We extract a variable $X$ from electron orbitals $Ψ_{n\bf{k}}$ and energies $E_{n\bf{k}}$ in the parent high-symmetry structure of a wide range of complex oxides: perovskites, rutiles, pyrochlores, and cristobalites. Even though calculation was done only in the parent structure, with no distortions, we show that $X$ dictates material's true ground state structure. We propose using Wannier functions to extract concealed variables such as $X$ both for material structure prediction and for high-throughput approaches.
Discoveries of topological states and topological materials reshape our understanding of physics and materials over the last 15 years. Phonon plays essential roles in dynamical behaviors and thermal properties, which are central topics in fundamental issues of materials science. The importance of first principles phonon calculations cannot be overly emphasized. Phonopy is an open source code for such calculations launched by the present authors, which has been world-widely used. Here we demonstrate phonon properties with fundamental equations and show examples how the phonon calculations are applied in materials science.
The successful exfoliation of graphene from graphite has brought significant attention to predicting new two-dimensional (2D) materials that can be realized experimentally. As a consequence, first-principles studies of novel 2D materials become a routine, with thousands of papers published every year. What makes these studies interesting is that they predict new materials which have not been realized yet but should be a panacea for topological insulators, next-generation battery materials, novel solar cell materials, etc. There is no doubt that some of the proposed materials can provide a spec…
In search of a reliable methodology for the prediction of light absorption and emission of Ce$^{3+}$-doped luminescent materials, 13 representative materials are studied with first-principles and semiempirical approaches. In the first-principles approach, that combines constrained density-functional theory and $Δ$SCF, the atomic positions are obtained for both ground and excited states of the Ce$^{3+}$ ion. The structural information is fed into Dorenbos' semiempirical model. Absorption and emission energies are calculated with both methods and compared with experiment. The first-principles ap…
We demonstrate, by means of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation on different members of the ZIF family, how topology, geometry, and linker functionalization drastically affect the water adsorption properties of these materials, tweaking the ZIF materials from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. We show that adequate functionalization of the linkers allows one to tune the host-guest interactions, even featuring dual amphiphilic materials whose pore space features both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions. Starting from an initially hydrophobic material (ZIF-8), various degrees of hydrophilicity could…
In this paper, we propose a first principle calculation method for the effective Zeeman's coupling based on the second perturbation theory and apply it to a few topological materials. For Bi and Bi$_2$Se$_3$, our numerical results are in good accord with the experimental data; for Na$_3$Bi, TaN, and ZrTe$_5$, the structure of the multi-bands Zeeman's couplings are discussed. Especially, we discuss the impact of Zeeman's coupling on the Fermi surface's topology in Na$_3$Bi in detail.
We present a simple and efficient approximation to the electron-phonon scattering rate suitable for high-throughput screening of candidate materials for thermoelectric devices, based on electronic transport. The method is applied to calculate the electronic transport coefficients of half-Heusler compounds, showing agreement with experimental data. By directly computing electrical and the electronic part of the thermal conductivities, we find deviations from the Wiedemann-Franz law in these compounds at high temperatures and low carrier concentrations.
We demonstrate a first-principles method to study magnetotransport in materials by solving the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) in the presence of an external magnetic field. Our approach employs ab initio electron-phonon interactions and takes spin-orbit coupling into account. We apply our method to various semiconductors (Si and GaAs) and two-dimensional (2D) materials (graphene) as representative case studies. The magnetoresistance, Hall mobility and Hall factor in Si and GaAs are in very good agreement with experiments. In graphene, our method predicts a large magnetoresistance, consiste…
Design principles and novel predictions of new 3D Dirac semimetals are presented, along with the context of currently known materials. Current materials include those based on a topological to trivial phase transition, such as in TlBiSe$_{2-x}$S$_x$ and Hg$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$Te, Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$, Bi$_{2-x}$In$_x$Se$_3$, and Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se. Some more recently revealed materials, Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$, are 3D Dirac semimetals in their native composition. The different design principles presented each yield novel predictions for new candidates. For Case I, 3D Dirac semimetals based on charge ba…
One of the most remarkable characteristics of topological materials is that they have special surface states, which are determined by the topological properties of their bulk materials. The angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful tool to explore the surface states, which allows to further investigate the topological phase transitions. However, it is very difficult to compare the first-principle calculated band structures to the ARPES results, when the systems are doped or alloyed, because the band structures are heavily folded. We develop an efficient band unfolding metho…
We present a comparative ab initio computational study of sodium and lithium storage in amorphous (glassy) carbon (a-C) vs. graphite. Amorphous structures are obtained by fitting stochastically generated structures to a reference radial distribution function. Li insertion is thermodynamically favored in both graphite and a-C. While sodium insertion is thermodynamically unfavored in graphite, a-C possesses multiple insertion sites with binding energies stronger than Na cohesive energy, making it usable as anode material for Na-ion batteries.
