The filament was first The combination of line and continuum observations can provide vital insights to the formation and fragmentation of filaments and the initial conditions for star formation. We have carried out line observations to map the kinematics of an evolved, actively star forming filament G82.65-2.00. The filament was first identified from the Planck data as a region of particularly cold dust emission and was mapped at 100-500 $μ$m as a part of Herschel key program Galactic Cold Cores.
The observations reveal several velocity components in the field, with strongest line emission concentrated to velocity range $\sim [3,5]$ km $\rm s^{-1}$. The column density of molecular hydrogen along the filament varies from 1.0 to 2.3 $\times 10^{22}$ $\rm cm^{2}$. We have examined six cold clumps from the central part of the filament. The clumps have masses in the range $10 - 20$ $M_{\odot}$ ($\sim70M_{\odot}$ in total) and are close to or above the virial mass. Furthermore, the main filament is heavily fragmented and most of the the substructures have a mass lower than or close to the virial mass, suggesting that the filament is dispersing as a whole. Position-velocity maps of $\rm ^{12}CO$ and $\rm ^{13}CO$ lines indicate that at least one of the striations is kinematically connected to two of the clumps, potentially indicating mass accretion from the striation onto the main filament. We tentatively estimate the accretion rate to be $\dot{M}$ = $2.23 \times 10^{-6}$ $ M_{\odot} / \rm year$.
Massive stellar clusters provide radiation ($\mathrm{\sim 10^7-10^8~L_{\odot}}$) and winds ($\mathrm{\sim 1000~km/s}$) that act to heat dust and shape their surrounding environment. In this paper, the Arched Filaments in the Galactic center were studied to better understand the influence of the Arches cluster on its nearby interstellar medium (ISM). The Arched Filaments were observed with the Faint Object InfraRed CAMera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST) at 19.7, 25.2, 31.5, and 37.1 $μ$m. Color-temperature maps of the region created with the 25.2 and 37.1 $μ$m data reveal relatively uniform d…

Narrow-band HST imaging has resolved the detailed internal structure of the 10 kpc diameter H alpha+[NII] emission line nebulosity in NGC4696, the central galaxy in the nearby Centaurus cluster, showing that the dusty, molecular, filaments have a width of about 60pc. Optical morphology and velocity measurements indicate that the filaments are dragged out by the bubbling action of the radio source as part of the AGN feedback cycle. Using the drag force we find that the magnetic field in the filaments is in approximate pressure equipartition with the hot gas. The filamentary nature of the cold g…
Filaments are an important part of star-forming interstellar clouds. Theie properties hold clues to their formation mechanisms and role in the star-formation process. We compare the properties of filaments in the Orion Molecular Cloud 3 (OMC-3), as seen in mid-infrared (MIR) absorption and far-infrared (FIR) dust emission. We calculated optical depth maps of the OMC-3 filaments based on the MIR absorption seen in Spitzer data and FIR dust emission observed with Herschel and the ArTéMiS instrument. The widths of the selected OMC-3 filament segments are in the range 0.03-0.1 pc, with similar ave…
We have analysed the Herschel and SCUBA-2 dust continuum observations of the main filament in the Taurus L1495 star forming region, using the Bayesian fitting procedure PPMAP. (i) If we construct an average profile along the whole length of the filament, it has fwhm $\simeq 0.087\pm 0.003\,{\rm pc};\;$, but the closeness to previous estimates is coincidental. (ii) If we analyse small local sections of the filament, the column-density profile approximates well to the form predicted for hydrostatic equilibrium of an isothermal cylinder. (iii) The ability of PPMAP to distinguish dust emitting at …
We observed the L1506 filament, which is located in the Taurus molecular complex, with the Herschel PACS and SPIRE instruments. Our aim is to prove the variation in grain properties along the entire length of the filament. In particular, we want to determine above which gas density this variation arises and what changes in the grain optical properties/size distribution are required. We use the 3D radiative transfer code CRT, coupled to the dust emission and extinction code DustEM, to model the emission and extinction of the dense filament. We test a range of optical properties and size distrib…
Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) images of M100 show numerous long filaments with regularly-spaced clumps, suggesting the associated cloud complexes formed by large-scale gravitational instabilities in shocked and accumulated gas. Optical images give no hint of this underlying regularity. The typical spacing between near infrared (NIR) clumps is ~410 pc, which is ~3 times the clump diameter, consistent with the fastest growing mode in a filament of critical line density. The IRAC magnitudes and colors of several hundred clumps are measured in the most obvious 27 filaments a…
We report on high-sensitivity and high-angular resolution archival Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the large ($\sim$15000 AU) putative circumstellar disk associated with the O-type protostar NGC 7538 S. Observations of the continuum resolve this putative circumstellar disk into five compact sources, with sizes $\sim$ 3000 AU and masses $\sim10 M_\odot$. This confirm the results of recent millimeter observations made with CARMA/BIMA towards this object. However, we find that from most of these compact sources eject collimated bipolar outflows, revealed by our silicon monoxide (SiO {\i…
We present a new 3.3 mm continuum map of the OMC-2/3 region. When paired with previously published maps of 1.2mm continuum and NH3-derived temperature, we derive the emissivity spectral index of dust emission in this region, tracking its changes across the filament and cores. We find that the median value of the emissivity spectral index is 0.9, much shallower than previous estimates in other nearby molecular clouds. We find no significant difference between the emissivity spectral index of dust in the OMC-2/3 filament and the starless or protostellar cores. Furthermore, the temperature and em…
Recent \herschel\ and \planck\ observations of submillimeter dust emission revealed the omnipresence of filamentary structures in the interstellar medium (ISM). The ubiquity of filaments in quiescent clouds as well as in star-forming regions indicates that the formation of filamentary structures is a natural product of the physics at play in the magnatized turbulent cold ISM. An analysis of more than 270 filaments observed with {\it Herschel} in 8 regions of the Gould Belt, shows that interstellar filaments are characterized by a narrow distribution of central width, while they span a wide col…
In recent years, there were studies on the omnipresence and structures of filaments in star-forming regions, and the role of their fragmentation in the process of star formation. However, only a few studies analysed the evolution of filaments and their distribution with the Galactic disk where filaments form self-consistently as part of large-scale molecular cloud evolution. In this thesis, I perform dust radiative transfer calculations to study the effect of inclination on dust observations of filaments to evaluate whether the variations enable the identification of more filaments within dust…
The path to understanding star formation processes begins with the study of the formation of molecular clouds. The outskirts of these clouds are characterized by low column densities that allow the penetration of ultraviolet radiation, resulting in a non-negligible ionization fraction and the charging of the small dust grains that are mixed with the gas; this diffuse phase is then coupled to the ambient magnetic field. Despite the general assumption that dust and gas are tightly correlated, several observational and theoretical studies have reported variations in the dust-to-gas ratio toward d…
G351.776-0.527 is among the most massive, closest, and youngest filaments in the inner Galactic plane and therefore it is an ideal laboratory to study the kinematics of dense gas and mass replenishment on a large scale. In this paper, we present far-infrared (FIR) and submillimetre wavelength continuum observations combined with spectroscopic C$^{18}$O (2-1) data of the entire region to study its temperature, mass distribution, and kinematics. The structure is composed of a main elongated region with an aspect ratio of $\sim 23$, which is associated with a network of filamentary structures. Th…
PHANGS-JWST mid-infrared (MIR) imaging of nearby spiral galaxies has revealed ubiquitous filaments of dust emission in intricate detail. We present a pilot study to systematically map the dust filament network (DFN) at multiple scales between 25-400 pc in NGC 628. MIRI images at 7.7, 10, 11.3 and 21$μ$m of NGC 628 are used to generate maps of the filaments in emission, while PHANGS-HST B-band imaging yields maps of dust attenuation features. We quantify the correspondence between filaments traced by MIR thermal continuum / polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission and filaments detected v…
