We investigate the existence conditions and propagation properties of electron-acoustic solitary waves in a plasma consisting of an electron beam fluid, a cold electron fluid, and a hot suprathermal electron component modeled by a $κ$-distribution function. The Sagdeev pseudopotential method was used to investigate the occurrence of stationary-profile solitary waves. We have determined how the soliton characteristics depend on the electron beam parameters. It is found that the existence domain for solitons becomes narrower with an increase in the suprathermality of hot electrons, increasing the beam speed, and decreasing the beam-to-cold electron population ratio.
The linear electron acoustic waves propagating in plasmas with two kappa-distributed electrons and stationary ions are investigated. The temperatures of the two electrons are assumed to be the same, but the kappa indices are not. It shows that if one kappa index is small enough and the other one is large enough, a weak damping regime of the electron acoustic waves exists. The dispersions and damping rates are numerically studied. The parameter spaces for the weakly damped electron acoustic waves are analyzed. Moreover, the electron acoustic waves in the present model are compared with those in…
The Sagdeev pseudopotential method is used to investigate the occurrence and the dynamics of fully nonlinear electrostatic solitary structures in a plasma containing suprathermal hot electrons, in the presence of massive charged dust particles in the background. The soliton existence domain is delineated, and its parametric dependence on different physical parameters is clarified.
The instability of the dust-acoustic waves driven by drifting electrons and ions in a dusty plasma is investigated by the kinetic theory. All the plasma components (electrons, ions and dust particles) are assumed to be the Lorentzian kappa-distributions. The spectral indexes kappa of the kappa-distributions for the three plasma components are different from each other. The obtained instability growth rate depends on the physical quantities of the plasma not only, but on the spectral indexes. The numerical results for the kappa-effect on the instability growth rate show that, if the normalized …
The linear and nonlinear properties of large amplitude electron-acoustic waves are investigated in a magnetized plasma comprising two distinct electron populations (hot and cold) and immobile ions. The hot electrons are assumed to be in a non-Maxwellian state, characterized by an excess of superthermal particles, here modelled by a kappa-type long-tailed distribution function. Waves are assumed to propagate obliquely to the ambient magnetic field. Two types of electrostatic modes are shown to exist in the linear regime, and their properties are briefly analyzed. A nonlinear pseudopotential typ…
We propose a new acceleration mechanism for charged particles by using cylindrical or spherical non-linear acoustic waves propagating in ion-electron plasma. The acoustic wave, which is described by the cylindrical or spherical Kortweg-de Vries equation, grows in its wave height as the wave shrinks to the center. Charged particles confined by the electric potential accompanied with the shrinking wave get energy by repetition of reflections. We obtain power law spectrums of energy for accelerated particles. As an application, we discuss briefly that high energy particles coming from the Sun are…
Separate spin evolution quantum hydrodynamics is generalized to include the Coulomb exchange interaction. The Coulomb exchange interaction is considered as the interaction between the spin-down electrons being in the quantum states occupied by one electron, giving main contribution in the equilibrium. The generalized model is applied to study the non-linear spin-electron acoustic waves. Existence of the spin-electron acoustic soliton is demonstrated. Contributions of the concentration, spin polarization, and exchange interaction in the properties of the spin electron acoustic soliton are studi…
A standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been established by using the reductive perturbation method to investigate the propagation of electrostatic dust-acoustic waves, and their modulational instability as well as the formation of localized electrostatic envelope solitons in an electron depleted unmagnetized dusty plasma system comprising opposite polarity dust grains and super-thermal positive ions. The relevant physical plasma parameters (viz., charge, mass, number density of positive and negative dust grains, and super-thermality of the positive ions, etc.) have rigorous impact to re…
This paper presents the detailed study of the controlled experimental observation and characterization of Ion Acoustic soliton in the quiescent argon plasma produced by filamentary discharge and confined in a multi-pole line cusp magnetic field device named Multi-pole line Cusp Plasma Device (MPD). In this system, the electrostatic fluctuations are found to be less than 1%, a characteristic of quiescent plasma. Ion acoustic soliton has been excited in MPD, and its propagation velocity and width of them are measured experimentally and compared with the 1-D Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. The …