We present a comprehensive first-principles investigation of the electronic and optical properties of CsK2Sb, a semiconducting material for ultra-bright electron sources for particle accelerators. Our study, based on density-fuctional theory and many-body perturbation theory, provides all the ingredients to model the emission of this material as a photocathode, including band gap, band dispersion, and optical absorption. An accurate description of these properties beyond the mean-field picture is relevant to take into account many-body effects. We discuss our results in the context of state-of…
Semiconductors with very low lattice thermal conductivities are highly desired for applications relevant to thermal energy conversion and management, such as thermoelectrics and thermal barrier coatings. Although the crystal structure and chemical bonding are known to play vital roles in shaping heat transfer behavior, material design approaches of lowering lattice thermal conductivity using chemical bonding principles are uncommon. In this work, we present an effective strategy of weakening interatomic interactions and therefore suppressing lattice thermal conductivity based on chemical bondi…
Recent discovery of new materials for thermoelectric energy conversion is enabled by efficient prediction of materials' performance from first-principles, without empirically fitted parameters. The novel simplified approach for computing electronic transport properties is described, which achieves good accuracy and transferability while greatly reducing complexity and computation cost compared to the existing methods. The first-principles calculations of the electron-phonon coupling demonstrate that the energy dependence of the electron relaxation time varies significantly with chemical compos…
We investigate the Li2CuSb full-Heusler alloy using the first-principles electronic structure calculations and propose the electrochemical lithiation in this alloy. Band structure calculations suggest the presence of metallic nature in this alloy contrary to half-metallic nature as predicted for most of the members of the full-Heusler alloy family. This alloy is found to be a promising anode material for high-capacity rechargeable batteries based on lithium-ion. We found a removal voltage of 2.48 V for lithium ions in the Li2CuSb/Cu cell, which is in good agreement with the experimentally obta…

First principles methods can provide insight into materials that is otherwise impossible to acquire. Density Functional Theory (DFT) has been the first principles method of choice for numerous applications, but it falls short of predicting the properties of correlated materials. First principles Density Functional Theory + Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DFT+DMFT) is a powerful tool that can address these shortcomings of DFT when applied to correlated metals. In this brief review, which is aimed at non-experts, we review the basics and some applications of DFT+DMFT.
In this article, we report emergence of topological phase in XMR material TmSb under hydrostatic pressure using first principles calculations. We find that TmSb, a topologically trivial semimetal, undergoes a topological phase transition with band inversion at X point without breaking any symmetry under a hydrostatic pressure of 12 GPa. At 15 GPa, it again becomes topologically trivial with band inversion at $Γ$ as well as X point. We find that the pressures corresponding to the topological phase transitions are far below the pressure corresponding to structural phase transition at 25.5 GPa. T…
We use a combination of symmetry analysis and high-throughput density functional theory calculations to search for new ferroelectric materials. We use two search strategies to identify candidate materials. In the first strategy, we start with non-polar materials and look for unrecognized energy-lowering polar distortions. In the second strategy, we consider polar materials and look for related higher symmetry structures. In both cases, if we find new structures with the correct symmetries that are also close in energy to experimentally known structures, then the material is likely to be switch…
Motivated by the need to understand the role of internal interfaces in Li migration occurring in Li-ion batteries, a first principles study of a coincident site lattice grain boundary in LiFePO4 cathode material and in its delithiated counterpart FPO4 is performed. The structure of the investigated grain boundary is obtained and the corresponding interface energy is calculated. Other properties, such as ionic charges and magnetic moments, excess free volume and the lifetime of positrons trapped at the interfaces, are determined and discussed. The results show that while the grain boundary in L…
Doping lithium-ion battery electrode materials LiMO$_2$ (M = Co, Ni, Mn) with impurities has been shown to be an effective way to optimize their electrochemical properties. Here, we report a detailed first-principles study of layered oxides LiCoO$_2$, LiNiO$_2$, and LiMnO$_2$ lightly doped with transition-metal (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn) and non-transition-metal (Mg, Al) impurities using hybrid-density-functional defect calculations. We find that the lattice site preference is dependent on both the dopant's charge and spin states, which are coupled strongly to the local lattice environment and can be af…
Finding electrode materials with high capacity is a key challenge for developing Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Graphene was once expected to be a promising candidate, but it turns out to be too inert to interact with Li. Here, by using the first-principles calculations, we predict that Germanium doped graphene, termed as Germagraphene which has been achieved in recent experiment, is a promising LIB anode material. We find that at the optimal Ge concentration, which corresponds to the chemical formula C17Ge, the specific capacity for Germagraphene can be as high as 1734 mAh/g, over four times l…