Context: In the last years, there have been many studies on the omnipresence and structures of filaments in star-forming regions, as well as their role in the process of star formation. Those filaments are normally identified as elongated fibres across the plane of the sky. But how would we detect filaments that are inclined? Aims: We aim to learn more about whether, and how, total column density or dust temperature change with respect to the line of sight. Such variations would enable observers to use dust observations to identify and study filaments at any inclination and gain more insight o…
We present CO J=4-3 line and 3 mm dust continuum observations of a 100 kpc-scale filamentary Lyα nebula (SSA22 LAB18) at z=3.1 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We detected the CO J=4-3 line at a systemic z(CO)=3.093 {\pm} 0.001 at 11 σ from one of the ALMA continuum sources associated with the Lyα filament. We estimated the CO J=4-3 luminosity of L'CO(4-3)=(2.3\pm0.2)x10^9 K km s^{-1} pc^2 for this CO source, which is one order of magnitude smaller than those of typical z>1 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) of similar far-infrared luminosity L(IR)~10^{12} Lsun. …
We study a northern part of the Corona Australis molecular cloud that consists of a filament and a dense sub-millimetre core inside the filament. Our aim is to measure dust temperature and sub-mm emissivity within the region. We also look for confirmation that near-infrared (NIR) surface brightness can be used to study the structure of even very dense clouds. We extend our previous NIR mapping south of the filament. The dust colour temperatures are estimated using Spitzer 160um and APEX/Laboca 870um maps. The column densities derived based on the reddening of background stars, NIR surface brig…
We use the POLARIS radiative transport code to generate predictions of the two main observables directly sensitive to the magnetic field morphology and strength in filaments: dust polarization and gas Zeeman line splitting. We simulate generic gas filaments with power-law density profiles assuming two density-field strength dependencies, six different filament inclinations, and nine distinct magnetic field morphologies, including helical, toroidal, and warped magnetic field geometries. We present idealized spatially resolved dust polarization and Zeeman-derived field strengths and directions m…
A parsec-scale dusty torus is thought to be the cause of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) dichotomy in the 1/2 types, narrow/broad emission lines. In a previous work, on the basis of parsec-scale resolution infrared / optical dust maps it was found that dust filaments, few parsecs wide, several hundred parsecs long, were ubiquitous features crossing the centre of type 2 AGN, their optical thickness being sufficient to fully obscure the optical nucleus. This work presents the complementary view for type 1 and intermediate-type AGN. The same type of narrow, collimated, dust filaments are equally fou…
We present a study of the dust properties of 12 classical and superbubble HII regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We use infrared photometry from Spitzer (8, 24, 70, and 160 \mum bands), obtained as part of the Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) program, along with archival spectroscopic classifications of the ionizing stars to examine the role of stellar sources on dust heating and processing. Our infrared observations show surprisingly little correlation between the emission properties of the dust and the effective temperatures or bolometric magnitudes of stars in the HII…
Recent observations from the MUSTANG2 instrument on the Green Bank Telescope have revealed evidence of enhanced long-wavelength emission in the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) in the Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC) 2/3 filament on 25" (0.1 pc) scales. Here we present a measurement of the SED on larger spatial scales (map size 0.5-3 degrees or 3-20 pc), at somewhat lower resolution (120", corresponding to 0.25 pc at 400 pc) using data from the Herschel satellite and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). We then extend the 120"-scale investigation to other regions covered in the Herschel Gould …
