We propose a primal-dual interior-point (PDIP) method for solving quadratic programming problems with linear inequality constraints that typically arise form MPC applications. We show that the solver converges (locally) quadratically to a suboptimal solution of the MPC problem. PDIP solvers rely on two phases: the damped and the pure Newton phases. Compared to state-of-the-art PDIP methods, our solver replaces the initial damped Newton phase (usually used to compute a medium-accuracy solution) with a dual solver based on Nesterov's fast gradient scheme (DFG) that converges with a sublinear convergence rate of order O(1/k^2) to a medium-accuracy solution. The switching strategy to the pure Newton phase, compared to the state of the art, is computed in the dual space to exploit the dual information provided by the DFG in the first phase. Removing the damped Newton phase has the additional advantage that our solver saves the computational effort required by backtracking line search. The effectiveness of the proposed solver is demonstrated on a 2-dimensional discrete-time unstable system and on an aerospace application.
We study infeasible-start primal-dual interior-point methods for convex optimization problems given in a typically natural form we denote as Domain-Driven formulation. Our algorithms extend many advantages of primal-dual interior-point techniques available for conic formulations, such as the current best complexity bounds, and more robust certificates of approximate optimality, unboundedness, and infeasibility, to Domain-Driven formulations. The complexity results are new for the infeasible-start setup used, even in the case of linear programming. In addition to complexity results, our algorit…
In this paper we propose an efficient distributed algorithm for solving loosely coupled convex optimization problems. The algorithm is based on a primal-dual interior-point method in which we use the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to compute the primal-dual directions at each iteration of the method. This enables us to join the exceptional convergence properties of primal-dual interior-point methods with the remarkable parallelizability of ADMM. The resulting algorithm has superior computational properties with respect to ADMM directly applied to our problem. The amount of …
We propose and analyse primal-dual interior-point algorithms for convex optimization problems in conic form. The families of algorithms we analyse are so-called short-step algorithms and they match the current best iteration complexity bounds for primal-dual symmetric interior-point algorithm of Nesterov and Todd, for symmetric cone programming problems with given self-scaled barriers. Our results apply to any self-concordant barrier for any convex cone. We also prove that certain specializations of our algorithms to hyperbolic cone programming problems (which lie strictly between symmetric co…
Based on solving an equivalent parametric equality constrained mini-max problem of the classic logarithmic-barrier subproblem, we present a novel primal-dual interior-point relaxation method for nonlinear programs with general equality and nonnegative constraints. In each iteration, our method approximately solves the KKT system of a parametric equality constrained mini-max subproblem, which avoids the requirement that any primal or dual iterate is an interior-point. The method has some similarities to the warmstarting interior-point methods in relaxing the interior-point requirement and is ea…
Since more than three decades, interior-point methods proved very useful for optimization, from linear over semidefinite to conic (and partly beyond non-convex) programming; despite the fact that already in the semidefinite case (even when strong duality holds) "hard" problems are known. We shade a light on a rather surprising restriction in the non-commutative world (of semidefinite programming), namely "commutative" paths and propose a new family of solvers that is able to use the full richness of "non-commutative" search directions: (primal) feasible-interior-point methods. Beside a detaile…
In this paper, we propose a distributed algorithm for solving loosely coupled problems with chordal sparsity which relies on primal-dual interior-point methods. We achieve this by distributing the computations at each iteration, using message-passing. In comparison to already existing distributed algorithms for solving such problems, this algorithm requires far less number of iterations to converge to a solution with high accuracy. Furthermore, it is possible to compute an upper-bound for the number of required iterations which, unlike already existing methods, only depends on the coupling str…
We study preconditioned proximal point methods for a class of saddle point problems, where the preconditioner decouples the overall proximal point method into an alternating primal--dual method. This is akin to the Chambolle--Pock method or the ADMM. In our work, we replace the squared distance in the dual step by a barrier function on a symmetric cone, while using a standard (Euclidean) proximal step for the primal variable. We show that under non-degeneracy and simple linear constraints, such a hybrid primal--dual algorithm can achieve linear convergence on originally strongly convex problem…
We prove that the classic logarithmic barrier problem is equivalent to a particular logarithmic barrier positive relaxation problem with barrier and scaling parameters. Based on the equivalence, a line-search primal-dual interior-point relaxation method for nonlinear programs is presented. Our method does not require any primal or dual iterates to be interior-points, which is prominently different from the existing interior-point methods in the literature. A new logarithmic barrier penalty function dependent on both primal and dual variables is used to prompt the global convergence of the meth…
In this paper, we define a new, special second order cone as a type-$k$ second order cone. We focus on the case of $k=2$, which can be viewed as SOCO with an additional {\em complicating variable}. For this new problem, we develop the necessary prerequisites, based on previous work for traditional SOCO. We then develop a primal-dual interior point algorithm for solving a type-2 second order conic optimization (SOCO) problem, based on a family of kernel functions suitable for this type-2 SOCO. We finally derive the following iteration bound for our framework: \[\frac{L^γ}{θκγ} \left[2N ψ\left( …
