In this paper we consider a two component scalar field theory, with noncommutativity in its conjugate momentum space. We quantize such a theory in a compact space with the help of dressing transformations and we reveal a significant effect of introducing such noncommutativity as the splitting of the energy levels of each individual mode that constitutes the whole system. We further compute the thermal partition function exactly with predicted deformed dispersion relations from noncommutative theories and compare the results with usual results. It is found that thermodynamic quantities in noncommutative models, irrespective of whether the model is more deformed in infrared/UV region, show deviation from standard results in high temperature region.
We present a path integral formalism for quantising gravity in the form of the spectral action. Our basic principle is to sum over all Dirac operators. The approach is demonstrated on two simple finite noncommutative geometries: the two-point space, and the matrix geometry M_2(C). On the first, the graviton is described by a Higgs field, and on the second, it is described by a gauge field. We start with the partition function and calculate the propagator and Greens functions for the gravitons. The expectation values of distances are evaluated, and we discover that distances shrink with increas…
It is shown that the canonical classical $r$-matrix arising from the Drinfel'd double structure underlying the two-fold centrally extended (2+1) Galilean and Newton-Hooke Lie algebras (with either zero or non-zero cosmological constant $Λ$, respectively) originates as a well-defined non-relativistic contraction of a specific class of canonical $r$-matrices associated with the Drinfel'd double structure of the (2+1) (anti)-de Sitter Lie algebra. The full quantum group structure associated with such (2+1) Galilean and Newton-Hooke Drinfel'd doubles is presented, and the corresponding noncommutat…
Time-space noncommutativity leads to quantisation of time and energy nonconservation when time is conjugate to a compact spatial direction like a circle. In this context energy is conserved only modulo some fixed unit. Such a possibility arises for example in theories with a compact extra dimension with which time does not commute. The above results suggest striking phenomenological consequences in extra dimensional theories and elsewhere. In this paper we develop scattering theory for discrete time translations. It enables the calculation of transition probabilities for energy nonconserving p…
We study quantisation of noncommutative gravity theories in two dimensions (with noncommutativity defined by the Moyal star product). We show that in the case of noncommutative Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity the path integral over gravitational degrees of freedom can be performed exactly even in the presence of a matter field. In the matter sector, we study possible choices of the operators describing quantum fluctuations and define their basic properties (e.g., the Lichnerowicz formula). Then we evaluate two leading terms in the heat kernel expansion, calculate the conformal anomaly and the Polyak…
By invoking the concept of twisted Poincar\' e symmetry of the algebra of functions on a Minkowski space-time, we demonstrate that the noncommutative space-time with the commutation relations $[x_μ,x_ν]=iθ_{μν}$, where $θ_{μν}$ is a {\it constant} real antisymmetric matrix, can be interpreted in a Lorentz-invariant way. The implications of the twisted Poincaré symmetry on QFT on such a space-time is briefly discussed. The presence of the twisted symmetry gives justification to all the previous treatments within NC QFT using Lorentz invariant quantities and the representations of the usual Poin…
Including loop corrections, black-body radiation in noncommutative space is anisotropic. A direct implication of possible space noncommutativity on the Cosmic Microwave Background map is argued.
In this work we examine noncommutativity of position coordinates in classical symplectic mechanics and its quantisation. In coordinates $\{q^i,p_k\}$ the canonical symplectic two-form is $ω_0=dq^i\wedge dp_i$. It is well known in symplectic mechanics {\bf\cite{Souriau,Abraham,Guillemin}} that the interaction of a charged particle with a magnetic field can be described in a Hamiltonian formalism without a choice of a potential. This is done by means of a modified symplectic two-form $ω=ω_0-e\F$, where $e$ is the charge and the (time-independent) magnetic field $\F$ is closed: $\dif\F=0$. With t…
A general framework of non-perturbative quantum field theory on a curved background is presented. A quantum field theory is in this setting characterised by an embedding of a space of field configurations into a Hilbert space over $\mathbb{R}^\infty$. This embedding, which is only local up to a scale that we interpret as the Planck scale, coincides in the local and flat limit with the plane wave expansion known from canonical quantisation. We identify a universal Bott-Dirac operator acting in the Hilbert space over $\mathbb{R}^\infty$ and show that it gives rise to the free Hamiltonian both in…
We consider a complex singlet scalar in the spectral action approach to the standard model. It is shown that there is a range of initial values at the unification scale which is able to produce Higgs and top quark masses at low energies. The stability of the vacuum and the deviation of gauge couplings from experimental values are discussed and compared at the two-loop level with a real scalar singlet and the pure standard model.