The non-linear evolution of spin-electron acoustic, positron-acoustic, and spin-electron-positron acoustic waves is considered. It is demonstrated that weakly nonlinear dynamics of each wave leads to the soliton formation. Altogether, we report on existence of three different solitons. The spin-electron acoustic soliton known for electron-ion plasmas is described for electron-positron-ion plasmas for the first time. The existence of the spin-electron-positron acoustic soliton is reported for the first time. The positron-acoustic soliton and the spin-electron-positron acoustic soliton arise as …
The spin-electron-acoustic waves (sometimes called the spin-plasmons) can be found in degenerate electron gas if the spin-up electrons and spin down electrons move relatively each other. Here, we suggest relativistic hydrodynamics with the separate spin evolution which allows us to study linear and nonlinear spin-electron-acoustic waves, including the spin-electron-acoustic solitons. Presented hydrodynamic model is the corresponding generalization of the relativistic hydrodynamic model with the average reverse gamma factor evolution which consists of the equations for evolution of the followin…
The propagation characteristics and interactions between the dust acoustic (DA) one and multi solitons in an unmagnetized dusty plasmas composing negatively charged mobile dust, Boltzmann distributed electrons, nonextensive distributed cold and nonthermal distributed hot ions are studied. The well known extended Poincar Lighthill Kuo (PLK) method is employed to derive the two sided Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equations. The solutions of KdV equations are constructed using the Hirota method both for one and multi solitons. The phase shifts are determined for the interaction of one, two and three DA…
The basic features of nucleus-acoustic (NA) envelope bright and dark solitons, which exist in degenerate quantum plasmas, have been theoretically investigated by deriving the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. The reductive perturbation method, which is valid for a small but finite amplitude limit, is employed. It is found that the bright envelope solitons are modulationally unstable, whereas the dark ones are stable. It is also observed that the fundamental properties (viz. Modulational instability (MI) growth rate, width and energy concentration of NA waves, etc.) of NA unstable bright en…
A theoretical investigation of the modulational instability (MI) of dust-acoustic waves (DAWs) by deriving a nonlinear Schrödinger equation in an electron depleted opposite polarity dusty plasma system containing non-extensive positive ions has been presented. The conditions for MI of DAWs and formation of envelope solitons have been investigated. The sub-extensivity and super-extensivity of positive ions are seen to change the stable and unstable parametric regimes of DAWs. The addition of dust grains causes to change the width of both bright and dark envelope solitons. The findings of this s…
In this paper, the nonlinear theory of plasma waves is extended to the plasmas that their equilibrium state are specified by the non-Maxwellian (here kappa) distribution. We believe that the extension is very important since most of the space and some of laboratory plasmas are not in the Maxwellian equilibrium. Although the linear theory of this issue has been known for the decades but, to our knowledge, this is the first attempt in opening the gate to the nonlinear world of plasma waves with the non-Maxwellian equilibrium. As an example the ion-acoustic solitons are studied in this framework …
Propagation of ion-acoustic solitary waves (IASWs) is studied using the hydrodynamic equations coupled with the Poisson equation in a warm plasma consisting of adiabatic ions and superthermal (Kappa distributed) electrons in presence of an electron-beam component. In the linear limit, the dispersion relation for ion-acoustic (IA) waves is obtained by linearizing of basic equations. On the other hand, in the nonlinear analysis, an energy-balance like equation involving Sagdeev's pseudo-potential is derived in order to investigate arbitrary amplitude IA solitons. The Mach number range is determi…
The overtaking collisions of ion-acoustic solitons (IASs) in presence of trapping effects of electrons are studied based on a fully kinetic simulation approach. The method is able to provide all the kinetic details of the process alongside the fluid-level quantities self consistently. Solitons are produced naturally by utilizing the chain formation phenomenon, then are arranged in a new simulation box to test different scenarios of overtaking collisions. Three achievements are reported here. Firstly, simulations prove the long-time life span of the ion-acoustic solitons in the presence of trap…
In this work, the phenomenon of formation of localised electrostatic waves (ESW) or soliton is considered in a warm magnetoplasma with the possibility of non-thermal electron distribution. The parameter regime considered here is relevant in case of magnetospheric plasmas. We show that deviation from a usual relaxed Maxwellian distribution of the electron population has a significant bearing in the allowed parameter regime, where these ESWs can be found. We further consider the presence of more than one electron temperature, which is inspired by recent space-based observations[key-2].
