We observe collective quantum spin states of an ensemble of atoms in a one-dimensional light-atom interface. Strings of hundreds of cesium atoms trapped in the evanescent fiel of a tapered nanofiber are prepared in a coherent spin state, a superposition of the two clock states. A weak quantum nondemolition measurement of one projection of the collective spin is performed using a detuned probe dispersively coupled to the collective atomic observable, followed by a strong destructive measurement of the same spin projection. For the coherent spin state we achieve the value of the quantum projection noise 40 dB above the detection noise, well above the 3 dB required for reconstruction of the negative Wigner function of nonclassical states. We analyze the effects of strong spatial inhomogeneity inherent to atoms trapped and probed by the evanescent waves. We furthermore study temporal dynamics of quantum fluctuations relevant for measurement-induced spin squeezing and assess the impact of thermal atomic motion. This work paves the road towards observation of spin squeezed and entangled states and many-body interactions in 1D spin ensembles.
We present the implementation of a programmable atom-photon quantum interface, employing a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion and single photons. Depending on its mode of operation, the interface serves as a bi-directional atom-photon quantum-state converter, as a source of entangled atom-photon states, or as a quantum frequency converter of single photons. The interface lends itself particularly to interfacing ions with single or entangled photons in hybrid quantum networks.
Quantum interface links stationary qubits in quantum memory with flying photonic qubits in optical transmission channels and constitutes a critical element for future quantum internet. Entanglement of quantum interfaces is a key step for realization of quantum networks. Through heralded detection of photon interference, here we generate multipartite entanglement between 25 (or 9) individually addressable quantum interfaces in a multiplexed atomic quantum memory array and confirm genuine 22 (or 9) partite entanglement, respectively. Experimental entanglement of a record-high number of quantum i…
利用最近得到的激发态和基态原子之间的相互作用能的(通用)公式(Sherkunov Y 2007 Phys. Rev.
We study the atom-photon quantum interface with intracavity Rydberg-blocked atomic ensemble where the ground-Rydberg transition is realized by two-photon transition. Via theoretical analysis, we report our recent findings of the Jaynes-Cummings model on optical domain and robust atom-photon quantum gate enabled by this platform. The requirement on the implementation is mild which includes an optical cavity of moderately high finesse, typical alkali atoms such as Rb or Cs and the condition that cold atomic ensemble is well within the Rydberg blockade radius. The analysis focuses on the atomic e…
The realization of a long-distance, distributed quantum network based on quantum memory nodes that are linked by photonic channels remains an outstanding challenge. We propose a quantum network node based on neutral alkali atoms coupled to nanophotonic crystal cavities that combines a long-lived memory qubit with a photonic interface at the telecom range, thereby enabling the long-distance distribution of entanglement over low loss optical fibers. We present a novel protocol for the generation of an atom-photon entangled state which uses telecom transitions between excited states of the alkali…

We develop a general approach for the characterization of atom-array platforms as light-matter interfaces, focusing on their application in quantum memory and photonic entanglement generation. Our approach is based on the mapping of atom-array problems to a generic 1D model of light interacting with a collective dipole. We find that the efficiency of light-matter coupling, which in turn determines those of quantum memory and entanglement, is given by the on-resonance reflectivity of the 1D scattering problem, $r_0=C/(1+C)$, where $C$ is a cooperativity parameter of the model. For 2D and 3D ato…
We report on the observation of strong transmission line shape alterations in a cold-atom hollow-core fiber interface. We show that this can lead to a significant overestimation of the assigned resonant optical depth for high atom densities. By modeling light beam propagation in an inhomogeneous dispersive medium, we attribute the observations to micro lensing in the atomic ensemble in combination with the mode selection of the atom-fiber interface. The approach is confirmed by studies of Rydberg EIT line shapes.
