Basic R & D have been carried out with one small straw tube detector prototype with premixed gas of Ar+CO2 in 70:30 and 90:10 ratio. The gain and the energy resolution are measured with Fe55 X-ray source. Effect of temperature and pressure on these parameters are measured. The variation of gain and energy resolution with rate per unit length are also measured. The details of the test set-up, the method of measurement and the test results are presented in this paper.
For the development of charged particle detectors based on straw tubes operating in vacuum, a special measurement technique is required for the evaluation of their mechanical properties. A summary of the known equations that govern straw behavior under internal pressure is provided, and a new experimental method of a strained pressurized straw tube study is presented in this paper. The Poisson's ratio of the straw wall, which defines the stability conditions of a built-in tube, is measured for the NA62 spectrometer straw, and its minimum pre-tension is estimated.
Straw tube detectors are single wire proportional counters that are widely used as a tracking device. We have carried out R$\&$D with a straw tube detector prototype. The motivation of this work is to study the stability of the performance in terms of gain and energy resolution of the straw tube detectors under high rate radiation. Two different methods are incorporated to perform this study. The gain and energy resolution of the detector are studied along with its variation with ambient temperature and pressure. X-ray from a radioactive source is used to irradiate the detector and the same so…

The Mu2e experiment will search for coherent, neutrino-less conversion of muons into electrons in the Coulomb field of an aluminum nucleus with a sensitivity of four orders of magnitude better than previous experiments. The signature of this process is an electron with energy nearly equal to the muon mass. Mu2e relies on a precision (0.1%) measurement of the outgoing electron momentum to separate signal from background. In order to achieve this goal, Mu2e has chosen a very low-mass straw tracker, made of 20,736 5 mm diameter thin-walled (15 $μ$m) Mylar straws, held under tension to avoid the n…
We report on a novel concept of silicon microstrips and straw tubes detector, where integration is accomplished by a straw module with straws not subjected to mechanical tension in a Rohacell lattice and carbon fiber reinforced plastic shell. Results on mechanical and test beam performances are reported on as well.
Detector rate capability is one of the main parameters for designing a new detector for high energy physics due to permanent rise of the beam luminosity of modern accelerators. One of the widely used detectors for particle track reconstruction is a straw detector based on drift tubes. The rate capability of such detectors is limited by the parameters of readout electronics. The traditional method of increasing detector rate capability is increasing their granularity (a number of readout channels) by reducing the straw diameter and/or by dividing the straw anode wire into two parts (for decreas…
The coordinate detectors based on straw tubes provide a high accuracy of the radial coordinate measurement using the drift time and a small amount of matter in the way of the measured particles. However, the measurement of the coordinate along the wire constitutes a problem. This paper proposes a method for measuring the hit coordinate along the wire with an accuracy better than 1 mm in a straw tube detector using the signals from the cathodes of the detector.
The PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment at the Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research is going to study strong interactions at the scale at which quarks are confined to form hadrons. A continuous beam of antiproton, provided by the High Energy Storage Ring (HESR), will impinge on a fixed hydrogen target. The antiproton beam momentum spans from 1.5 GeV {Natural units, c=1} to 15 GeV \cite{physics2009report}, will create optimal conditions for studying many different aspects of hadron physics, including hyperon physics. Precision physics studies require a highly efficient…

