This thesis focuses on the XY model, the simplest vector spin model, used for describing numerous physical systems. It is studied for different sources of quenched disorder: random couplings, random fields, or both them. The belief propagation algorithm and the cavity method are exploited to solve the model on the sparse topology provided by Bethe lattices. It is found that the discretized version of the XY model, the so-called $Q$-state clock model, provides a reliable and efficient proxy for the continuous model with an error going to zero exponentially in $Q$, so implying a remarkable speedup in numerical simulations. Interesting results regard the low-temperature solution of the spin glass XY model, which is by far more unstable toward the replica symmetry broken phase with respect to what happens in discrete models. Moreover, even the random field XY model with ferromagnetic couplings exhibits a replica symmetry broken phase, at variance with both the fully connected version of the same model and the diluted random field Ising model, as a further evidence of a more pronounced glassiness of the diluted XY model. Then, the instabilities of the spin glass XY model in an external field are characterized, recognizing different critical lines according to the different symmetries of the external field. Finally, the inherent structures in the energy landscape of the spin glass XY model in a random field are described, exploiting the capability of the zero-temperature belief propagation algorithm to actually reach the ground state of the system. Remarkably, the density of soft modes in the Hessian matrix shows a non-mean-field behaviour, typical of glasses in finite dimension, while the critical point of replica symmetry instability predicted by the belief propagation algorithm seems to correspond to a delocalization of such soft modes.
The asymptotic probability distribution for a Brownian particle wandering in a 2D plane with random traps to enclose the algebraic area A by time t is calculated using the instanton technique.
Methods for understanding classical disordered spin systems with interactions conforming to some idealized graphical structure are well developed. The equilibrium properties of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, which has a densely connected structure, have become well understood. Many features generalize to sparse Erdos-Renyi graph structures above the percolation threshold, and to Bethe lattices when appropriate boundary conditions apply. In this paper we consider spin states subject to a combination of sparse strong interactions with weak dense interactions, which we term a composite model.…
In recent years, generative artificial neural networks based on restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs) have been successfully employed as accurate and flexible variational wave functions for clean quantum many-body systems. In this article we explore their use in simulations of disordered quantum spin models. The standard dense RBM with all-to-all inter-layer connectivity is not particularly appropriate for large disordered systems, since in such systems one cannot exploit translational invariance to reduce the amount of parameters to be optimized. To circumvent this problem, we implement sparse…
We compute the distribution of the number of negative eigenvalues (the index) for an ensemble of Gaussian random matrices, by means of the replica method. This calculation has important applications in the context of statistical mechanics of disordered systems, where the second derivative of the potential energy (the Hessian) is a random matrix whose negative eigenvalues measure the degree of instability of the energy surface. An analysis of the probability distribution of the Hessian index is therefore relevant for a geometric characterization of the energy landscape in disordered systems. Th…
An analytic effective medium theory is constructed to study the mean access times for random walks on hybrid disordered structures formed by embedding complex networks into regular lattices, considering transition rates $F$ that are different for steps across lattice bonds from the rates $f$ across network shortcuts. The theory is developed for structures with arbitrary shortcut distributions and applied to a class of partially-disordered traversal enhanced networks in which shortcuts of fixed length are distributed randomly with finite probability. Numerical simulations are found to be in exc…
We study the dynamics of macroscopic observables such as the magnetization and the energy per degree of freedom in Ising spin models on random graphs of finite connectivity, with random bonds and/or heterogeneous degree distributions. To do so we generalize existing implementations of dynamical replica theory and cavity field techniques to systems with strongly disordered and locally tree-like interactions. We illustrate our results via application to the dynamics of e.g. $\pm J$ spin-glasses on random graphs and of the overlap in finite connectivity Sourlas codes. All results are tested again…
Using the simple procedure, recently introduced, of dividing Gaussian matrices by a positive random variable, a family of random matrices is generated characterized by a behavior ruled by the generalized hyperbolic distribution. The spectral density evolves from the semi-circle law to a Gaussian-like behavior while concomitantly the local fluctuations show a transition from the Wigner-Dyson to the Poisson statistics. Long range statistics such as number variance exhibit large fluctuations typical of non-ergodic ensembles.