The concept of twisted Poincaré symmetry, as well as some implications, are reviewed. The spin-statistics relation and the nonlocality of NC QFT are discussed in the light of this quantum symmetry. The possibility of a twisted symmetry principle for quantum field and gauge theories formulated on a noncommutative space-time is also explored.
The following two loosely connected sets of topics are reviewed in these lecture notes: 1) Gauge invariance, its treatment in field theories and its implications for internal symmetries and edge states such as those in the quantum Hall effect. 2) Quantisation on multiply connected spaces and a topological proof the spin-statistics theorem which avoids quantum field theory and relativity. Under 1), after explaining the meaning of gauge invariance and the theory of constraints, we discuss boundary conditions on gauge transformations and the definition of internal symmetries in gauge field theori…
We study physical implications of the doubling of the algebra, an essential element in the construction of the noncommutative spectral geometry model, proposed by Connes and his collaborators as offering a geometric explanation for the standard model of strong and electroweak interactions. Linking the algebra doubling to the deformed Hopf algebra, we build Bogogliubov transformations and show the emergence of neutrino mixing.
This is my PhD thesis. In this thesis we study the gauge theories on noncommutative Moyal space. We find new static solitons and instantons in terms of the so called generalized Bose operators. Generalized Bose operators are constructed to describe reducible representation of the oscillator algebra. They create/annihilate $k$-quanta, $k$ being a positive integer. We start with giving an alternative description to the already found static magnetic flux tube solutions of the noncommutative gauge theories in terms of generalized Bose operators. The Nielsen-Olesen vortex solutions found in terms o…
The black-body radiation is considered in a theory with noncommutative electromagnetic fields; that is noncommutativity is introduced in field space, rather than in real space. A direct implication of the result on Cosmic Microwave Background map is argued.
We consider astrophysical objects such as main-sequence stars, white-dwarfs and neutron stars in a noncommutative context. Noncommutativity is implemented via a deformed dispersion relation $E^{2}=p^{2}c^{2}(1+λE)^{2}+m^{2}c^{4}$ from which we obtain noncommutative corrections to the pressure, particle number and energy densities for radiation and for a degenerate fermion gas. The main implications of noncommutativity for the considered astrophysical objects are examined and discussed.
We briefly discuss some possible cosmological implications of noncommutative geometry. While the noncommutativity we consider does not affect gravity, it can play an important role in the dynamics of other fields that are present in the early universe. We point out the possibility that noncommutativity may cause inflation induced fluctuations to become non-gaussian and anisotropic, and may modify the short distance dispersion relations.
We incorporate the Seiberg-Witten map of noncommutative theory in the classical London theory of type-I superconductivity when an external magnetic field is applied. After defining the noncommutative Maxwell potentials, we derive the London equation for the supercurrent as a function of the noncommutative parameter, up to second order in gauge fields expansion. Keeping track of the effects of noncommutative gauge fields, we argue that noncommutative magnetic field effects can be cast in the permeability of the superconductor as an emergent property of the material, measurable in possible not-s…
We discuss some possible implications of a two-dimensional toy model for black hole evaporation in noncommutative field theory. While the noncommutativity we consider does not affect gravity, it can play an important role in the dynamics of massless and Hermitian scalar fields in the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. We find that noncommutativity will affect the flux of outgoing particles and the nature of its UV/IR divergences. Moreover, we show that the noncommutative interaction does not affect Leahy's and Unruh's interpretation of thermal ingoing and outgoing fluxes in the black…
Based on the construction of the 4-dim noncommutative gravity model described in our previous work, first, a more extended description of the covariant noncommutative space (fuzzy 4-dim de Sitter space), which accommodates the gravity model, is presented and then the corresponding field equations, which are obtained after variation of the previously proposed action, are extracted. Also, a spontaneous breaking of the initial symmetry is performed, this time induced by the introduction of an auxiliary scalar field, and its implications in the reduced theory, which is produced after considering t…
We study noncommutative field theories, which are inherently nonlocal, using a Poincaré-invariant regularisation scheme which yields an effective, nonlocal theory for energies below a cut-off scale. After discussing the general features and the peculiar advantages of this regularisation scheme for theories defined in noncommutative spaces, we focus our attention onto the particular case when the noncommutativity parameter is inversely proportional to the square of the cut-off, via a dimensionless parameter $η$. We work out the perturbative corrections at one-loop order for a scalar theory with…
It has been pointed out that different choices of momenta can be associated to the same noncommutative spacetime model. The question of whether these momentum spaces, related by diffeomorphisms, produce the same physical predictions is still debated. In this work, we focus our attention on a few different momentum spaces that can be associated to the Galilean Snyder noncommutative spacetime model and show that they produce different predictions for the energy spectrum of the harmonic oscillator.
