In this paper, we prove a discrete version of the Bethe-Sommerfeld conjecture. Namely, we show that the spectra of multi-dimensional discrete periodic Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ lattice with sufficiently small potentials contain at most two intervals. Moreover, the spectrum is a single interval, provided one of the periods is odd, and can have a gap whenever all periods are even.

We study discrete Schrödinger operators on the graphs corresponding to the triangular lattice, the hexagonal lattice, and the square lattice with next-nearest neighbor interactions. For each of these lattice geometries, we analyze the behavior of small periodic potentials. In contrast to the usual quantum systems which have at most a finite number of open spectral gaps if they are periodic in more than one direction, periodic quantum graphs may have gaps arbitrarily high in the spectrum. We show that the spectrum of a discrete two-dimensional periodic Schrödinger operator on a square lattice with a sufficiently small potential is an interval, provided the period is odd in at least one dimension. In general, we show that the spectrum may consist of at most two intervals and that a gap may only open at energy zero. This sharpens several results of Krüger and may be thought of as a discrete version of the Bethe--Sommerfeld conjecture. We also describe an application to the study of two-dimensional almost-periodic operators.
We provide a conjecture for the following two quantities related with the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ isotropic Heisenberg model defined over rings of even lengths: (i) the number of the solutions to the Bethe ansatz equations which correspond to non-zero Bethe vectors; (ii) the number of physical singular solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations in the sense of Nepomechie-Wang. We conjecture a new way to construct eigenstates of integrable XXX quantum spin chains with SU(N) symmetry. The states are built by repeatedly acting on the vacuum with a single operator Bgood(u) evaluated at the Bethe roots. Our proposal serves as a compact alternative to the usual nested algebraic Bethe ansatz. Furthermore, the roots of this operator give the separated variables of the model, explicitly generalizing Sklyanin's approach to the SU(N) case. Zamolodchikov periodicity is a property of $T$- and $Y$-systems, arising in the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Zamolodchikov integrability was recently considered as its affine analog in our joint work with P. Pylyavskyy. Here we prove periodicity and integrability for similar discrete dynamical systems based on the cube recurrence, also known as the discrete BKP equation. The periodicity part was conjectured by Henriques in 2007.