The spin-orbit -induced spin splitting of energy bands in low symmetry compounds (the Rashba Effect) has a long-standing relevance to spintronic applications and to the fundamental understanding of symmetry breaking in solids, yet the knowledge of what controls its magnitude in different materials is difficult to anticipate. Indeed, rare discoveries of compounds with large Rashba coefficients are invariably greeted as pleasant surprises. We advance the understanding of the "Rashba Scale" using the "inverse design" approach by formulating theoretically the relevant design principle and then ide…
The microscopic physics behind the lattice thermal conductivity of NiTiSn is investigated using first-principles-based anharmonic lattice dynamics. The calcu lated lattice thermal conductivity of bulk materials (5.3 W/m.K) is in good agreement with the experimental value at the optimal working temper ature (700 K), but is overestimated below this temperature. The calculated values can be strongly affected by the size of the crystalline grains. We show tha t the lattice thermal conductivity is dominated by the acoustic (transverse and mostly longitudinal) modes with no contribution from the opt…
In this work we introduce the simplest, lowest-order Landau-like potential for BiFeO$_3$ and La-doped BiFeO$_3$ as an expansion around the paraelectric cubic phase in powers of polarization, FeO$_6$ octahedral rotations and strains. We present an analytical approach for computing the model parameters from density functional theory. We illustrate our approach by computing the potentials for BiFeO$_3$ and La$_{0.25}$Bi$_{0.75}$FeO$_3$ and show that, overall, we are able to capture the first-principles results accurately. The computed models allow us to identify and explain the main interactions …
Oxides have many potentially desirable characteristics for thermoelectric applications, including low cost and stability at high temperatures, but thus far there are few known high $zT$ $n$-type oxide thermoelectrics. In this work, we use high-throughput first principles calculations to screen transition metal oxides, nitrides, and sulfides for candidate materials with high power factors and low thermal conductivity. We find a variety of promising materials, and we investigate these materials in detail in order to understand the mechanisms that cause them to have high power factors. These mate…
Using density functional theory (DFT) methods, we have calculated X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra in bulk and thin films of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, CrI$_3$, and CrGeTe$_3$. DFT+$U$ methods are employed for better handling of correlation effects of 3$d$ electrons of transition metals. We discuss relations between the density of states, radial matrix elements, and the corresponding spectra. By comparing the calculated spectra with previously measured spectra, we discuss the reliability of DFT+$U$ methods to describe the electronic structures of these mater…
In this study, we perform a comparative theoretical study on the thermoelectric performance of materials with Cu$Ch_4$ ($Ch=$ S, Se) tetrahedra, including famous thermoelectric materials BiCuSeO and tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_4$S$_{13}$, by means of first-principles calculations. By comparing these electronic band structures, we find that many of these materials possess a Cu-$t_{2g}$ band structure consisting of quasi-one-dimensional band dispersions and the isotropic (two-dimensional for layered compounds) band dispersion near the valence-band edge. Therefore, the key factors for the thermoele…
We systematically evaluate the prospects of a novel 2D nanomaterial, phosphorene, as anode for Na-ion batteries. Using first-principles calculations, we determine the Na adsorption energy, specific capacity and Na diffusion barriers on monolayer phosphorene. We examine the main trends in electronic structure and mechanical properties as a function of Na concentration. We find favorable Na-phosphorene interaction with theoretical capacity, exceeding those of alternative monolayer anodes for Na-ion batteries. We find that Na-phosphorene undergoes semiconductor-metal transition at high Na concent…
Critical to the development of improved solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology are novel compounds with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity and robust stability under cathode operating conditions. Approximately 2145 distinct perovskite compositions are screened for potential use as high activity, stable SOFC cathodes, and it is verified that the screening methodology qualitatively reproduces the experimental activity, stability, and conduction properties of well-studied cathode materials. The calculated oxygen p-band center is used as a first principle-based descriptor of …
Electronic transport in narrow gap semiconductors is characterized by spontaneous vertical transitions between carriers in the valence and conduction bands, a phenomenon also known as Zener tunneling. However, this effect is not captured by existing models based on the Boltzmann transport equation. In this work, we propose a new fully first principles model for electronic transport using the Wigner distribution function and implement it to solve the equations of motion for electrons. The formalism generalizes the Boltzmann equation to materials with strong interband coupling and include transp…
Using the Spectroscopic Limited Maximum Efficiency, and Shockley and Queisser predictor models, we compute the solar efficiency of the chalcopyrites AgMX2(M=In,Al;X=S,Se,Te). The results presented are based on the estimation of the electronic and optical properties obtained from first principles density functional theory as well as the many-body perturbation theory calculations. The results from this report were consistent with the experimental data. The optical bandgap was accurately estimated from the absorption spectra, obtained by solving the Bethe and Salpeter equation. Fitting the Tauc's…
