Employing a Mathematica symbolic computer algebra package called xTensor, we present $(1+3)$-covariant special case proofs of the shear-free perfect fluid conjecture in General Relativity. We first present the case where the pressure is constant, and where the acceleration is parallel to the vorticity vector. These cases were first presented in their covariant form by Senovilla et. al. We then provide a covariant proof for the case where the acceleration and vorticity vectors are orthogonal, which leads to the existence of a Killing vector along the vorticity. This Killing vector satisfies the new constraint equations resulting from the vanishing of the shear. Furthermore, it is shown that in order for the conjecture to be true, this Killing vector must have a vanishing spatially projected directional covariant derivative along the velocity vector field. This in turn implies the existence of another \textit{basic} vector field along the direction of the vorticity for the conjecture to hold. Finally, we show that in general, there exist a \textit{basic} vector field parallel to the acceleration for which the conjecture is true.
Einstein's theory of general relativity describes gravity as the interaction of particles with space-time geometry, as opposed to interacting with a physical fluid, as in the old gravitational aether theories. Moreover, any theoretical physicist would tell you that, despite its counter-intuitive structure, general relativity is one of the simplest, most beautiful, and successful theories in physics, that has withstood a diverse battery of precision tests over the past century. So, is there any motivation to relax its fundamental principle, and re-introduce a gravitational aether? Here, I give …
The Goldberg-Sachs theorem is an exact result on shear-free null geodesics in a vacuum spacetime. It is compared and contrasted with an exact result for pressure-free matter: shear-free flows cannot both expand and rotate. In both cases, the shear-free condition restricts the way distant matter can influence the local gravitational field. This leads to intriguing discontinuities in the relation of the General Relativity solutions to Newtonian solutions in the timelike case, and of the full theory to the linearised theory in the null case. It is a pleasure to dedicate this paper to Josh Goldber…
The present status of the shear-free fluid conjecture in general relativity is discussed: a review is given of recent partial proofs, a new and complete proof is given for the case of a linear equation of state, including a non-zero cosmological constant, and a number of useful results are presented which might help in proving the conjecture for a general equation of state.
We prove here a long standing conjecture in general relativity, that if barotropic perfect fluid is moving in a shear free way, then it must be either expansion free or rotation free.
In this paper we investigate a class of solutions of Einstein equations for the plane-symmetric perfect fluid case with shear and vanishing acceleration. If these solutions have shear, they must necessarily be non-static. We examine the integrable cases of the field equations systematically. Among the cases with shear we find three classes of solutions.
Gravitational effect of "magnetic type" -- those having a curl-like character over large spheres -- are investigated, for isolated systems. The Bondi-Sachs-Newman-Penrose formalism clarifies a number of points, especially related to radiation memory. It is shown that the "memory tensor" is equivalent to the change in Bondi shear, from before to after the emission of radiation. This means that if magnetic radiation memory is present, at least one of the intervals bracketing the radiation must have non-zero magnetic shear but vanishing radiation. Such intervals, called here CPMS regimes, are sho…
We study geometric structures associated with shear-free null geodesic congruences in Minkowski space-time and asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences in asymptotically flat space-times. We show how in both the flat and asymptotically flat settings, complexified future null infinity acts as a "holographic screen," interpolating between two dual descriptions of the null geodesic congruence. One description constructs a complex null geodesic congruence in a complex space-time whose source is a complex world-line; a virtual source as viewed from the holographic screen. This complex nu…
The residual gauge freedom within the null quasi-spherical coordinate condition is studied, for spacetimes admitting an expanding, shear-free null foliation. The freedom consists of a boost and rotation at each coordinate sphere, corresponding to a specification of inertial frame at each sphere. Explicit formulae involving arbitrary functions of two variables are obtained for the accelerated Minkowski, Schwarzschild, and Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. These examples will be useful as test metrics in numerical relativity.
