So far, fingerprinting studies have focused on identifying features from single-modality MRI data, which capture individual characteristics in terms of brain structure, function, or white matter microstructure. However, due to the lack of a framework for comparing across multiple modalities, studies based on multi-modal data remain elusive. This paper presents a multi-modal analysis of genetically-related subjects to compare and contrast the information provided by various MRI modalities. The proposed framework represents MRI scans as bags of SIFT features, and uses these features in a nearest-neighbor graph to measure subject similarity. Experiments using the T1/T2-weighted MRI and diffusion MRI data of 861 Human Connectome Project subjects demonstrate strong links between the proposed similarity measure and genetic proximity.

This work details a highly efficient implementation of the 3D scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) algorithm, for the purpose of machine learning from large sets of volumetric medical image data. The primary operations of the 3D SIFT code are implemented on a graphics processing unit (GPU), including convolution, sub-sampling, and 4D peak detection from scale-space pyramids. The performance improvements are quantified in keypoint detection and image-to-image matching experiments, using 3D MRI human brain volumes of different people. Computationally efficient 3D keypoint descriptors are pro…
We introduce a simple modification of local image descriptors, such as SIFT, based on pooling gradient orientations across different domain sizes, in addition to spatial locations. The resulting descriptor, which we call DSP-SIFT, outperforms other methods in wide-baseline matching benchmarks, including those based on convolutional neural networks, despite having the same dimension of SIFT and requiring no training.

We introduce a method to perform automatic thresholding of SIFT descriptors that improves matching performance by at least 15.9% on the Oxford image matching benchmark. The method uses a contrario methodology to determine a unique bin magnitude threshold. This is done by building a generative uniform background model for descriptors and determining when bin magnitudes have reached a sufficient level. The presented method, called meaningful clamping, contrasts from the current SIFT implementation by efficiently computing a clamping threshold that is unique for every descriptor.
Latest results indicate that features learned via convolutional neural networks outperform previous descriptors on classification tasks by a large margin. It has been shown that these networks still work well when they are applied to datasets or recognition tasks different from those they were trained on. However, descriptors like SIFT are not only used in recognition but also for many correspondence problems that rely on descriptor matching. In this paper we compare features from various layers of convolutional neural nets to standard SIFT descriptors. We consider a network that was trained o…
This paper presents a novel approach to exploit the distinctive invariant features in convolutional neural network. The proposed CNN model uses Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) descriptor instead of the max-pooling layer. Max-pooling layer discards the pose, i.e., translational and rotational relationship between the low-level features, and hence unable to capture the spatial hierarchies between low and high level features. The SIFT descriptor layer captures the orientation and the spatial relationship of the features extracted by convolutional layer. The proposed SIFT Descriptor CNN t…
Why has SIFT been so successful? Why its extension, DSP-SIFT, can further improve SIFT? Is there a theory that can explain both? How can such theory benefit real applications? Can it suggest new algorithms with reduced computational complexity or new descriptors with better accuracy for matching? We construct a general theory of local descriptors for visual matching. Our theory relies on concepts in energy minimization and heat diffusion. We show that SIFT and DSP-SIFT approximate the solution the theory suggests. In particular, DSP-SIFT gives a better approximation to the theoretical solution…
Borneo indigenous communities are blessed with rich craft heritage. One such examples is the Iban's plaited mat craft. There have been many efforts by UNESCO and the Sarawak Government to preserve and promote the craft. One such method is by developing a mobile app capable of recognising the different mat motifs. As a first step towards this aim, we presents a novel image dataset consisting of seven mat motif classes. Each class possesses a unique variation of chevrons, diagonal shapes, symmetrical, repetitive, geometric and non geometric patterns. In this study, the performance of the Scale i…
Recently spatial pyramid matching (SPM) with scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) descriptor has been successfully used in image classification. Unfortunately, the codebook generation and feature quantization procedures using SIFT feature have the high complexity both in time and space. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose an approach which combines local binary patterns (LBP) and three-patch local binary patterns (TPLBP) in spatial pyramid domain. The proposed method does not need to learn the codebook and feature quantization processing, hence it becomes very efficient. Exp…
Plant Phenomics based on imaging based techniques can be used to monitor the health and the diseases of plants and crops. The use of 3D data for plant phenomics is a recent phenomenon. However, since 3D point cloud contains more information than plant images, in this paper, we compare the performance of different keypoint detectors and local feature descriptors combinations for the plant growth stage and it's growth condition classification based on 3D point clouds of the plants. We have also implemented a modified form of 3D SIFT descriptor, that is invariant to rotation and is computationall…

