We review some results on abstract linear and nonlinear population models with age and spatial structure. The results are mainly based on the assumption of maximal $L_p$-regularity of the spatial dispersion term. In particular, this property allows us to characterize completely the generator of the underlying linear semigroup and to give a simple proof of asynchronous exponential growth of the semigroup. Moreover, maximal regularity is also a powerful tool in order to establish the existence of nontrivial positive equilibrium solutions to nonlinear equations by fixed point arguments or bifurcation techniques. We illustrate the results with examples.
We give a short, simple proof of maximal regularity for linear parabolic evolution equations on manifolds with cylindrical ends by making use of pseudodifferential parametrices and the concept of R-boundedness for the resolvent.
Linear reaction-diffusion equations with inhomogeneous boundary and transmission conditions are shown to possess the property of maximal Lp regularity. The new feature is the fact that the transmission interface is allowed to intersect the boundary of the domain transversally.
We prove two maximal regularity results in spaces of continuous and Hölder continuous functions, for a mixed linear Cauchy-Dirichlet problem with a fractional time derivative $\mathbb{D}_t^α$. This derivative is intended in the sense of Caputo and $α$ is taken in $(0, 2)$. In case $α= 1$, we obtain maximal regularity results for mixed parabolic problems already known in mathematica literature.
For $q>2, γ> 1$, we prove that maximal regularity of $L^q$ type holds for periodic solutions to $-Δu + |Du|^γ= f$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, under the (sharp) assumption $q > d \frac{γ-1}γ$.
Here we describe a simple and fundamental approach to the maximal L^p regularity of parabolic equations, which only uses the concept of singular integrals of Volterra type. Knowledge of analytic semigroups, R-boundedness or H^\infty-functional calculus are not required.
The issue of so-called maximal regularity is discussed within a Hilbert space framework for a class of evolutionary equations. Viewing evolutionary equations as a sums of two unbounded operators, showing maximal regularity amounts to establishing that the operator sum considered with its natural domain is already closed. For this we use structural constraints of the coefficients rather than semi-group strategies or sesqui-linear form methods, which would be difficult to come by for our general problem class. Our approach, although limited to the Hilbert space case, complements known strategies…
In this paper we consider maximal regularity for the vector-valued quasi-steady linear elliptic problems. The equations are the elliptic equation in the domain and the evolution equations on its boundary. We prove the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity for these problems and give examples that our results are applicable. The Lopatinskii--Shapiro and the asymptotic Lopatinskii--Shapiro conditions are important to get boundedness of solution operators.
We consider linear inhomogeneous non-autonomous parabolic problems associated to sesquilinear forms, with discontinuous dependence of time. We show that for these problems, the property of maximal parabolic regularity can be extrapolated to time integrability exponents $r\neq 2$. This allows us to prove maximal parabolic $L^r$-regularity for discontinuous non-autonomous second-order divergence form operators in very general geometric settings and to prove existence results for related quasilinear equations.
Maximal $L^p$-$L^q$ regularity is proved for the strong, weak and very weak solutions of the inhomogeneous Stokes problem with Navier-type boundary conditions in a bounded domain $Ω$, not necessarily simply connected. This extends previous results of the authors (2017).
We consider a quasilinear PDE system which models nonlinear vibrations of a thermoelastic plate defined on a bounded domain in R^n. Well-posedness of solutions reconstructing maximal parabolic regularity in nonlinear thermoelastic plates is established. In addition, exponential decay rates for strong solutions are also shown.
We show that elliptic second order operators $A$ of divergence type fulfill maximal parabolic regularity on distribution spaces, even if the underlying domain is highly non-smooth, the coefficients of $A$ are discontinuous and $A$ is complemented with mixed boundary conditions. Applications to quasilinear parabolic equations with non-smooth data are presented.
We investigate a compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes type system with a single velocity field and algebraic closure for the pressure law. The constitutive relation involves densities of both fluids through an implicit function. We are interested in regular solutions in a $L_p-L_q$ maximal regularity setting. We show that such solutions exists locally in time and, under additional smallness assumptions on the initial data, also globally. Our proof rely on appropriate transformation of the original problem, application of Lagrangian coordinates and maximal regularity estimates for associated li…
In this paper we prove higher regularity for 2m-th order parabolic equations with general boundary conditions. This is a kind of maximal L_p-L_q regularity with differentiability, i.e. the main theorem is isomorphism between the solution space and the data space using Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces. The key is compatibility conditions for the initial data. We are able to get a unique smooth solution if the data satisfying compatibility conditions are smooth.
