One-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations are derived to describe the axial effective dynamics of cigar-shaped atomic repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates trapped with anharmonic transverse potentials. The accuracy of these equations in the perturbative, Thomas-Fermi, and crossover regimes were verified numerically by comparing the ground-state profiles, transverse chemical potentials and oscillation patterns with those results obtained for the full three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This procedure allows us to derive different patterns of 1D nonlinear models by the control of the transverse confinement.
We present a method to transport Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in anharmonic traps and in the presence of atom-atom interactions in short times without residual excitation. Using a combination of a variational approach and inverse engineering methods, we derive a set of Ermakov-like equations that take into account the coupling between the center of mass motion and the breathing mode. By an appropriate inverse engineering strategy of those equations, we then design the trap trajectory to achieve the desired boundary conditions. Numerical examples for cubic or quartic anharmonicities are pro…
We study the impact of collisionally inhomogeneous binary and three body interaction on Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of a dilute gas in a bichromatic optical lattice. We observe that the localized matter wave density which decreases after the introduction of repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction can be sustained by the addition of constant attractive binary strength in equal amounts. If the balance between repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction and constant attractive interaction is disturbed, the condensates collapse. Reversal of sign of interaction ensures th…
We study long-time dynamics of a bosonic system after suddenly switching on repulsive delta-like interactions. As initial states, we consider two experimentally relevant configurations: a rotating BEC and two counter-propagating BECs with opposite momentum, both on a ring. In the first case, the rapidity distribution function for the stationary state is derived analytically and it is given by the distribution obtained for the same quench starting from a BEC, shifted by the momentum of each boson. In the second case, the rapidity distribution function is obtained numerically for generic values …
The dynamics of weakly interacting three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), trapped in external axially symmetric plus anharmonic distortion potential are studied. Within a variational approach and time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the coupled condensate width equations are derived. By modulating anharmonic distortion of the trapping potential, nonlinear features are studied numerically and illustrated analytically, such as mode coupling of oscillation modes, and resonances. Furthermore, the stability of attractive interaction BEC in both repulsive and attractive anharmonic …
In this paper we study dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in presence of an anharmonic external potential. The theoretical model is based on the Muñoz-Mateo and Delgado (MMD) equation that describes cigar-shaped BECs with repulsive interatomic interactions. Since MMD equation presents a nonpolynomial form, the soliton-sound recombination cannot display the same pattern presented in the cubic model. We perform numerical simulations to compare both cases.
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential undergoing a dynamical transition from the regime of Josephson oscillations to the regime of self-trapping. We analyze the statistical properties of the ground state (or the highest excited state) of the Hamiltonian in these two regimes for attractive (repulsive) interactions. We demonstrate that it is impossible to describe the transition within the mean-field theory. In contrast, the transition proceeds through a strongly correlated delocalized state, with large quantum fluctuations, and spontaneous breaking of the symmetry.
Numerically we investigate the ground state of effective one-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi coupled two pseudo-spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) under the effect of harmonic traps. For both signs of the interaction, density profiles of SO and Rabi coupled BECs in harmonic potentials, which simulate a real experimental situation are obtained. The harmonic trap causes a strong reduction of the multi-peak nature of the condensate and it increases its density. For repulsive interactions, the increase of SO coupling results in an uncompressed less dense condensate and with increased mul…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics of modulation instability (MI) in two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The analysis is performed for equal densities of pseudo-spin components. Different combination of the signs of intra- and inter-component interaction strengths are considered, with a particular emphasize on repulsive interactions. We observe that the unstable modulation builds from originally miscible condensates, depending on the combination of the signs of the intra- and inter-component interaction strengths. The repulsive intra- and inter-component…
We numerically study the dynamics of quantized vortices in two-dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped by a box potential. For one-component BECs in a box potential, it is known that quantized vortices form Onsager vortices, which are clusters of same-sign vortices. We confirm that the vortices of the two components spatially separate from each other-even for miscible two-component BECs-suppressing the formation of Onsager vortices. This phenomenon is caused by the repulsive interaction between vortices belonging to different components, hence, suggesting a new possi…
We study matter-wave bright solitons in spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with attractive interatomic interactions. We use a multiscale expansion method to identify solution families for chemical potentials in the semi-infinite gap of the linear energy spectrum. Depending on the linear and spin-orbit coupling strengths, the solitons may resemble either standard bright nonlinear Schrödinger solitons or exhibit a modulated density profile, reminiscent of the stripe phase of SO-coupled repulsive BECs. Our numerical results are in excellent agreement with our analytical find…
We present the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) possessing the electric dipole and the electric quadrupole moments in a non-integral form. These equations are coupled with the Maxwell equations. The model under consideration includes the dipole-dipole, the dipole-quadrupole, and the quadrupole-quadrupole interactions in terms of the electric field created by the dipoles and quadrupoles. We apply this model to obtain the Bogoliubov spectrum for three dimensional BECs with a repulsive short-range interaction. We obtain an extra term in the Bogoliubov spectrum in com…