In the past decade, SIFT descriptor has been witnessed as one of the most robust local invariant feature descriptors and widely used in various vision tasks. Most traditional image classification systems depend on the luminance-based SIFT descriptors, which only analyze the gray level variations of the images. Misclassification may happen since their color contents are ignored. In this article, we concentrate on improving the performance of existing image classification algorithms by adding color information. To achieve this purpose, different kinds of colored SIFT descriptors are introduced a…
Many practical applications, e.g., content based image retrieval and object recognition, heavily rely on the local features extracted from the query image. As these local features are usually exposed to untrustworthy parties, the privacy leakage problem of image local features has received increasing attention in recent years. In this work, we thoroughly evaluate the privacy leakage of Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT), which is one of the most widely-used image local features. We first consider the case that the adversary can fully access the SIFT features, i.e., both the SIFT descript…

One of the challenges in Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is to reduce the semantic gaps between low-level features and high-level semantic concepts. In CBIR, the images are represented in the feature space and the performance of CBIR depends on the type of selected feature representation. Late fusion also known as visual words integration is applied to enhance the performance of image retrieval. The recent advances in image retrieval diverted the focus of research towards the use of binary descriptors as they are reported computationally efficient. In this paper, we aim to investigate the…
In this paper, we propose a simple way to utilize stereo camera data to improve feature descriptors. Computer vision algorithms that use a stereo camera require some calculations of 3D information. We leverage this pre-calculated information to improve feature descriptor algorithms. We use the 3D feature information to estimate the scale of each feature. This way, each feature descriptor will be more robust to scale change without significant computations. In addition, we use stereo images to construct the descriptor vector. The Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Fast Retina Keypoint…

We introduce a novel loss for learning local feature descriptors which is inspired by the Lowe's matching criterion for SIFT. We show that the proposed loss that maximizes the distance between the closest positive and closest negative patch in the batch is better than complex regularization methods; it works well for both shallow and deep convolution network architectures. Applying the novel loss to the L2Net CNN architecture results in a compact descriptor -- it has the same dimensionality as SIFT (128) that shows state-of-art performance in wide baseline stereo, patch verification and instan…
The scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) algorithm is considered a classical feature extraction algorithm within the field of computer vision. SIFT keypoint descriptor matching is a computationally intensive process due to the amount of data consumed. In this work, we designed a novel fully pipelined hardware accelerator architecture for SIFT keypoint descriptor matching. The accelerator core was implemented and tested on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The proposed hardware architecture is able to properly handle the memory bandwidth necessary for a fully-pipelined implementation …
This study attempts to provide explanations, descriptions and evaluations of some most popular and current combinations of description and descriptor frameworks, namely SIFT, SURF, MSER, and BRISK for keypoint extractors and SIFT, SURF, BRISK, and FREAK for descriptors. Evaluations are made based on the number of matches of keypoints and repeatability in various image variations. It is used as the main parameter to assess how well combinations of algorithms are in matching objects with different variations. There are many papers that describe the comparison of detection and description feature…

Detection and description of keypoints from an image is a well-studied problem in Computer Vision. Some methods like SIFT, SURF or ORB are computationally really efficient. This paper proposes a solution for a particular case study on object recognition of industrial parts based on hierarchical classification. Reducing the number of instances leads to better performance, indeed, that is what the use of the hierarchical classification is looking for. We demonstrate that this method performs better than using just one method like ORB, SIFT or FREAK, despite being fairly slower.

Robust cross-seasonal localization is one of the major challenges in long-term visual navigation of autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we exploit recent advances in semantic segmentation of images, i.e., where each pixel is assigned a label related to the type of object it represents, to attack the problem of long-term visual localization. We show that semantically labeled 3-D point maps of the environment, together with semantically segmented images, can be efficiently used for vehicle localization without the need for detailed feature descriptors (SIFT, SURF, etc.). Thus, instead of dependi…

Image features detection and description is a longstanding topic in computer vision and pattern recognition areas. The Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) is probably the most popular and widely demanded feature descriptor which facilitates a variety of computer vision applications such as image registration, object tracking, image forgery detection, and 3D surface reconstruction. This work introduces a Software as a Service (SaaS) based implementation of the SIFT algorithm which is freely available at http://siftservice.com for any academic, educational and research purposes. This paper investigates how to step up local image descriptor matching by exploiting matching context information. Two main contexts are identified, originated respectively from the descriptor space and from the keypoint space. The former is generally used to design the actual matching strategy while the latter to filter matches according to the local spatial consistency. On this basis, a new matching strategy and a novel local spatial filter, named respectively blob matching and Delaunay Triangulation Matching (DTM) are devised. Blob matching provides a general matching framework by merging t…