In this paper, we show mathematical justification of the data assimilation of nudging type in $L^p$-$L^q$ maximal regularity settings. We prove that the approximate solution of the primitive equations by data assimilation converges to the true solution with exponential order on the Besov space $B^{2/q}_{q,p}(Ω)$ in the periodic layer domain $Ω= \mathbb{T}^2 \times (-h, 0)$.
In this paper we establish a result regarding the connection between continuous maximal regularity and generation of analytic semigroups on a pair of densely embedded Banach spaces. More precisely, we show that continuous maximal regularity for a closed operator $A: E_1 \rightarrow E_0$ implies that $A$ generates a strongly continuous analytic semigroup on $E_0$ with domain equal $E_1$.
We consider non-autonomous evolutionary problems of the form $u'(t)+A(t)u(t)=f(t)$, $u(0)=u_0,$ on $L^2([0,T];H)$, where $H$ is a Hilbert space. We do not assume that the domain of the operator $A(t)$ is constant in time $t$, but that $A(t)$ is associated with a sesquilinear form $a(t)$. Under sufficient time regularity of the forms $a(t)$ we prove well-posedness with maximal regularity in $L^2([0,T];H)$. Our regularity assumption is significantly weaker than those from previous results inasmuch as we only require a fractional Sobolev regularity with arbitrary small Sobolev index.
In this paper we study the maximal regularity property for non-autonomous evolution equations $\partial_t u(t)+A(t)u(t)=f(t), u(0)=0.$ If the equation is considered on a Hilbert space $H$ and the operators $A(t)$ are defined by sesquilinear forms $ a(t,.,.)$ we prove the maximal regularity under a Holder continuity assumption of $t \to a(t,.,.)$. In the non-Hilbert space situation we focus on Schrodinger type operators $A(t):= -Δ+ m(t, .)$ and prove $L^p-L^q$ estimates for a wide class of time and space dependent potentials $m$.
Time-periodic solutions to the linearized Navier-Stokes system in the $n$-dimensional whole-space are investigated. For time-periodic data in $L^q$-spaces, maximal regularity and corresponding a priori estimates for the associated time-periodic solutions are established. More specifically, a Banach space of time-periodic vector fields is identified with the property that the linearized Navier-Stokes operator maps this space homeomorphically onto the $L^q$-space of time-periodic data.
In this paper we investigate maximal $L^q$-regularity for time-dependent viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations with unbounded right-hand side and superlinear growth in the gradient. Our approach is based on the interplay between new integral and Hölder estimates, interpolation inequalities, and parabolic regularity for linear equations. These estimates are obtained via a duality method à la Evans. This sheds new light on a parabolic counterpart of a conjecture by P.-L. Lions on maximal regularity for Hamilton-Jacobi equations, recently addressed in the stationary framework by the authors. Finally,…
We investigate the $\mathcal R$-boundedness of operator families belonging to the Boutet de Monvel calculus. In particular, we show that weakly and strongly parameter-dependent Green operators of nonpositive order are $\mathcal R$-bounded. Such operators appear as resolvents of non-local (pseudodifferential) boundary value problems. As a consequence, we obtain maximal $L_p$-regularity for such boundary value problems. An example is given by the reduced Stokes equation in waveguides.