We study diffusion-limited pair annihilation $A+A\to 0$ on one-dimensional lattices with inhomogeneous nearest neighbour hopping in the limit of infinite reaction rate. We obtain a simple exact expression for the particle concentration $ρ_k(t)$ of the many-particle system in terms of the conditional probabilities $P(m;t|l;0)$ for a single random walker in a dual medium. For some disordered systems with an initially randomly filled lattice this leads asymptotically to $\bar{ρ(t)}=\bar{P(0;2t|0;0)}$ for the disorder-averaged particle density. We also obtain interesting exact relations for single…
The systematic approach for the off-perturbative calculations in disordered systems is developed. The proposed scheme is applied for the random temperature and the random field ferromagnetic Ising models. It is shown that away from the critical point, in the paramagnetic phase of the random temperature model, and in the ferromagnetic phase of the random field one, the free energy contains non-analytic contributions which have the form of essential singularities. It is demonstrated that these contributions appear due to localized in space instanton-like excitations.
We review some applications of central limit theorems and extreme values statistics in the context of disordered systems. We discuss several problems, in particular concerning Random Matrix Theory and the generalisation of the Tracy-Widom distribution when the disorder has ``fat tails''. We underline the relevance of power-law tails for Directed Polymers and mean-field Spin Glasses, and we point out various open problems and conjectures on these matters. We find that in many instances the assumption of Gaussian disorder cannot be taken for granted.
The parallel-tempering method has been applied to numerically study the thermodynamic behavior of a three-dimensional disordered antiferromagnetic Ising model with random fields at spin concentrations corresponding to regions of both weak and strong structural disorder. An analysis of the low-temperature behavior of the model convincingly shows that in the case of a weakly disordered samples there is realized an antiferromagnetic ordered state, while in the region of strong structural disorder the effects of random magnetic fields lead to the realization of a new phase state of the system with…
Using exact expressions for the persistence probability and for the leading eigenvalue of the Focker-Planck operator of a random walk in a random environment we establish a fundamental relation between the statistical properties of anomalous diffusion and the critical and off-critical behavior of random quantum spin chains. Many new exact results are obtained from this correspondence including the space and time correlations of surviving random walks and the distribution of the gaps of the corresponding Focker-Planck operator. In turn we derive analytically the dynamical exponent of the random…
The Anderson transition in three dimensions in a randomly varying magnetic flux is investigated in detail by means of the transfer matrix method with high accuracy. Both, systems with and without an additional random scalar potential are considered. We find a critical exponent of $ν=1.45\pm0.09$ with random scalar potential. Without it, $ν$ is smaller but increases with the system size and extrapolates within the error bars to a value close to the above. The present results support the conventional classification of universality classes due to symmetry.
Using a stochastic quantum approach, we study thermoelectric transport phenomena at low temperatures in disordered electrical systems connected to external baths. We discuss three different models of one-dimensional disordered electrons, namely the Anderson model of random on-site energies, the random-dimer model and the random-hopping model - also relevant for random-spin models. We find that although the asymptotic behavior of transport in open systems is closely related to that in closed systems for these noninteracting models, the magnitude of thermoelectric transport strongly depends on t…
We numerically investigate statistical ensembles for the occupations of eigenstates of an isolated quantum system emerging as a result of quantum quenches. The systems investigated are sparse random matrix Hamiltonians and disordered lattices. In the former case, the quench consists of sudden switching-on the off-diagonal elements of the Hamiltonian. In the latter case, it is sudden switching-on of the hopping between adjacent lattice sites. The quench-induced ensembles are compared with the so-called "quantum micro-canonical" (QMC) ensemble describing quantum superpositions with fixed energy …
For the system with the n-component order parameter (O(n)-model), conditions for initiation of the Imry-Ma disordered state resulting from the influence of defects of the "random local anisotropy" type were discovered. The initiation of such a state was shown to be possible if the distribution of local anisotropy axes directions in the order parameter space is nearly isotropic, and the limiting degree of the distribution anisotropy was found. For a higher anisotropy in the distribution of local axes directions, the long-range order in the system holds true even in the presence of defects of th…
The propagation of light through a disordered layered system is studied. It is shown that distribution function of the transmission coefficient phase tends to stationary non-uniform distribution as the number of layers increases. The exponential convergence to the stationary distribution allows unambiguous definition of the phase randomization length scale.