A deformed Schwarzschild solution in noncommutative gauge theory of gravitation is obtained. The gauge potentials (tetrad fields) are determined up to the second order in the noncommutativity parameters $Θ^{μν}$. A deformed real metric is defined and its components are obtained. The noncommutativity correction to the red shift test of General Relativity is calculated and it is concluded that the correction is too small to have observable effects. Implications of such a deformed Schwarzschild metric are also mentioned.
We propose an alternative interpretation for the meaning of noncommutativity of the string-inspired field theories and quantum mechanics. Arguments are presented to show that the noncommutativity generated in the stringy context should be assumed to be only between the particle coordinate observables, and not of the spacetime coordinates. Some implications of this fact for noncomutative field theories and quantum mechanics are discussed. In particular, a consistent interpretation is given for the wavefunction in quantum mechanics. An analysis of the noncommutative theories in the Schrödinger f…
The noncommutativity of the space-time had important implications for the very early Universe, when its size was of the order of the Planck length. An important implication of this effect is the deformation of the standard dispersion relation of special relativity. Moreover, in the Planck regime gravity itself must be described by a quantum theory. We consider the implications of the modified dispersion relations for a photon gas, filling the early Universe, in the framework of Loop Quantum Cosmology, a theoretical approach to quantum gravity. We consider three types of deformations of the dis…
Photon-neutrino interactions arise quite naturally in noncommutative field theories. Such couplings are absent in ordinary field theory and imply experimental lower bounds on the energy scale Lambda_NC ~ 1/|theta|^2 of noncommutativity. Using non-perturbative methods and a Seiberg-Witten map based covariant approach to noncommutative gauge theory, we obtain theta-exact expressions for the interactions, thereby eliminating previous restrictions to low-energy phenomena. We discuss implications for plasmon decay, neutrino charge radii, big bang nucleosynthesis and ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. Ou…
We study the time dependent transitions of quantum forced harmonic oscillator (QFHO) in noncommutative $\mathds{R}^{1,1}$ perturbatively to linear order in the noncommutativity $θ$. We show that the Poisson distribution gets modified, and that the vacuum state evolves into a "squeezed" state rather than a coherent state. The time evolutions of uncertainties in position and momentum in vacuum are also studied and imply interesting consequences for modeling nonlinear phenomena in quantum optics.
We review a gravitational model based on noncommutative geometry and the spectral action principle. The space-time geometry is described by the tensor product of a four-dimensional Riemanian manifold by a discrete noncommutative space consisting of only two points. With a specific choice of the finite dimensional involutive algebra, the noncommutative spectral action leads to the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions minimally coupled to Einstein and Weyl gravity. We present the main mathematical ingredients of this model and discuss their physical implications. We argue that t…
We consider the noncommutative space $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$, a deformation of the algebra of functions on $\mathbb{R}^3$ which yields a foliation of $\mathbb{R}^3$ into fuzzy spheres. We first review the construction of a natural matrix basis adapted to $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$. We thus consider the problem of defining a new Laplacian operator for the deformed algebra. We propose an operator which is not of Jacobi type. The implication for field theory of the new Laplacian is briefly discussed.