We consider the maximal regularity problem for non-autonomous evolution equations \begin{equation} \left\{ \begin{array}{rcl} u'(t) + A(t)\,u(t) &=& f(t), \ t \in (0, τ] u(0)&=&u_0. \end{array} \right. \end{equation} Each operator $A(t)$ is associated with a sesquilinear form $\mathfrak{a}(t)$ on a Hilbert space $H$. We assume that these forms all have the same domain $V$. It is proved in \cite{HO14} that if the forms have some regularity with respect to $t$ (e.g., piecewise $α$-Hölder continuous for some $α> 1/2$) then the above problem has maximal $L_p$--regularity for all $u_0 $ in the real…
We consider the motion of incompressible viscous fluids bounded above by a free surface and below by a solid surface in the $N$-dimensional Euclidean space for $N\geq 2$ when the gravity is not taken into account. The aim of this paper is to show the global solvability of the Naiver-Stokes equations with a free surface, describing the above-mentioned motion, in the maximal $L_p\text{-}L_q$ regularity class. Our approach is based on the maximal $L_p\text{-}L_q$ regularity with exponential stability for the linearized equations, and solutions to the original nonlinear problem are also exponentia…
We consider the porous medium equation on manifolds with conical singularities and show existence, uniqueness and maximal $L^{p}$-regularity of a short time solution. In particular, we obtain information on the short time asymptotics of the solution near the conical point. Our method is based on bounded imaginary powers results for cone differential operators on Mellin-Sobolev spaces and $R$-sectoriality perturbation techniques.
We characterize the domain of the realization of the linear parabolic operator Gu := u_t + L(t)u (where, for each real t, L(t) is an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator), in L^2 spaces with respect to a suitable measure, that is invariant for the associated evolution semigroup. As a byproduct, we obtain optimal L^2 regularity results for evolution equations with time-depending Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators.
We prove resolvent $L_p$ estimates and maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity estimates for the Stokes equations with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions in the half space. Each solution is constructed by a Fourier multiplier of $x'$-direction and an integral of $x_N$-direction. We decompose the solution such that the symbols of the Fourier multipliers are bounded and holomorphic. We see that the operator norms are dominated by a homogeneous function of order $-1$ for $x_N$-direction. The basis are Weis's operator-valued Fourier multiplier theorem and a boundedness of a kernel operator. W…
We study the local Hölder regularity of strong solutions $u$ of second-order uniformly elliptic equations having a gradient term with superquadratic growth $γ> 2$, and right-hand side in a Lebesgue space $L^q$. When $q > N\frac{γ-1}γ$ ($N$ is the dimension of the Euclidean space), we obtain the optimal Hölder continuity exponent $α_q > \frac{γ-2}{γ-1}$. This allows us to prove some new results of maximal regularity type, which consist in estimating the Hessian matrix of $u$ in $L^q$. Our methods are based on blow-up techniques and a Liouville theorem.
In this paper we establish weighted $L^{q}$-$L^{p}$-maximal regularity for linear vector-valued parabolic initial-boundary value problems with inhomogeneous boundary conditions of static type. The weights we consider are power weights in time and in space, and yield flexibility in the optimal regularity of the initial-boundary data and allow to avoid compatibility conditions at the boundary. The novelty of the followed approach is the use of weighted anisotropic mixed-norm Banach space-valued function spaces of Sobolev, Bessel potential, Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov type, whose trace theory is a…
We consider one-dimensional inhomogeneous parabolic equations with higher-order elliptic differential operators subject to periodic boundary conditions. In our main result we show that the property of continuous maximal regularity is satisfied in the setting of periodic little-Hölder spaces, provided the coefficients of the differential operator satisfy minimal regularity assumptions. We address parameter-dependent elliptic equations, deriving invertibility and resolvent bounds which lead to results on generation of analytic semigroups. We also demonstrate that the techniques and results of th…
We consider an elliptic Kolmogorov equation lambda u - Ku =f in a convex subset C of a separable Hilbert space X. We prove maximal Sobolev regularity of its weak solution, when lambda >0 and f is in L^2(C,nu), where nu is the log-concave measure associated to the system. Moreover we prove maximal estimates on the gradient of u, that allow to show that u satisfies the Neumann boundary condition in the sense of traces at the boundary of C. The general results are applied to Kolmogorov equations of reaction-diffusion stochastic PDEs and Cahn-Hilliard stochastic PDEs in convex sets of suitable Hil…
The aim of this paper is to establish an abstract theory based on the so-called fractional-maximal distribution functions (FMDs). From the rough ideas introduced in~\cite{AM2007}, we develop and prove some abstract results related to the level-set inequalities and norm-comparisons by using the language of such FMDs. Particularly interesting is the applicability of our approach that has been shown in regularity and Calderón-Zygmund type estimates. In this paper, due to our research experience, we will establish global regularity estimates for two types of general quasilinear problems (problems …
We consider a class of abstract quasilinear parabolic problems with lower--order terms exhibiting a prescribed singular structure. We prove well--posedness and Lipschitz continuity of associated semiflows. Moreover, we investigate global existence of solutions and we extend the generalized principle of linearized stability to settings with initial values in critical spaces. These general results are applied to the surface diffusion flow in various settings.