In this thesis, we apply the AdS/CFT correspondence to space-times associated with extensions of General Relativity. We are particularly interested in calculating the transport coefficient, the shear viscosity, associated with the effective field theory whose dual is a black hole space-time in bulk. The correspondence also allows us to compute thermodynamic quantities, in which the entropy, plays a prominent role when the ratio between the shear viscosity-to-entropy density is taken. This ratio is conjectured to have a minimum value of $1/4π$, in natural units. The main results presented in th…
Recently it was shown that if the matter congruence of a general relativistic perfect fluid flow in an almost FLRW universe is shear-free, then it must be either expansion or rotation-free. Here we generalize this result for a general f(R) theory of gravity and show there exist scenarios where this result can be avoided. This suggests that there are situations where linearized forth-order gravity shares properties with Newtonian theory not valid in General Relativity.
In this paper, we have searched the existence of the similarity solution for plane symmetric inhomogeneous cosmological models in general relativity. The matter source consists of perfect fluid with proportionality relation between expansion scalar and shear scalar. The isovector fields of Einstein's field equation for the models under consideration are derived. A new class of exact solutions of Einstein's field equation have been obtained for inhomogeneous space-time. The physical behaviors and geometric aspects of the derived models have been discussed in detail.

In this work, we revisit the shear-free conjecture of general relativity and show the violation of the well-known shear-free condition for perfect-fluid spacetimes. It had been shown in previous investigations that, in the general relativistic framework, the matter congruences of shear-free perfect fluid spacetimes should be either expansion-free or rotation-free. Our current investigation, however, indicates that a universe dominated by a Chaplygin gas can allow a simultaneous expansion and rotation of the fluid provided that certain non-trivial conditions, which we derive and describe below,…
In this paper we consider conformally flat perturbations on the Friedmann Lemaitre Robertson Walker (FLRW) spacetime containing a general matter field. Working with the linearised field equations, we unearth some important geometrical properties of matter shear and vorticity and how they interact with the thermodynamical quantities in the absence of any free gravity powered by the Weyl curvature. As there are hardly any physically realistic rotating exact conformally flat solutions in general relativity, these covariant and gauge invariant results bring out transparently the role of vorticity …
A new definition of coarse-grained quantities describing the dust flow in General Relativity is proposed. It assigns the coarse--grained expansion, shear and vorticity to finite-size comoving domains of fluid in a covariant, coordinate-independent manner. The coarse--grained quantities are all quasi-local functionals, depending only on the geometry of the boundary of the considered domain. They can be thought of as relativistic generalizations of simple volume averages of local quantities in a flat space. The procedure is based on the isometric embedding theorem for S^2 surfaces and thus requi…
New equations are derived which describe the evolution in curved spacetime of null geodesics with non-zero (complex) shear $σ$ and twist $ω$ rates resembling Grishchuk's squeezed states evolution equations from inflationary cosmology. A ``squeeze" angle $ϕ$ (obtained from the direction of the major axis of the elliptical cross section of the congruence and the direction of the shear rate), an ellipse axis ratio parameter $w$ and a rotation angle $v$ are the primary variables. Interpreting $ϕ$ as a polar angle and $w$ as a radial distance, we obtain a mapping to points on the upper sheet, $H_{2…
Locally rotationally symmetric (L.R.S.) Bianchi type II stiff fluid cosmological model is investigated. To get the deterministic model of the universe, we have assumed a condition $A=B^{m}$ between metric potentials $A,~B$ where $n$ is the constant. It is shown that the vacuum energy density $Λ$ is positive and proportional to $\frac{1}{t^{2}}$. The values of deceleration parameter $q$, matter-energy density $Ω_{m}$ and dark-energy density $Ω_Λ$ are found to be in good agreement with the values obtain from 5-years WMAP observations. the predicted value of the jerk parameter agrees with the SNL…
We present results about the effect of the use of a stiffer equation of state, namely the ideal-fluid $Γ=2.75$ ones, on the dynamical bar-mode instability in rapidly rotating polytropic models of neutron stars in full General Relativity. We determine the change on the critical value of the instability parameter $β$ for the emergence of the instability when the adiabatic index $Γ$ is changed from 2 to 2.75 in order to mimic the behavior of a realistic equation of state. In particular, we show that the threshold for the onset of the bar-mode instability is reduced by this change in the stiffness…
We generalise the equations governing relativistic fluid dynamics given by Ehlers and Ellis for general relativity, and by Maartens and Taylor for quadratic theories, to generalised $f(R)$ theories of gravity. In view of the usefulness of this alternative framework to general relativity, its generalisation can be of potential importance for deriving analogous results to those obtained in general relativity. We generalise, as an example, the results of Maartens and Taylor to show that within the framework of general $f(R)$ theories, a perfect fluid spacetime with vanishing vorticity, shear and …