We study the finite size corrections to the free energy density in disorder spin systems on sparse random graphs, using both replica theory and cavity method. We derive an analytical expressions for the $O(1/N)$ corrections in the replica symmetric phase as a linear combination of the free energies of open and closed chains. We perform a numerical check of the formulae on the Random Field Ising Model at zero temperature, by computing finite size corrections to the ground state energy density.
The current status of experiments on the d=2 and d=3 random-exchange and random-field Ising models, as realized in dilute anisotropic antiferromagnets, is discussed. Two areas of current investigation are emphasized. For d=3, the large random field limit is being investigated and equilibrium critical behavior is being characterized at high magnetic concentrations.
Random walks are studied on disordered cellular networks in 2-and 3-dimensional spaces with arbitrary curvature. The coefficients of the evolution equation are calculated in term of the structural properties of the cellular system. The effects of disorder and space-curvature on the diffusion phenomena are investigated. In disordered systems the mean square displacement displays an enhancement at short time and a lowering at long ones, with respect to the ordered case. The asymptotic expression for the diffusion equation on hyperbolic cellular systems relates random walk on curved lattices to h…
We report exact multielectronic ground-states dependent on electron concentration for quantum mechanical two-dimensional disordered two-band type many body models in the presence of disordered hoppings and disordered repulsive finite Hubbard interactions, in fixed lattice topology considered provided by Bravais lattices. The obtained ground-states loose their eigenfunction character for independent electron approximation, perturbatively are not connected to the non-interacting but disordered case, and describe a localization-delocalization transition driven by the electron concentration, being…
We study the time delay of reflected and transmitted waves in 1D disordered media with high transmission. Highly transparent and translucent random media are found in nature or can be synthetically produced. We perform numerical simulations of microwaves propagating in disordered waveguides to show that reflection amplitudes are described by complex Gaussian random variables with the remarkable consequence that the time-delay statistics in reflection of 1D disordered media are described as in random media in the diffusive regime. For transmitted waves, we show numerically that the time delay i…
The $XY$ model with four-body quenched disordered interactions and its discrete $p$-clock proxy is studied on bipartite random graphs by means of the cavity method. The phase diagrams are determined from the ordered case to the spin-glass case. Dynamic, spinodal and thermodynamic transition lines are identified by analyzing free energy, complexity and tree reconstruction functions as temperature and disorder are changed. The study of the convergence of the $p$-clock model to the $XY$ model is performed down to temperature low enough to determine all relevant transition points for different con…
We show that the dynamics of simple disordered models, like the directed Trap Model and the Random Energy Model, takes place at a coexistence point between active and inactive dynamical phases. We relate the presence of a dynamic phase transition in these models to the extreme value statistics of the associated random energy landscape.
We derive the analytical expression for the first finite size correction to the average free energy of disordered Ising models on random regular graphs. The formula can be physically interpreted as a weighted sum over all non self-intersecting loops in the graph, the weight being the free-energy shift due to the addition of the loop to an infinite tree.
In the present work the problem of coupled disordered quantum wells is addressed in a random matrix theory framework. The quantum wells are short repulsive binary alloys embeded by ordered barriers and show well defined quantized levels as a consequence of spatial confinement. Finite disordered superlattices may show both diffusive-like and localized minibands. Three different level repulsion suppression mechanisms are discussed by analysing the evolution of nearest-level-spacing distribution function within each superlattice miniband. The present numerical results show a motional narrowing ef…
The Anderson transitions in a random magnetic field in three dimensions are investigated numerically. The critical behavior near the transition point is analyzed in detail by means of the transfer matrix method with high accuracy for systems both with and without an additional random scalar potential. We find the critical exponent $ν$ for the localization length to be $1.45 \pm 0.09$ with a strong random scalar potential. Without it, the exponent is smaller but increases with the system sizes and extrapolates to the above value within the error bars. These results support the conventional clas…

In this thesis I discuss analytical approaches to disordered systems using field theory. Disordered systems are characterized by a random energy landscape due to heterogeneities, which remains fixed on the time scales of the phenomena considered. I focus specifically on elastic interfaces in random media, such as pinned domain walls in ferromagnets containing defects, fluid contact lines on rough surfaces, etc. The goal is to understand static properties (e.g. the roughness) of such systems, and their dynamics in response to an external force. The interface moves in avalanches, triggered at ra…