We study an unbounded operator arising naturally after linearizing the system modelling the motion of a rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid. We show that this operator is $\mathcal{R}$ sectorial in $L^q$ for every $q\in (1,\infty)$, thus it has the maximal $L^p$-$L^q$ regularity property. Moreover, we show that the generated semigroup is exponentially stable with respect to the $L^q$ norm. Finally, we use the results to prove the global existence for small initial data, in an $L^p$-$L^q$ setting, for the original nonlinear problem.
This paper is devoted to the maximal $L^1$ regularity and asymptotic behavior for solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations under a scaling-invariant smallness assumption on the initial velocity. We obtain a new global $L^1$-in-time estimate for the Lipschitz seminorm of the velocity field without any smallness assumption on the initial density fluctuation. In the derivation of this estimate, we study the maximal $L^1$ regularity for a linear Stokes system with variable coefficients. The analysis tools are a use of the semigroup generated by a generalized Stokes ope…
In this paper we are concerned with global maximal regularity estimates for elliptic equations with degenerate weights. We consider both the linear case and the non-linear case. We show that higher integrability of the gradients can be obtained by imposing a local small oscillation condition on the weight and a local small Lipschitz condition on the boundary of the domain. Our results are new in the linear and non-linear case. We show by example that the relation between the exponent of higher integrability and the smallness parameters is sharp even in the linear or the unweighted case.
We show the existence of solution in the maximal $L_p-L_q$ regularity framework to a class of symmetric parabolic problems on a uniformly $C^2$ domain in ${\mathcal R}$. Our approach consist in showing ${\mathcal R}$ - boundedness of families of solution operators to corresponding resolvent problems first in the whole space, then in half-space, perturbed half-space and finally, using localization arguments, on the domain. Assuming additionally boudedness of the domain we also show exponential decay of the solution. In particular, our approach does not require assuming a priori the uniform Lopa…
In this note, we give an introduction to the concept of maximal $L^p$-regularity as a method to solve nonlinear partial differential equations. We first define maximal regularity for autonomous and non-autonomous problems and describe the connection to Fourier multipliers and $\mathcal R$-boundedness. The abstract results are applied to a large class of parabolic systems in the whole space and to general parabolic boundary value problems. For this, both the construction of solution operators for boundary value problems and a characterization of trace spaces of Sobolev spaces are discussed. For…
In this article, we set up the continuous maximal regularity theory for a class of linear differential operators on manifolds with singularities. These operators exhibit degenerate or singular behaviors while approaching the singular ends. Particular examples of such operators include differential operators defined on domains, which degenerate fast enough toward the boundary. Applications of the theory established herein are shown to the Yamabe flow, the porous medium equation, the parabolic $p$-Laplacian equation and the thin film equation. Some comments about the boundary blow-up problem, an…
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we use a classical method to establish Gaussian bounds of the fundamental matrix of a generalized parabolic Lamé system with only bounded and measurable coefficients. Second, we derive a maximal $L^1$ regularity result for the abstract Cauchy problem associated with a composite operator. In a concrete example, we also obtain maximal $L^1$ regularity for the Lamé system, from which it follows that the Lipschitz seminorm of the solutions to the Lamé system is globally $L^1$-in-time integrable. As an application, we use a Lagrangian approach to prove a…
This is a simplification of our prior work on the existence theory for the Rosseland-type equations. Inspired by the Rosseland equation in the conduction-radiation coupled heat transfer, we use the locally arbitrary growth conditions instead of the common global restricted growth conditions. In the Lebesgue square integrable space, the solution to the linear elliptic equation depends continuously on the coefficients matrix. This is a simple version of the maximal regularity. There exists a fixed point for the linearized map (compact and continuous) in a closed convex set. We also consider the …
We prove non-autonomous maximal $L^p$-regularity results on UMD spaces replacing the common Hölder assumption by a weaker fractional Sobolev regularity in time. This generalizes recent Hilbert space results by Dier and Zacher. In particular, on $L^q(Ω)$ we obtain maximal $L^p$-regularity for $p \ge 2$ and elliptic operators in divergence form with uniform $VMO$-modulus in space and $W^{α,p}$-regularity for $α> \frac{1}{2}$ in time.
