We demonstrate that two-dimensional chiral superconductors on curved surfaces spontaneously develop magnetic flux. This geometric Meissner effect provides an unequivocal signature of chiral super- conductivity, which could be observed in layered materials under stress. We also employ the effect to explain some puzzling questions related to the location of zero-energy Majorana modes.
We present a study of the basic microscopic model of an $s$-wave superconductor with frustrated interband interaction. When frustration is strong, such an interaction gives raise to a $s+is$ state. This is a $s$-wave superconductor that spontaneously breaks time reversal symmetry. We show that, in addition to the known $s+is$ state, there is additional phase, where the system's bulk is a conventional $s$-wave state, but superconducting surface states break time reversal symmetry. Furthermore, we show that $s+is$ superconductors can have spontaneous boundary currents and spontaneous magnetic fi…
The relaxation iterative method is used to minimize Ginzburg-Landau model for the two-band superconductor with Josephson-coupling. A stable spontaneous vortex-antivortex pair with long range order has been revealed. Our result appears due to the Josephson-coupling effect, which leads to a linearly-dependence of total free energy on the distance between vortex-antivortex pair, hence accounts for this phenomenon.
We consider a Rashba spin-orbit coupled nanowire with anisotropic spin-singlet superconducting pairing and time-reversal-invariant symmetry. We explore the evolution of the topological superconducting phases of this system due to geometric deformations for the representative case of a wire bent in a semielliptical shape. We find that when the system is in its topological superconducting phase, strong inhomogeneities in the profile curvature can produce a pair of localized eigenmodes, which can be attributed to a nonuniform topological phase. The curved geometric profile also allows to tune the…
Spontaneous currents in a superconductor with s+is symmetry
我们分析了强空穴掺杂Ba $_{1-x}$ K $_x$ Fe $_2$ As $_2$的候选超导态$s + is$态。
In chiral $p$-wave superconductors, magnetic flux patterns may appear spontaneously when translational symmetry is broken such as at surfaces, domain walls, or impurities. However, in the candidate material Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ no direct signs of such magnetic fields have been detected experimentally. In this paper, the flux pattern at the edge of a disk-shaped sample is examined using the phenomenological Ginzburg Landau approach. The detailed shape of the flux pattern, including self-screening, is computed numerically for different surface types by systematically scanning a range of boundary condit…
The effects of finite temperature, Meissner screening and surface roughness on the spontaneous edge current for higher chirality quasi-two dimensional superconductors are studied in the continuum limit using the quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. We find that the total spontaneous current is non-zero at finite temperature $T$ and maximized near $T=T_c/2$, where $T_c$ is the transition temperature, although it vanishes at $T=0$. In the presence of surface roughness, we observe a surface current inversion in the chiral $d$-wave case that can be understood in terms of a disorder induced $s$-wa…
Recently, a theoretical study [Li {\it et al.},~npj Quantum Materials 6, 36 (2021)] investigated a model of a disordered $d$-wave superconductor, and reported local time-reversal symmetry breaking current loops for sufficiently high disorder levels. Since the pure $d$-wave superconducting state does not break time-reversal symmetry, it is surprising that such persistent currents arise purely from nonmagnetic disorder. Here we perform a detailed theoretical investigation of such disorder-induced orbital currents, and show that the occurrence of the currents can be traced to local extended $s$-w…
We show that multiband superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry can produce spontaneous currents and magnetic fields in response to the local variations of pairing constants. Considering the iron pnictide superconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ as an example we demonstrate that both the point-group symmetric $s+is$ state and the C$_4$-symmetry breaking $s+id$ states produce in general the same magnitudes of spontaneous magnetic fields. In the $s+is$ state these fields are polarized mainly in ab crystal plane, while in the $s+id$ state their ab-plane and c-axis components are of th…
We investigate superconducting phase transition in superconductor(S)/ferromagnet(F) bilayer with Rasba spin-orbit interaction at S/F interface. This spin-orbit coupling produces spontaneous supercurrents flowing inside the atomic-thickness region near the interface, which are compensated by the screening Meissner currents [S. Mironov and A. Buzdin, Phys. Rev. Lett \textbf{118}, 077001 (2017)]. In the case of thin superconducting film the emergence of the spontaneous surface currents causes the increase of the superconducting critical temperature and we calculate the actual value of the critica…
We present a systematic investigation of muon-stopping states in superconductors that reportedly exhibit spontaneous magnetic fields below their transition temperatures due to time-reversal symmetry breaking. These materials include elemental rhenium, several intermetallic systems and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We demonstrate that the presence of the muon leads to only a limited and relatively localized perturbation to the local crystal structure, while any small changes to the electronic structure occur several electron volts below the Fermi energy leading to only minimal changes in the charge density on…
We consider magnetic field screening and spontaneous magnetic fields in $s+is$ and $s+id$ superconductors both analytically and numerically. We show that in general, the linearized model couples the moduli of order parameters to the magnetic modes. This causes magnetic field screening that does not follow the standard exponential law and hence cannot be characterized by a single length scale: the London penetration length. We also demonstrate that the resulting linear mixed modes, correctly predict spontaneous fields and their orientation. We show that these mixed modes cause external fields t…
Spatial distributions of spontaneous magnetic fields near a surface of cuprate high-$T_C$ superconductor YBCO with broken time-reversal symmetry are calculated using the Ginzburg-Landau theory derived from the $t-J$ model. It is found that the magnetic field exists in a narrow region inside the superconductor, and it decays quickly outside the surface. Experimental approaches possible to detect such spontaneous magnetic fields are discussed.
We report the study of spontaneous magnetization (i.e., spin-polarization) for time-reversal symmetry (TRS)-breaking superconductors with unitary pairing potentials, in the absence of external magnetic fields or Zeeman fields. Spin-singlet ($Δ_s$) and spin-triplet ($Δ_t$) pairings can coexist in superconductors whose crystal structure lacks inversion symmetry. The TRS can be spontaneously broken once a relative phase of $\pmπ/2$ is developed, forming a TRS-breaking unitary pairing state ($Δ_s\pm iΔ_t$). We demonstrate that such unitary pairing could give rise to spontaneous spin-polarization w…
Surfaces of $d$-wave superconductors may host a substantial density of zero-energy Andreev states. The zero-energy flat band appears due to a topological constraint, but comes with a cost in free energy. We have recently found that an adjustment of the surface states can drive a phase transition into a phase with finite superflow that breaks time-reversal symmetry and translational symmetry along the surface. The associated Doppler shifts of Andreev states to finite energies lower the free energy. Direct experimental verification of such a phase is still technically difficult and controversial…