The inference of Markov models from data on stochastic dynamical trajectories over the large time-window $T$ is revisited via the Large Deviations at Level 2.5 for the time-empirical density and the time-empirical flows. The goal is to obtain the large deviations properties for the probability distribution of the inferred Markov parameters in order to characterize their possible fluctuations around the true Markov parameters for large $T$. The explicit rate functions are given for several settings, namely discrete-time Markov chains, continuous-time Markov jump processes, and diffusion process…
We address the effect of disorder geometry on the critical force in disordered elastic systems. We focus on the model system of a long-range elastic line driven in a random landscape. In the collective pinning regime, we compute the critical force perturbatively. Not only our expression for the critical force confirms previous results on its scaling with respect to the microscopic disorder parameters, it also provides its precise dependence on the disorder geometry (represented by the disorder two-point correlation function). Our results are successfully compared to the results of numerical si…
Mechanical instability takes different forms in various ordered and disordered systems. We study the effect of thermal fluctuations in two disordered central-force lattice models near mechanical instability: randomly diluted triangular lattice and randomly braced square lattice. These two lattices exhibit different scalings for the emergence of rigidity at $T=0$ due to their different patterns of self stress at the transition. Using analytic theory we show that thermal fluctuations stabilize both lattices. In particular, the triangular lattice displays a critical regime in which the shear modu…
We study the statistical and dynamic properties of the systems characterized by an ultrametric space of states and translationary non-invariant symmetric transition matrices of the Parisi type subjected to "locally constant" randomization. Using the explicit expression for eigenvalues of such matrices, we compute the spectral density for the Gaussian distribution of matrix elements. We also compute the averaged "survival probability" (SP) having sense of the probability to find a system in the initial state by time $t$. Using the similarity between the averaged SP for locally constant randomiz…
Motivated by the compound ${\rm LiHo}_x{\rm Y}_{1-x}{\rm F}_4$, we consider the Ising chain with random couplings and in the presence of simultaneous random transverse and longitudinal fields, and study its low-energy properties at zero temperature by the strong disorder renormalization group approach. In the absence of longitudinal fields, the system exhibits a quantum-ordered and a quantum-disordered phase separated by a critical point of infinite disorder. When the longitudinal random field is switched on, the ordered phase vanishes and the trajectories of the renormalization group are attr…
Using the properties of random Möbius transformations, we investigate the statistical properties of the reflection coefficient in a random chain of lossy scatterers. We explicitly determine the support of the distribution and the condition for coherent perfect absorption to be possible. We show that at its boundaries the distribution has Lifshits-like tails, which we evaluate. We also obtain the extent of penetration of incoming waves into the medium via the Lyapunov exponent. Our results agree well when compared to numerical simulations in a specific random system.
In this Letter we study numerically the Anderson model on partially disordered random regular graphs (RRG) considered as the toy model for a Hilbert space of interacting disordered many-body system. The protected subsector of zero-energy states in a many-body system corresponds to clean nodes in RRG ensemble. Using adjacent gap ratio statistics and IPR we find the sharp mobility edge in the spectrum of one-particle Anderson model above some critical density of clean nodes. Its position in the spectrum is almost independent on the disorder strength. The possible application of our result for th…
In a previous paper we found that in the random field Ising model at zero temperature in three dimensions the correlation length is not self-averaging near the critical point and that the violation of self-averaging is maximal. This is due to the formation of bound states in the underlying field theory. We present a similar study for the case of disordered Potts and Ising ferromagnets in two dimensions near the critical temperature. In the random Potts model the correlation length is not self-averaging near the critical temperature but the violation of self-averaging is weaker than in the rand…
We compute the distribution of the decay rates (also referred to as residues) of the eigenstates of a disordered slab from a numerical model. From the results of the numerical simulations, we are able to find simple analytical formulae that describe those results well. This is possible for samples both in the diffusive and in the localised regime. As example of a possible application, we investigate the lasing threshold of random lasers.