The article presents results of studying the operating mode of thin-walled drift tubes (straws) at flushing it with a high-pressure gas mixture, which allowed obtaining extremely high spatial resolution for straw detectors. The results of studying the radiation ageing of straws operating in this mode are also described.
A check of the eccentricity of the aluminised kapton straw tubes used in the BTeV experiment is accomplished using X-ray tomography of the section of tubes modules. 2 and 3-dimensional images of the single tubes and of the modules are reconstructed and analysed. Preliminary results show that a precision better than 40 $μ$m can be reached on the measurement of the straw radii.
A novel FPGA based online tracking algorithm for helix track reconstruction in a solenoidal field, developed for the PANDA spectrometer, is described. Employing the Straw Tube Tracker detector with 4636 straw tubes, the algorithm includes a complex track finder, and a track fitter. Implemented in VHDL, the algorithm is tested on a Xilinx Virtex-4 FX60 FPGA chip with different types of events, at different event rates. A processing time of 7 $μ$s per event for an average of 6 charged tracks is obtained. The momentum resolution is about 3\% (4\%) for $p_t$ ($p_z$) at 1 GeV/c. Comparing to the al…
The PANDA experiment will be built at the FAIR facility at Darmstadt (Germany) to perform accurate tests of the strong interaction through bar pp and bar pA annihilation's studies. To track charged particles, two systems consisting of a set of planar, closed-packed, self-supporting straw tube layers are under construction. The PANDA straw tubes will have also unique characteristics in term of material budget and performance. They consist of very thin mylar-aluminized cathodes which are made self-supporting by means of the operation gas-mixture over-pressure. This solution allows to reduce at m…
The considering different technics of measuring the longitudinal coordinates by the drift tubes. It is shown that the determination of the longitudinal coordinate by the direct time method provides the best longitudinal resolution. The realization of this method enables the development of coordinate detectors based on the straw with two-dimensional readout, which can be fast enough and not very complex.
The upcoming PANDA experiment at FAIR will be among a new generation of particle physics experiments to employ a novel event filtering system realised purely in software, i.e. a software trigger. To educate its triggering decisions, online reconstruction algorithms need to offer outstanding performance in terms of efficiency and track quality. We present a method to reconstruct longitudinal track parameters in PANDA's Straw Tube Tracker, which is general enough to be easily added to other track finding algorithms that focus on transversal reconstruction. For the pattern recognition part of thi…
Prototypes of newly developed boron-coated straw (BCS) detectors have been tested in the thermal and cold neutron energy ranges. Their neutron detection performance has been benchmarked against the industry standard (detector tubes filled with 3He gas). The tests show that the BCS straws perform near their theoretical limit regarding the detection efficiency, which is adequate for scientific instruments in the cold neutron energy range. The BCS detectors perform on par with 3He tubes in terms of signal to noise and timing resolution, and superior regarding longitudinal spatial resolution.
The article considers a prototype module with sensitive dimensions of 2 x 0.5 m2 based on 2 m long straw tubes which preserves its geometrical dimensions up to the pressure of 4 bar independently of the ambient temperature and humidity. The suggested technique provides a possibility of constructing relatively low-cost planar modules by using straw tubes as long as needed for constructing large area detectors at colliders or other field experiments by assembling them in a common coordinate detector with a user-specified acceptance. The distinguishing feature of a detector is its good radiation …
We have developed the baseline design for the straw drift tube tracking detectors for high rate environment application. Multiple types of high quality neutron detectors are proposed for the first phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), which will be commissioned in 2018. Considering the shortage of 3He supply, a detector module composed of 49 boron-coated straws (BCS) was developed by Proportional Technologies Inc. (PTI). Each straw has a length of 1000 mm and a diameter of 7.5 mm. Seven straws are tightly packed in a tube, and seven tubes are organized in a row to form a detector module. The charge division method is used for longitudinal positioning. A specific readout system was utilized to outp…
This article presents the results of a study of the longitudinal spatial resolution of 2 m long straw tubes by means of the direct timing method (DTM). The feasibility of achieving a coordinate resolution (r.m.s.) better than 2 cm over full length of the straw is demonstrated. The spatial resolution insignificantly changes when measured by detecting gammas from a Fe-55 gamma ray source or minimum ionizing particles from a Ru-106 source. The use of the same type of FEE for data taking both for measuring the drift time of ionization electrons and propagation of a signal along the anode wire allo…
The Mu2e experiment aims to test Charge Lepton Flavour Violation to an unprecedented level, enhancing the current sensitivity by four orders of magnitude for the neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons. A series of graded solenoids convey an intense, pulsed muon beam to an aluminum target. The main detector components are a low mass straw drift tubes tracker, a pure Cesium Iodide calorimeter and an extruded plastic scintillator cosmic ray veto. Requirements, tests on prototypes and status of the production will be discussed.
The aim of this paper is to fully characterize the new multi-anode photomultiplier tube R11265-103-M64, produced by Hamamatsu. Its high effective active area (77%), its pixel size, the low dark signal rate and the capability to detect single photon signals make this tube suitable for an application in high energy physics, such as for RICH detectors. Four tubes and two different bias voltage dividers have been tested. The results of a standard characterization of the gain and the anode uniformity, the dark signal rate, the cross-talk and the device behaviour as a function of temperature have be…

Tracking performance has been measured with 7.6 million cosmic-ray events, collected using a tracking trigger and reconstructed with modular pattern-recognition and fitting software. The intrinsic hit efficiency and tracking trigger ef…
The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) offers an unprecedented intensity for neutrino physics. We discuss a proposal to enhance the LBNF physics programs at Fermilab with the addition of a high-resolution magnetized detector at the near site. The detector is largely based upon reusing an existing superconducting magnet and electromagnetic calorimeter, supplemented with a new low-density straw tube tracker. We also discuss the physics opportunities of the proposed design for the long-baseline oscillation analysis, as well as for precision measurements of (anti)neutrino interactions.
The Central Drift Chamber is a straw-tube wire chamber of cylindrical structure located surrounding the target inside the bore of the GlueX spectrometer solenoid. Its purpose is to detect and track charged particles with momenta as low as 0.25 GeV/c as well as to identify low-momentum protons via energy loss. The construction of the detector is described and its operation and calibration are discussed in detail. The design goal of 150 microns in position resolution has been reached.