There are strong restrictions on the possible representations and in general on the matter content of gauge theories formulated on noncommutative Moyal spaces, termed as noncommutative gauge theory no-go theorem. According to the no-go theorem \cite{no-go}, matter fields in the noncommutative U(1) gauge theory can only have $\pm 1$ or zero charges and for a generic noncommutative $\prod_{i=1}^n U(N_i)$ gauge theory matter fields can be charged under at most two of the $U(N_i)$ gauge group factors. On the other hand, it has been argued in the literature that, since a noncommutative U(N) gauge t…
The Leibniz rule for derivations is invariant under cyclic permutations of co-multiples within the arguments of derivations. We explore the implications of this principle: in effect, we construct a class of noncommutative bundles in which the sheaves of algebras of walks along a tesselated affine manifold form the base, whereas the fibres are free associative algebras or, at a later stage, such algebras quotients over the linear relation of equivalence under cyclic shifts. The calculus of variations is developed on the infinite jet spaces over such noncommutative bundles. In the frames of such…
Owing to the extreme smallness of any noncommutative scale that may exist in nature, both in the spatial and momentum sector of the quantum phase-space, a credible possibility of their detection lies in the present day gravitational wave detector set-ups, which effectively detects the relative length-scale variations ${\cal{O}}\left[10^{-23} \right]$. With this motivation, we have considered how a free particle and harmonic oscillator in a quantum domain will respond to linearly and circularly polarized gravitational waves if the given phase-space has a noncommutative structure. The results sh…
Our main focus is to explore different models in noncommutative spaces in higher dimensions. We provide a procedure to relate a three dimensional q-deformed oscillator algebra to the corresponding algebra satisfied by canonical variables describing non-commutative spaces. The representations for the corresponding operators obey algebras whose uncertainty relations lead to minimal length, areas and volumes in phase space, which are in principle natural candidates of many different approaches of quantum gravity. We study some explicit models on these types of noncommutative spaces, first by util…
Models of particle physics with Noncommutative Geometry (NCG) generally suffer from a manifestly non-Wilsonian coupling of infrared and ultraviolet degrees of freedom known as the "IR/UV Problem" which would tend to compromise their phenomenological relevance. In this Letter we explicitly show how one may remedy this by coupling NCG to gravity. In the simplest scenario the Lagrangian gets multiplied by a nonconstant background metric; in $ϕ-4$ theory the theorem that $\int d^4 x ϕ\star ϕ= \int d^4 x ϕ^2$ is no longer true and the field propagator gets modified by a factor which depends on both…
The formulation of the no-cloning theorem in the framework of phase-space noncommutative (NC) quantum mechanics (QM) is examined, and its implications for the computation of quantum cloning probabilities and teleportation fidelity are investigated through the Weyl-Wigner formulation of QM. The principles of QM re-edited in terms of a deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebra are shown to provide a covariant formulation for the quantum fidelity, through which the results from the no-cloning theorem for the ordinary QM can be reproduced. Besides exhibiting an explicit correspondence between standard and …
The open string ending on a D-brane with a constant B-field in a pp-wave Ramond-Ramond background is exactly solvable. The theory is controlled by three dimensionful parameters: alpha', the mass parameter (RR background times the lightcone momentum) and the B-field. We quantize the open string theory and determine the full noncommutative structure. In particular, we find a fully noncommutative phase space whose noncommutativity depends on all these parameters. The lightcone Hamiltionian is obtained, and as a consequence of the nontrivial commutation relations of the theory, new features of the…
We study the spectral representation and dispersion relations that follow from some basic assumptions and the reduced spacetime symmetries on noncommutative (NC) space. Kinematic variables involving the NC parameter appear naturally as parametric variables in this analysis. When subtractions are necessary to remove ultraviolet divergences, they are always made at the fixed values of these NC variables. This point is also illustrated by a perturbative analysis of self-energies. Our analysis of the reduced spacetime symmetries suggests a weaker microcausality requirement. Starting from it, we ma…
