We formulate the notion of quantum channels in the framework of quantum tomography and address there the issue of whether such maps can be regarded as classical stochastic maps. In particular kernels of maps acting on probability representation of quantum states are derived for qubit and bosonic systems. In the latter case it results that a single mode Gaussian quantum channel corresponds to non-Gaussian classical channels.
Non-redundant and normalized four-component vector tomographic portrait fully describing the states of spin 1/2 quantum particles was introduced. Dequantizer and quantizer for such portrait were found, and generalization to the case of spin (2^N-1)/2 was done (N is a natural number). It was shown that such a portrait is completely defined by a thriple of non-complanar vectors with the lengthes equal or less then unity. A clear geometric interpretation of the choice of parameters for finding normalized dequantizers and quantizers is presented and numerical examples of such dequantizers and quan…
Non-signalling quantum channels -- relevant in, e.g., the study of Bell and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen scenarios -- may be simulated via affine combinations of local operations in bipartite scenarios. Moreover, when these channels correspond to stochastic maps between classical variables, such simulation is possible even in multipartite scenarios. These two results have proven useful when studying the properties of these channels, such as their communication and information processing power, and even when defining measures of the non-classicality of physical phenomena (such as Bell non-classicali…
The characterization of quantum processes, e.g. communication channels, is an essential ingredient for establishing quantum information systems. For quantum key distribution protocols, the amount of overall noise in the channel determines the rate at which secret bits are distributed between authorized partners. In particular, tomographic protocols allow for the full reconstruction, and thus characterization, of the channel. Here, we perform quantum process tomography of high-dimensional quantum communication channels with dimensions ranging from 2 to 5. We can thus explicitly demonstrate the …

As progress is made towards the first generation of error-corrected quantum computers, robust characterization and validation protocols are required to assess the noise environments of physical quantum processors. While standard coherence metrics and characterization protocols such as T1 and T2, process tomography, and randomized benchmarking are now ubiquitous, these techniques provide only partial information about the dynamic multi-qubit loss channels responsible for processor errors, which can be described more fully by a Lindblad operator in the master equation formalism. Here, we introdu…