Characterizing noisy or ancient documents is a challenging problem up to now. Many techniques have been done in order to effectuate feature extraction and image indexation for such documents. Global approaches are in general less robust and exact than local approaches. That's why, we propose in this paper, a hybrid system based on global approach(fractal dimension), and a local one based on SIFT descriptor. The Scale Invariant Feature Transform seems to do well with our application since it's rotation invariant and relatively robust to changing illumination. In the first step the calculation of…
The ability to visually re-identify objects is a fundamental capability in vision systems. Oftentimes, it relies on collections of visual signatures based on descriptors, such as SIFT or SURF. However, these traditional descriptors were designed for a certain domain of surface appearances and geometries (limited relief). Consequently, highly-textured surfaces such as tree bark pose a challenge to them. In turn, this makes it more difficult to use trees as identifiable landmarks for navigational purposes (robotics) or to track felled lumber along a supply chain (logistics). We thus propose to u…

We also explored the potential of traditional feature descriptors in the hyperspectral images. From our evaluations, we observe that SIFT features outperform the state-of-the-art hyperspectral face recognition methods, and also the other descriptors. This paper proposes to extend local image features in 3D to include invariance to discrete symmetry including inversion of spatial axes and image contrast. A binary feature sign $s \in \{-1,+1\}$ is defined as the sign of the Laplacian operator $\nabla^2$, and used to obtain a descriptor that is invariant to image sign inversion $s \rightarrow -s$ and 3D parity transforms $(x,y,z)\rightarrow(-x,-y,-z)$, i.e. SP-invariant or SP-symmetric. SP-symmetry applies to arbitrary scalar image fields $I: R^3 \rightarrow R^1$ mapping 3D coordinates $(x,y,z) \in R^3$ to scalar intensity $I(x,y,z) \in R^1$,…

However, while much effort has been spent on evaluating their performance in terms of distinctiveness and robustness to image transformations, very little has been done in the contest of tracking. Content-Based Image Retrieval based on local features is computationally expensive because of the complexity of both extraction and matching of local feature. On one hand, the cost for extracting, representing, and comparing local visual descriptors has been dramatically reduced by recently proposed binary local features. On the other hand, aggregation techniques provide a meaningful summarization of all the extracted feature of an image into a single descriptor, allowing us to speed up and scale up the image search. Only a few works have recently mixed together these two research directions, …

Since 2003, image retrieval based on local descriptors (de facto SIFT) has been extensively studied for over a decade due to the advantage of SIFT in dealing with image transformations. Recently, image representations based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) have attracted increasing interest in the community and demonstrated impressive performance. Given this time of rapid evolution, this article provides a comprehensive survey of instance retrieval over the last decade. Two broad categories, SIFT…

Numerous computer vision applications rely on local feature descriptors, such as SIFT, SURF or FREAK, for image matching. Although their local character makes image matching processes more robust to occlusions, it often leads to geometrically inconsistent keypoint matches that need to be filtered out, e.g. using RANSAC. In this paper we propose a novel, more discriminative, descriptor that includes not only local feature representation, but also information about the geometric layout of neighbouring keypoints. To that end, we use a Siamese architecture that learns a low-dimensional feature emb…

A distinctive representation of image patches in form of features is a key component of many computer vision and robotics tasks, such as image matching, image retrieval, and visual localization. State-of-the-art descriptors, from hand-crafted descriptors such as SIFT to learned ones such as HardNet, are usually high dimensional; 128 dimensions or even more. The higher the dimensionality, the larger the memory consumption and computational time for approaches using such descriptors. As autonomous driving and augmented reality evolve, a practical concern is data privacy. In particular, these applications rely on localization based on user images. The widely adopted technology uses local feature descriptors, which are derived from the images and it was long thought that they could not be reverted back. This poses a potential risk to user privacy. We take this a step further and model potential adversaries using a priv…

Then according to the subspace assumption, which implies that the PCA-patch vectors of various affine-warped patches of the same keypoint …

Feature descriptors, such as SIFT and ORB, are well-known for their robustness to illumination changes, which has made them popular for feature-based VSLAM\@. However, in degraded imaging conditions such as low light, low texture, blur and specular reflections, feature extraction is often unreliable. In contrast, direct VSLAM methods which estimate the camera pose by minimizing the photometric error using raw pixel intensities are often more robust to low textured environments and blur. Nonetheless, at the core of direct VSLAM is the reliance on a consistent photometric appearance across image…