Recent dust continuum surveys have shown that filamentary structures are ubiquitous along the Galactic plane. While the study of their global properties has gained momentum recently, we are still far from fully understanding their origin and stability. Theories invoking magnetic field have been formulated to help explain the stability of filaments; however, observations are needed to test their predictions. In this paper, we investigate the structure and radial equilibrium of five filamentary molecular clouds with the aim of determining the role that magnetic field may play. To do this, we use…
B-fields And dust in interstelLar fiLAments using Dust POLarization (BALLAD-POL): IV. Grain alignment mechanisms in Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) using polarization observations from JCMT/POL-2
Herschel observations of interstellar clouds support a paradigm for star formation in which filaments play a central role. One of the foundations of this paradigm is the finding, based on studies of the radial column density profiles, that nearby filaments share a common inner width of ~0.1 pc. The existence of a characteristic filament width has been questioned, however, as it seems inconsistent with the scale-free nature of the power spectrum of cloud images. In an effort to clarify the origin of this apparent discrepancy, we examined the power spectra of the Herschel 250 micron images of th…
We used a data set from AKARI and Herschel images at wavelengths from 7 $μ$m to 500 $μ$m to catch the evidence of dust processing in galactic winds in NGC 1569. Images show a diffuse infrared (IR) emission extending from the galactic disk into the halo region. The most prominent filamentary structure seen in the diffuse IR emission is spatially in good agreement with the western H$α$ filament (western arm). The spatial distribution of the $F_\mathrm{350}/F_\mathrm{500}$ map shows high values in regions around the super-star clusters (SSCs) and towards the western arm, which are not found in th…
B-fields And dust in interstelLar fiLAments using Dust POLarization (BALLAD-POL): III. Grain alignment and disruption mechanisms in G34.43+0.24 using polarization observations from JCMT/POL-2
With recent Herschel observations, the northern filament of the Corona Australis cloud has now been mapped in a number of bands from 1.2um to 870um. The data set provides a good starting point for the study of the cloud over several orders of magnitude in density. We wish to examine the differences of the column density distributions derived from dust extinction, scattering, and emission, and to determine to what extent the observations are consistent with the standard dust models. From Herschel data, we calculate the column density distribution that is compared to the corresponding data deriv…
We use the PPMAP (Point Process MAPping) algorithm to re-analyse the \textit{Herschel} and SCUBA-2 observations of the L1688 and L1689 sub-regions of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. PPMAP delivers maps with high resolution (here $14''$, corresponding to $\sim 0.01\,{\rm pc}$ at $\sim 140\,{\rm pc}$), by using the observations at their native resolutions. PPMAP also delivers more accurate dust optical depths, by distinguishing dust of different types and at different temperatures. The filaments and prestellar cores almost all lie in regions with $N_{\rm H_2}\gtrsim 7\times 10^{21}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}…
We present a statistical study on the orientation of outflows with respect to large-scale filaments and the magnetic fields. Although filaments are widely observed toward Galactic star-forming regions, the exact role of filaments in star formation is unclear. Studies toward low-mass star-forming regions revealed both preferred and random orientation of outflows respective to the filament long-axes, while outflows in massive star-forming regions mostly oriented perpendicular to the host filaments, and parallel to the magnetic fields at similar physical scales. Here, we explore outflows in a sam…
We have analyzed a uniform sample of 16 evolved HII regions located in a 2 deg X 2 deg Galactic field centered at (l,b) = (30 deg, 0 deg) and observed as part of the Herschel Hi-GAL survey. The evolutionary stage of these HII regions was established using ancillary radio continuum data. By combining Hi-GAL PACS (70 micron, 160 micron) and SPIRE (250 micron, 350 micron and 500 micron) measurements with MIPSGAL 24 micron data, we built Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of the sources and showed that a 2-component grey-body model is a good representation of the data. In particular, wavelengths…