We investigate optimal conditions for the quantum interface between a signal photon pulse and one-dimensional chain consisting of a varied number of atoms. The tested object is physically designed as an atomic array of tripod-type atoms confined with a nanoscale dielectric waveguide and experiencing its fundamental HE11 mode. The efficiency of interaction is mainly limited by achieved overlap and coupling of the waveguide evanescent field with the trapped atoms. We verify those physical conditions when the coupling within the main scattering channels would be sufficient for further providing v…
Single particle-resolved fluorescence imaging is an enabling technology in cold-atom physics. However, so far, this technique was not available for nanophotonic atom-light interfaces. Here, we image single atoms that are trapped and optically interfaced using an optical nanofiber. Near-resonant light is scattered off the atoms and imaged while counteracting heating mechanisms via degenerate Raman cooling. We detect trapped atoms within 150 ms and record image sequences of given atoms. Building on our technique, we perform two experiments which are conditioned on the number and position of the …
Optical non-linearities at the single photon level are key features to build efficient photon-photon gates and to implement quantum networks. Such optical non-linearities can be obtained using an ideal two-level system such as a single atom coupled to an optical cavity. While efficient, such atom-photon interface however presents a fixed bandwidth, determined by the spontaneous emission time and thus the spectral width of the cavity-enhanced two-level transition, preventing an efficient transmission to bandwidth-mismatched atomic systems in a single quantum network. In the present work, we pro…
An atom-waveguide system, which presents one of the quantum interfaces that enable strong couplings between light and atoms, can support tightly-confined guided modes of light. In this distinctive quantum interface, we theoretically investigate the crossover from a delocalized to localized atomic excitation under long-range dipole-dipole interactions and lattice disorders. Both localization lengths of the excitation distributions and power-law scalings of dissipative von Neumann entanglement entropy show signatures of this crossover. We further calculate numerically the level statistics of the…
The development of quantum algorithms to solve quantum chemistry problems has offered a promising new paradigm of performing computer simulations at the scale of atoms and molecules. Although majority of the research so far has focused on designing quantum algorithms to compute ground and excited state energies and forces, it is useful to run different simulation tasks, such as geometry optimization, with these algorithms as subroutines. Towards this end, we have created an interface for the Variational Quantum Eigensolver based molecular Energy (VQE-E) and molecular Force (VQE-F) code to the …
We demonstrate an optical tweezer based single atom trapping on an optical nanofiber cavity. We show that the fluorescence of single atoms trapped on the nanofiber cavity can be readily observed in real-time through the fiber guided modes. The photon correlation measurements further clarify the atom number and the dynamics of the trap. The trap lifetime is measured to be 52$\pm$5 ms. From the photon statistics measured for different cavity decay rates, the effective coupling rate of the atom-cavity interface is estimated to be 34$\pm$2 MHz. This yields a cooperativity of 5.4$\pm$0.6 and a cavi…
The realization of an efficient quantum optical interface for multi-qubit systems is an outstanding challenge in science and engineering. Using two atoms in individually-controlled optical tweezers coupled to a nanofabricated photonic crystal cavity, we demonstrate entanglement generation, fast non-destructive readout, and full quantum control of atomic qubits. The entangled state is verified in free space after being transported away from the cavity by encoding the qubits into long-lived states and using dynamical decoupling. Our approach bridges quantum operations at an optical link and in f…

A chiral photonic interface is a quantum system that has different probabilities for emitting photons to the left and right. An on-chip compatible chiral interface is attractive for both fundamental studies of light-matter interactions and applications to quantum information processing. We propose such a chiral interface based on superconducting circuits, which has wide bandwidth, rich tunability, and high tolerance to fabrication variations. The proposed interface consists of a core that uses Cooper-pair boxes (CPBs) to break time-reversal symmetry, and two superconducting transmons that conn…
Collective decays of multiply-excited atoms become subradiant and bound in space when they are strongly coupled to the guided modes in an atom-waveguide interface. In this interface, we analyze their average density-density and modified third-order correlations via Kubo cumulant expansions, which can arise and sustain for long time. The shape-preserving dimers and trimers of atomic excitations emerge in the most subradiant coupling regime of light-induced dipole-dipole interactions. This leads to a potential application of quantum information processing and quantum storage in the encoded nonre…
We experimentally demonstrate hyperfine optical pumping of rubidium atoms probed by an evanescent electromagnetic field at a dielectric-vapor interface. This light-atom interaction at the nanoscale is investigated using a right angle prism integrated with a vapor cell and excited by evanescent wave under total internal reflection. An efficient hyperfine optical pumping, leading to a complete suppression of absorption on the probed evanescent signal, is observed when a pump laser beam is sent at normal incidence to the interface. In contrast, when the pump and probe beams are co-propagating in …
The quantum interface (QI) that generates entanglement between photonic and spin-wave (atomic memory) qubits is a basic building block for quantum repeaters. Realizing ensemble-based repeaters in practice requires quantum memory providing long lifetime and multimode capacity. Significant progresses have been achieved on these separate goals. The remaining challenge is to combine long-lived and multimode memories into a single QI. Here, by establishing multimode, magnetic-field-insensitive and long-wavelength spin-wave storage in laser-cooled atoms that are placed inside a phase-passively-stabi…
We develop a light-matter interface enabling strong and uniform coupling between a chain of cold atoms and photons of an optical cavity. This interface is a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity, doubly resonant for both the wavelength of the atomic transition and for a geometrically commensurate red-detuned intracavity trapping lattice. Fulfilling the condition of a strong and uniform atom-photon coupling requires optimization of the spatial overlap between the two standing waves in the cavity. In a strong-coupling cavity, where the mode waists and Rayleigh range are small, we derive the expression of the…
We demonstrate that a dispersive imaging technique based on the Faraday effect can measure the atom number in a large, ultracold atom cloud with a precision below the atom shot noise level. The minimally destructive character of the technique allows us to take multiple images of the same cloud, which enables sub-atom shot noise measurement precision of the atom number and allows for an in situ determination of the measurement precision. We have developed a noise model that quantitatively describes the noise contributions due to photon shot noise in the detected light and the noise associated w…