We propose a family of search directions based on primal-dual entropy in the context of interior-point methods for linear optimization. We show that by using entropy based search directions in the predictor step of a predictor-corrector algorithm together with a homogeneous self-dual embedding, we can achieve the current best iteration complexity bound for linear optimization. Then, we focus on some wide neighborhood algorithms and show that in our family of entropy based search directions, we can find the best search direction and step size combination by performing a plane search at each ite…
We analyze sequences generated by interior point methods (IPMs) in convex and nonconvex settings. We prove that moving the primal feasibility at the same rate as the barrier parameter $μ$ ensures the Lagrange multiplier sequence remains bounded, provided the limit point of the primal sequence has a Lagrange multiplier. This result does not require constraint qualifications. We also guarantee the IPM finds a solution satisfying strict complementarity if one exists. On the other hand, if the primal feasibility is reduced too slowly, then the algorithm converges to a point of minimal complementar…
Quasi-Newton methods are well known techniques for large-scale numerical optimization. They use an approximation of the Hessian in optimization problems or the Jacobian in system of nonlinear equations. In the Interior Point context, quasi-Newton algorithms compute low-rank updates of the matrix associated with the Newton systems, instead of computing it from scratch at every iteration. In this work, we show that a simplified quasi-Newton primal-dual interior point algorithm for linear programming enjoys polynomial worst-case iteration complexity. Feasible and infeasible cases of the algorithm…
We consider primal-dual pairs of semidefinite programs and assume that they are ill-posed, i.e., both primal and dual are either weakly feasible or weakly infeasible. Under such circumstances, strong duality may break down and the primal and dual might have a nonzero duality gap. Nevertheless, there are arbitrary small perturbations to the problem data which makes the perturbed primal-dual pair strongly feasible thus zeroing the duality gap. In this paper, we conduct an asymptotic analysis of the optimal value as the perturbation is driven to zero. Specifically, we fix two positive definite ma…
Local convergence of primal-dual interior point methods for nonlinear semidefinite optimization using the Monteiro-Tsuchiya family of search directions
With the help of a logarithmic barrier augmented Lagrangian function, we can obtain closed-form solutions of slack variables of logarithmic-barrier problems of nonlinear programs. As a result, a two-parameter primal-dual nonlinear system is proposed, which corresponds to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker point and the infeasible stationary point of nonlinear programs, respectively, as one of two parameters vanishes. Based on this distinctive system, we present a primal-dual interior-point method capable of rapidly detecting infeasibility of nonlinear programs. The method generates interior-point iterates…

We develop a new inexact interior-point Lagrangian decomposition method to solve a wide range class of constrained composite convex optimization problems. Our method relies on four techniques: Lagrangian dual decomposition, self-concordant barrier smoothing, path-following, and proximal-Newton technique. It also allows one to approximately compute the solution of the primal subproblems (called the slave problems), which leads to inexact oracles (i.e., inexact gradients and Hessians) of the smoothed dual problem (called the master problem). The smoothed dual problem is nonsmooth, we propose to …
We propose an early termination technique for mixed integer conic programming for use within branch-and-bound based solvers. Our approach generalizes previous early termination results for ADMM-based solvers to a broader class of primal-dual algorithms, including both operator splitting methods and interior point methods. The complexity for checking early termination is $O(n)$ for each termination check assuming a bounded problem domain. We show that this domain restriction can be relaxed for problems whose data satisfies a simple rank condition, in which case each check requires an $O(n^2)$ s…
In a recent paper, Skajaa and Ye proposed a homogeneous primal-dual interior-point method for non-symmetric conic optimization. The authors showed that their algorithm converges to $\varepsilon$-accuracy in $O(\sqrtν\log \varepsilon^{-1})$ iterations, where $ν$ is the complexity parameter associated with a barrier function for the primal cone, and thus achieves the best-known iteration complexity for this class of problems. However, an earlier result from the literature was used incorrectly in the proofs of two intermediate lemmas in that paper. In this note, we propose new proofs of these res…
This paper introduces the algorithmic design and implementation of Tulip, an open-source interior-point solver for linear optimization. It implements a regularized homogeneous interior-point algorithm with multiple centrality corrections, and therefore handles unbounded and infeasible problems. The solver is written in Julia, thus allowing for a flexible and efficient implementation: Tulip's algorithmic framework is fully disentangled from linear algebra implementations and from a model's arithmetic. In particular, this allows to seamlessly integrate specialized routines for structured problem…

We present a Newton-Krylov solver for a viscous-plastic sea-ice model. This constitutive relation is commonly used in climate models to describe the material properties of sea ice. Due to the strong nonlinearity introduced by the material law in the momentum equation, the development of fast, robust and scalable solvers is still a substantial challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel primal-dual Newton linearization for the implicitly-in-time discretized momentum equation. Compared to existing methods, it converges faster and more robustly with respect to mesh refinement, and thus enables n…