The effect of monolayers of oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H) on the possibility of material transfer at aluminium/titanium nitride (Al/TiN) and copper/diamond (Cu/C$_{\text{dia}}$) interfaces, respectively, were investigated within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). To this end the approach, contact, and subsequent separation of two atomically flat surfaces consisting of the aforementioned pairs of materials were simulated. These calculations were performed for the clean as well as oxygenated and hydrogenated Al and C$_{\text{dia}}$ surfaces, respectively. Various contact configurati…
Chevrel phase materials form a family of ternary molybdenum chalcogenides with a general chemical formula $A_x{\rm Mo}_6X_8$ ($A$ = metal elements, $X$ = chalcogen). The variety of $A$ atoms makes a large number of family members and leads to many tunable physical properties, such as the superconductivity, thermoelectricity and the ionic conductivity. In this work, we have further found various nontrivial band topological states in these materials by using first-principle calculations. The compounds having time-reversal symmetry, such as ${\rm BaMo}_6{\rm S}_8$, ${\rm SrMo}_6{\rm S}_8$, and ${…
First-principles techniques for electronic transport property prediction have seen rapid progress in recent years. However, it remains a challenge to model heterostructures incorporating variability due to fabrication processes. Machine-learning (ML)-based materials informatics approaches (MI) are increasingly used to accelerate design and discovery of new materials with targeted properties, and extend the applicability of first-principles techniques to larger systems. However, few studies exploited MI to learn electronic structure properties and use the knowledge to predict the respective tra…
The band structure, optical and defects properties of Ba_{2}TeO are systematically investigated using density functional theory with a view to understanding its potential as an optoelectronic or trans- parent conducting material. Ba_{2}TeO crystallizes with tetragonal structure (space group P4/nmm) and with a 2.93 eV optical band gap 1 . We find relatively modest band masses for both electrons and holes suggesting applications. Optical properties show a infrared-red absorption when doped. This could potentially be useful for combining wavelength filtering and transparent conducting functions. …
Scattering of carriers with ionized impurities governs charge transport in doped semiconductors. However, electron interactions with ionized impurities cannot be fully described with quantitative first-principles calculations, so their understanding relies primarily on simplified models. Here we show an ab initio approach to compute the interactions between electrons and ionized impurities or other charged defects. It includes the short- and long-range electron-defect (e-d) interactions on equal footing, and allows for efficient interpolation of the e-d matrix elements. We combine the e-d and …
Accurate first-principles predictions of the structural, electronic, magnetic, and electrochemical properties of cathode materials can be key in the design of novel efficient Li-ion batteries. Spinel-type cathode materials Li$_x$Mn$_2$O$_4$ and Li$_x$Mn$_{1.5}$Ni$_{0.5}$O$_4$ are promising candidates for Li-ion battery technologies, but they present serious challenges when it comes to their first-principles modeling. Here, we use density-functional theory with extended Hubbard functionals - DFT+$U$+$V$ with on-site $U$ and inter-site $V$ Hubbard interactions - to study the properties of these …
An analysis of thermal transients from non-equilibrium ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations can be used to calculate the thermal conductivity of materials with a short phonon mean-free path. We adapt the approach-to-equilibrium methodology to the three-dimensional case of a simulation that consists of a cubic core region at higher temperature approaching thermal equilibrium with a thermostatted boundary. This leads to estimates of the lattice thermal conductivity for the glassy state of the phase-change memory material, Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_5$, which are close to previously reported experimenta…

In this paper, we calculate the transport properties of various configurations of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MSe$_2$ (M = Hf, Zr, Ti) in search of promising thermoelectric materials at low/high temperatures. We explore the properties of the pure monolayer at discrete levels of biaxial tensile strain (epsilon = 0%, 2%, 4%, 8%), as well as those of the van der Waals heterobilayers MSe$_2$/MSe$_2$ using first-principles calculations combined with semi-classical Boltzmann trans…
Radiative cooling has recently revived due to its significant potential as an environmentally friendly cooling technology. However, the design of particle-matrix cooling nanocomposites was generally carried out via tedious trial-and-error approaches, and the atomistic physics for efficient radiative cooling was not well understood. In this work, we identify the atomistic metrics of Barium Sulfate (BaSO$_4$) nanocomposite, which is an ultra-efficient radiative cooling material, using a predictive first-principles approach coupled with Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that BaSO$_4$-acry…
The optical and electronic properties of crystalline Li2TeO3, which is a tellurite glass, is studied in the framework of density functional theory (DFT) implemented software SIESTA. The material has monoclinic symmetrized structure and the unit or primitive cell of the material, periodic in all directions has been taken to study the properties. The electronic structures show that it is a wide-gap semiconductor and the property changes to metallic when subjected to electric field. This tunable property can be used in various fields of electronics. The optical properties studied tells that Li2Te…
