive to attractive. When this potential has a barrier, we find arrested phase separation with a mean cluster size set by competin…

We use Langevin dynamics simulations to study dynamical behaviour of a dense planar layer of active semi-flexible filaments. Using the strength of active force and the thermal persistence length as parameters, we map a detailed phase diagram and identify several non-equilibrium phases in this system. In addition to a slowly flowing melt phase, we observe that for sufficiently high activity, collective flow accompanied by signatures of local polar and nematic order appears in the system. This state is also characterised by strong density fluctuations. Furthermore, we identify an activity-driven…

The Enskog kinetic theory of multicomponent granular suspensions employed previously [Gómez González, Khalil, and Garzó, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{101}, 012904 (2020)] is considered further to determine the four transport coefficients associated with the heat flux. These transport coefficients are obtained by solving the Enskog equation by means of the application of the Chapman--Enskog method around the local version of the homogeneous state. Explicit forms of the heat flux transport coefficients are provided in steady-state conditions by considering the so-called second Sonine approximation to th…
Physical properties of colloidal materials can be modified by addition of nanoparticles. Within a model of like-charged mixtures of particles governed by effective electrostatic interactions, we explore the influence of charged nanoparticles on the structure and thermodynamic phase stability of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions. Focusing on salt-free mixtures of particles of high size and charge asymmetry, interacting via repulsive Yukawa effective pair potentials, we perform molecular dynamics simulations and compute radial distribution functions and static structure factors. Analysis o…
Microorganisms living in microfluidic environments often form multi-species swarms, where they can leverage collective motions to achieve enhanced transport and spreading. Nevertheless, there is a general lack of physical understandings of the origins of the multiscale unstable dynamics observed within these systems. Here, we build a computational model to study binary suspensions of rear- and front-actuated microswimmers, or respectively the so-called "pusher" and "puller" particles, that have different populations and swimming speeds. We perform direct particle simulations to reveal that col…

We study a generalized Navier-Stokes model describing the thin-film flows in non-dilute suspensions of ATP-driven microtubules or swimming bacteria that are enclosed by a moving ring-shaped container. Considering Stokes' second problem, which concerns the motion of an oscillating boundary, our numerical analysis predicts that a periodically rotating ring will oscillate at a higher frequency in an active fluid than in a passive fluid, due to an activity-induced reduction of the fluid inertia. In the case of a freely suspended fluid-container system that is isolated from external forces or torqu…
The incessant swimming motion of microbes in dense suspensions can give rise to striking collective motions and coherent structures. However, theoretical investigations of these structures typically utilize either computationally demanding numerical simulations, or simplified continuum models. Here we analytically investigate the collective dynamics of a dense array of steady, spherical squirmers. We first calculate the forces and torques acting on two closely-separated squirmers, through solving the Stokes equations to second-order in the ratio of mean spacing to squirmer radius. This lubrica…
We analyse the stability of virus-carrying particles in air at equilibrium after the dissipation of the initial turbulent process produced by sneezing, coughing, breathing or speaking. Because the viruses are expelled mainly attached to small droplets, with diverse sizes and weights, and the external environmental conditions can also be diverse, the subsequent motion spannes different spatial and temporal scales. For droplet sizes larger than $100\,μm$, computing the time of decay to the ground and the distance travelled with a simple free fall model with empirical data extracted from the lite…
We investigate the impact of nanoparticle roughness on the phase behaviour of suspensions in models of calcium carbonate nanoparticles. We use a Derjaguin approach that incorporates roughness effects and interactions between the nanoparticles modelled with a combination of DLVO forces and hydration forces, derived using experimental data and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, respectively. Roughness effects, such as atomic steps or terraces appearing in mineral surfaces result in very different effective inter-nanoparticle potentials. Using stochastic Langevin Dynamics computer simulati…