In this paper, we have studied non stationary dust spherically symmetric spacetime, in general covariant theory ($U(1)$ extension) of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the minimally coupling and non-minimum coupling with matter, in the post-newtonian approximation (PPN) in the infrared limit. The Newtonian prepotential $φ$ was assumed null. The aim of this work is to know if we can have the same spacetime, as we know in the General Relativity Theory (GRT), in Hořava-Lifshitz Theory (HLT) in this limit. We have shown that there is not an analogy of the dust solution in HLT with the minimally cou…
Considering the growing interest of the astrophysicist community in the study of dissipative fluids with the aim of getting a more realistic description of the universe, we present in this paper a physical analysis of the energy-momentum tensor of a viscous fluid with heat flux. We introduce the general form of this tensor and, using the approximation of small velocity gradients, we relate the stresses of the fluid with the viscosity coefficients, the shear tensor and the expansion factor. Exploiting these relations, we can write the stresses in terms of the extrinsic curvature of the normal s…
We show that for asymptotically vanishing Maxwell fields in Minkowski space with non-vanishing total charge, one can find a unique geometric structure, a null direction field, at null infinity. From this structure a unique complex analytic world-line in complex Minkowski space that can be found and then identified as the complex center of charge. By ''sitting'' - in an imaginary sense, on this world-line both the (intrinsic) electric and magnetic dipole moments vanish. The (intrinsic) magnetic dipole moment is (in some sense) obtained from the `distance' the complex the world line is from the …
We study the evolution of shear-free spherically symmetric charged fluids in general relativity. We find a new parametric class of solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell system of field equations. Our charged results are a generalisation of earlier treatments for neutral relativistic fluids. We regain the first integrals found previously for uncharged matter as a special case. In addition an explicit first integral is found which is necessarily charged.
Shear-free or asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences possess a large number of fascinating geometric properties and to be closely related, in the context of general relativity, to a variety of physically significant affects. It is the purpose of this paper to develop these issues and find applications in GR. The applications center around the problem of extracting interior physical properties of an asymptotically flat space-time directly from the asymptotic gravitational (and Maxwell) field itself in analogy with the determination of total charge by an integral over the Maxwell fi…
We discuss the Hamiltonian dynamics of general relativity with real connection variables on a null foliation, and use the Newman-Penrose formalism to shed light on the geometric meaning of the various constraints. We identify the equivalent of Sachs' constraint-free initial data as projections of connection components related to null rotations, i.e. the translational part of the ISO(2) group stabilising the internal null direction soldered to the hypersurface. A pair of second-class constraints reduces these connection components to the shear of a null geodesic congruence, thus establishing eq…
A dynamical analysis of an effective homogeneous and irrotational Weyssenhoff fluid in general relativity is performed using the 1+3 covariant approach that enables the dynamics of the fluid to be determined without assuming any particular form for the space-time metric. The spin contributions to the field equations produce a bounce that averts an initial singularity, provided that the spin density exceeds the rate of shear. At later times, when the spin contribution can be neglected, a Weyssenhoff fluid reduces to a standard cosmological fluid in general relativity. Numerical solutions for th…
Spatially homogeneous but totally anisotropic and non-flat Bianchi type II cosmological model has been studied in general relativity in the presence of two minimally interacting fluids; a perfect fluid as the matter fluid and a hypothetical anisotropic fluid as the dark energy fluid. The Einstein's field equations have been solved by applying two kinematical ansätze: we have assumed the variation law for the mean Hubble parameter that yields a constant value of deceleration parameter, and one of the components of the shear tensor has been considered proportional to the mean Hubble parameter. W…
Self-similarity in general relativity is briefly reviewed and the differences between self-similarity of the first kind and generalized self-similarity are discussed. The covariant notion of a kinematic self-similarity in the context of relativistic fluid mechanics is defined. Various mathematical and physical properties of spacetimes admitting a kinematic self-similarity are discussed. The governing equations for perfect fluid cosmological models are introduced and a set of integrability conditions for the existence of a proper kinematic self-similarity in these models is derived. Exact solut…