The mechanism of appearance of exponentially large number of metastable states in magnetic phases of disordered Ising magnets with short-range random exchange is suggested. It is based on the assumption that transitions into inhomogeneous magnetic phases results from the condensation of macroscopically large number of sparse delocalized modes near the localization threshold. The properties of metastable states in random magnets with zero ground state magnetization (dilute antiferromagnet, binary spin glass, dilute ferromagnet with dipole interaction) has been obtained in framework of this mech…
We introduce the notion of transmission time to study the dynamics of disordered quantum spin chains and prove results relating its behavior to many-body localization properties. We also study two versions of the so-called Local Integrals of Motion (LIOM) representation of spin chain Hamiltonians and their relation to dynamical many-body localization. We prove that uniform-in-time dynamical localization expressed by a zero-velocity Lieb-Robinson bound implies the existence of a LIOM representation of the dynamics as well as a weak converse of this statement. We also prove that for a class of s…
The statistical properties of the phases of several modes nonlinearly coupled in a random system are investigated by means of a Hamiltonian model with disordered couplings. The regime in which the modes have a stationary distribution of their energies and the phases are coupled is studied for arbitrary degrees of randomness and energy. The complexity versus temperature and strength of nonlinearity is calculated. A phase diagram is derived in terms of the stored energy and amount of disorder. Implications in random lasing, nonlinear wave propagation and finite temperature Bose-Einstein condensa…
We studied lasing modes in a disordered photonic crystal. The scaling of the lasing threshold with the system size depends on the strength of disorder. For sufficiently large size, the minimum of the lasing threshold occurs at some finite value of disorder strength. The highest random cavity quality factor was comparable to that of an intentionally introduced single defect. At the minimum, the lasing threshold showed a super-exponential decrease with the size of the system. We explain it through a migration of the lasing mode frequencies toward the photonic bandgap center, where the localizati…
In this work we study the transport properties of non-interacting overdamped particles, moving on tilted disordered potentials, subjected to Gaussian white noise. We give exact formulas for the drift and diffusion coefficients for the case of random potentials resulting from the interaction of a particle with a "random polymer". In our model the "random polymer" is made up, by means of some stochastic process, of monomers that can be taken from a finite or countable infinite set of possible monomer types. For the case of uncorrelated random polymers we found that the diffusion coefficient exhi…
Random impedance networks are widely used as a model to describe plasmon resonances in disordered metal-dielectric and other two-component nanocomposites. In the present work, the spectral properties of resonances in random networks are studied within the framework of the random matrix theory. We have shown that the appropriate ensemble of random matrices for the considered problem is the Jacobi ensemble (the MANOVA ensemble). The obtained analytical expressions for the density of states in such resonant networks show a good agreement with the results of numerical simulations in a wide range o…
We combine numerical diagonalization with a semi-analytical calculations to prove the existence of the intermediate non-ergodic but delocalized phase in the Anderson model on disordered hierarchical lattices. We suggest a new generalized population dynamics that is able to detect the violation of ergodicity of the delocalized states within the Abou-Chakra, Anderson and Thouless recursive scheme. This result is supplemented by statistics of random wave functions extracted from exact diagonalization of the Anderson model on ensemble of disordered Random Regular Graphs (RRG) of N sites with the c…
Disorder plays a critical role in signal transport, by controlling the correlation of systems. In wave physics, disordered potentials suppress wave transport due to their localized eigenstates from random-walk scattering. Although the variation of localization with tunable disorder has been intensively studied as a bridge between ordered and disordered media, the general trend of disorder-enhanced localization has remained unchanged, failing in envisaging the existence of delocalization in highly-disordered potentials. Here, we propose the concept of 'metadisorder': tunable random-walk systems…
Random fields disorder Ising ferromagnets by aligning single spins in the direction of the random field in three space dimensions, or by flipping large ferromagnetic domains at dimensions two and below. While the former requires random fields of typical magnitude similar to the interaction strength, the latter Imry-Ma mechanism only requires infinitesimal random fields. Recently, it has been shown that for dilute anisotropic dipolar systems a third mechanism exists, where the ferromagnetic phase is disordered by finite-size glassy domains at a random field of finite magnitude that is considera…
Topological insulators supporting non-abelian anyonic excitations are at the center of attention as candidates for topological quantum computation. In this paper, we analyze the ground-state properties of disordered non-abelian anyonic chains. The resemblance of fusion rules of non-abelian anyons and real space decimation strongly suggests that disordered chains of such anyons generically exhibit infinite-randomness phases. Concentrating on the disordered golden chain model with nearest-neighbor coupling, we show that Fibonacci anyons with the fusion rule $τ\otimesτ={\bf 1}\oplus τ$ exhibit tw…
We study the stochastic parallel dynamics of Ising spin systems defined on finitely connected directed random graphs with arbitrary degree distributions, using generating functional analysis. For fully asymmetric graphs the dynamics of the system can be completely solved, due to the asymptotic absence of loops. For arbitrary graph symmetry, we solve the dynamics exactly for the first few time steps, and we construct approximate stationary solutions.