The influence of higher dimensions in noncommutative field theories is considered. For this purpose, we analyze the bosonic sector of a recently proposed 6 dimensional SU(3) orbifold model for the electroweak interactions. The corresponding noncommutative theory is constructed by means of the Seiberg-Witten map in 6D. We find in the reduced bosonic interactions in 4D theory, couplings which are new with respect to other known 4D noncommutative formulations of the Standard Model using the Seiberg-Witten map. Phenomenological implications due to the noncommutativity of extra dimensions are explo…
A quantum theory of noncommutative fields was recently proposed by Carmona, Cortez, Gamboa and Mendez (hep-th/0301248). The implications of the noncommutativity of the fields, intended as the requirements $[ϕ,ϕ^{+}]=θδ^{3}(x-x^{\prime}), [π,π^{+}]=Bδ^{3}(x-x^{\prime}) $, were analyzed on the basis of an analogy with previous results on the so-called ``noncommutative harmonic oscillator construction". Some departures from Lorentz symmetry turned out to play a key role in the emerging framework. We first consider the same hamiltonian proposed in hep-th/0301248, and we show that the theory can be…
We analyze the effects of noncommutativity in conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) using the $κ$-deformed space-time as a prototype. Upto the first order in the deformation parameter, the symmetry structure of the CQM algebra is preserved but the coupling in a canonical model of the CQM gets deformed. We show that the boundary conditions that ensure a unitary time evolution in the noncommutative CQM can break the scale invariance, leading to a quantum mechanical scaling anomaly. We calculate the scaling dimensions of the two and three point functions in the noncommutative CQM which are shown to b…
We study the implications of a noncommutative geometry of the minisuperspace variables for the FRW universe with a conformally coupled scalar field. The investigation is carried out by means of a comparative study of the universe evolution in four different scenarios: classical commutative, classical noncommutative, quantum commutative, and quantum noncommutative, the last two employing the Bohmian formalism of quantum trajectories. The role of noncommutativity is discussed by drawing a parallel between its realizations in two possible frameworks for physical interpretation: the NC-frame, wher…
We investigate effects of noncommutativity of phase space generated by two scalar fields conformally coupled to curvature in FRW cosmology. We restrict deformation of minisuperspace to noncommutativity between scalar fields and between their canonical conjugate momenta. The investigation is carried out by means of comparative analysis of mathematical properties of time evolution of variables in classical model and wave function of universe in quantum level. We find that impose of noncommutativity causes more ability in tuning time solutions of scalar fields and hence, has important implication…
We examine the leading order noncommutative corrections to the differential and total cross sections for e+ e- --> q q-bar. After averaging over the earth's rotation, the results depend on the latitude for the collider, as well as the direction of the incoming beam. They also depend on scale and direction of the noncommutativity. Using data from LEP, we exclude regions in the parameter space spanned by the noncommutative scale and angle relative to the earth's axis. We also investigate possible implications for phenomenology at the future International Linear Collider.
We analyze some features of the entanglement entropy for an integer quantum Hall state ($ν=1 $) in comparison with ideas from relativistic field theory and noncommutative geometry. The spectrum of the modular operator, for a restricted class of states, is shown to be similar to the case of field theory or a type ${\rm III}_1$ von Neumann algebra. We present arguments that the main part of the dependence of the entanglement entropy on background fields and geometric data such as the spin connection is given by a generalized Chern-Simons form. Implications of this result for bringing together id…
Various properties of a class of braid matrices, presented before, are studied considering $N^2 \times N^2 (N=3,4,...)$ vector representations for two subclasses. For $q=1$ the matrices are nontrivial. Triangularity $(\hat R^2 =I)$ corresponds to polynomial equations for $q$, the solutions ranging from roots of unity to hyperelliptic functions. The algebras of $L-$ operators are studied. As a crucial feature one obtains $2N$ central, group-like, homogenous quadratic functions of $L_{ij}$ constrained to equality among themselves by the $RLL$ equations. They are studied in detail for $N =3$ and …
We revisit Ozawa's uncertainty principle (OUP) in the framework of noncommutative (NC) quantum mechanics. We derive a matrix version of OUP accommodating any NC structure in the phase-space, and compute NC corrections to lowest order for two measurement interactions, namely the Backaction Evading Quadrature Amplifier and Noiseless Quadrature Transducers. These NC corrections alter the nature of the measurement interaction, as a noiseless interaction may acquire noise, and an interaction of independent intervention may become dependent of the object system. However the most striking result is t…