We investigated the use of Hamamatsu fine-mesh photomultiplier tube assemblies H6152-70 and H6614-70 with regards to their gain and timing resolution in magnetic fields up to 1.9 T. Our results show that the H6614-70 assembly can operate reliably in magnetic fields exceeding 1.5 T, while preserving a reasonable timing resolution even with a gain reduction of a factor of approximately 100. The reduction of the relative gain of the H6152-70 is similar to the H6614-70's near 1.5 T, but its timing resolution worsens considerably at this high field.

Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used in astroparticle physics experiments to detect light flashes (e.g. fluorescence or Cherenkov light) from extensive air showers (EASs) initiated by statistically rare very high energy cosmic particles when travelling through the atmosphere. Their high amplification factor (gain) allows the detection of very low photon fluxes down to single photons. At the same time this sensitivity causes the gain and signal-to-noise ratio to decrease with collected charge over the lifetime of the PMT (referred to as "ageing"). To avoid fast ageing, many experiments …

These types of PMT are proposed for installation into the future two-phase cryogenic avalanche detector that is developed in the Laboratory of Cosmology and Particle Physics of the Novosibirsk State University jointly with the Budke…
Detection of low-intensity light relies on the conversion of photons to photoelectrons, which are then multiplied and detected as an electrical signal. To measure the actual intensity of the light, one must know the factor by which the photoelectrons have been multiplied. To obtain this amplification factor, we have developed a procedure for estimating precisely the signal caused by a single photoelectron. The method utilizes the fact that the photoelectrons conform to a Poisson distribution. The average signal produced by a single photoelectron can then be estimated from the number of noise e…
To satisfy the requirements of the next generation of dark matter detectors based on the dual phase TPC, Hamamatsu, in close collaboration with UCLA, has developed the R11410-10 photomultipler tube. In this work, we present the detailed tests performed on this device. High QE (>30%) accompanied by a low dark count rate (50 Hz at 0.3 PE) and high gain (10^7) with good single PE resolution have been observed. A comprehensive screening measurement campaign is ongoing while the manufacturer quotes a radioactivity of 20 mBq/PMT. These characteristics show the R11410-10 to be particularly suitable f…

We present results of the detailed study of several hundred Hamamatsu H12700 Multianode Photomultiplier Tubes (MaPMTs), characterizing their response to the Cherenkov light photons in the second Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector, a part of the CLAS12 upgrade at Jefferson Lab. The total number of pixels studied was 25536. The single photoelectron spectra were measured for each pixel at different high voltages and light intensities of the laser test setup. We present a detailed characterisation of the new Hamamatsu R12199-01 HA MOD 3-inch photomultiplier tube (PMT) which is under consideration for the use in segmented optical modules of deep-ice neutrino detectors at the South Pole. Because of the significantly lower operation-temperature range compared to standard applications, a focus of our studies lies on the investigation of the temperature dependence of background characteristics (dark count rate, probability of correlated pulses), timing properties, gain and peak-to-valley ratio of this PMT type. In addition, the performance of the `HA co…
Future large water Cherenkov and scintillator detectors have been proposed for measurements of long baseline neutrino oscillations, proton decay, supernova and solar neutrinos. To ensure cost-effectiveness and optimize scientific reach, one of the critical requirements for such detectors are large-area, high performance photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). One candidate for such a device is the Hamamatsu R11780, a 12" PMT that is available in both standard and high quantum efficiency versions. Measurements of the single photoelectron response characteristics, relative efficiencies of the standard and…
The new hemispherical photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with 9 inch diameter from Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co.,Ltd (HZC) have been studied. Narrow transit time spread (FWHM=2.35 ns) accompanied by small nonlinearity (750 photoelectrons at 5%) and high gain (1E7 ) with good single photoelectron (PE) resolution have been observed. 11 PMTs of this type are deployed and studied in the prototype detector for JUNO at IHEP, China.
Small-diameter Drift Tube (sMDT) detectors with 15 mm tube diameter have proven to be excellent candidates for precision muon tracking detectors in experiments at future hadron colliders like HL-LHC and FCC-hh where unprecedentedly high background rate capabilities are required. sMDT chambers are currently being installed in the inner barrel layer of the ATLAS muon spectrometer. The rate capability of the sMDT drift tubes in terms of muon detection efficiency and spatial resolution is limited by the performance of the readout electronics. A new (s)MDT ASD (Amplifier-Shaper-Discriminator) reado…

The magnetic characteristics of photomultiplier tube R5610A-01 are studied in this paper. The experimental data shows that the gain of R5610A-01 loses about 53% when the magnetic field is 3G along its +X axis. A cylinder of one-layer permalloy strip is able to reduce the effect of 3G magnetic field on the PMT's gain to less than 1%.
