In this paper, we provide an extensive evaluation of the performance of local descriptors for tracking applications. Many different descriptors have been proposed in the literature for a wide range of application in computer vision such as object recognition and 3D reconstruction. More recently, due to fast key-point detectors, local image features can be used in online tracking frameworks. However, while much effort has been spent on evaluating their performance in terms of distinctiveness and robustness to image transformations, very little has been done in the contest of tracking. Our evaluation is performed in terms of distinctiveness, tracking precision and tracking speed. Our results show that binary descriptors like ORB or BRISK have comparable results to SIFT or AKAZE due to a higher number of key-points.

In this paper we propose a novel sparse optical flow (SOF)-based line feature tracking method for the camera pose estimation problem. This method is inspired by the point-based SOF algorithm and developed based on an observation that two adjacent images in time-varying image sequences satisfy brightness invariant. Based on this observation, we re-define the goal of line feature tracking: track two endpoints of a line feature instead of the entire line based on gray value matching instead of descriptor matching. To achieve this goal, an efficient two endpoint tracking (TET) method is presented:…

The local feature detector and descriptor are essential in many computer vision tasks, such as SLAM and 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we introduce two separate CNNs, lightweight SobelNet and DesNet, to detect key points and to compute dense local descriptors. The detector and the descriptor work in parallel. Sobel filter provides the edge structure of the input images as the input of CNN. The locations of key points will be obtained after exerting the non-maximum suppression (NMS) process on the output map of the CNN. We design Gaussian loss for the training process of SobelNet to detect c…

Recent works show that local descriptor learning benefits from the use of L2 normalisation, however, an in-depth analysis of this effect lacks in the literature. In this paper, we investigate how L2 normalisation affects the back-propagated descriptor gradients during training. Based on our observations, we propose HyNet, a new local descriptor that leads to state-of-the-art results in matching. HyNet introduces a hybrid similarity measure for triplet margin loss, a regularisation term constraining the descriptor norm, and a new network architecture that performs L2 normalisation of all interm…

In this work, we propose an end-to-end framework to learn local multi-view descriptors for 3D point clouds. To adopt a similar multi-view representation, existing studies use hand-crafted viewpoints for rendering in a preprocessing stage, which is detached from the subsequent descriptor learning stage. In our framework, we integrate the multi-view rendering into neural networks by using a differentiable renderer, which allows the viewpoints to be optimizable parameters for capturing more informative local context of interest points. Local feature extraction remains an active research area due to the advances in fields such as SLAM, 3D reconstructions, or AR applications. The success in these applications relies on the performance of the feature detector and descriptor. While the detector-descriptor interaction of most methods is based on unifying in single network detections and descriptors, we propose a method that treats both extractions independently and focuses on their interaction in the learning process rather than by parameter sharing. We formulate the classical hard-mining triplet loss as a new detector optimisati…
For relocalization in large-scale point clouds, we propose the first approach that unifies global place recognition and local 6DoF pose refinement. To this end, we design a Siamese network that jointly learns 3D local feature detection and description directly from raw 3D points. It integrates FlexConv and Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) to assure that the learned local descriptor captures multi-level geometric information and channel-wise relations. For detecting 3D keypoints we predict the discriminativeness of the local descriptors in an unsupervised manner. We generate the global descriptor by…
Unlike its image based counterpart, point cloud based retrieval for place recognition has remained as an unexplored and unsolved problem. Specifically, our PointNetVLAD is a combination/modification of the existing PointNet and NetVLAD, which allows end-to-end …

This paper deals with the problem of 3D tracking, i.e., to find dense correspondences in a sequence of time-varying 3D shapes. Despite deep learning approaches have achieved promising performance for pairwise dense 3D shapes matching, it is a great challenge to generalize those approaches for the tracking of 3D time-varying geometries. In this paper, we aim at handling the problem of 3D tracking, which provides the tracking of the consecutive frames of 3D shapes. We propose a novel unsupervised 3D shape registration framework named DeepTracking-Net, which uses the deep neural networks (DNNs) a…
An effective 3D descriptor should be invariant to different geometric transformations, such as scale and rotation, robust to occlusions and clutter, and capable of generalising to different application domains. We present a simple yet effective method to learn general and distinctive 3D local descriptors that can be used to register point clouds that are captured in different domains. Point cloud patches are extracted, canonicalised with respect to their local reference frame, and encoded into scale and rotation-invariant compact descriptors by a deep neural network that is invariant to permut…

In contrast, we propose an approach that inverts this process by first describing and then detecting the keypoint locations. % Describe-to-Detect (D2D) leverages successful descriptor models without the need for any additional training. Visual representation is crucial for a visual tracking method's performances. Conventionally, visual representations adopted in visual tracking rely on hand-crafted computer vision descriptors. These descriptors were developed generically without considering tracking-specific information. The deep slow local representations are learned offline on unlabeled data and transferred to the observational mode…
We propose a multiple-kernel local-patch descriptor based on efficient match kernels of patch gradients. It combines two parametrizations of gradient position and direction, each parametrization provides robustness to a different type of patch miss-registration: polar parametrization for noise in the patch dominant orientation detection, Cartesian for imprecise location of the feature point. Even though handcrafted, the proposed method consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on two local patch benchmarks.

We model the changes in the template using a generative process. We introduce a new dynamical model for the template update using a random walk on the Riemannian manifold where the cov…

The local descriptors have been the backbone of most of the computer vision problems. Most of the existing local descriptors are generated over the raw input images. In order to increase the discriminative power of the local descriptors, some researchers converted the raw image into multiple images with the help of some high and low pass frequency filters, then the local descriptors are computed over each filtered image and finally concatenated into a single descriptor. By doing so, these approaches do not utilize the inter frequency relationship which causes the less improvement in the discri…

Image search systems based on local descriptors typically achieve orientation invariance by aligning the patches on their dominant orientations.