We present 230 GHz continuum polarization observations with the Atacama Large Milimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at a resolution of 0$\farcs1$ ($\sim 540$~au) in the high-mass star-forming regions W51 e2 and e8. These observations resolve a network of core-connecting dust lanes, marking a departure from earlier coarser more spherical continuum structures. At the same time, the cores do not appear to fragment further. Polarized dust emission is clearly detected. The inferred magnetic field orientations are prevailingly parallel to dust lanes. This key structural feature is analyzed together w…
In diffuse molecular clouds, possible precursors of star-forming clouds, the effect of the magnetic field is unclear. In this work we compare the orientations of filamentary structures in the Polaris Flare, as seen through dust emission by Herschel, to the plane-of-the-sky magnetic field orientation ($\rm B_{pos}$) as revealed by stellar optical polarimetry with RoboPol. Dust structures in this translucent cloud show a strong preference for alignment with $\rm B_{pos}$. 70 % of field orientations are consistent with those of the filaments (within 30$^\circ$). We explore the spatial variation o…
Magnetic fields in the massive star-forming region NGC 6334 and their relationship with the properties of dust filaments probed by [CII] and PAH emissions

We present the DustFilaments code, a full sky model for the millimeter Galactic emission of thermal dust. Our model, composed of millions of filaments that are imperfectly aligned with the magnetic field, is able to reproduce the main features of the dust angular power spectra at 353 GHz as measured by the Planck mission. Our model is made up of a population of filaments with sizes following a Pareto distribution $\propto L_a^{-2.445}$, with an axis ratio between short and long semi-axes $ε\sim 0.16$ and an angle of magnetic field misalignment with a dispersion RMS($θ_{LH}$)$=10$ degree. On la…
We have observed a sample of 35 long-period variables and four Cepheid variables in the vicinity of 23 Galactic globular clusters using the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The long-period variables in the sample cover a range of metallicities from near solar to about 1/40th solar. The dust mass-loss rate from the stars increases with pulsation period and bolometric luminosity. Higher mass-loss rates are associated with greater contributions from silicate grains. The dust mass-loss rate also depends on metallicity. The dependence is most clear when segregating the sample b…
NIKA2 observations of dust grain evolution from star-forming filament to T-Tauri disk: Preliminary results from NIKA2 observations of the Taurus B211/B213 filament
We study a group of evolved M-stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, characterized by a peculiar spectral energy distribution. While the $9.7~μ$m feature arises from silicate particles, the whole infrared data seem to suggest the presence of an additional featureless dust species. We propose that the circumstellar envelopes of these sources are characterized by a dual dust chemistry, with an internal region, harbouring carbonaceous particles, and an external zone, populated by silicate, iron and alumina dust grains. Based on the comparison with results from stellar modelling that describe the du…
We performed deep spectropolarimetric observations of a prototypical starburst galaxy M82 with the Subaru Telescope in order to study the kinematics of the dust outflow. We obtained optical polarized emission-line spectra up to $\sim$4~kpc away from the nucleus of the galaxy along three position angles within the conical outflowing wind (superwind). The H$α$ emission line in the superwind is strongly polarized and the polarization pattern shows dust scattering of central light sources, being consistent with the previous works. The intensity weighted polarization degree of the H$α$ line reaches…
We observationally investigate star formation (SF) process occurring in AFGL 5157 (area ~13.5 pc X 13.5 pc) using a multi-wavelength approach. Embedded filaments are seen in the {\it Herschel} column density map, and one of them is identified as an elongated filamentary feature (FF) (length ~8.3 pc; mass ~1170 Msun). Five Herschel clumps (Mclump ~45-300 Msun) are traced in the central part of FF, where an extended temperature structure (Td ~13.5-26.5 K) is observed. In the direction of the central part of FF, the warmer region at Td ~20-26.5 K spatially coincides with a mid-infrared (MIR) shel…