New efficient and accurate numerical methods are proposed to compute ground states and dynamics of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) described by a three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with a dipolar interaction potential. Due to the high singularity in the dipolar interaction potential, it brings significant difficulties in mathematical analysis and numerical simulations of dipolar BECs. In this paper, by decoupling the two-body dipolar interaction potential into short-range (or local) and long-range interactions (or repulsive and attractive interactions), the GPE for…
In this paper, we investigate the impact of higher-order interactions on the modulational instability (MI) of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) immersed in an optical lattice potential. We derive the new variational equations for the time evolution of amplitude, phase of modulational perturbation, and effective potential for the system. Through effective potential techniques, we find that high density attractive and repulsive BECs exhibit new character with direct impact over the MI phenomenon. Results of intensive numerical investigations are presented and their convergence with the above semi…
We review the recent developments which had taken place in the domain of quasi one dimensional BECs from the viewpoint of integrability. To start with, we consider the dynamics of scalar BECs in a time independent harmonic trap and observe that the scattering length (SL) can be suitably manipulated either to compress the bright solitons to attain peak matter wave density without causing their explosion or to broaden the width of the condensates without diluting them. When the harmonic trap frequency becomes time dependent, we notice that one can stabilize the condensates in the confining domai…
We study normal modes propagating on top of the stable uniform background in arrays of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) droplets trapped in a deep optical lattice. Both the on-site mean-field dynamics of the droplets and their displacement due to the repulsive dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs) are taken into account. Dispersion relations for two modes, \textit{viz}., high- and low- frequency counterparts of optical and acoustic phonon modes in condensed matter, are derived analytically and verified by direct simulations, for both cases of the repulsive and attractive contact interactions…
We investigate the low energy excitations of a dilute atomic Bose gas confined in a anharmonic trap interacting with repulsive forces. The dispersion law of both surface and compression modes are derived and analyzed for large numbers of atoms in the trap, which show two branches of excitation and appear a two critical value. For a upper limit, BEC can be unstable with respect to some specific collective excitation, while for the lower limit, the frequency of collective excitation under anharmonic influence can be effectively lower than that without anharmonicity. Our work reveals the key role…
We develop the theory of anharmonic confinement-induced resonances (ACIR). These are caused by anharmonic excitation of the transverse motion of the center of mass (COM) of two bound atoms in a waveguide. As the transverse confinement becomes anisotropic, we find that the COM resonant solutions split for a quasi-1D system, in agreement with recent experiments. This is not found in harmonic confinement theories. A new resonance appears for repulsive couplings ($a_{3D}>0$) for a quasi-2D system, which is also not seen with harmonic confinement. After inclusion of anharmonic energy corrections wi…
Traditional quantum hydrodynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is restricted by the continuity and Euler equations. It corresponds to the well-known Gross-Pitaevskii equation. However, the quantum Bohm potential, which is a part of the momentum flux, has a nontrivial part with can evolve under the quantum fluctuations. To cover this phenomenon in terms of hydrodynamic methods we need to derive equations for the momentum flux, and the third rank tensor. In all equations we consider the main contribution of the short-range interaction (SRI) in the first order by the interaction radius. De…
We elaborate a method for the creation of two- and one-dimensional (2D and 1D) self-trapped modes in binary spin-orbit (SO)-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with the contact repulsive interaction, whose local strength grows fast enough from the center to periphery. In particular, an exact semi-vortex (SV) solution is found for the anti-Gaussian radial-modulation profile. The exact modes are included in the numerically produced family of SV solitons. Other families, in the form of mixed modes(MMs), as well as excited state of SVs and MMs, are produced too. While the excited states are u…
The Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) plays an important role in the description of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at the mean-field level. The GPE belongs to the class of non-linear Schrödinger equations which are known to feature dynamical instability and collapse for attractive non-linear interactions. We show that the GPE with repulsive non-linear interactions typical for BECs features chaotic wave dynamics. We find positive Lyapunov exponents for BECs expanding in periodic and aperiodic smooth external potentials as well as disorder potentials. Our analysis demonstrates that wave chaos ch…
We predict the existence of stable fundamental and vortical bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions (DDI). The condensate is trapped in the 2D plane with the help of the repulsive contact interactions whose local strength grows $\sim r^{4}$ from the center to periphery, while dipoles are oriented perpendicular to the self-trapping plane. The confinement in the perpendicular direction is provided by the usual harmonic-oscillator potential. The objective is to extend the recently induced concept of the self-trapping of bright solitons…
We study fundamental and vortical solitons in disk-morphed Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) subject to strong confinement along the axial direction. Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), we proceed to an effective 2D nonpolynomial Schroeodinger equation (NPSE) derived by means of the integration over the axial coordinate. Results produced by the latter equation are in very good agreement with those obtained from the full 3D GPE, including cases when the formal 2D equation with the cubic nonlinearity is unreliable. The 2D NPSE is used to predict density profi…
We study the formation of stable bright solitons in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) spin-orbit- (SO-) and Rabi-coupled two pseudospinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of 164 Dy atoms in the presence of repulsive contact interactions. As a result of the combined attraction-repulsion effect of both interactions and the addition of SO and Rabi couplings, two kinds of ground states in the form of self-trapped bright solitons can be formed, a plane-wave soliton (PWS) and a stripe soliton (SS). These quasi-1D solitons cannot exist in a condensate with purely repulsive contact interactions…
