We study the transient dynamics in a two-dimensional system of interacting Dirac fermions subject to a quenched drive with circularly polarized light. In the absence of interactions, the drive opens a gap at the Dirac point in the quasienergy spectrum, inducing nontrivial band topology. Here we investigate the dynamics of this gap opening process in the presence of interactions, as captured by the generalized spectral function and correlators probed by photoemission experiments. Through a mechanism akin to that known for equilibrium systems, interactions renormalize and enhance the induced gap over its value for the non-interacting system. We additionally study the heating that naturally accompanies driving in the interacting system, and discuss the regimes where dynamical gap emergence and enhancement can be probed before heating becomes significant.
Two-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) host gapless helical edge states that are predicted to support a quantized two-terminal conductance. Quantization is protected by time-reversal symmetry, which forbids elastic backscattering. Paradoxically, the current-carrying state itself breaks the time-reversal symmetry that protects it. Here we show that the combination of electron-electron interactions and momentum-dependent spin polarization in helical edge states gives rise to feedback through which an applied current opens a gap in the edge state dispersion, thereby breaking the protection …
We theoretically report the emergence of $Z_4$ parafermion edge modes in a periodically driven spinful superconducting chain with modest fermionic Hubbard interaction. These parafermion edge modes represent $\pm π/(2T)$ quasienergy excitations ($T$ being the driving period), which have no static counterpart and arise from the interplay between interaction effect and periodic driving. At special parameter values, these exotic quasiparticles can be analytically and exactly derived. Strong numerical evidence of their robustness against variations in parameter values and spatial disorder is furthe…
We investigate many-body dynamics in a one-dimensional interacting periodically driven system, based on a partially filled version of Thouless's topologically quantized adiabatic pump. The corresponding single-particle Floquet bands are chiral, with the Floquet spectrum realizing nontrivial cycles around the quasienergy Brillouin zone. For generic filling, with either bosons or fermions, the system is gapless and is expected to rapidly absorb energy from the driving field. We identify parameter regimes where scattering between Floquet bands of opposite chirality is exponentially suppressed, op…
An intriguing regime of universal charge transport at high entropy density has been proposed for periodically driven interacting one-dimensional systems with Bloch bands separated by a large single-particle band gap. For weak interactions, a simple picture based on well-defined Floquet quasiparticles suggests that the system should host a quasisteady state current that depends only on the populations of the system's Floquet-Bloch bands and their associated quasienergy winding numbers. Here we show that such topological transport persists into the strongly interacting regime where the single-pa…
High-frequency approximation for periodically driven quantum systems from a Floquet-space perspective

Obtaining dynamics of an interacting quantum many-body system connected to multiple baths initially at different, finite, temperatures and chemical potentials is a challenging problem. This is due to a combination of the prevalence of strong correlations in the system, the infinite nature of the baths and the long time to reach steady state. In this work we develop a general formalism that allows access to the full non-Markovian dynamics of such open quantum many-body systems up to the non-equilibrium steady state (NESS), provided its uniqueness. Specifically, we show how finite-time evolution…
Few level quantum systems driven by $n_\mathrm{f}$ incommensurate fundamental frequencies exhibit temporal analogues of non-interacting phenomena in $n_\mathrm{f}$ spatial dimensions, a consequence of the generalisation of Floquet theory in frequency space. We organise the fundamental solutions of the frequency lattice model for $n_\mathrm{f}=2$ into a quasi-energy band structure and show that every band is classified by an integer Chern number. In the trivial class, all bands have zero Chern number and the quasi-periodic dynamics is qualitatively similar to Floquet dynamics. The topological c…
We uncover a new family of few-body topological phases in periodically driven fermionic systems in two dimensions. These phases, which we term correlation-induced anomalous Floquet insulators (CIAFIs), are characterized by quantized contributions to the bulk magnetization from multi-particle correlations, and are classified by a family of integer-valued topological invariants. The CIAFI phases do not require many-body localization, but arise in the generic situation of k-particle localization, where the system is localized (due to disorder) for any finite number of particles up to a maximum nu…
A triangular lattice with onsite Coulomb interaction $U$ present only on one sub-lattice, is periodically driven by electromagnetic field with a frequency $Ω\gg (t,~U)$ at half filling. In this high frequency limit, the electromagnetic vector potential, with an amplitude $A$, modifies the bare hopping and generates new next nearest neighbour hopping parameters. For $U=0$, the driving acts like an emergent intrinsic spin-orbit coupling term and stabilises three dispersive bands with the lower and upper bands having non zero Chern numbers. Within a slave rotor mean field theory, we show that whi…
Floquet engineering offers tantalizing opportunities for controlling the dynamics of quantum many body systems and realizing new nonequilibrium phases of matter. However, this approach faces a major challenge: generic interacting Floquet systems absorb energy from the drive, leading to uncontrolled heating which washes away the sought after behavior. How to achieve and control a non-trivial nonequilibrium steady state is therefore of crucial importance. In this work, we study the dynamics of an interacting one-dimensional periodically-driven electronic system coupled to a phonon heat bath. Usi…
Quantum metrology makes use of coherent superpositions to detect weak signals. While in principle the sensitivity can be improved by increasing the density of sensing particles, in practice this improvement is severely hindered by interactions between them. Using a dense ensemble of interacting electronic spins in diamond, we demonstrate a novel approach to quantum metrology. It is based on a new method of robust quantum control, which allows us to simultaneously eliminate the undesired effects associated with spin-spin interactions, disorder and control imperfections, enabling a five-fold enh…