We present a systematic framework for noncommutative (NC) QFT within the new concept of relativistic invariance based on the notion of twisted Poincaré symmetry (with all 10 generators), as proposed in ref. [7]. This allows to formulate and investigate all fundamental issues of relativistic QFT and offers a firm frame for the classification of particles according to the representation theory of the twisted Poincaré symmetry and as a result for the NC versions of CPT and spin-statistics theorems, among others, discussed earlier in the literature. As a further application of this new concept of …
Chandrasekhar made the startling discovery about nine decades back that the mass of compact object white dwarf has a limiting value, once nuclear fusion reactions stop therein. This is the Chandrasekhar mass-limit, which is $\sim1.4M_\odot$ for a non-rotating non-magnetized white dwarf. On approaching this limiting mass, a white dwarf is believed to spark off with an explosion called type Ia supernova, which is considered to be a standard candle. However, observations of several over-luminous, peculiar type Ia supernovae indicate that the Chandrasekhar mass-limit to be significantly larger. By…
We consider Hilbert's sixth problem on the axiomatization of physics starting with a higher degree Heisenberg commutation relation involving the Dirac operator and the Feynman slash of scalar fields. The two sided version of the commutation relation in dimension 4 implies volume quantization and determines a noncommutative space which is a tensor product of continuous and discrete spaces. This noncommutative space predicts the full structure of a unified model of all particle interactions based on Pati-Salam symmetries or, as a special case, the Standard Model. We study implications of this qu…
In this paper we consider the previously proposed generalised space-time and investigate the structure of the field theory upon which it is based. In particular, we derive a SO(D,D) formulation of the bosonic string as a non-linear realisation at lowest levels of the semi-direct product of E11 with the first fundamental representation l1. We give a Hamiltonian formulation of this theory and carry out its quantisation. We argue that the choice of representation of the quantum theory breaks the manifest SO(D,D) symmetry but that the symmetry is manifest in a non-commutative field theory. We disc…
We show that the Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity (VSR) theory [1] can be realized as the part of the Poincaré symmetry preserved on a noncommutative Moyal plane with light-like noncommutativity. Moreover, we show that the three subgroups relevant to the Cohen-Glashow VSR can also be realized in the noncommutative space-time setting. For all these three cases the noncommutativity parameter $θ^{μν}$ should be light-like ($θ^{μν}θ_{μν}=0$). A fixed constant noncommutativity parameter respects the T(2) subgroup of Lorentz, while for the E(2) and SIM(2) cases the form of noncommutativity amon…
We compute holographic entanglement entropy in two strongly coupled nonlocal field theories: the dipole and the noncommutative deformations of SYM theory. We find that entanglement entropy in the dipole theory follows a volume law for regions smaller than the length scale of nonlocality and has a smooth cross-over to an area law for larger regions. In contrast, in the noncommutative theory the entanglement entropy follows a volume law for up to a critical length scale at which a phase transition to an area law occurs. The critical length scale increases as the UV cutoff is raised, which is ind…
This thesis is broadly split into two parts. In the first part, simple state sum models for minimally coupled fermion and scalar fields are constructed on a $1$-manifold. The models are independent of the triangulation and give the same result as the continuum partition functions evaluated using zeta-function regularisation. Some implications for more physical models are discussed. In the second part, the gauge gravity action is written using a particularly simple matrix technique. The coupling to scalar, fermion and Yang-Mills fields is reviewed, with some small additions. A sum over historie…
A homogeneous part of the Seiberg-Witten gauge equivalence relation for gauge fields can lead to solutions that involve matter fields in such a way that the gauge equivalence and the dimensional and index structures are preserved. In particular, we consider scalar fields coupled to U(1) gauge fields. The matter fields appear non-linearly in the map. As an application, we analyze the implication of this ambiguity to emergent gravity at the first order in noncommutative parameter and show that the new ambiguity restores the possibility of conformal coupling of real scalar density field that is c…