Modulational instability (MI) of ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) has been theoretically investigated in a plasma system which is composed of inertial warm adiabatic ions, isothermal positrons, and two temperature superthermal electrons. A nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation is derived by using reductive perturbation method that governs the MI of the IAWs. The numerical analysis of the solution of NLS equation shows the existence of both stable (dark envelope solitons exist) and unstable (bright envelope solitons exist) regimes of IAWs. It is observed that the basic features (viz. stability of the w…

The evolution of the coupled drift wave (DW) and energetic-particle-induced geodesic acoustic mode (EGAM) nonlinear system is investigated using the fully nonlinear coupled DW-EGAM two-field equations, with emphasis on the turbulence spreading in the form of soliton and the nonlinear energy transfer between DW and EGAM. Four scenarios with different combinations of EGAM initial amplitudes and linear EGAM growth rates are designed to delineate the effects of linear EGAM drive and finite EGAM amplitude on DW nonlinear dynamic evolution. A generalized plasma model having warm ions, iso-thermal electrons, super-thermal electrons and positrons is considered to theoretically investigate the modulational instability (MI) of ion-acoustic waves (IAWs). A standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived by applying reductive perturbation method to study the MI of IAWs. It is observed that the MI criteria of the IAWs are significantly modified by various plasma parameters. The present results should be useful in understanding the conditions for MI of IAWs which are relevant to both space and laboratory plasma system.

The nonlinear fluid theory developed by Schamel suggests a modified KdV equation to describe the temporal evolution of ion acoustic (IA) solitons in the presence of trapped electrons. The validity of this theory is studied here by verifying solitons main characteristic, i.e., stability against successive mutual collisions. We have employed a kinetic model as a more comprehensive theory than the fluid one, and utilized a fully kinetic simulation approach (both ions and electrons are treated based on the Vlasov equation). In the simulation approach, these solitons are excited self-consistently b…
The modulational instability (MI) of the dust-acoustic waves (DAWs) in an electron-positron-ion-dust plasma (containing super-thermal electrons, positrons and ions along with negatively charged adiabatic dust grains) is investigated by the analysis of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). To derive the NLSE, the reductive perturbation method has been employed. Two different parametric regions for stable and unstable DAWs are observed. The presence of super-thermal electrons, positrons and ions significantly modifies both the stable and unstable regions. The critical wave number $k_c$ (at …
Using the extended Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo (PLK) reductive perturbation method to study the small-amplitude ion acoustic solitary wave (IASW) dynamics (propagation and interaction), it is shown that in Thomas-Fermi magneto-plasma consisting of inertial-less degenerate electrons and positrons and isothermal ions, distinctive features emerge when the ultra-relativistic degeneracy pressure applies to electrons and positrons. Calculations show that ion-acoustic solitary waves may interact differently in such plasmas under ultra-relativistic degeneracy pressure.
Using the extended Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo (PLK) reductive perturbation method, which incorporates the phase-shift variations, it is shown that common features on propagation and head-on collisions of ion-acoustic waves exist for a magnetized plasmas of different inertial-less particle distributions. For instance it is remarked that, the soliton amplitude is always independent of magnetic field strength while strictly depends on its angle regarding the propagation direction. Both types of solitons (compressive or rarefactive) are shown to exist which are defined through the critical angle $γ=π/…

Acoustic solitons obtained through a reductive perturbation scheme are normally governed by a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In multispecies plasmas at critical compositions the coefficient of the quadratic nonlinearity vanishes. Extending the analytic treatment then leads to a modified KdV (mKdV) equation, which is characterized by a cubic nonlinearity and is even in the electrostatic potential. The mKdV equation admits solitons having opposite electrostatic polarities, in contrast to KdV solitons which can only be of one polarity at a time. A Hirota formalism has been used to derive the t…

We have used the phase portraits of the dynamical system describing the nonlinear behaviour of ion acoustic waves to confirm the existence of different solitary structures. We have also investigated the transition of different solitary structures: soliton (before the form…
Theoretical and numerical studies are presented of the amplitude modulation of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) propagating in space plasmas whose constituents are inertial cold electrons, Boltzmann distributed hot electrons and stationary ions. Perturbations oblique to the carrier EAW propagation direction have been considered. The stability analysis, based on a nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE), reveals that the EAW may become unstable; the stability criteria depend on the angle $θ$ between the modulation and propagation directions. Different types of localized EA excitations are shown to…