Density-wave patterns in (quasi-) discrete media with local interactions are known to be unstable. We demonstrate that \emph{stable} double- and triple- period patterns (DPPs and TPPs), with respect to the period of the underlying lattice, exist in media with nonlocal nonlinearity. This is shown in detail for dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), loaded into a deep one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice (OL), by means of analytical and numerical methods in the tight-binding limit. The patterns featuring multiple periodicities are generated by the modulational instability of the continuous-wa…
Starting from the standard three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and using a variational approximation, we derive an effective one-dimensional nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (1D-NPSE) governing the axial dynamics of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) under the action of a singular but physically relevant funnel-shaped transverse trap, i.e., an attractive 2D potential $\sim-1/r$ (where $r$ is the radial coordinate in the transverse plane), in combination with the repulsive self-interaction. Wave functions of the trapped BEC are regular, in spite of the potential's sing…
We consider a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with nonlinear repulsive interactions and linear spin-orbit (SO) and Zeeman-splitting couplings. In the presence of the trapping harmonic-oscillator (HO) potential, we report the existence of even, odd, and asymmetric spatial modes. They feature alternating domains with opposite directions of the pseudo-spin, i.e., anti-ferromagnetic structures, which is explained by the interplay of the linear couplings, HO confinement, and repulsive self-interaction. The number of the domains is determined by the strength of the SO coupling. The modes are c…
We study possibilities to suppress the transverse modulational instability (MI) of dark-soliton stripes in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and self-defocusing bulk optical waveguides by means of quasi-1D structures. Adding an external repulsive barrier potential (which can be induced in BEC by a laser sheet, or by an embedded plate in optics), we demonstrate that it is possible to reduce the MI wavenumber band, and even render the dark-soliton stripe completely stable. Using this method, we demonstrate the control of the number of vortex pairs nucleated by each spatial pe…
We theoretically explore the possibility of stabilizing the trapless polariton Bose-Einstein condensates (pBECs). Exploiting the variational method, we solve the associated nonlinear, complex Gross-Pitaevskii (cGP) equation and derive the equation of motion for the amplitude and width of the condensate. These variational results described by ordinary differential equations are rewritten to perform a linear stability analysis to generate a stability window in the repulsive domain. A set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations obtained through variational approach are then solved by…
With use of the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation with strong repulsive cubic nonlinearity, dynamics of multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with a harmonic trap in 2 dimensions is investigated beyond the Thomas-Fermi regime. In the case when each component has a single vortex, we obtain an effective nonlinear dynamics for vortex cores (particles). The particles here acquire the inertia, in marked contrast to the standard theory of point vortices widely known in the usual hydrodynamics. The effective dynamics is equivalent to that of charged particles under a s…
We report results of systematic simulations of the dynamics of solitons in the framework of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), which includes the harmonic-oscillator (HO) potential and a random potential. The equation models experimentally relevant spatially disordered settings in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and nonlinear optics. First, the generation of soliton arrays from a broad initial quasi-uniform state by the modulational instability (MI) is considered, following a sudden switch of the nonlinearity from repulsive to attractive. Then, we study oscillations of…
We consider a two-dimensional (2D) counterpart of the experiment that led to the creation of quasi-1D bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) [Nature 417, 150--153 (2002)]. We start by identifying the ground state of the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation for repulsive interactions, with a harmonic-oscillator (HO) trap, and with or without an optical lattice (OL). Subsequently, we switch the sign of the interaction to induce interatomic attraction and monitor the ensuing dynamics. Regions of the stable self-trapping and catastrophic collapse of 2D fundamental solitons are identified in t…
We report results of a systematic analysis of matter-wave gap solitons (GSs) in three-dimensional self-repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded into a combination of a cigar-shaped trap and axial optical-lattice (OL) potential. Basic cases of the strong, intermediate, and weak radial (transverse) confinement are considered, as well as settings with shallow and deep OL potentials. Only in the case of the shallow lattice combined with tight radial confinement, which actually has little relevance to realistic experimental conditions, does the usual one-dimensional (1D) cubic Gross-Pitaev…
Coherent states play an important role in quantum mechanics because of their unique properties under time evolution. Here we explore this concept for one-dimensional repulsive nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which describe weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates or light propagation in a nonlinear medium. It is shown that the dynamics of phase-space translations of the ground state of a harmonic potential is quite simple: the centre follows a classical trajectory whereas its shape does not vary in time. The parabolic potential is the only one that satisfies this property. We study the ti…
We investigate the equilibrium properties of a quasi-two-dimensional degenerate boson-fermion mixture (DBFM) with a bosonic vortex-antivortex superposed state (VAVSS) using a quantum-hydrodynamic model. We show that, depending on the choice of parameters, the DBFM with a VAVSS can exhibit rich phase structures. For repulsive boson-fermion (BF) interaction, the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) may constitute a petal-shaped "core" inside the honeycomb-like fermionic component, or a ring-shaped joint "shell" around the onion-like fermionic cloud, or multiple segregated "islands" embedded in the dis…