After reviewing the basics of the cavity method in classical systems, we show how its quantum version, with some appropriate approximation scheme, can be used to study a system of spins with random ferromagnetic interactions and a random transverse field. The quantum cavity equations describing the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition can be transformed into the well-known problem of a classical directed polymer in a random medium. The glass transition of this polymer problem translates ino the existence of a `Griffith phase' close to the quantum phase transition of the quantum spin pro…
We review the random matrix theory describing elastic scattering through zero-dimensional ballistic cavities (having chaotic classical dynamics) and quasi-one dimensional disordered systems. In zero dimension, general symmetry considerations (flux conservation and time reversal symmetry) are only considered, while the combination law of scatterers put in series is taken into account in quasi-one dimension. Originally developed for calculating the distribution of the electrical conductance of mesoscopic systems, this theory naturally reveals the universal behaviors characterizing elastic scatte…
We consider the scattering of an electron from a semi-infinite one-dimensional random medium. The random medium is characterized by force, $-\d V/\d L$ being the basic random variable. We obtain an analytical expression for the stationary delay time ($τ$) distribution $P_s(τ)$ within a random phase approximation. Our result agrees with earlier analytical expressions, where the random potential is taken to be of different kind, indicating universality of the delay time distribution, i.e., delay time distribution is independent of the nature of disorder.
We present here for the first time a unifying perspective for the lack of equipartition in non-linear ordered systems and the low temperature phase-space fragmentation in disordered systems. We demonstrate that they are just two manifestation of the same underlying phenomenon: ergodicity breaking. Inspired by recent experiments, suggesting that lasing in optically active disordered media is related to an ergodicity-breaking transition, we studied numerically a statistical mechanics model for the nonlinearly coupled light modes in a disordered medium under external pumping. Their collective beh…
We introduce a new real space super cell approximation method for treating the electronic states of disordered systems. This method is general and allows both randomness in the on-site energies and in the hopping integrals. In the special case of randomness in the on-site energies only, this method is equivalent to the Non Local Coherent Potential Approximation (NLCPA) derived previously.
We study analytically the local density of states in a disordered normal-metal wire at ballistic distance to a superconductor. Our calculation is based on a scattering-matrix approach, which concerns for wave-function localisation in the normal metal, and extends beyond the conventional semiclassical theory based on Usadel and Eilenberger equations. We also analyse how a finite transparency of the NS interface modifies the spectral proximity effect and demonstrate that our results agree in the dirty diffusive limit with those obtained from the Usadel equation.
Disordered mechanical systems with high connectivity represent a limit opposite to the more familiar case of disordered crystals. Individual ions in a crystal are subjected essentially to nearest-neighbor interactions. In contrast, the systems studied in this paper have all their degrees of freedom coupled to each other. Thus, the problem of linearized small oscillations of such systems involves two full positive-definite and non-commuting matrices, as opposed to the sparse matrices associated with disordered crystals. Consequently, the familiar methods for determining the averaged vibrational…
A free massive scalar field in inhomogeneous random media is investigated. The coefficients of the Klein-Gordon equation are taken to be random functions of the spatial coordinates. The case of an annealed-like disordered medium, modeled by centered stationary and Gaussian processes, is analyzed. After performing the averages over the random functions, we obtain the two-point causal Green's function of the model up to one-loop. The disordered scalar quantum field theory becomes qualitatively similar to a $λϕ^{4}$ self-interacting theory with a frequency-dependent coupling.
This chapter addresses the question of quantum entanglement in disordered chains, focusing on the von-Neumann and Rényi entropies for three important classes of random systems: Anderson localized, infinite randomness criticality, and many-body localization (MBL). We review previous works, and also present new results for the entanglement entropy of random spin chains at low and high energy.