Propagation of solitary wave in dusty plasmas started to draw the attention of the physicists since the early 90s. The presence of superthermal particles seems to have a great impact on such waves, as they indicate the existence of non-thermal systems. It has been observed that the superthermal population is capable of altering the nature of the plasmas waves. In the present paper, the effect of the superthermal electron population on the dust ion acoustic solitary wave has been explored. The plasma is considered un-magnetized and composed of two components of superthermal electrons (of two di…
The propagation of nonlinear electron- acoustic waves (EAWs) in an unmagnetized collision- less plasma system consisting of a cold electron fluid, superthermal hot electrons and stationary ions is investigated. A reductive perturbation method is employed to obtain a modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equa- tion for the first-order potential. The small amplitude electron-acoustic solitary wave, e.g., soliton and dou- ble layer (DL) solutions are presented, and the effects of superthermal electrons on the nature of the solitons are also discussed. But the results shows that the weak stationary EA…
Ion acoustic (IA) solitons are accompanied by vortex-shaped nonlinear structures (e.g. hollows, plateaus or humps) in the electron distribution function, called electron holes, portraying trapped electrons. These structures appear as charged flexible clouds (shielded by the background plasma) in the phase space with their own inertia, depending on the number of trapped electrons. According to simulation studies, electron holes tend to merge in pairs until one accumulative hole remains in the simulation box. This tendency has been analytically and qualitatively explained in the frame of the ene…

A double pair plasma system containing cold inertial positive and negative ions, and inertialess super-thermal electrons and positrons is considered. The standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived by using the reductive perturbation method to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of the ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) as well as their modulation instability. The nonlinear propagation of electrostatic dust-acoustic (DA) waves in a magnetized dusty plasma consisting of negatively charged mobile dusts, nonthermal fast electrons and trapped ions with vortex-like distribution is studied. Using the reductive perturbation technique, a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-like equation is derived which governs the dynamics of the small-amplitude solitary waves in a magnetized dusty nonthermal plasma. It is found that due to the dust thermal pressure, there exists a critical value $(β_c)$ of the nothermal parameter $β~(>1)$, denoting the percentage of energetic electro…
Propagation of large amplitude ion-acoustic solitary waves (IASWs) in a fully relativistic plasma consisting of cold ions and ultrarelativistic hot electrons and positrons is investigated using the Sagdeev's pseudopotential method in a relativistic hydrodynamics model. Effects of streaming speed of plasma fluid, thermal energy, positron density and positron temperature on large amplitude IASWs are studied by analysis of the pseudopotential structure. It is found that in regions that the streaming speed of plasma fluid is larger than that of solitary wave, by increasing the streaming speed of p…
The excitation of precursor solitons ahead of a rapidly moving object in a fluid, a spectacular phenomenon in hydrodynamics that has often been observed ahead of moving ships, has surprisingly not been investigated in plasmas where the fluid model holds good for low frequency excitations such as ion acoustic waves. In this paper we report the first experimental observation of precursor solitons in a flowing dusty plasma. The nonlinear solitary dust acoustic waves (DAWs) are excited by a supersonic mass flow of the dust particles over an electrostatic potential hill. In a frame where the fluid …
This article is a brief review of the results of studying the collapse of sound waves in media with positive dispersion, which is described in terms of the three-dimensional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. The KP instability of one-dimensional solitons in the long-wavelength limit is considered using the expansion for the corresponding spectral problem. It is shown that the KP instability also takes place for two-dimensional solitons in the framework of the three-dimensional KP equation with positive dispersion. According to B.B. Kadomtsev this instability belongs to the self-focusing ty…
Linear and nonlinear ion-acoustic waves are studied in a fluid model for non-relativistic, unmagnetized quantum plasma with electrons with an arbitrary degeneracy degree. The equation of state for electrons follows from a local Fermi-Dirac distribution function and apply equally well both to fully degenerate or classical, non-degenerate limits. Ions are assumed to be cold. Quantum diffraction effects through the Bohm potential are also taken into account. A general coupling parameter valid for dilute and dense plasmas is proposed. The linear dispersion relation of the ion-acoustic waves is obt…