The dust reservoir in the interstellar medium of a galaxy is constantly being replenished by dust formed in the stellar winds of evolved stars. Due to their vicinity, nearby irregular dwarf galaxies the Magellanic Clouds provide an opportunity to obtain a global picture of the dust production in galaxies. The Small and Large Magellanic Clouds have been mapped with the Spitzer Space Telescope from 3.6 to 160 μm, and these wavelengths are especially suitable to study thermal dust emission. In addition, a large number of individual evolved stars have been targeted for 5-40 μm spectroscopy, reveal…
We present new ALMA Band 8 (rest-frame $90\,μ$m) observations of three massive ($M_\star \approx 10^{10}\,M_\odot$) galaxies at $z\approx7$ previously detected in [CII]$158\,μ$m and underlying dust continuum emission in the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS). We detect the dust continuum emission of two of our targets in Band 8 (REBELS-25 and REBELS-38), while REBELS-12 remains undetected. Through modified blackbody fitting we determine cold dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{dust} \approx 30 - 35\,$K) in both of the dual-band detected targets, given a fiducial model of optically…
We present a detailed study of the surface brightness profiles of dense filaments in IC 5146 using recent Herschel observations done with SPIRE. We describe the profile through an equilibrium solution of a self-gravitating isothermal cylinder pressure confined by its surrounding medium. In this first analysis we applied a simple modified black body function for the emissivity, neglecting any radiative transfer effects. Overall we found a good agreement of the observed surface brightness profiles with the model. The filaments indicate strong self-gravity with mass line densities M/l\gtrsim 0.5 …
We present deep CCS and HC$_7$N observations of the L1495-B218 filaments in the Taurus molecular cloud obtained using the K-band focal plane array on the 100m Green Bank Telescope. We observed the L1495-B218 filaments in CCS $J_N$ = 2$_1$$-$1$_0$ and HC$_7$N $J$ = 21$-$20 with a spectral resolution of 0.038 km s$^{-1}$ and an angular resolution of 31$''$. We observed strong CCS emission in both evolved and young regions and weak emission in two evolved regions. HC$_7$N emission is observed only in L1495A-N and L1521D. We find that CCS and HC$_7$N intensity peaks do not coincide with NH$_3$ or …
The dust emission spectrum and the brightness profile of passively heated condensed cores is analyzed in relation to their astrophysical environment. The cores are modeled as critically stable self-gravitating spheres embedded at the center of self-gravitating filaments that are assumed to be either spherical or cylindrical in shape. The filaments are heated by an isotropic interstellar radiation field (ISRF). The calculations are based on a physical dust model of stochastically heated grains of diffuse interstellar dust. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of the cores is calculated using …
We study the evolved stellar population of the Local Group galaxy IC10, with the aim of characterizing the individual sources observed and to derive global information on the galaxy, primarily the star formation history and the dust production rate. To this aim, we use evolutionary sequences of low- and intermediate-mass ($M < 8~M_{\odot}$) stars, evolved through the asymptotic giant branch phase, with the inclusion of the description of dust formation. We also use models of higher mass stars. From the analysis of the distribution of stars in the observational planes obtained with IR bands, we…
Silicon is present in interstellar dust grains, meteorites and asteroids, and to date thirteen silicon-bearing molecules have been detected in the gas-phase towards late-type stars or molecular clouds, including silane and silane derivatives. In this work, we have experimentally studied the interaction between atomic silicon and hydrogen under physical conditions mimicking those at the atmosphere of evolved stars. We have found that the chemistry of Si, H and H$_2$ efficiently produces silane (SiH$_4$), disilane (Si$_2$H$_6$) and amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H) grains. Silane has been …
Using observations from the {\em Herschel} Inventory of The Agents of Galaxy Evolution (HERITAGE) survey of the Magellanic Clouds, we have found thirty five evolved stars and stellar end products that are bright in the far-infrared. These twenty eight (LMC) and seven (SMC) sources were selected from the 529 evolved star candidates in the HERITAGE far-infrared point source catalogs. Our source identification method is based on spectral confirmation, spectral energy distribution characteristics, careful examination of the multiwavelength images and includes constraints on the luminosity, resulti…