In this paper we give a solution formula for the two-phase Stokes equations with and without surface tension and gravity in the whole space with flat interface. The solution formula has already considered by Shibata-Shimizu. However we reconstruct the formula so that we are able to prove resolvent estimate and maximal regularity estimate. In the previous work, they needed to assume additional conditions on normal components. We also take care of normal components, while the assumption becomes weaker than before. The method is based on an $H^\infty$ calculus which has already used for the Stoke…
We consider the initial-boundary value problem for the system of equations describing the flow of compressible isothermal mixture of arbitrary large number of components. The system consists of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and a subsystem of diffusion equations for the species. The subsystems are coupled by the form of the pressure and the strong cross-diffusion effects in the diffusion fluxes of the species. Assuming the existence of solutions to the symmetrized and linearized equations, proven in [35], we derive the estimates for the nonlinear equations and prove the local-in-tim…
The nonlinear semigroup generated by the subdifferential of a convex lower semicontinuous function $φ$ has a smoothing effect, discovered by H. Brézis, which implies maximal regularity for the evolution equation. We use this and Schaefer's fixed point theorem to solve the evolution equation perturbed by a Nemytskii-operator of sublinear growth. For this, we need that the sublevel sets of $φ$ are not only closed but even compact. We apply our results to the $p$-Laplacian and also to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator with respect to $p$-harmonic functions.
This paper is dedicated to the proof of new maximal regularity results involving Besov spaces for the heat equation in the half-space or in bounded or exterior domains of R^n. We strive for time independent a priori estimates in regularity spaces of type L^1(0,T;X) where X stands for some homogeneous Besov space. In the case of bounded domains, the results that we get are similar to those of the whole space or of the half-space. For exterior domains, we need to use mixed Besov norms in order to get a control on the low frequencies. Those estimates are crucial for proving global-in-time results…
In the theory of non-linear parabolic and elliptic partial differential equations, the notion of maximal regularity plays an essential role in establishing existence, regularity and boundedness of solutions. There is a long history of works where sufficient conditions for maximal regularity have been established: First scalar equations and systems of finitely many coupled equations have been considered. Around 2000, the vector-valued case with infinite-dimensional range space $E$ became accessible to the development and progress in theory of $\mathcal{R}$-bounded operator families and its clos…
\begin{abstract}\label{abstract} We consider a non-autonomous evolutionary problem \[ \dot{u} (t)+\A(t)u(t)=f(t), \quad u(0)=u_0 \] where the operator $\A(t):V\to V^\prime$ is associated with a form $\fra(t,.,.):V\times V \to \R$ and $u_0\in V$. Our main concern is to prove well-posedness with maximal regularity which means the following. Given a Hilbert space $H$ such that $V$ is continuously and densely embedded into $H$ and given $f\in L^2(0,T;H)$ we are interested in solutions $u \in H^1(0,T;H)\cap L^2(0,T;V)$. We do prove well-posedness in this sense whenever the form is piecewise Lipschi…
We establish local $C^{1,α}$-regularity for some $α\in(0,1)$ and $C^α$-regularity for any $α\in(0,1)$ of local minimizers of the functional \[ v\ \mapsto\ \int_Ωϕ(x,|Dv|)\,dx, \] where $ϕ$ satisfies a $(p,q)$-growth condition. Establishing such a regularity theory with sharp, general conditions has been an open problem since the 1980s. In contrast to previous results, we formulate the continuity requirement on $ϕ$ in terms of a single condition for the map $(x,t)\mapsto ϕ(x,t)$, rather than separately in the $x$- and $t$-directions. Thus we can obtain regularity results for functionals without…