We apply novel inner-iteration preconditioned Krylov subspace methods to the interior-point algorithm for linear programming (LP). Inner-iteration preconditioners recently proposed by Morikuni and Hayami enable us to overcome the severe ill-conditioning of linear equations solved in the final phase of interior-point iterations. The Krylov subspace methods do not suffer from rank-deficiency and therefore no preprocessing is necessary even if rows of the constraint matrix are not linearly independent. By means of these methods, a new interior-point recurrence is proposed in order to omit one mat…
In this chapter we derive computational complexity certifications of first order inexact dual methods for solving general smooth constrained convex problems which can arise in real-time applications, such as model predictive control. When it is difficult to project on the primal constraint set described by a collection of general convex functions, we use the Lagrangian relaxation to handle the complicated constraints and then, we apply dual (fast) gradient algorithms based on inexact dual gradient information for solving the corresponding dual problem. The iteration complexity analysis is base…

We propose a fast approximate solver for the combinatorial problem known as tracking-by-assignment, which we apply to cell tracking. The latter plays a key role in discovery in many life sciences, especially in cell and developmental biology. So far, in the most general setting this problem was addressed by off-the-shelf solvers like Gurobi, whose run time and memory requirements rapidly grow with the size of the input. In contrast, for our method this growth is nearly linear. Our contribution consists of a new (1) decomposable compact representation of the problem; (2) dual block-coordinate a…
This work proposes an accelerated primal-dual dynamical system for affine constrained convex optimization and presents a class of primal-dual methods with nonergodic convergence rates. In continuous level, exponential decay of a novel Lyapunov function is established and in discrete level, implicit, semi-implicit and explicit numerical discretizations for the continuous model are considered sequentially and lead to new accelerated primal-dual methods for solving linearly constrained optimization problems. Special structures of the subproblems in those schemes are utilized to develop efficient …
Model predictive control (MPC) for linear dynamical systems requires solving an optimal control structured quadratic program (QP) at each sampling instant. This paper proposes a primal active-set strategy (PRESAS) for the efficient solution of such block-sparse QPs, based on a preconditioned iterative solver to compute the search direction in each iteration. Rank-one factorization updates of the preconditioner result in a per-iteration computational complexity of $\mathcal{O}(N m^2)$, where $m$ denotes the number of state and control variables and $N$ the number of control intervals. Three dif…
Solving large scale convex semidefinite programming (SDP) problems has long been a challenging task numerically. Fortunately, several powerful solvers including SDPNAL, SDPNAL+ and QSDPNAL have recently been developed to solve linear and convex quadratic SDP problems to high accuracy successfully. These solvers are based on the augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) applied to the dual problems with the subproblems being solved by semismooth Newton-CG methods. Noticeably, thanks to Rockafellar's general theory on the proximal point algorithms, the primal iteration sequence generated by the ALM enjo…
Recent advances in open source interior-point optimization methods and power system related software have provided researchers and educators with the necessary platform for simulating and optimizing power networks with unprecedented convenience. Within the Matpower software platform a combination of several different interior point optimization methods are provided and four different optimal power flow (OPF) formulations are recently available: the Polar-Power, Polar-Current, Cartesian-Power, and Cartesian-Current. The robustness and reliability of interior-point methods for different OPF form…
In this paper we present the solver DuQuad specialized for solving general convex quadratic problems arising in many engineering applications. When it is difficult to project on the primal feasible set, we use the (augmented) Lagrangian relaxation to handle the complicated constraints and then, we apply dual first order algorithms based on inexact dual gradient information for solving the corresponding dual problem. The iteration complexity analysis is based on two types of approximate primal solutions: the primal last iterate and an average of primal iterates. We provide computational complex…
We develop a new interior-point method (IPM) for symmetric-cone optimization, a common generalization of linear, second-order-cone, and semidefinite programming. In contrast to classical IPMs, we update iterates with a geodesic of the cone instead of the kernel of the linear constraints. This approach yields a primal-dual-symmetric, scale-invariant, and line-search-free algorithm that uses just half the variables of a standard primal-dual IPM. With elementary arguments, we establish polynomial-time convergence matching the standard square-root-n bound. Finally, we prove global convergence of a…
A new relaxed variant of interior point method for low-rank semidefinite programming problems is proposed in this paper. The method is a step outside of the usual interior point framework. In anticipation to converging to a low-rank primal solution, a special nearly low-rank form of all primal iterates is imposed. To accommodate such a (restrictive) structure, the first order optimality conditions have to be relaxed and are therefore approximated by solving an auxiliary least-squares problem. The relaxed interior point framework opens numerous possibilities how primal and dual approximated New…
In this paper we are concerned with the solution of Compressed Sensing (CS) problems where the signals to be recovered are sparse in coherent and redundant dictionaries. We extend a primal-dual Newton Conjugate Gradients (pdNCG) method for CS problems. We provide an inexpensive and provably effective preconditioning technique for linear systems using pdNCG. Numerical results are presented on CS problems which demonstrate the performance of pdNCG with the proposed preconditioner compared to state-of-the-art existing solvers.
